The Senator

Rate this book
★ Now a Top 10 Mafia Romance Bestseller! ★

I prepared for an arranged marriage to a Made Man my whole life…but Mark White is not a made man. And he never wanted to marry at all, especially not, it turns out, to me.

Eleanna Delagdo knew she wouldn’t marry for love. She planned on a strategic alliance with a powerful, hot-blooded mafioso. She was ready for all that would be required of a mafia princess; elegance, loyalty, discretion. She’d be a partner, not a lover, but in return she would gain respect, protection and finally, a family of her own.

And then she was matched with him.

Mark White is America’s golden boy. The country’s youngest playboy senator is polished, charming, alluring. He is polite and controlled, warm and magnetic.

At least, when the cameras are on.

The real Mark White is a different story. One Eleanna shouldn’t try to uncover, and definitely shouldn’t fall in love with. Because he is a closed book that can never be opened, not even for his wife.

His beautiful, sweet, much-too-tempting wife…

Worlds collide, families plot, secrets are revealed and tensions grow unbearably hot. Can they use the heat to forge a unique partnership all their own or will their marriage—go up in the flames?

The Senator is an action-packed enemies-to-lovers story that starts a multi-book mafia saga. While it does not end on a cliff hanger, some questions in this book will be left unanswered. Everyone in this epic story is a morally gray criminal, most are true enemies. You can expect characters, scenes and language befitting the underworld. Reader discretion is advised.

I love mafia.
I love secret identity.
I love women who don’t take no for an answer and sass back.

This book has it all. Plus the spice 🥵

Mark and Ellie were a great pairing 🫠

Ellie being the princess and first to marry, expecting a certain type of relationship and getting something entirely different was a shock. I honestly enjoyed how she managed to play the game with Mark and did it better than him 😅 Mark was a whole other thing and I can’t get into it without spilling too many beans! 🥵

Lori did a brilliant job setting this world up and I can’t wait for more from this world in the next book!!! 🖤

Disclaimer : I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I started reading The Senator by Lori Kent with the only expectation that it was a mafia story. At first I wasn't so sure. I would have prefer more details on the mafia universe we were in than knowing what the main character was wearing for this and that occasion.

But the character of Ellie was sweet and I wanted to know more about her. What would become of the mafia princess and her dream of a powerful partnership? Mark on the other hand, was annoying me to no end. What was his deal? Why was he so cold and mean to her? I didn't know what to think of him. Obviously there was more than the author was letting us know. I somehow loved hating him yet wishing he'd change.

When the truth finally came out, I was thrown back. I certainly didn't see that one coming. And what he asked from her! I would have smacked him had it been me. The suspense was strong and I finished the last chapters, totally ignoring my husband until the last page.

The alternative POV of Ellie and Mark was a very interesting way to get the story to progress and to give us insides on their thoughts. I usually prefer a writing style more descriptive and lyrical but for that kind of story, short and fast worked very well.

The side characters are lovable and they add flavours to the story. I'm really curious to know what will happen of Luna and I absolutely love Tyson.

The romance is definitely there and yes, for those who loves it, spicy as hell. 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Overall, I really enjoyed The Senator and I will certainly read the sequel. I highly recommend this book for all of you out there in search of a good hot romance and thrilling story.

I received an ARC copy of this book.

Dark mafia romance? Arranged Marriage? Why yes please! This book was so much more than I expected. There are so many layers to the characters and the plot. It was intricate and I'm mad. I'm mad because I need the next book immediately!

Mark White appears to be the perfect, funny, sexy, loving husband. Until the cameras are off and the press is gone. Then he is cold, distant, and wants nothing to do with his new wife Ellie.

Ellie is a niave and sheltered. Her family is LA Familia. And she is their princessa. She isn't spoiled or bratty. She knows what is expected of her as a mafia wife. But she isn't prepared for Mark White.

Neither one of these maim characters were ready for the other. Mark both loathes her and is intrigued. Ellie is appalled and turned on by her husband. Neither party could predict where this story goes.

My only criticism is the story drags a little after the wedding. However, it's a good story. Solid 4/5

Huh..... okay.... not what I pictured Mark would be. He talks too much in his POV? And his coldness is like cringey?
The times where Ellie seen or described him as cold I thought it was like Christian Grey cold.

The last few pages or something went on too fast, like oh–shit it's over baby let's "focus" on us.

And the 🌶️ scenes? What the actual fudgE? I mean, how is it that fast? and boy— does Mark sounded like a teenage boy undone lol.

