Fog rolls out, cinematically, from between the rain-soaked trees as I slow my nondescript sedan to a stop at a cabin in the woods just outside Conception Ridge, Oregon.
If this were in a thriller movie, I’d be the plucky young FBI investigator closing in on my prey.
But I’m not in a thriller movie.
I’m a twenty-two-year-old girl with a general liberal arts degree and a year of sailboat crewing experience. The car is a decade old and on its last legs, but it was all I could afford.
And my only training in taking down a criminal is that I’ve listened to every single episode of my dad’s best friend’s true crime podcast.
Since he’s my prey, though, I think that makes me an expert in him.
This is his cabin I’m looking at. Raindrops dance upon the windshield, forming delicate patterns that distort the view. I speed up the wipers so I can see better. A warm yellow light glows from a window to the right of the door. Did he hear a car approaching? Will he look out that window?
But there’s no sign of Nolan Adler. I won’t have a chance to glean any additional information before I knock on his door and we’re looking at each other, face-to-face, for the first time in four years.
In my pocket is a letter he gave me when I turned eighteen, with a step-by-step guide on how to prove to him that we are meant to be together. Not that he meant it to be that. He meant it to be a gentle redirection for a girl with a misguided crush on a much older man.
And for almost two years, I believed him. I thought I could outgrow my fiery fantasies of what it might be like for us to be together. Hot, explosive, secretive.
Instead, those dreams have haunted me as I’ve tried to live a… what did he recommend? A deeply realized, fulsome adult life.
A phrase so filthy that if he ever said it on his podcast, his fans would spontaneously combust.

I ignore the letter burning a hole in my pocket. The letter that says I’m wrong, that he’s not mine, that—

Before I can chicken out, I shove the car door open. A light mist hangs in the air, with fatter raindrops slapping against my cheeks. Everything smells earthy and intense. Like danger and mystery.
You’ve listened to too many podcasts, Eden.
I have a small duffel bag on the backseat. I grab that, then take a hesitant step forward. My foot immediately lands in a wet puddle. Great. Sucking in a quick breath, I run to the porch before I can get any further into my own head, and I pound on the door.
For a moment, all I can hear is the pounding of my own pulse. My throat goes dry.
But then there are footsteps on the other side of the door, and the deadbolt is thrown. The handle turns, and—
“Eden?” His voice is an electric shock to my soul. And even though his gray eyes lock onto my face—oh, I’ve missed your attention—I only see surprise and confusion in the smoky depths. “What are you doing here?”
Rain drops that had collected in my hair during my dash now slide down my neck. Cold, wet, slithering reminders that I could have stayed in the Caribbean and just…not bothered. That was always an option, and I chose not to take it.
I shouldn't have just shown up like this, I think to myself, miserably. I should have called first. But if I called first, he could have declined to have me visit.
And now that I’m here on his doorstep, my gaze gobbling him up like I’ve been starved for too long, I know I wouldn’t have run that risk.
He looks the same as he did four years ago. No, he looks even better. The same square jaw, but newly covered in a few days of stubble. His hair is longer, with a few streaks of silver threading through the chestnut brown that’s verging on shaggy. He's fitter than ever, wearing a simple t-shirt and jeans, and I can see the muscles in his arms and shoulders as he crosses his arms over his chest.
The wind picks up, causing a chill to settle on my damp skin. I shift my weight, my duffle bag cradling in my arms as I feel the rain drips down my spine.
"Eden," he says softly, prompting me again. His voice is like velvet, and I can feel it wrap around me like a blanket, even if he doesn’t mean it that way.
"Surprise,” I manage to say weakly.
His brows pull tight and he nods harshly. “It is. Yeah.”
From behind him, I hear laughter.
There’s no other car in the driveway, but my powers of deductive reasoning didn’t go so far as to consider that he might live with someone now.
Wouldn’t I know that? Wouldn’t I have felt some disturbance in the force?

The perfect daddy snack.
This was a hot little story with a hefty helping of Daddy kink, only a tiny bit of little girl thrown in. Miss Eden was introduced to us in Stranded with his Dad where she mentions that she's struggling with a forbidden relationship. She loves someone who she shouldn't. That person is her dad's best friend. On her eighteenth birthday, a couple of years ago, Nolan rejected her. He wrote her a letter saying she should go out and live her life. So that's what Eden has done. There's that constant reminder that she still is in love with him. So, what does she do?
She shows up at his cabin, unannounced and late at night cause he wouldn't be able to turn her away, right? With the illusion that she's only staying the night cause she's in the middle of a trip, he lets her stay. Things go deeper when Eden brings up the letter Nolan wrote for her and how she still feels the same.
This novella literally takes place in one night. Everything falls erupts and gets placed back together within one night. The night where Nolan finally admits he does love her back.

Because as terribly wrong as I am for sweet, kind Eden Myers, she is one thousand percent my type. Not even my type. My singularly perfect fantasy woman. Sexually curious and naturally bratty, she makes my blood pump in a way nobody else ever has.

