I had put this book off for a good while, but I am so glad I read it! In the book, the character Jamie is so sweet! It starts when Ada Smith is a cripple, as her abusive, mean mother calls her. Ada wasn't allowed out of their apartment, and her mom hurt her physically and mentally. At the start of the war, all the children are told to evacuate, but Ada's mom tells her no one will want her. Which is really mean to Ada, so she goes anyway with her brother Jamie. Susan Smith lives where they are going, and she is forced to take them in. She has a pony, and Ada really wants to ride it. As the sweet story goes on, the war grows closer, but to find out more, you must read the book. It is really good!
Wow, this book is amazing! It is a detailed adventure cover to cover, and a true must-read for any historical fiction fan. It has perfection in the facts department, with accurate descriptions of the London Blitz, and the life of a crippled child in a dirty, worn, and money-tight London. I have read it so many times that the spine has to be taped from rips and peeling! Kimberly Bradley is my favorite author, and her books never fail to keep me engrossed in the story!
This is an incredible start to a wonderful duet series. I highly recommend it! Though, the second one is my favorite. The first one is incredibly incredible!!! The authors use of characterization imagery, and inner dialogue and conflict created a compelling story that draws readers in and portrays the complex dynamics involved in abuse, children, war, and finding a new home
I dont remember this well, but i read it when i was younger. I loved it so much, i wasnt a reader and hardly ever read but this book got me into the author (and i enjoyed the rest of the books she wrote). Its appropriate for a younger audience while also maintaining a depth and is still lovable to older audiences, i’d recommend it
My favorite book of all time!! inspirational, comforting, and ignites a passion in your heart to help the helpless. You truly fall head over heals for every character and become their biggest fans as they begin to grow and discover their value as a human being.
THE WAR THAT SAVED MY LIFE - 3.5/5 *Spoilers ahead!
About This book is about Ada, a girl who has a club foot and escaped from her abusive mother to English country side. She joined a group of kids that are evacuating due to World War II.
Overall When I first read this book, it was one with a really weird cover, I picked it up anyways. But actually, I have read the second book when I was in 6th grade (and obviously the story didn't really make sense, because I only read the second book). It was after I finished the book and start the second book that I realized.
Writing - Plot The plot is very well written. And it is writing about a perspective I have never seen in a historical fiction (though I don’t read a lot of historical fiction). The pace is a little slow, but is very interesting that it is from Ada’s perspective.
- Characters The characters are really interesting, especially Susan. Susan has been through a lot and she’s tired, but she takes on the role of being the kid’s (Ada and her brother’s) mom. Since a lot of books have either unrealistically mean or an unrealistically perfect mother figure. Which is really frustrating to read.
Recommendation I would recommend this book to people who like historical fictions, or books by Jennifer A. Nielsen. Though I would say Jennifer’s books are more based on the historical event and a bit more intense.