I mean Lori Kent is pretty descriptive about how Ellie and Mark described each other which I think is pretty corny. My imagination is at its bare minimum. It was so long for me to get to the "oh i'm actually reading this" state.

Is it sweet? 🙅🏻‍♀️
Spicy enough? Defo noT 🙅🏻‍♀️
Makes you all "awwhhh"? Eh... no for me
Got you curious about Mark? Absolutely noT

I just think the writing is made for an easy read. I'd love it if I'm 16.

So... uh... but glad TikTok's recommendation kinda failed me again.

But all the best for the author! 🫵🏼 would still read her books to see her growth as well.

This book was a wild ride in the best possible way! I absolutely loved the world building and character building of each main character. The supporting characters were also very interesting and had great personalities opening up possibilities for future books. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next. I definitely recommend this book and am looking forward to reading the next book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I enjoyed this book and most of the time couldn’t put it down!
I love a good mafia romance & this felt like a fresh take.
I do feel like some things happened abruptly & a bit rushed in some cases. It had a nice HEA even with it being open for more to happen in potential books.

Mafia? Secret identity? A woman who won't take no for an answer? Crazy found family? Hilarious best friends? YES YES YES!

Eleanna was the bride who'd been preparing herself for a marriage all her life. She was one of the most dynamic characters I’d ever read! Gorgeous, strong and curious! There was not one dull moment with this woman.

Mark, our dear Senator annoyed me for more than half the novel. He was persistently trying to keep a distance from Eleanna, being rude to her and ignoring her despite the pull her felt. But then things changed. AND OH HOW THEY CHANGED. Her literally bringing him to his knees and him begging her to let him stay just YUM.

When the plot twist was revealed, things eventually did make sense but it seemed too stretched and juvenile and common. As if not actual thought was put into the revenge and it just happened to be a plot. The smut was cringe and boring but their chemistry made up for it so I’ll let it go.

CANNOT WAIT GOT LUNA’S BOOK!

If "I can fix him" was a person, Eleanna, the FMC, is it. She's a likable character, but sister will definitely let someone fool her once, twice, six times if she cared about them enough. Mark White was definitely not what I thought he would be and AMEN for that. I really liked the deep dive into the Mafia politics without the main male character actually being in the mafia world. While it can definitely be read as a standalone, it's a great lead up to the next book!

Cant stand a pick me ass mama. “Mamá rushes to a man’s defense, to literally no one’s surprise.” I dont like mark. Like why is it so hard to imagine someone is genuinely and who they say thwy are? Like him being mean to eleanna gives bitch. I dont like people who paint others w/ a broad stroke like ok just because shes born and raised in a mafia family doesnt mean shes apart of what happens and hed know that by simply asking her. Having one grown folks coversation w/ the woman and hes 35!!! What a loser! Emotionally unintelligent and very emotional like why is her being herself making you so pissy? Hes so fucking mean i could scream!?! Like eleanna pls baby! You deserve better stop trying to reach him and go where youre appreciated! I swear one more remark outta mark (lol🤭) and id smack the shit outta him. Aw hell naw not she dyed her hair red!!! GIRL FUCK HIM!!! Ugh! When he finally tells her the truth and is waiting to see her response to his question amd hes just hovering ugh that would piss me off so badly! Cuz why couldnt he be like that to begin with?!? Like asking to touch her and stuff like omg pls fuck off. Hes the epitome of “too little too late” i wish she didnt love him. But anyways i finished this book and it was pretty decent cant lie. I couldnt stand how mmc was towards eleanna. And i feel like she shouldve made him grovel for longer but i guess the heart wants what it wants idk ive never been in love frfr so what do i know🤷🏾‍♀️ absolutely loved eleanna! For her, my only notes would be “baby doll you are too sweet and too precious and you shouldve smacked him across the face at least one time. But other than that keep being you and never change.🫶🏾” i would definitely love to be her friend. Definitely give this book a looksy!

5 ⭐️ BUT…

This story absolutely kept me riveted and curious as to what was really going on and ultimately what the big picture will be. I really couldn’t put it down.

I really loved Eleanna. Here’s where my big BUT comes in…I very much dislike when the h is being treated like crap and thinks she’s “falling in love” with the H. Mark was a real jerk to her, and I understood (and admired) all her hard to get him to open up. She could have strong feelings for him; she could feel deeply for him. But for where they were in their relationship, how he was treating her, and the kind of person she was, I couldn’t buy in to her “falling in love” with him so early on. I have some other criticisms in the spoiler section below.

Despite my criticisms, I did really enjoy the story, and I look forward to the next book.

