Like his brothers, Madoc is a dragon born by blood magic. Unlike them, he has only once bitten a human in a near-hopeless quest to find his eternal mate. Watching that woman die nearly destroyed him.
Now he works to invent a watch that will rewind time. When he attends the Spectacle of Time in Paris, though, he finds a woman who shakes the foundation of his world and crumbles his ferocious control.
Ever since the black-haired man with the red crescent on his cheek ruined her family, Fina has hated him. When she runs into him in Paris, she is determined to show him just how much. Instead, overwhelmed by the desire to both kill him and bed him, her body betrays her and she melts in his arms.
Sparks fly, and-when his teeth sink into her skin-she ignites. But she can't run far and fast enough to avoid the burning truth. She is now part of Madoc's dangerous world...body, soul, and fire.
Warning: This novel contains explicit sex, time-shifting, distance-hopping, a super-hot dragon, and a woman who can take the heat.
This book is the sequel to Waterfall. I am not sure if I liked this book more, or less than the first. This book takes places several years after the first.
Instead of focusing on Jonathon and Celeste we have switched over to Madoc. In a lot of ways I like his character more. Except, like Jonathan, he is a bit irrational at the whole "found my mate and now she is MINE" mentality. This has now begun to grate on me as reason and common sense seem to flee when these Zir find their chosen mates. They do a terrible job trying to explain themselves yet somehow the women always just accept it.
Madoc's mate is the daughter of a clockmaker. Her name is Fina. So far in the series, she is my favorite character. Very strong-willed, with a strong sense of right from wrong and feisty to boot! She does not so easily accept Madoc. In fact, she hates his for the first half of the book!
Hudson's character (former Duke turned Blood-drinker) makes a reappearance. I do not like to trust him AT ALL. We also get more insight int Havanis and Carmen. For more info on these characters, please read the books. I really cannot divulge more about them without giving parts away. The other brothers are not even in this book at all except for a 1-2 page entry on Ilmir. Now THAT is a character I want to learn more about. He is a mysterious one he is.
Like the first one, I still do not get the dragon bit very well. This one covered the scales a bit more and since Madoc's element is fire is seems a bit more 'dragon-like'. But the biting, blood drinking and poison fangs just don't seem to fit with any idea I have about dragons. My other complaint with this story is that while I liked the characters more, and Ilmir has me quite intrigued to read the next volume, a few of the conversations a too jumpy. The character start talking about one thing, while the other character is talking about something else, and them one of them brings up yet a third topic. So it can be tiring to follow the dialogue at times.
Otherwise not a bad little story. While this is not a fantastic read, it has just enough to keep me going with the plot, wanting to know about the other brothers and what is going on with Hudson, Carmen and Havanis. Lacy Danes has created a unique enough world and the lives she shares are just interesting enough that you have to know how it all ends.
Madoc is a dragon born by blood magic. He longs to find his mate. But if he bites a woman that turns out not to be his mate she will die. Unfortunately this has happened to him once and he is determined to never let that happen again. Never giving up he is working on inventing a watch that will rewind time so he can set things straight. Fina is the daughter of a famous clock maker. She has met Madoc once before and it wasn’t a good meeting. She hates him and blames him for ruining her family and her fathers stroke. At the Spectacle of Time in Paris their paths cross again. She only wants revenge but she gets so much more when it turns out that she is Madoc’s mate. Unable to resist, Madoc doesn’t give her a choice and bites her. She is now part of his world and has to come to terms with loving him and working on controlling her new found powers. But there is a danger lurking that wants her because someone wants to ruin Madoc and his brothers. Lacy Dane has created a magical world. Who doesn’t want to be able to hop across distances, stop time around you and breath fire. I really, really liked the story and loved the characters.
Open Flames is a well written story about a dragon shifter, Madoc. He is trying to find a way to travel back in time when he stumbles across a young woman, Fina who in time, will change his life forever! I was drawn into this story by the dragon sifter aspect. I was quickly hooked and really enjoyed where the story line lead me. Fina is a very strong minded lady who is determined to hate Madoc for something she blames him for. She soon learns that the world is not as it seems and is thrown into a whole new world where she will find love and a new found love of life! I will be reading the rest of this series by Lacy Danes soon! Thank you Lacy for a great story! I look forward to learning more about the Zir family!
This is the second book in the Dragon's Fate series and it jumps forward a few years in the timeframe of the lives of the lives of the brothers, as they search for their mates. We no longer focus on Jordan and his newly found mate. We actually don't hear much about them, just the occasional showing of them in the actions/decisions of what is happening overall.
We find ourselves in the eyes of the brother of fire, Madoc. We learned a little about him in the first book, particularly that he wasn't keen to bite, especially after his first attempt, which lost him the love of his life.
Within the first pages of the book, we are thrust into the arms of a soon to be important character, well a fair few of them actually. We find out that Madoc and Hudson are in search of a specific set os pieces, some bought some commissioned, to create a clock. This would be a very special clock, indeed, and would help the plight of the brothers and gain Hudson what he has always wanted, the ability to go back in time and get the woman he loves.
