I wanted to love this book, but I just can’t. It felt inconsistent to me at parts, unclear at others, and downright confusing at the end. But let’s start with my biggest gripe; the characters with a lack of character.
I HATE books where the kids are disrespectful whiny brats. They were absolutely that and then some in this book. They were manipulative, dismissive, and unkind. This is the woman that raised them and provided for their needs, but they treated her like an unwelcome stranger. But Libby still panders to them and is constantly going on about her “perfect family”, when these kids needed a major reality check. Not only that, but there was drinking and drug use which blew my mind.
Initially, I felt bad for Libby. That quickly changed as she repeatedly made immoral decisions all in the band of protecting her family. As someone with childhood trauma, I can fully appreciate how your past experiences can shape you, but this was misplaced. Not only that, it seemed backwards. She was the victim of abuse and neglect, but was willing to enable her family to carry out those same acts, or worse… I lost all respect for her character once she burned the nail.
Gemma was a weird one for me. If she stated that Ian was 5 when his father died, why would she assume he’d have any knowledge of crimes his father had committed?? The same goes for Marian. If she’d turned her husband in after finding the other boy, why is there an assumption she would know of the others? Granted, this WAS the case, but that was such a strange leap to make IMO. To be that determined to go and potentially overturn someone’s life because you felt entitled to knowledge they likely didn’t have. I know this was simply to carry the plot, but it was paper thin.
Now, back to the story being confusing. I feel like the age of the kids when Libby came into their lives changed at least once. That could be an oversight on my part, but there was just something that felt off there. The parts of Gemma’s story about Marian and Ian leaving the country and changing their names would’ve made sense, but later faltered. Why would they remain in the same house? And if they hadn’t, how did the bones get moved to the basement? It seems some of the time could’ve been spent clarifying after Johnathan’s arrest. Understanding he was the last victim was easy, but never being given a motive for why Marian would have “molded him” was frustrating. I also don’t understand how he wasn’t returned to his family. It was not explained in any way either, to what extent Nathan was involved. Was it simply his “knowledge” that his father was a serial killer? What secrets was he made to keep?
And the last confusing part got me was the end. Why bother to give us an update a year after, but not fill in the holes. Instead, we were given another confusing element. Apparently, Libby had pushed her mother down the stairs?? Why and when had this happened? And what powder was put in Marian’s tea? Did Libby poison or drug her? And why was Nathan (Kieran) kidnapped??
There were just too many things that bothered me to say I loved this book. It’s a shame because it’s a solid premise that could be done really well. I also am not a fan of excessive language in books. I would not seek out other books by this author for that and the fact that the story left me with more questions than answers.
Sorry for the ramble! If you read it, please comment to lmk if I just completely missed something or your take on any bits that bothered or confused me.