[criticisms with SPOILERS]
My other major criticism was that I just couldn’t believe she would be so quick to “side” with Mark against her family. She seemingly loved her parents and her family and had a good relationship with them. She *knew* her family were mobsters and criminals and she was fully prepared to marry a Made man. So I just couldn’t understand why she would agree so easily to go along with Mark’s plan. I get she was horrified over what happened to Mark, but what he asked of her was a big fricken deal. And he didn’t offer her a whole lot of proof. It left me scratching my head.

It was also confusing to begin with as to whether Mark was gunning to take over (which is what I initially thought) or wanting to take them down. But maybe that was by design? 🤷‍♀️

Tbh i was okay about this but only about 50 percent in and like 10 percent of the end but even before it wasn’t that good it was just readable i should’ve just not read this. the plot twist made me mad, and it wasn’t even good it was predictable. i also don’t really care for the writting style in most books but i really didn’t like his pov it didn’t sound good he was annoying asf lowk and i don’t know felt off

it was so slow too and then instantly he was in “love” yk.

both the mcs are annoying asf he’s a complete asshole. she is the one begging for his attention
I LOVEEEE when the mfc gives off a different vibe then in his pov he’s in love yk but this was just not it like he treated her like shit wtf he just like he couldn’t even be nice or try to be nice and even for one little decent thing that normal human beings do she thought he was being so sweet 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ who tf likes ts she needed to stand up fr she deserves so much better
she did so much for him she was so thoughtful i absolutely hate powerless fmcs

“You know how much shit I got for punching that Russian? I’m not supposed to know how to fight like that. And I wanted to kill him, Eleanna. To kill him.” He moves a hand to touch me, but stops himself. “I’ve never cared about anything in my life more than revenge. not until now”

like shut the fuck up i hated this shit

the spice was shit too like it was basically using her to get off and her being happy that he’s doing stuff because she wants a happy normal marriage

The ending was alright i guess it was really cute almost DNF but i was too in and was curious

This had me fighting for my life over whether to DNF it or not. Mark is one of the worst MMCs I have read in a while (without DNFing.) He was rancid. The way he talked to and treated Eleanna throughout 80% of this book is terrible. He knew from the moment he met her that she wasn't involved in her "family business" and she was a kind person. But he still punished her, basically, for existing.

Eleanna deserved so much better than the whiplash she was dealt and the amount of times that I screamed at her to give it up was embarrassing. Frankly, the first time when Mark pulled her aside to tell her that he hated her and she needed to give up whatever hopes of even having a conversation with him, I would have been done.

I am glad that I stuck it out to be honest. The groveling was pretty well done. Would it have worked on me in real life? No, but I would have murdered Mark long before he had the chance to apologize. The pacing is very done. There was tension, there was suspense. The Senator, book and character, both evoked intense emotions from me so mission accomplished. I did like Eleanna, despite her lack of a spine and her need to be caring towards a man who should have been shot.

This wasn't bad. I did enjoy reading this. I just really hate Mark.

4.5⭐️/2🌶️

Oh this was good. This had me hooked from the start and Mark White is a top tier book boyfriend.

Eleanna has really had one goal in her life, to be a wife to a main player of the familia and so when her time has finally come to be introduce to soon to be husband she was taken aback when it was….A senator. But she’s been groomed and trained, she didn’t let it show on her face. She smiled and was perfect.
And that’s exactly what Senator White thinks of Eleanna, she is perfect. Perfect for exactly what he needs to get completed with his partnership with her father and uncle.
Eleanna was prepared for a partnership with her new husband while Mark plans on to never be around her. He says it’s because he needs to focus on his work but really it’s because Eleanna can see right through him, to the real him.
Oh how I loved the banter, the inside jokes, the connection that Mark and Eleanna had, and especially when he finally lets himself indulge what he really wants.
The secrets and turns that we go through flowed great with the storyline and I can not wait for the next book in this series. I am hooked.
I received an ARC of this book.

This book had some wild moments in it, and sets up quite the series for the rest of the books. Mark was not the most likable character at first, at all, but then you kind of get to know what is driving him. There are so many times I wanted to shake him for how he was treating Ellie, as she definitely deserved more at many points throughout the book.

Ellie was a likable character, and at many points throughout this book, I genuinely just wanted to give her a hug. This book was most definitely a slow-burn at first, and you see Ellie breaking Mark's walls down bit by bit.

The plot twists were actually wild and I thought I predicted it, but I most definitely did not. I like books that have a conclusion, but this ended on a cliffhanger.

I enjoyed many of the side characters, and honestly I think I would continue the series. I think there were parts that I felt dragged at first, and did not like how Mark treated Ellie at all, but that was a part of the story.

