Where There's a Will

Rate this book
...There's A Way.

Connor and Will are at vastly different points in their lives.

At 32, Connor Stark’s life is pretty great. With a handsome boyfriend, a thriving business as an Events Coordinator, and a vibrant social life set against the stunning backdrop of Australia’s Gold Coast, he has very few complaints. Hell, he even has eye candy in the form of his uniformed silver fox upstairs neighbour, not that he’d ever do anything more than perv on the guy.

Then one day tragedy strikes, and Connor is thrust into single parenthood as he is handed a newborn baby and what feels like zero lifelines.

Meanwhile, at 49, perpetually single firefighter Will Bradford’s life is also pretty great. Though his hair might be more silver than brown these days, he has a rewarding job, amazing grown-up kids, and an adorable downstairs neighbour he probably shouldn’t be checking out as often as he does. So sue him; he’s only human.

When Connor’s life is turned upside down overnight, Will finds himself helping the younger man navigate his new reality. He has no intention of falling butt over teakettle for Connor or his kid, but somehow it happens anyway.

With Connor a broken man, and Will concerned about restarting the whole parenting gig from scratch, how can they make a relationship work, especially when life seems intent on throwing even more hurdles their way?

CW: Despite the bulk of the romance being tooth-rottingly sweet, this book does touch on some potentially triggering topics. These include: death of close family members (both through terminal illness and also sudden means), traffic accidents, fire trauma, homelessness, mild homophobia, and the stress/trauma of raising children, including sleep deprivation, self-doubt/anxiety, custody negotiations, and the fear of losing one’s child.

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes & tags down below.

This book deals with quite a few heavy subjects, but without it being crushingly depressing. Well, it wasn’t to me, anyway. It’s about two men finding their way to each other and making a life together through grief, a couple of bouts of insecurities related to their age difference, and external challenges.

I enjoyed reading a book where the age gap is acknowledged and discussed a bit. I read a ton of age gap, and mostly it’s not a thing that is brought up a whole lot. It didn’t take up too much plot, but I think I would’ve noticed it missing if the MCs didn’t talk about it. Raising an infant when you’re 50 isn’t straight forward, and I’m glad it was treated realistically. Well, I don’t know how realistic a ‘Will’ is, but a girl can dream lol. I’m pretty sure a silver fox firefighter is a universal wet dream, no matter your gender or sexual orientation lol. 🧑‍🚒

“Patting the space beside me, I look towards Connor. ‘Come cuddle?’”

Such an unassuming little sentence, but I think it’s my favorite.

Admittedly there is quite a lot that happens in this book over a large-ish amount of time, which led to a few bouts of telling us what had happened after a jump in time. I guess that’s unavoidable to certain degree, but there were a few events mentioned that I wish we were shown instead of told about.

I don’t know if this would be a spoiler or not for some, so I’m gonna treat it as one:

Overall I think this was a fresh take on some familiar tropes in a way I haven’t read a lot of before. I remember hearing the author talk about it in the early stages, and I was excited to read it already back then. I especially liked how Will’s adult kids were a part of the story, and that they were supportive.

Yeah, not for me. The dude that inherits a baby, is caring, cooks, waxes, is a bottom and organises events falls in love with a bear of a firefighter who's a top, hairy, protective and tender perfection. Stop it. Please. And then the drama with the biodad and the fire and ugh. I might be in Hater Mode ™️, it might be I just read it after the utter delight that The Prospects was. Do not listen to me. I'm sure you'll like it far more than I did. And O really really wanted to like it

I was loving this book. In fact, I thought I’d found a new must read author. Then the over the top and unnecessary drama with the biological father and I almost DNF. I would compare it to the break up at 80% that some authors use when they can’t seem to think of anything new.

I went ahead and rated this 4 stars because even with the drama can a really wonderful story. I loved Conner and Will. I also thought little Vicky was adorable. So if some unnecessary drama doesn’t bother you I recommend this book. I know I’m planning to read Jack’s story in the sequel.

MELODRAMAAAAAAAA Connor really could not catch a break this whole book. I really liked him. I struggled a lot with connecting to Will, I honestly don't think he was that well-written a character lmao, but even more than that, I think the core story of the book isn't the romance, it's the baby. Which like 100% valid, that SHOULD be the story, I'd feel way creepier about the whole thing if the sister death and baby adoption story was the backburner. But as much as the author tried to tie Will into it by giving him his own emotional connection and giving his POV some key content highlights with , this book was not about Will in any stretch and it really showed. I'm a little torn on how I would've wanted it to be different, because like Will's son Jack is one of the MCs of the second book. So like on the one hand, I'm glad there was such a focus on Connor's side of things because we're going to have more time to explore Will's family. But on the other, if that's the family line or that's the firehouse (depending on how it goes) that's going to be playing a large part in the series as a whole, or at least how it starts, it would've been nice to spend a little more time with them. This book also involved way too much telling instead of showing, when you have a book this short cover this spread out of a timeframe, it's always gonna be a bit of an issue. I know that's a funny add-on to the end of this, complaining that there wasn't enough content in an area I would've wanted it, and then complaining there was too much content overall, but there you go.