I went into this expecting "young woman seduces her dad's best friend" plus some light-to-general daddy kink, and while I got that, Chloe took it a step further by integrating a healthy dose of Daddy/Middle kink play... which (to this extent at least) was admittedly new to me. And while I'm not entirely convinced its my cup of tea, it still works? 🤭 (I feel dirty for even admitting that... *going to hell intensifies*)
I will say this though: even though the kink-level was unexpected and the fast-burn OTT, it was still entertaining - which, at the end of the day, is all I ask for in a book (especially the novella length kind). While Midnight Snack is probably my least favorite Chloe Maine book so far, that doesn't mean it's bad or without merit. If anything, it was a nice way to dip one's toes into the deeper part of the daddy kink waters without the full-blown commitment, if that makes sense.
But it's the connection and vulnerability between Eden and Nolan that I was here for more than anything else, and on that, Chloe delivered, as she always does.

This story was a bit different than most other "daddy/lg" short stories. While there wasn't much to it, the two main characters didn't act on their feelings the instant the FMC turned 18. In fact, the MMC rejected her and told her to go live her life to the fullest. So...she did. For four long years, during which time she kept her V-card and he remained celibate. But four years later? He was 49 and she was 22. She turned up at his home, and all bets were off, even though he was determined to continue pushing her away.
There was the normal angst and drama, though very lowkey, as well as the usual push/pull between the two main characters. But that was pretty much it. There wasn't a lot of plot going on, and there weren't any other secondary characters to interfere. Even the FMC's parents weren't involved. From start to finish, it was just the two of them, and it took place in less than 24 hours.
Other than a slight recount of what happened on the FMC's 18th birthday, there wasn't any history, and there wasn't any backstory regarding the characters. It felt like a "wham, bam, thank you, Ma'am" type novella written only to help the reader get a bit titillated...and that does happen, but it's so mild that, eh, well, it was mild. Let's leave it at that, shall we? It was worthy of maybe a one-star rating, but that's about all. It wasn't a bad story, and I didn't have an issue with the age gap or anything that occurred in the book. It just fell flat and it felt incomplete and rushed.

Happy Father’s Day… read a daddy book today!
As soon as I received an ARC of Midnight Snack I got stuck right in. I’ve been super excited for this book since it was announced and I wasn’t disappointed at all.
The push and pull between Eden and Nolan for the first half of the book is absolutely delicious. Such perfect taboo goodness; the older man trying to contain himself (as he has been doing for years) and the younger woman pushing his buttons in all the right ways. I always end up highlighting something on nearly every page of Chloe Maine’s books and this one was no different, especially for the exploration of tension and chemistry at the beginning. The yearning, the prolonged excitement - I ate it all up.
The ‘spicy’ stuff wasn’t as ‘spicy’ as I was expecting but it was still really good. I’m a sucker for a nice daddy name calling and breeding session so I obviously fit in snuggly with this book. Chloe Maine gets dirty talk dialogue so right for these topics, I’ll never not enjoy her writing to be honest: so much delectable possessiveness from her MMCs and I adore it.

Chloe, girl, you did it again. Midnight Snack is a HOT age gap, daddy kink, and br33ding, yes, you heard that right, br33ding, and I just freaking ate this book up.

This one was cute! Eden has a crush on her godfather, but he rejects her the night before she turns 18 by telling her that she needs to live a full life. She takes his words to heart and, four years later, is back to get her man.
I enjoyed that Nolan tried to hold back at first, but Eden was on a mission. I wanted to see a little more conversation between the two of them. It seemed like the bulk of their meaningful interaction happened outside of the book. I was disappointed too that most of Nolan's dirty talk was left out. I'd have liked to read that instead of being told that it happened.
This was a cute, short read, though. Thank you to Give Me Books for the ARC. Everything in this review is my opinion!

This is one my favorite authors and I definitely read everything by her. The Conception Ridge series is amazing. These books might be a bit to fluffy for some people but they make a great palate cleanse and the love story always makes me so happy. There’s little to no drama and lots of sugar and spice🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
I did love this one as much as some only because it was too short and I really needed MORE❤️❤️❤️
I needed a bit more back story (separate and together) and a few more details about what these 2 are doing now would have been awesome. It also felt like the main obstacle was the fact she is his best friends’ daughter BUT… we never meet the dad nor hear anything about his reaction to his daughter with his BFF. This story really needed a few more details/ chapters.

It takes a certain type of woman to match his level of wicked. When Eden first 'offered herself' to him, she was way too young for him to even consider. Denying her plea, he told her to get and live life, try new adventures.
Eden sought him out four years later. After that length of time, she knew without question that it was ONLY Nolan that she wanted. But convincing him was another matter.
Thinking to scare her off, Nolan warned her of his more violent tendencies. It didn't have the expected results. She was eager for anything, as long as it was Nolan she learned from.
Their journey into exploring what was between them makes for an intriguing story. One I will read again.