This was a great first book by Lori Kent! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I love Mafia romances. I thoroughly enjoy a well-written one. And this author surpassed my expectations with this twisted romance. Lori Kent managed to weave a tale of betrayal, corruption, heartbreak, love, and romance with plenty of groveling and beautiful forgiveness as the secrets are slowly peeled away one at a time, perfectly timed and paced throughout this story. There were moments I wanted to slap Mark White while I pulled Eleanna into a tight hug and protect her form the hurt he planned for her. During their journey, she proved herself time and time again while Mark held himself back, but, just when you think it is too late and he has finally gotten his wish for his "wife" to settle for a divorce, he feels the errors of his ways and does a satisfying amount of groveling to get her back.

You will laugh, cry, get angry, and sigh with contentment when reading this beautiful tale. Well done, Lori Kent! I can't wait to read another of your stories!

If I can rate this higher than 5 stars, I would!

Lori Kent has a new fan! I was drawn in and on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. This has all of my must haves: great plot, romance, passion, alpha male and a happy ending. This Mafia romance being written in dual POV is another plus.

Eleanna is a mafia princess who has always dreamed of becoming a mafia wife and mother. Mark White is a Texas senator beloved by all with a thirst for more political power. While Mark chose Ellie, Ellie is shocked that Mark is the man chosen for her. You will enjoy the ride as we see Ellie challenge Mark’s demons to fight for the life she wants; and Mark realizes that maybe his perfect plan. Isn’t so perfect. The character and relationship development is at a great pace, it felt natural and believable. As the couple navigates their differences and secrets, you are introduced to the secondary characters as well. I loved how we were given glimpses of their personalities and dynamics to prepare us for what’s next. I can’t wait to continue the series.

Eleanna Delagdo has always known she wouldn't marry for love. Raised as a mafia princess, she was groomed to be a partner for a made man…until she is married off to Senator Mark White. Wait, what??

Mark White is a powerful senator who has a squeaky clean image. He is charismatic and charming…well, until he isn’t in public. Then he is cold and unhappy. He doesn’t want a wife or a partner. Ellie is strictly a business deal. As she starts to slowly break down Mark’s walls, secrets are revealed that put them both in danger.

I thought this was a really unique take on a mafia romance! There are so many great twists and turns in this story! Mark and Ellie had a rough start, but they had amazing chemistry from their first lunch together. Mark tried so hard to ignore his feelings for Ellie. She wouldn’t give up on him, even when it seemed like she should. No spoilers, but there are some family secrets that come out that are pretty shocking and it helps Ellie understand Mark better - like his coffee obsession.

Ellie’s sister Mia and BFF Luna are quite funny. I would say this book has some great humor and banter woven throughout the story.

It does end on a bit of a cliffhanger. I am definitely looking forward to Luna’s story next!!

I am not into Dark Mafia if I am perfectly honest but I do love myself some political romance and that's what drew me to this book. Interesting to say this wasn't a political romance book at all but it was what I consider probably one of the most intriguing reads of the year.

Although both Mark and Ellie are not what the other expected, somehow they start building up a true sense of team, despite the fact it was an arrange marriage and Mark doesn't want her near. Honestly I felt the build up quite stressed, as it's obvious one wants more and the other one doesn't. There were several times I wanted to punch Mark in the face and others, Ellie.

There's a plot twist that made the story even more intriguing and honestly, it was one I didn't see coming. However it tied the story quite nicely and it left you wondering what will happen next for these characters and the side ones.

I highly recommend this book.

I am so grateful that I received an ARC of this book, this review is based from the ARC as I read it.

The Senator by Lori Kent was a good read. The story follows Mark and Ellie through their arranged marriage, the story has a strong focus on family and found family.

This story has an amazing plot, however, I found the pacing to be off and kind of clunky when moving through the timeline, however, the characters are well-written in a way that their development throughout the story is clear and follows the storyline.

OMG, OMG, OMG…..I devoured this book. That saying, “just one more chapter?” Yeah, more than just one more chapter. I stayed up way too late work nights just to finish because I could, nor did not, want to put it down.

Mark (For the sake of the story, we’ll leave it at Mark) and Ellie are just adorable. Mark is a hard@ss, with just cause, and deems himself unworthy of the sweetheart that Ellie is. But Ellie refuses to back down and notices the little things that make-up Mark. In return, Mark’s walls start to crumble, piece by painstakingly little piece and he starts to show just how much he cares, when he shouldn’t.

