Too many plot holes made the end confusing. Also why did Libby say her brother hung himself and Gemma said he slit his wrists? That discrepancy/any detail other than it being a suicide never played into the story.
Also, why did Marian bother changing their names if they lived in the same house? it also mentioned the fled to Spain, then came back. Why didn’t the police find the boys’ bones then? And what was the relationship with Johnathon? Did he befriend Libby to get close to the Curtises or he discovered who they were after? I was also unsure if we were supposed to think Marian/Eloise was the predator or if she just kidnapped the one baby to keep and her husband did the rest. The authors never explained her reasoning either.
There was also a couple lines where they wrote she felt like she was playing a role, and it was almost back to back. Libby also repetitively talked about what a perfect family she has, when her kids keep telling her she’s not even their real mom, etc.

Disclaimer: I fell ill whilst reading this so it was shelved for some 10 days while I recovered. So apologies for the delay in posting my review for the blog tour.

This dynamic writing duo have done it again with another compelling psychological thriller with an addictive plot that is engaging from start to finish. It centres on Libby, a paramedic, who responds to a call with her partner on shift, Jonathan, where a teenage girl has been found unconcious. Upon arrival, Libby can see that she is clearly under the influence of drugs. But had she taken them willingly? Or had she been drugged? The girl, Hayley, was distraught as well as disoriented stating she had escaped from a locked room where she had been locked up. But this is all too close to home for Libby who recognised Hayley as being one of her stepdaughter Sienna's friends. But then she comes across some troubling pieces of information which lead Libby to thinking that her children may have been involved in Hayley's abduction.

We also meet Gemma, a woman who hosts a small blog devoted to serial killer Colin Wallace who was said to be responsible for the abduction of many missing boys in the eighties. But then Wallace was sent down for the boy he was caught with though he denied responsibility of any others, even after having made a full confession to them prior to going on record. Wallace then died in prison taking his secrets to the grave. But now Gemma has arrived in Bournemouth after hearing about Hayley's abduction online based on its similarities to Wallace's crimes. She begins to dig further and tries confronting Libby with her information but to no avail.

Then just as she was closing in, the predator becomes the prey. Is it too late to save Gemma? What really happened all those years ago? And how can she protect her family at all costs?

This was a compelling read that I devoured just as soon as I was a little better. I did guess the villain and thensome but that never ruins my enjoyment of a well told story. I did find Libby's constant second guessing everything a little tiresome but I found the teenage angst of Sam and Sienna even moreso.

Still, there are plenty of twists along the way to keep you entertained as well as guessing as little by little the secrets and lies all start to unravel. Overall, an enjoyable read.

I would like to thank #SallyRigby, #AmandaAshby, #Netgalley, #BoldwoodBooks and #RachelsRandomResources for an ARC of #TheStepmother in exchange for an honest review.

I love a good twist and the stepmother certainly delivered. This was more of a slow paced book that didn’t quite keep my attention at times. I enjoyed the mystery of who was behind Haley’s attack but I don’t see how that one night of being drugged in a storage unit was enough to draw Gemma to believe it was a relative of her brother’s killer. The girl wasn’t kidnapped for a long period and no other people were missing. The ending had me confused also. if the killer’s wife and kid went into hiding, how were all the bones buried in their basement? Wouldn’t the police have checked there? Wouldn’t everyone know they were still living in that house? I liked the twist but too many plot holes.

Yet again this author duo have written another book that has left me speechless at times. Chock full of twists and turns this is a book that will have you enthralled from the very start. Filled with characters that you really won’t know whether to trust them or not . One chapter I was totally trusting a certain character and then a few chapters on I was beginning to doubt myself. Each chapter was a page turner and because of this I read this book in two sittings. Of course I knew who the culprit was as I had that worked out in my head quite early on but of course I was completely off the track and when it was revealed I was absolutely lost for words. I love an epilogue in a book as to me it ties up everything nicely and this one was simply the icing on the cake, Simply marvellous. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I did not enjoy this book as much as I had enjoyed the Cornwall Murder Mystery series which as of this review has two books in it, The Stepmother is still better than most thrillers. The story slowly unfolds and like Libby makes the reader try to figure out exactly what is happening with her husband and her two teenage stepchildren Sam and Sierra.

