I’m a lover of nature in the mornings and a writing soul at nights. My name is Nora J. Callaway and I come from Nevada, the beautiful Silver State.
I hold a BA in English Literature and an MA in Creative Writing. For years, I’ve wanted to get my stories out there, my own ‘babies’ as I like to call them, as inspired by my own experience leaving out West and my research of 19th-century American history.
All my life I have been breeding horses, cows and sheep and I’ve been tending to the land. It’s time to tend now to my inner need to grow my stories, my heart-warming Western romance stories, and share them with the rest of you!
I’m here to learn and connect with others who enjoy a cup of black coffee, a humble sunset and a ride with a horse! Bless your hearts, as my nana used to say! Come on, hope in!
overall i enjoyed it- i really liked Alice as a character, and i simply adored the Maddens. Robert grew on me, but i wish there was a little bit more build up to their relationship.
however, the book did have quite a few typos, and while they weren’t distracting enough to stop me from reading, it was distracting.
My biggest two issues with the book were: 1) its repetitiveness - i felt like a lot of the time, i was reading in circles. i understand that perhaps it was just the repetition of thoughts, but it did get boring at times and i found myself skimming more than once. 2) the plot missteps *spoilers* - the biggest plot misstep was 100% the issue with the fire. Ned (the father-in-law) admits to setting the fire that put Lottie at risk to sabotage Alice, but then suddenly it was the bandits that set the fire?? also, the bandits setting fire to the ranch at all made no sense in a way, seeing as it is mentioned multiple times that they do not have this pattern of behavior. - not a misstep, but i will say at times i was very confused with the pacing of the book. How long was Alice there? at one point is says a few weeks, and then with what seemed like no events or specifics, it has been months. Or Jane getting married and then finding out she’s pregnant, which is 100% possible but unlikely she would know so soon back in this time.
Despite those few things, i really enjoyed the book!!
A great story that had my heart racing with family sacrifice, fear of new beginnings with travel, pain from loss of spouse. It also showed us what, self pity, alcohol and a strong wife can do to help her husband recover and make new memories. Alice became a mail order bride so her sister could feel free to marry her love but wouldn’t because she thought she had to take care of Alice. Robert lost his wife during childbirth and it brought him to his knees and he lost all reason and self worth. He was in so much pain he would have nothing to do with his little baby girl because she looked so much like her mother. The plot of this story really has intrigue with Robert’s father-in-law Ned who resented Alice plus a gang who came to steal and destroy the ranch. Alice saved the baby after Ned set fire to the house to blame Alice. Much excitement ensued after. A must read.
There were some typos and better proofreading would be advisable.
This was a story that kept me up late at night to finish because I just couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. Alice came to the ranch by chance due to the ranch foreman deciding that his boss Robert had done enough damage to himself after the loss of his first wife. He was drinking all the time and wouldn't even touch his baby daughter. Marriage of convenience and things start to change. Throw in a meddling father-in-law and some rustlers and you have a great story. Loved the strong woman angle.
I really enjoyed this book! The characters and their storyline grabbed me from the very first page. I thought the book was written very well. I thoroughly enjoyed the extra epilogue at the end!
Alice was missing her father and was worried for her sister giving up her life to keep them together. Robert lost his wife and gives up living. When they meet sparks fly! Many trials come to them both but respect and emotional attachment conquers all. Great book