I only read this because book 2 was strongly recommended to me (read: my friend talked at me about it while she was reading it, and I found enough intriguing parts that I was like okay yes I believe I shall go on this journey with you) so we're def continuing.

- age gap
- single dad(s)

Within the span of twenty-four hours, Connor suffers a terrible tragedy, breaks up with his long time boyfriend, and finds himself the sole legal guardian of a newborn baby girl.

He finds help in the unlikeliest of places—his much older neighbor, Will. Having two children of his own, this ain’t his first rodeo, and Will offers to help Connor navigate parenthood.

As he spends more time getting to know Connor and helping take care of baby V, Will finds himself falling head over heels for the pair. Months fly by and they become a solid family unit, but all good things must come to and end (or do they?), and their happy bubble soon bursts.

Christ, I was not expecting this book to hit me in the feels the way that it did 😭 This was my first book by Anna Sparrows and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I loved this so much. Connor, Will, and baby V deserve the world 🥹

The good
+ Will's relationship with his sons
    + The domestic vibes
+ Connor and Will giving their all for Vicky
    + Lots of hurt/comfort
+ Their honesty in their communication

The neutral
o I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My review remains honest and unbiased
    o
    o I am very petty and I don't forgive easily. That's more of a me-problem than a book-problem

The bad
    - Both main characters were constantly thinking about having sex with each other, regardless of the baby in the room. I have no idea how parenting works or if that's normal, but it made me really uncomfortable to read about all their sexual fantasies while they were holding or watching a baby. Vicky had a fever and Connor was really freaking out, while simultaneously getting really turned on from seeing Will hold his sick daughter. That just didn't work for me
    - Connor, Connor's best friend, and Will's son had all studied law. And maybe they were all in the wrong field or they genuinely didn't know anyone in the right field, but it felt unrealistic how much they were fumbling with the whole custody thing.
    - Henry was a great best friend for most of the book, but he was also a bit of a coward.

Quotes
"Come on, get up. I'm not sitting my arse down on the floor next to you. We'll be civilised and have a breakdown on the couch."

"If you had Batman's funds, you wouldn't be working a normal job. You'd spend all your time in the gym."
"Wrong. I would buy my own sports team and put myself on every single one."

I really liked their families (including Will's sons) and their sweet relationship. But I'm a very petty person and I want revenge or proper apologies/groveling from characters who were in the wrong. I think the easy forgiveness (which is probably a way healthier way to live than holding a grudge) tampered my enjoyment. However, the book was very well-written and I would still recommend it if you're looking for a book with an unexpected new single dad and angst only external to the romantic relationship at the center of the story.

There’s a lot of hurt/comfort in Where There’s a Will, the first book in a new series from Anna Sparrows. Connor is overwhelmed when his sister dies and he is handed a newborn. Connor knew that this is what his sister wanted, but he never thought it would actually happen. Now, Connor is dealing with the grief of losing his sister, figuring out how to handle a newborn, and being alone after his boyfriend leaves. He knew Will casually from living in the same building and always thought he was hot and Will steps in to help Connor as he can’t just watch him struggle and also he is attracted to Connor. It’s a balancing act for sure, as Will doesn’t ever want to feel like he’s taking advantage of Connor, but Connor never feels that and looks forward to all of the time he gets to spend with Will.

I only read one or two books by this author so far, but these were well worth it. As I love firefighters, so I was really happy to get this story.

The same goes for this story. I loved how this book dealt with different topics, like death, age gap, and child raising ...all heavy topics, which are often glossed over.

But here, the heavy issues were not ignored but discussed and really dealt with. Which made the book not a real fun read, although we had that as well, but made it realistic and loveable.

Due to the length of time the book had to cover and the different issues it had to deal with, some things were just told instead of letting us experience it.

All in all, this was a very enjoyable read, and I definitely will read more books in this series.

Really good age gap romance.

This is my first read by this author and I’m really impressed. This book was really well written and I loved the storyline. While it dealt with some sensitive topics the book still managed to have a light feel, and I absolutely loved the relationship between Will and Con, especially when Will was in Daddy mode (not kinky).

