In a Nutshell: A beginner-level graphic novel that ought to work well for a really young audience. A sweet story, but too simple to keep slightly older kids interested.

Story Synopsis:
Peaches and her friends Mango and Pogi all live in a place named Pocketon. When a new cat named Taro moves into their neighbourhood, Peaches is determined to befriend her. But Taro likes horror movies and scary books, while Peaches is more of a cute and sweet movie lover. Will they be able to be friends with such differences?

The story is certainly sweet. Verrrry sweet. Okay, it is at a diabetes-inducing level of sweetness! Peaches and her friends are all endearing, but their saccharine levels were off the charts. Even when they were watching a horror movie, their cuteness doesn’t diminish. This probably makes the book perfect for little readers but it also limits its scope to an older audience.

There is not much of a backstory to the friendship of the characters or to the place they live in, which seems home to a variety of anthropomorphic animals. A part of me wondered if I had missed the first book of this series but no: this was the very first one. A Google search revealed that the characters are from the Instagram account @pocket.peaches. As always, I am totally blank about all things Insta, so this book was my first ever glimpse of the characters. That was probably why I felt like I didn’t get to know them at all.

The writing is quite basic. I was hoping for a little more intricate story, but the book kept all aspects at the beginner level as promised, without much substance to the plot or depth to the characters. The message is good though, talking about how lying about your tastes isn’t the right way to make new friends. I also loved how no one in the book judges Peaches for being scared of horror movies. It is a nice lesson about how an inclusive and accepting friendship should work.

The kawaii-style illustrations are perfect for the story, with charming sketches in bright rainbow colours. The book uses a dyslexia-friendly font, which is certainly an advantage.

I can see this book working for the younger age group, say 5-8 years, who are just beginning their graphic novel journey. Older kids might not find it that engrossing, though the discussion about the right ratio for cupcake frosting would be quite interesting to them.

All in all, recommended to the target age group. Kids who love stuff like ‘My Little Pony’ will lap up this cute graphic novel. I am not sure if this is part of a planned series, but this book works nicely as a standalone.

3.25 stars.
(I would have rated this higher had my kids enjoyed this book, but they too found it an okayish one-time read.)

My thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing and Edelweiss+ for the DRC of “Pocket Peaches”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Very cutesy graphic novel aimed for children (would be great for kids aged 5-12), no real conflict and a simple plot. I liked the illustrations and art style.

This short little graphic novel is so incredibly cute and wholesome: the perfect low-stakes, cozy read for a fall evening.

The story follows Peaches (a bunny) when a new cat comes to Pocketown. The cat is rumored to be standoffish and hard to get to know, so of course Peaches decides to do everything she can to befriend her. The story is very simple, and well suited to a young audience, but I still enjoyed it as an adult.

The best comparison I can think to make for this title is to Bluey. Pocket Peaches has the same sweet—but not saccharine—tone and emphasis on communication and emotional intelligence. Also, it’s in full color!

Thanks to Netgalley for providing an ARC. (Yes, I am in fact reading all these graphic novels to try to get my Netgalley stats up… but we don’t need to talk about that. :D)

This was so cute! The art is really precious and I loved how over the top and silly the characters were. There's a great message in here about being yourself and not pretending to like the things your friends like just so they'll like you more. I'd definitely recommend this for kids (plus any adults who enjoy cutesy graphics like I do).

This was super cute and adorable. Although the plot is very straightforward with zero conflict, it’s fun read for when you want something light and easy. The colour palette is so sweet and soothing.

So frickin' adorable! Love love the color scheme and art style. The story is simple but carries an important message for its intended audience. The beauty of friendship and the blessings of ordinary tasks made fun with your friends. Also the value of honesty and forgiveness especially when meeting new people for new friendships. That being yourself is always best and easiest than acting like someone you are not. Lovely, adorably funny story for persons of all ages but especially for the youngsters. Makes a wonderful intro to graphic novels for the kids!

I really needed a cute, cosy read, and this very much delivered. It's short but super sweet, with a lovely message about friendship. The character art and use of colour were truly so adorable. I would love an extensive series about these characters, following them in their daily lives.

Aww! Characters reminiscent of "Hello Kitty" cavort throughout the pages in this gentle, all-ages graphic novel. The effect is very sweet and cute, with a good message about friendship and the pitfalls of trying to be someone you are not in order to impress others.

'Why can't I think suddenly? Come on, think! What's something scary?'

OMG? This is basically THE book about friendship and making friends like everyone should read this ASAP. It's so heartwarming and wholesome ahh 🥹🥹

Really don't want to give anything away but I have to say I loved everything especially their debates about frosting to cupcake ratio and Peach's dog stealing a hotdog was hilarious. Taro is obvs the cutest.

Oh and the art is adorable!

In short, 10/10, no notes

This is an early graphic novel reader and the first I've stumbled upon that I've actually liked! This book has adorable art and a simple but cute story of the obstacles of trying to make friends. I can see this going on to create a whole little world and beloved cast of characters, it already feels like a cozy TV show I could find myself revisiting often.