How did this book find me? I enjoy the author's books.

This was a slog. I had trouble keeping focused and pretty much didn't like ANY of the characters. Except the cat.

I still gave it 4 stars as I'm sure I'm in the minority and this was just a fluke.

I even contemplated not finishing and revisiting it later. But slog along, I did.

Never have I been SO glad to finish a book!

I do admit that I did NOT see that ending coming, and it made it ALL worth it in the end.

I received an ARC of this book from the authors, and this is my honest review.

My Review:
Enjoyed!!!!! This was my first book by these another’s and it certainly won’t be my last. I read this in just a few sittings. I loved the plot. A mother willing to do anything to protect her children is right up my alley. I am like that with my own son and could totally relate to that character. In fact, all the characters were great. I didn’t know who to trust in this one. They were all shady and willing to keep secrets at all costs. That’s my kind of book. Now let’s talk about that wow of an ending. I was like OMG. It was definitely shocking and left me speechless. I was so sad to see this one end. I got so involved with all of it. I really felt like I was right there living this story with everyone. I love that in a book.

In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This one by this writing duo for some reason this time is badged under their separate names so they no longer appear as they did in my list. I do wish publishers wouldn't mess about like this !!!
Love the cover on it, too....the story itself holds some crashing old surprises here and there-well, they shocked ME, anyway !
I liked how Libby felt an obligation to Julia, who she'd never met. That was sweet. The same with young Gemma and her obligations, too. I didn't feel we really got to know Sienna very well as a character as she didn't appear in no way as often as Sam does, which was a shame.
I laughed aloud at the line, "...with all the swagger of someone who actually paid rent".....that tickled me. However, I didn't like the elephant fable mention. That upset me....so some ups and downs for sure.
I've docked one star as I did manage to get pretty confused near the end as things revealed themselves. I zipped back pages a few times trying to make sense of something someone said or did but I'm not sure I ever fully resolved it in my own head !
The author sent me an advanced copy so I will forward any errors I spotted over to her directly.
I'd still read another by these ladies but I did find the preceding books easier to get on with, but maybe that's just me !

Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the copy of The Stepmother. The start was really slow, and for the first half I was wondering why there were so many five star reviews. Then the book got interesting! The slow buildup kind of made sense, but I wish it had been interspersed with some interesting elements. I liked the complex story and how we slowly learned more about what Sienna and Sam were doing that night. This is a good thriller, and the parts about how families evolve was a nice addition. 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars.

Wow! This book is solid five stars for me. How far would you go to protect your children or your family? As a mother, this will make you think. This story was amazing, so many twists and turns. So many times I thought I had it all figured out and each time I was wrong! This was a quick read, it kept me engaged all the away through and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. I will definitely be reading more from these authors.

Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood books for access to this arc in exchange for my honest review.

Well, this book was quite slow paced and I thought it was quite predictable until I was proved wrong. I was so sure I had it figured out since the beginning. But the twists at the end blown me away. I'm happy to have read this book.

While I enjoyed most of the book, I do believe it could’ve been more streamlined. I think too much time was wasted in Libbys head with her repetitive thoughts and her not communicating and asking questions.

A girl has been found injured after she had been kidnapped. A woman whose brother went missing many years ago and thinks that the perpetrator did more than he was ever charged for is looking into things and a step-mother who has suspicions about her stepson is also finding out things she would rather not. Libby Curtis is the stepmother who has her own issues about her older brother from many years ago and is finding her adopted family has a past she never realised when she fell for Nathan, her husband and the father of the twins- Sam and Sienna. Is Sam hiding something and what on earth has happened in the past for all this to come crashing down?