The book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, but it definitely sets things up for the next book, I can’t wait to read about Will’s son Jack. So overall, I loved it, will definitely be trying more from this author.

4.5 stars. A really touching combination of a number of tropes, which felt very realistic. The mourning, the demands of a newborn baby, the healthy communication between the MCs were all excellent. I enjoyed the Australian terminology (as a former Aussie resident I'm always a fan). The age gap was also dealt with really well and the support from friends and family was lovely.

Very nice story, this was the first time I read a book by Anna Sparrows and I enjoyed her writing very much.
The blurb already says all so I'll add just a few consideration:
- Connor is a strong man: despite all the tears, all the insecurities, all the pain, in his heart he always knows what's the right path (he chose his child over Ant; when she was ill, he rushed to the person he knew could help him; after the first weeks of "alternating", he knows he has to create a serene environment for her) I'm not saying the child's name because, when Connor chooses it, it's a beautiful moment in the book and I don't want to spoil it
- Will is awesome: I love his relationship with his children and also how he stepped in to help Connor. I loved that he didn't hold back his feelings.
I loved how the author described all the angst and the internal turmoil that agitated both Connor and Will after B's appearance
- I also loved how the situation was resolved

Lastly, Jack surely stole the scene a few times: he's amazing and I hope he'll have a bi awakening in the following book, I have the same hope for Wes, since he doesn't seem so happy with his girlfriend (I beg the author to bring him back to live near Will and Jack!). Maybe one of them could find his true love in Toby? Fingers crossed.

Very recommended

Love & Support

I was hooked on this story very quick. Will & Connor go from friends to so much more in a short time and their story was a good mixture of sweet, entertaining and spicy along with a bit of angst. It all made for a good read and I can't wait for Jack's story next.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

From the beginning this book had me hooked.
Connor was thrown into the deep end when tragedy strikes but with the strength of himself, his friends and most importantly Will he gets by.
There are many ups and downs that the character’s experience but things work out in the end.
I’d recommend this book.

This was a deeply emotional book. Heed the content warnings if any of those topics might be upsetting to you. The emotional whirlwind sucked me along and kept me avidly turning the pages to see how Connor and Will were dealing with everything.

I loved how this book made the space for grief and confusion and loss as well as so much love. Although a lot happens in a compressed time period at the beginning, it felt really authentic to me, and I really believed that Connor was both messed up AND ready for Will. (I feel like if I read a summary of events, I’d be really worried about someone being taken advantage of or not being in a healthy place, but that’s not at all what it felt like while reading the book.)

Will and his family were so very great. I loved his relationship with Jack and Wes—and the fact that they are always supportive just like he is. Will and Connor click so well (I’m still laughing about Toby), and it’s so lovely seeing them come together and be exactly what the other person (and Vicky) needs. I appreciate that the concerns about the relationship are communication points instead of the cause of major angst and misunderstandings. Even the major cause of angst in the book isn’t between the main couple, makes a lot of sense (even if it’s frustrating and emotional), and has a reasonable resolution.

There’s tragedy, but there’s also so much happiness, and that was really beautiful to read. Can’t wait to see what happens with Jack!

Connor and Will's Story . . .

Connor Stark’s sister, Daisy, met him for dinner since he is the only family she has left and neither of them like to cook. But this time, she has news and is afraid to tell her brother she is pregnant and scared, and the baby’s father wants nothing to do with this situation. But Connor assures her he will be there for her always. Telling his partner, Ant, about the baby seemed to make him pull away a little more each day. He was horrified when Daisy named Connor the baby’s guardian if anything ever happened to her.

After a surprise baby shower that Connor organized, he packed his vehicle with the tons of gifts to transport all of it to Daisy’s place. Struggling with the biggest item, he hears an American-accented voice offering help. It was the neighbor upstairs, dressed partly in a firefighter’s uniform. The man is older but incredibly attractive. He picks up the heavy crib box as if it weighed nothing and carries it out. He guesses Connor and Daisy are siblings, simply by their snarky, teasing comments to each other, just like his own twins… and Connor had to hide his disappointment, not realizing the twins were grown-ups now. Daisy chuckles at her brother. When Will Bradford easily picks up the heavy box and puts it in the car by himself, Connor knows Daisy will be teasing him the whole way home!