Peach wants to befriend the new person person in town, Taro.

This book is filled to the brim with sweetness, sugar in all forms, and the cutest little characters ever. I just adored it.

I look forward to more in this series in the future and I can’t wait to see what happens next in this cute little town.

Also - I was ridiculously excited to see the Sailor Moon fan nod. Too precious.

I received this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

This was an adorable and sweet graphic novel and boy I am happy that I had the chance to read it! In this one we meet Peaches, a cute adorable bunny living in a pretty dang adorable world! Peaches meets a new, potential, friend and she is more then eager to find out what makes her tick. She has a book that she needs to bring back so she has a way to make conversation. Which we all know isn’t always easy when meeting a potential new friend! It was really adorable to see Peaches try to find Taro and try to get that conversation started! And what will Peaches do, because if you think this should just be an OK thing, well Taro loves all things spooky and scary (zombies, horror, gore, let’s go) but Peaches loves magical girls and cute frilly things. Yep, you can see the problem, right? I was curious what Peaches would do, would she go for honesty? Or really be so desperate to make a new friend that she would make up things? The answer is the last one and I was just shaking my head and go, oh no Peaches. Be honest!

But, I loved that Peaches was able to ask Taro if she wanted to come for a sleepover/movie marathon. I was curious how that movie marathon would go. Peaches is not the only one not into horror, haha. I was also hoping very much that she would be able to confess, to be honest, to let Taro know that she wants to be friends but wasn’t into the spooky stuff. I won’t spoil much, but I will say I loved what happens near the end, that made me smile!

The art in this one is just so cute, really, it is way too cute. You just want to step into the book and be enveloped in the cute and soft! The colours are all soft and sweet. I love them.

All in all, a sweet book about being honest, about friendship, and about having a good time! I would recommend it.

In Pocket Peaches we follow some really cute animal friends! One of them is a bunny who tries to make a new friend but ends up almost messing things up.

The art isn’t something special, just simple and cute. The story is nice but the scenes sometimes felt a little disconnected.

I honestly expected a bit more from the story when I started reading. It felt like a beginner level graphic novel that could use some work to make it better. I enjoyed it and I’m thankful I got this ARC from NetGalley, in exchange for my honest review.

I am not sure how I feel about this book, which usually means I am not the intended audience. I thought the art was really cute and I think my students would enjoy it.

I don't know why, but I really like 'Pocket Peaches'.

Usually with comics like this, that aim to be cute, but especially comics like this that aim to be cute and are for young children - that aspire for nothing further than to teach one particular lesson, and be about emotional education - I can go, "Yeah, it's cute, but what else is there?", and I can easily move on and forget about it. But with 'Pocket Peaches', which is as cute, cartoony, and targeted towards tots as you can get, I find I adore this eighty-page, unabashedly cutesy critter tale that's light on conflict and is about friendship.

It's... so warm and fuzzy and fluffy and funny, and lovable, positive and earnest.

Set in a lovely little town called Pocketon, 'Pocket Peaches' is like 'Bluey', 'Miffy' (not so much 'Hello Kitty'), 'Bing', 'Hey Duggee', and 'Cult of the Lamb' (animal design wise, although...), and it stars a white rabbit named Peaches, a bear named Cream, a purple cat interested in the occult named Taro, and other cats, plus dogs (including Peaches' pet dog Sesame... uhhh), wolves, pigs, cows, elephants, tanukis, and foxes. There is also a book club, a 'Book of Monsters', carrots, a café, pastries, a hotdog, snacks, cookie making, frosted cupcake making, a movie night/slumber party, fluffy blankets, extra heavy blankets, super soft blankets, and shoulder angels.

It's a simple friendship fable, a tale as old as time, about accepting each others' differences, being honest, opening up, and becoming best friends. It is so cute, cartoony, charming, feminine and funny (I'm repeating myself, aren't I? Goddess I can't help it!), that I find it to be irresistible and unforgettable. It was obviously made with love, passion and compassion; like I stated above, there is an earnestness to it; to the whole little pocket universe of 'Pocket Peaches'. It's endearing in its sweet, cutesy-pie simplicity.

Children will gravitate towards 'Pocket Peaches', and I welcome it. It should be made into a TV series; heck, the comic volume is already a pilot episode put to print. If you are in the mood for cuteness, lightness and all-shining positivity in a world that desperately, vitally needs it, I recommend 'Pocket Peaches'.

Or maybe I like it because Peaches and her friends are fans of an in-universe magical girl cat TV show, 'Mew Mew: Dream Guardian'. Magical girls all the way! And book clubs, cafés, slumber parties, baked goods, and (possible) gothic witchery.

Scrumptious!

Final Score: 4/5

Seriously sugary sweet. The theme of being yourself is obvious and for the adult reader, predictable. Good for kids who like fluffy bunnies and super cute animal stories. The biggest issue I had is the fact that they ARE animals and the main character has a pet DOG!!! And they are not really wearing clothes, but that was secondary.