They become the power couple that one wouldn’t think, and when they’re set to rule the world…watch out. I really could not put this book down. I wanted one more because Lori keeps you on the edge of your seat. And when you think you got it figured out, THINK AGAIN! Just…pick it up! It’s a fantastic read!

Elena is the daughter in a very big criminal family. She is considered a princess. She has been groomed to speak several languages, engage in small talk and be a big asset to her husband. Her chosen husband is not a made man as she had thought but a senator. The senator has chosen her out of all the other women in her family who are age appropriate. Elena dreams of a union where they will grow and love and rule together. You can imagine her shock when she realizes Mark the senator doesn’t want a real marriage with her. He wants a facsimile of a marriage. He wants to take her to functions and have her speak to the press but he has no interest in getting to know her. Elena is devastated by this knowledge but she refuses to let Mark determine what her marriage will be like. This was a wonderful first novel by Lori Kent. I enjoyed it immensely. It was a page turner with intrigue and mystery. I believe this book will be the first in a series of books I’m quite anxious to read.

3.7/5 - 🌶️ 1.5/5 - 🥴 0.5/5: The story was fine to get me out of a reading slump. Definitely enjoyable but not one of the best books I’ve ever read.

Themes: Maffia, politics, secret life, suspense, arranged marriage, millionaire

Synopsis: Elleana is a daughter of a maffia don and has been preparing her whole life for an arranged marriage to someone in the maffia. When she meets her betrothed, he’s not what she expected him to be. Mark’s a senator and America’s golden boy. He makes it clear to her he’s not looking for a partnership like Elleana was hoping. They get to know each other better throughout the marriage and Elleana discovers there’s more to him then there seems to be and they grow closer. But… once their relationship seems more then just arranged Mark has to blow up the marriage. That’s the day Elleana discovers he’s having a double life. He’s part of a secret organisation trying to attack the maffia syndicates. Ends on a cliffhanger, but HEA for the couple.

While reading this book it is a rollercoaster of emotions, twists and turns but I enjoyed the ride. I did enjoy the different POVs. The Senator is an arranged marriage, mafia, romance but I wish we got to see more of the mafia universe and Ellie's role.

Ellie was so sweet and even though Mark did not want her she kept her head up and was trying. I did not like Mark and then there were times I did. I honestly did not understand what he wanted with her and why he was so cold. But once the truth started to come out I did understand but was still leery about Mark. Mark asked Ellie for something really difficult and she was strong enough to do it. Once he showed her true feelings for Ellie, I did like him. I loved the banter, inside jokes and connection they had.

I loved the side characters and I am excited to read Luna’s story. I also am curious if we will get Mia’s story.

This is a bully romance that features an alpha-hole male lead. So if that is your jam you will like this story. The thriller aspect of the story is tense and well done but it starts in the second half of the story so you really need to love alpha-hole male leads since that's what you're getting for the first half of the book. The set up is great. An arranged marriage between a mafia princess and a US Senator is a match made in heaven. Eleanna is the perfect mix of domesticated well-trained "Stepford Wife" and willing to drop a verbal bomb that reminds you she's not entirely a doormat that was super fun to read. I just would have liked to see some of that great thriller action in the slow paced first half of the book and better chemistry between the characters.

mafia goodness

5/5 ⭐️ 2.5/5🌶️

Where are all of my mafia romance lovers at?! “The Senator” by Lori Kent will check all of your mafia loving boxes! Lori Kent seamlessly combined so many favorite mafia sub-tropes into this thrilling read, leaving me constantly on edge.

Mark and Eleanna (Ellie) are the two main characters, set up through an arranged marriage that benefits Ellie’s family and Mark’s “political agenda”, as the Senator. We all know politics can be corrupt, but just how corrupt in this book, may shock you (or not).

Mark & Ellie’s relationship is a rough ride, definitely not smooth sailing. Think about those North Sea Tik Tok videos and you’re on the right track. Ellie really wanted a partner and Mark… had other needs. Definitely check out this Mafia Romance debut by Lori Kent! You will love it!

Really fun book set in a mafia world but not an overly mafia story. The book centers around the arranged marriage between Ellianna and Mark. Ellianna has been trained her whole life to be a good wife for whomever she ends up been pawned off/ traded for/ bartered with for a good match so being matched with a stranger isn’t the end of her world. She sets out to be an amazing wife and win over her husband.
Mark has a lot of secrets and doesn’t open himself to anyone much less this new young wife of his.
This is a super slow burn but the action is fast paced. I really wanted to keep reading and find out what happened next!
This book also had a lot of the same vibes as Marriage For One but this one is darker and the characters have more trauma and baggage.
Quite a few swoony “my wife “ moments