Then one evening firefighter Will responds to a nasty car crash. He sees a baby’s car seat, fortunately empty, in the back of one vehicle as they rush forward with the “Jaws of Life” to get the victim out. He recognizes Daisy, 38 weeks pregnant, as the paramedics run toward them. Then Will sees another car pull over fast and Connor jumps out in tears, recognizing her car. Will’s son, Jack, also a firefighter, tells his dad to drive Connor to the hospital and he will tell the crew what happened. Connor has become a single parent to Daisy’s newborn baby. How will he ever cope with this? He has no idea how to be a dad. And it’s very clear that Ant has no intention of remaining with a baby moving in. Will’s sons are adults – he couldn’t possibly be willing to start over again, could he?

This story is so touching with the love and emotions among the characters as they go through their lives. It feels so real and genuine. Will Connor and Will respond to this sad situation with the love they have always given to family? They are remarkable and the reader cannot help but cheer for them to get a well-deserved HEA if they are willing to become family and join their lives together.

WHERE THERE'S A WILL is the first book in the Dads & Adages series, and it's definitely one I'll be reading more in. It is also the first book by this author I have read.

This deals with some heavy subjects, so please take note of the trigger warnings. For myself, I thought they were incredibly well handled, providing depth and detail to the story.

Con is thirty-two, with a sister, Daisy, who is twenty-two and pregnant when we first meet them. Con is in a relationship but the cracks are showing and you know it won't last. Will is his sexy silver fox fireman neighbour who lives upstairs. Tragedy strikes early on and Daisy is killed, leaving Con in charge of her newborn baby.

Considering the topics, I found this book to be fairly low-angst. If Con and Will have a problem, they talk it through. Of course, this doesn't work out in every situation, but it was nice to see it happen. What was also nice was the support system both Con and Will had, both together and separately. Having Will's adult sons in here in a supportive role, rather than antagonistic, made it a great read.

If I had anything negative to say, it would be that I was left wondering about Daisy's accident. Why did she get in the car? Was it to see Con? What happened? Small things, I know.

Full of real-life problems with no magic answers, I was completely involved with this story. Definitely recommended by me.

I really wanted to love this book, but it was just mediocre to me. The first few chapters were intense, and I felt every emotion Connor was going through, it was heartbreaking. But after those first few chapters, I lost the connection to Connor, and I never really connected with Will. I never felt the sparks or sizzle between them either. There was a real story here and I felt like it played out like it would in the real world, but I just didn't connect or feel anything towards Will or Connor. I liked the secondary characters, especially Will's sons, and I can't wait for Jack's book. It wasn't a bad book, it just fell flat for me.

I enjoyed this story where out of a tragedy and loss love came into both of these men's lives and turned them into a complete family full of love. On the way, there were twists, turns, joy and an ear infection. I loved the joy they had and the fact that Will just couldn't help but fall in love with Conor and his daughter. Lots of feelings and emotions in this story that were clearly described and sensitively told. Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

This is a sweet and lovely story about finding love after overcoming great loss and dealing with tragedy to create something new and wonderful.

Connor is a single man in his 30’s with a job he loves, a home he owns, a live-in boyfriend. He is looking forward to becoming an uncle to his sister's baby. So what if he keeps shooting glances at the silver fox firefighter who lives upstairs? Will is almost 50, an American firefighter living in Australia where he moved with his now grown twin sons years ago. He definitely takes notice of the cute guy who lives downstairs, but the guy has a live-in boyfriend. Nevertheless, they make casual conversation when they meet at the mailboxes or wherever. Then one tragic night their lives collide, and nothing is the same afterwards.

This book is a heart wrenching but ultimately life affirming book that will hit all your emotional buttons. Given the subject matter it is actually surprisingly low angst. The story arc moves well as does the character development. The secondary characters play important roles in propelling the narrative which is always a plus for me. Additionally, it appears this will be a series and some of the secondary characters look to be likely candidates for future books.

I read the book all in one sitting as I was invested in the characters and the story and didn’t want to put it down. Probably one of the best compliments one can give a book.

ARC received from GRR for an honest review.

Connor has become the guardian of his niece Vicky since the death of his younger sister. His relationship, that has been on it's last leg, has imploded. Through his grief he has a savior come to help. It just so happens that it's the sexy fireman who he passes in the hallways.

Will is the father of grown twins and a firefighter. He can't help but flirt with the man he passes in the hallways. When he's asked for help with Vicky, he doesn't stop to question it, he immediately helps out. His sons Wes and Jack are supportive of their dad helping out and when they find out that Connor and Will are dating, they're even more happy for their dad.

Through the foibles of raising a newborn Connor is happy to have the help of Will and the relationship is icing on the cake. When trouble comes knocking on their door will they pull together or will it pull them apart?