This is an engaging read, and complex to begin with as there are numerous inroads as to who is looking into the crime from different perspectives (it's well written and hence easy to follow). Both Sam and Sienna have their own secrets, as it appears do most of the main characters in one way or another making this a real page turner. A twist I didn’t see coming and one cleverly crafted. An entertaining read that kept me between the pages

Needs Proofreading

While the story quickly brought you in there were inconsistencies. Nathan’s birth year was 1982 then it was 1978. Gemma’s age was given as 37 then a mention of her 5 years older 44 year old friend. Not to be petty but readers are intelligent people. The lack of proofreading seems sloppy. Also, wouldn’t Nathan and Jonathan have known each other? Why would Libby’s mother write a stack of letters to Gemma? There was no indication of an awareness or a connection between those two women. Story had definite potential but fell short.

I really wanted to like this but it was slow to get going and then it picked up 80% in but the ending was so unbelievable. The two kids in the storyline were very troubled but Lilly kept saying what a wonderful family she had.
The ending just left me scratching my head. I should have left it as a DNF.

Another gripping, well-written page-turner from the writing duo of Sally Rigby and Amanda Ashby. It kept me engrossed in the story from cover to cover with an unexpected twist that made for the perfect ending.
Libby Curtis is the stepmother, who loves her husband and children like they were her own. Nathan married Libby 10 years ago when the twins were 7 and their natural mother died in childbirth. They are 17 now. The book starts with Libby, who is a paramedic, attending a call of an injured female in a drug induced stupor. Her partner Jonathan notices that Libby is not looking well and kind of stumbling. He is worried, but the issue is that Libby recognizes the girl as Hayley, a friend of her daughter, Sienna. Hayley is a mess and confused but says she had been locked up but she escaped. Things only get worse when Libby discovers some unsettling information that seem to point to her children being involved in whatever happened to Hayley. Sam is being secretive and Libby finds evidence in his car that makes her suspect him of something to do with Hayley, but what exactly? Sienna is going through a goth phase, dressing in all black, and staying in her room alone not hanging out with friends. She is being insolent and very disrespectful to Libby and has her own secrets. We can’t forget about Nathan’s frail, elderly mom. She seems too sweet and endearing What’s really going on? What is she hiding? The trouble that happened with Hayley created a snowball effect. Their lives are going to change when secrets from the past start to unravel. It starts when an unknown blogger comes to Bournemouth and approaches Libby with startling accusations about her family’s past. Gemma, the blogger, seems a little bit quirky but in a good way. She has a blog dedicated to Colin Wallace, a killer suspected of killing missing boys years ago. She is determined to uncover the mystery of her brother’s kidnapping from back then and something about Hayley’s abduction reminds her of the murder that Colin was convicted of. She does some digging and the clues lead her to Libby and Nathan in Bournemouth. Once Gemma puts herself in the middle of it all, the story takes a drastic turn, and everything you thought you had figured out goes in another direction.
This is a psychological/domestic thriller that explores themes of how far a mother would go to protect her children, even if they aren’t her own. It also provides insight into complicated family relationships when deception and lies creep in.
The characters are believable and well-rounded with unique personalities that keep the story fresh and exciting. The more you get to know them you realize that you don’t know who you can trust because everyone has some kind of secret or hidden agenda.
The writer’s voice Is captivating and realistic. The prose is lyrical, powerful, and flows effortlessly.
A thrilling and suspenseful plot paired with well-paced twists and turns made this book a delightful read. It was a mystery clear to the end when everything came together in an explosive conclusion.
Throughout the entire story, we are reminded that Libby will always protect her family. It makes me question how far would I go to protect my family? Does that include illegal activities or even worse, killing someone? Very thought-provoking.
Recommendation
Sally Rigby and Amanda Ashby have given us a psychological thriller that is written with precision and detailed observations. Like the last book of theirs that I read, it has everything that I want in a psychological thriller. I highly recommend not only this book, but all of the books that this power duo have written together. They are on my must-read list. I applaud Sally and Amanda for their talent of grabbing a readers attention and keeping it with perfectly written stories. I give The Stepmother a Goodreads rating 4 and a job well done

I wanted to love this book, but I just can’t. It felt inconsistent to me at parts, unclear at others, and downright confusing at the end. But let’s start with my biggest gripe; the characters with a lack of character.