It is with this premise, that we find ourselves in the clock shop of Fina's father, where a series of events take place that put the book into full throttle. We are taken on a short and swift journey as Madoc's life begins to change and unfold, as well as several others'.
I found that the book had a decent pace, but I did think it skipped over a few events too swiftly. It would have been nice to have some more time and detail to watch as people come to terms with the cards they've been dealt, similar to the level of detail we saw in the first book. I would have also loved to read a bit, in the beginning, to catch us up on what happened to Hudson and our two mates from the first book, as it felt like we just found them and then it's much later.
Overall, though, I enjoyed this book. I like the story and that the brothers are a rare, new hybrid of vampires and dragons. I do think it is a quick read, perfect for those who want a steamy, short fantasy read for commutes or the rare reading time at home.
So just a little while back, I read Waterfall, which was book one. I absolutely loved it. And so I needed to read this one ASAP, so I am so glad for blog tours with books I love! :) I’m also a little mad, and devastated, because I SO CALLED MADOC FIRST!!! It’s like the second sentence in my Waterfall review. LOL I loved Jordan and all, but I totally wanted Madoc…. *sigh* another Book Boyfriend stolen away…. But anywho, let’s talk seriously now :)
Madoc is the broody HAWT PIECE of a dragon. He needs to find his mate, but that doesn’t mean he’s gunna make it easy on anybody LOL I do feel bad for him, because he thought he found his mate once, and it wasn’t “the one” and she died, so he’s not so really trying hard, but he really needs to if he wants to keep living. He’s pretty brilliant too. He’s trying to invent a time travel machine, say a watch, that will let him fix all this curse and death business. And this is how he meets his mate :)
Fina is the clockmakers daughter. She totally hates Madoc. LOL you know, for a while. Madoc caused some trouble in the past and gave her a lot of hardships. And of course, Madoc goes about the mate thing all wrong, and turns all cave man. Poor girl.
There’s some excellent plot twists, especially when you learn about the curse, and how things work, and the bad guys in the background trying everything in their power to take these dragon brothers down. If you are about steamy romance, with HAWT dragon shifter, and strong females, you are in for so many goodies! I really enjoy this series and I’m so glad there’s more brothers! I suspect it’ll get even better from here!! :) YAY! 4.5 STEAMY ALPHA MALE PAWS!
Attention: This book is intended for an ADULT audience and does contain sexual material.
So, I read Waterfall, the first of the Dragon's Fate Novellas, a while back, and it was alright. I felt that because of the sexual content the plot was a bit overrun. I gave Open Flame a read, to see if the plot continued or if the plot had really become the ‘joining’ of the Dragons and their mates… and it has.
I did not mind the sexual content, as I knew to expect it and knew the portion of the book it may take up based on the last episode. I found the characters kind of one-dimensional but I am interested to see if/ where the story line goes. Do all the brothers find their loves? What is going on with the creepy guy and Carmen?.. I need to know! :/
In Open Flame, the second of the brothers believes he has found his eternal mate, which I guess is a good portion of the overall plot anyway. However in this story there is more of a focus on their bonding than the evil that surrounds the Dragons.
I have been intrigued by this series, as it has mystery, sexual tension, dragons, complicated tidbits which I hope are explained, but you can only accomplish so much when each installment is only about 150 pages in length.
If what you are looking for is a short slightly erotic read ...with dragons... than this may be for you.
Madoc (Zir) was obsessed with making a watch to turn back time. He met Zina on his quest. Zina did not have a good memory of Madoc. Will she ever forgive him? Could Zina survive the Zir mating bite?
I am glad that I put aside my doubts about reading a historical paranormal romance novel. I read it and overcame my doubts. I almost missed out. You'll just have to read the story to find out what happens next and the HEA. I highly recommend this author.
Open Flame gets 4.5 stars and a Top Pick! The book can be read standalone. Open Flame is the second book in the Dragon's Fate Series by Lacy Danes.
This was definitely an interesting tale. Dragons who time travel? New concept to me. The story was entertaining and fun, sometimes a little scary, but all good. I liked Fina very much. She's a fiesty, independent woman who learns that things are not always as they seem. Madoc is also an interesting character, but determined to have his mate with or without her consent. Total alpha male - loved it. This is a brand new world that Lacey has created, and I'm going to have to go back to read the first book to see what happened there.
I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Dragon shape shifter, Madoc, is on a quest to turn back time. In order for dragon shifters to find their mate, they need to bite them. If the person is not their mate, they die. Having had a lover once perish on him after piercing her, Madoc vowed never to bite another, unless he could turn back time to save her if she was not his intended.
Lacy Danes Open Flame is an original entertaining novel. Danes is a talented writer, making you feel you are in the era of the book. I recommend this quick read for lovers of paranormal and fantasy.
Not really my cup of tea. Again I couldn't really relate to the characters. I just don't think this author's writing style is for me. But since I've already purchased the next in the series, no doubt you'll see another review.