I liked that it started out slow and gradually picked up speed. I really liked the side characters that rallied around to help Connor and Will. Even the trouble that came knocking seemed like a realistic thing that can happen. I would've liked a little more excitement to the book. It had a little too much mundane everyday happenings IMO. Henry and Connor have a disagreement that while understandable it took too long to talk it out. Henry needed to pull up his big boy pants and come talk to Connor. It was a sweet story for a days read.

This is an emotionally gripping story with intense situations, and two intriguing men who become quickly connected during the upheval that occurs. There is a fair bit of angst within this book, but it is nicely balanced with the rallying of family and friends, and blossoming of a sweet love as Connor and Will traverse this journey together.
When disaster strikes, sweet, sassy Connor is about to learn who he can really rely on - and it isn't his snooty, uptight, soon to be ex, boyfriend who likes to passive aggressively critique him.
Kind hearted Will has been drawn to Connor - and vise versa - and enjoys their little bits of harmless flirting, even though Connor thinks Will is straight. When Connor is devastated and needs help, Will is ready and willing to do whatever he can.
Just as things seem to be getting into a routine, and these two amazing men have become deeply connected, another disaster hits and throws both Connor and Will into a tailspin. And if that isn't enough, they get a couple more intense events thrown at them.
Throughout all the turmoil, events big and small, Connor and Will have become deeply in love, and proven that together, they can weather any storm. Their relationship may have grown quickly, but it is so obviously genuine, full of passion, understanding, and love, that they truly deserve a wonderful HEA.
I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.

This is a fascinating tale of two fascinating individuals who form an instant bond amongst the turmoil of their lives. While there is some tension in the story, it is effectively countered by Connor and Will's strong support system and the development of their growing romance.
Connor, the lovely and cheeky guy who is going to break up with his pompous, uptight, ex-boyfriend who loves to passive aggressively criticize him, is about to find out who he can actually rely on.
Even though Connor is convinced Will is straight, the kind and gentle Will can't help but be attracted to him. Will is prepared to do all he can to aid Connor while he is in a time of need.
When Connor and Will have finally settled into a comfortable routine and become close to one another, another catastrophe strikes, sending them both reeling. And if that wasn't enough, they're hit with a couple more nail-biters.
Despite everything that has happened to them, both large and little, Connor and Will have grown closer and shown that they are stronger as a couple. Despite the rapidity of their courtship, there is no denying the authenticity, passion, understanding, and love that characterize their relationship. I absolutely loved this book and would definitely recommend it to others. I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

I couldn’t put this book down! Connor’s world is turned upside down when tragedy strikes and he finds himself responsible for his sister’s newborn. His boyfriend at the time is a complete jerk and he doesn’t hesitate to show him the curb. Will is Connor’s upstairs neighbor and a firefighter. He is an amazing support for Conner, from the scene of the tragedy to helping him cope once he gets home. Their lives quickly become entwined and even though Conner is newly single, and there is more than a decade age gap, they fit perfectly together. Will has twin sons that are grown and I loved their close relationship. They are accepting and supportive and just want their Dad to be happy. When a threat to their new family shows up, Connor and Will find strength in each other. I liked that the author resolved the issue in a way that benefited everyone. There is a character that has homophobic views, but in the end he does change his attitude and apologize. It doesn’t excuse the behavior, but does make things better going forward. I loved that while there are tragic and difficult things that happen in the story, it is outside of Connor and Will’s relationship. This really is an amazing story that captured my heart! It makes me want a Will in my life. It looks like Jack’s book is next. I’m not sure if it’s mm or mf. If it’s mm, I’ll be first in line to get a copy.

Will is a firefighter who is called to a scene of a deadly accident where his neighbor's sister is killed. Connor is beside himself. He has been named his niece's guardian in his sister's will. He has no experience with babies, but he feels as though she is his daughter. Will has experience with babies as he has two grown sons. Will helps Connor with Vicky and they become close. Then the biological father comes knocking. Will Connor keep Vicky? What will change with the father's arrival?

I enjoyed this story. I liked Will and Connor. I was glad Connor stood his ground with his current boyfriend and got rid of him to keep Vicky. I was glad Will was there to help Connor. I found it fun to listen to their thoughts about the other as they are both attracted but figure the other was not ready for something long term. I enjoyed Will's son, Jack, getting on his case and I liked that Jack and his brother Wes also enjoyed the baby. I loved the emotions when Vicky had to go to the biological father's. There was highs and lows felt, not just by Connor but also Will. He was as involved with Vicky as Connor was. It was beautiful to see.

This was such a good story, and these were great characters that I look forward to the next book in the series.