I HATE books where the kids are disrespectful whiny brats. They were absolutely that and then some in this book. They were manipulative, dismissive, and unkind. This is the woman that raised them and provided for their needs, but they treated her like an unwelcome stranger. But Libby still panders to them and is constantly going on about her “perfect family”, when these kids needed a major reality check. Not only that, but there was drinking and drug use which blew my mind.

Initially, I felt bad for Libby. That quickly changed as she repeatedly made immoral decisions all in the band of protecting her family. As someone with childhood trauma, I can fully appreciate how your past experiences can shape you, but this was misplaced. Not only that, it seemed backwards. She was the victim of abuse and neglect, but was willing to enable her family to carry out those same acts, or worse… I lost all respect for her character once she burned the nail.

Gemma was a weird one for me. If she stated that Ian was 5 when his father died, why would she assume he’d have any knowledge of crimes his father had committed?? The same goes for Marian. If she’d turned her husband in after finding the other boy, why is there an assumption she would know of the others? Granted, this WAS the case, but that was such a strange leap to make IMO. To be that determined to go and potentially overturn someone’s life because you felt entitled to knowledge they likely didn’t have. I know this was simply to carry the plot, but it was paper thin.

Now, back to the story being confusing. I feel like the age of the kids when Libby came into their lives changed at least once. That could be an oversight on my part, but there was just something that felt off there. The parts of Gemma’s story about Marian and Ian leaving the country and changing their names would’ve made sense, but later faltered. Why would they remain in the same house? And if they hadn’t, how did the bones get moved to the basement? It seems some of the time could’ve been spent clarifying after Johnathan’s arrest. Understanding he was the last victim was easy, but never being given a motive for why Marian would have “molded him” was frustrating. I also don’t understand how he wasn’t returned to his family. It was not explained in any way either, to what extent Nathan was involved. Was it simply his “knowledge” that his father was a serial killer? What secrets was he made to keep?

And the last confusing part got me was the end. Why bother to give us an update a year after, but not fill in the holes. Instead, we were given another confusing element. Apparently, Libby had pushed her mother down the stairs?? Why and when had this happened? And what powder was put in Marian’s tea? Did Libby poison or drug her? And why was Nathan (Kieran) kidnapped??

There were just too many things that bothered me to say I loved this book. It’s a shame because it’s a solid premise that could be done really well. I also am not a fan of excessive language in books. I would not seek out other books by this author for that and the fact that the story left me with more questions than answers.

Sorry for the ramble! If you read it, please comment to lmk if I just completely missed something or your take on any bits that bothered or confused me.

This is the first time I have read a book by this writing duo but it won't be the last. I have been a huge fan and Sally Rigby’s ‘Cavendish & Walker’ series and I was intrigued as to how I would like this one. It didn't disappoint at all! I always wonder with writing duos, how it all works and whether it comes across as one cohesive voice and in this case it does. If I picked this book up blind I would never have guessed it was written by two people. I will definitely be looking out for more books by these two!

Libby Curtis never wanted children until she met a gorgeous widower, Nathan, who had young twins. Now ten years later she can't imagine life without Sam and Sienna and she would do anything to protect them. And she means anything. When a teenager is found on the side of the road, Libby is one of the first responders in her role as a paramedic. Her first thoughts are that thankfully it's not Sienna. But she doesn't realise that her whole family is involved somehow in this incident. When she finds a piece of evidence in her stepson’s car she can't believe that he would have been able to do this! Where has her sweet young boy gone? Libby must find out the truth to stop her family from being torn apart but there is someone out there who wants to expose the family for what they have done.

