My Chemical Romance AU “He thinks I have stigmata,” Frank said, because what the fucking hell, it couldn't get any worse. He might as well just lay it out.
“Oh, well,” said Brian into his hands. “Of course.”
"I really hate real person fanfiction," I say as I find myself reading this and adoring it to no end. I honestly generally can't stand RPF. It's usually written poorly and has a voyeuristic feel to it. Not this fic. It is so well-written that I have regained hope in fanfiction everywhere. Thank you, Bexless.
This is gonna be a re-read for years to come. It's just way too good and way too much fun.
Reread Jan 2020: It's still just as fun. This book is one of my favourite books I've ever read. Not favourite fanfics, favourite BOOKS. It's that good. The characters are so funny and charming and Frank's character is really on that dumb bitch juice, but I relate so hard.
Unholyverse is 100% my favorite MCR fic and one of my favorite fics of all time. This story is full of blood, sweat, and tears and I am endlessly appreciative of Bex for the amount of research and dedication she put into it. Unholyverse is a MUST on your rec list
This book is honestly amazing. It has brutally emotional moments, genuinely horrific ones, and just beautiful ones that you'll hold on to a while after reading. Honestly after reading the first part I had to take a break cause I saw "character death" tagged in part two and was like, NOPE. NOT READY FOR THAT YET. I think my favorite part of the whole book is that Gerard is so committed, not just to catholicism and to God, but to being a good person and having a positive impact on the world above all else, which is something I think the character and the person have in common (not the catholicism part in the person's case). While romance is a part of it, it's not the focus of the book at all, it's mostly a background plot... until the end, but the buildup is so well done, as are the horror moments, and as someone who studied Gothic literature, they were really intriguing and seriously well done. I could honestly rave about this book for a long time, I legitimately want a physical copy to put on my bookshelf and lend to non mcr fans and see what they think.
i detest the fact that it is a my chemical romance fanfiction but good lord it is good writing. i didn’t deserve to read this for free but i should also be entitled to financial compensation because i must live forever with the guilt that i enjoyed a my chemical romance fanfiction this much
I read this in one sitting from like ten pm to midnight. Yes it’s another mcr fanfic I really don’t give a gaf. Onto number 2 of the unholyverse series “staring through demons”. 2025 is the year of me owning that I regularly read fanfic I don’t care
Okay, listen. Twelve years ago, high school me was supposed to be studying for finals and saw a post about a bandfic on tumblr. Do I think real person fic should be written and shared? Probably not. Did teen me want to read something long to distract myself from attempting to study preclac? Absolutely. And so I read a novel length bandfic in one night and continued to read the next two books in this series.
The band is used here as a way to write about pre-formed characters; the Unholyverse MCR members look like the real band members from MCR and are described as having the same childhood backstories, but there’s no bands here. If this entire book were kept exactly the same but used different character names, it would all still work just as well, as there’s no actual references to the band or knowledge about them needed to read this.
This was simply written so completely and totally for me that I still love it. It’s got My Chemical Romance, Buffy mentions, and so much Catholic lore that I was forced to learn and never cared about nearly as much as I do here.
Rereading this as an adult, I figured I’d give up a few chapters in and roll my eyes at ever liking it, but this still hits. I read this in less than 48 hours and was genuinely fascinated by the plot the entire time. This body horror concept of waking up one day and suddenly having to deal with every physical torture Christ went through happening to your body is so insane but also genuinely terrifying. The torture is brutal and gory but never too much of the main focus, which is instead how this group of friends can find a way to keep one of their own alive while he’s going through the most painful and bizarre experience of his life.
I also liked that there’s not really romance in this. We get two characters pining for each other, and having a serious connection, but it never progresses past one single kiss. They’re able to emotionally connect and need each other to get out of this situation, but they don’t end up together and the lack of any sex keeps this from feeling as uncomfortable as tumblr posted bandfic would usually be.
TLDR: If you grew up Catholic and have watched Buffy, this is for you, whether you’re an MCR fan or not.