I was enthralled by this book from the very start and I flew through it in one day. It kept my attention with all its twists and turns and there was plenty of action and it was chock full of tension! Did I guess who the ‘bad guy’ was, yes I did but I definitely did not get the background and the reasons for their motivation! You were kept guessing by the authors for quite a long time and there are so many secrets and lies that is it hard to unravel them.

Let me know if you pick this one up!

Title: The Step Mother

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

The Step Mother caught me off guard in the best possible way. Going into this read with hardly any prior knowledge, I was pleasantly surprised by the intricate web of suspense and emotion that unfolded before me. Although it started as a slow burn, the story quickly gained momentum, entangling me in its gripping narrative.

One of the book's greatest strengths lies in its masterful use of twists and turns. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, the author skillfully unraveled a new layer of complexity, leaving me constantly guessing and on the edge of my seat. The surprises were frequent and well-executed, making the reading experience incredibly engaging.

What struck me the most was how The Step Mother challenged the notion of family. Through its storytelling, the book delves into the depths of human relationships and highlights the idea that blood ties are not always indicative of true family. It explores the complexities and dynamics that can arise between step-parents and step-children, ultimately reminding us that bonds can be forged beyond mere biology.

While the book had me hooked from start to finish, there were a few instances where the pacing felt slightly sluggish. However, this minor setback was quickly overshadowed by the overall strength of the plot and the author's ability to keep me invested in the characters' journeys.

In conclusion, The Step Mother is a captivating and suspenseful read packed with unexpected twists and a powerful message about the nature of family. Despite a slow start, the book quickly gains momentum, delivering an ending that will leave readers stunned. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers that keep you guessing until the very end, I highly recommend giving this book a chance.

TRIGGER WARNING: suicide
Libby Curtis is a paramedic and is shocked to be called out to a teenager who may have been drugged and held against her will. She is upset and confused to discover a link with her stepson who seems to have the victim's false fingernail in his car. Could he be a monster and will she protect him?
The Stepmother is a psychological thriller set in the UK.
Libby fell in love with Nathan and, although never wanting children herself, has been a dedicated mum to his children Sam and Sienna. Now they are teens and rebelling against their parents. Libby attends a patient she recognises and is devastated when she finds a clue that links to her stepson. She battles with her conscience as she hides evidence that incriminates Sam but can't reconcile the criminal activity with her knowledge of the boy she raised. She is determined to protect him at all costs as she couldn't save her brother who killed himself.
Meanwhile Gemma is obsessed with a crime from the past. A paedophile was convicted of one crime but there are a string of families with no answers about their missing loved ones. She wants to find the truth and bring peace to the families who are still grieving. Her investigation leads her to the Curtis family...
The book is written in the third person to show Libby and Gemma's journey of discovery. I did like the little detail about Gemma's guinea pigs being a guinea mum myself! Both women have to balance their families against the truth, the personal feelings versus what is right. I enjoyed the 'what if' element as it made me think carefully about what lengths I would go to to protect my own family whilst also considering the victims, law and truth.
The Stepmother is a tense and thought provoking book about the choices we make to protect our loved ones.

Libby married Nathan when he was a widower with twins, Sam and Sienna, age 7. Before, she had never had any desire to have children but for the last ten years, her love for her stepchildren, now 17, has been as though they are her own children. However, Sam has been going through a secretive stage and she learns by her digital detective skills that he has been doing bad things. In addition, Sienna is going through a Goth stage where she dresses in black and is sarcastic to Libby.

Libby works as a Paramedic and on a call one evening, she attends a young girl, Hayley, who is a friend of Sienna. The girl has drugs in her systems and has been injured by someone. Finding some evidence in Sam’s car, she thinks he may have had something to do with Haylee’s injuries. She knows she has to keep this a secret right now to see what more she can learn because protecting her children is everything.

When Libby was young she had been attacked by her mother’s boyfriend and it has left her with frightening flashbacks. This makes Hayley’s injuries even more scary for her.

As the tension builds in this book many questions are answered and truths come spilling out. This perfectly woven plot will keep the reader turning pages to find answers to intricate questions. Very well written and compelling. Enjoy!

Another winner for this writing duo! So many times I thought I had it figured out only to have another twist thrown in.
Libby is a paramedic with teenage twin stepchildren. Since marrying their father when they were infants she has devoted herself to being the perfect mother for them. Now they are going through rebellious phases and barely speak to her.
Gemma lives with her two guinea pigs (rescued from a research lab-way to go Gemma!) and works in a dead end jobs while she investigated her brother's disappearance. Is there a connection between them?
Libby answers a call for a injured young girl who appears to have been abducted. This brings back flashbacks to her unhappy past, and it becomes worse when she realizes the victim is a friend of her children. Do they know anything about this?
This book was a fast read as I read late into the night to find the answers to these questions. The characters' pasts are revealed throughout the book. They are realistic and likable. Any reader who has had teenagers can empathize with Libby. Gemma may have dropped out of college but she researches her brother's disappearance with a dogged determination and tenaciousness.
I always enjoy books by this writing duo. Their plots are good, characters believable, and the endings satisfying. I look forward to many more stories from them.

This story centres around Libby, a paramedic, who responds to a call where a teenage girl has been found on the side of a road, unconscious. When the girl , Hayley, comes to, she explains that she was kidnapped and escaped from a locked room. Libby quickly realizes that Hayley is one of her daughter's friends. Libby soon comes across some information that which lead her to believe that her stepchildren may be involved in Hayley's disappearance. How far will Libby go to protect her family?

I thought this book was super predictable, but I was proved wrong! This author duo does a tremendous job at building up suspense and weaving in many twists and turns. Not only is this a great thriller, but the authors really dive into human relationships. They examine different family types and relationships. I was super invested in the character development and the various journeys each family member took.

I was hooked from start to finish, There are a few points where it gets a bit slow, which is the main reason I deducted a start. Nonetheless, it is a great and entertaining thriller. The ending really packs a punch. Again, I thought I had everything figured out, but I was sure wrong!

Reading Between the Wines book review #130/115(met goal in Sept!) for 2023:
Rating: 4 🍷 🍷 🍷 🍷
Book: The Stepmother
Author: Sally Rigby & Amanda Ashby
Available Now!!

Sipping thoughts: The love of a mother is usually unrelenting, but you don’t always hear that about a stepmother’s love. However, Libby, stepmother to Sam and Sienna, and wife to Nathan, loves them like her own family. She has stepped in as a mother and wife. Does that mean she would do anything to protect them when there is an attack on someone close to them and another crime that hits close to home? Or does it mean she will do anything, herself, to protect her family at all costs? I missed the small clues and fell for the red herrings and loved the reveal and the mystery behind it.

A definite must read for fans of psychological thrillers with unforeseeable twists!
As far as Libby Curtis knows she is living her dream, even though the children are now the typical teenage grumps, but when a girl from their school is found after being abducted, drugged and held in an old lockup unit overnight, the whole family’s lives change.
Libby is a paramedic and is the attending ambulance crew called out for the girl, instantly recognising her and identifying her to the police, so she see first hand what state the girl has been left it. It is one of her daughter’s ex friends.
As Libby begins to question her children’s involvement with the situation she is approached by a stranger, a woman asking questions about her husband, calming her husband might not be the man she thought he is, with a dark past of his own.
The past starts to come to the surface and becomes entwined with the abduction of the teenage girl and Libby’s life begins to unravel leading her down paths that no one will see coming.
There are definitely twists and turns aplenty that will keep you reading late into the night!
