It’s been a rough ten years for James, eight of which he spent being insane.

Now back in London with a stress-free job, he may not
be happy, but he feels relatively normal--until someone
he hasn't seen since before the event comes back into
his life just when London is in the grips of a serial killer.

This man he is still attracted to has his own secrets, and James
suspects one of them might be that he's the Beast of London.

Welcome to the Zoo.

Went by in a Blur

Having read and enjoyed the Paris Immortal series many years ago, I was delighted to find this new addition to the fold.
There is a tentative connection to the earlier books as Nicholas works for Michel the Parisien vampire, though Michel does not appear in this story.
The pacing of this book is relentless, there is literally never a dull moment, with an 'orrible murder around every corner. But it is the characters who make it special.
As in Paris Immortal the central character, James, is human but with psychic gifts. He has touch psychometry, the ability to pick up other people's memories from handling an object. He also has a shedload of trauma relating to an incident many years ago which burned out his ability as a medium.
Back then, Nicholas was the closest he had to a friend. But then he disappeared and James has spent years in hospital and feared that he is crazy.
Now Nicholas is back and James, after a shaky start is determined to keep it that way.
These two are an often impish crime-fighting duo but they are investigating each other as much as The Beast of London, with much to learn.
I enjoyed their exchanges and relative fearlessness even as bloody killings seem to dog James' every step.
The denouement seems to hint at more to this story though and I look forward to finding out what that is.

I'm not usually a Lycan fan. I think Larrell K Hamilton novels pushed me to point where I found it all too much. So, not expecting to like this despite it being written by an author whose books I adore. I found myself loving every minute, James hit a nerve, a strange guy, trapped within himself because he believed he was crazy. He'd had some awful things to deal with, notwithstanding physically being abused. His gift, hidden away behind prescribed drugs.
Nicolas comes back into his life, and slowly convinces him he isn't crazy. Nicolas is a hybrid lycan, part vampire. I couldn't get enough of their love story. They make just as beautiful couple as Michael and Gabriel in Paris Immortal. All I know is I want more. Ms Roit's writing style is beautiful and her descriptions are detailed and well researched where they need to be. I hope that there are indeed more tales to come, and more interweaving of past characters and stories from her previous stories.

100/10 beans. Only improvement could've been random spelling error, typos etc and the fact it was too short :((

FYI spoilers:

10 years and Nicholas couldn't ring, text, send a letter??!
NGL I feel genuine anger towards him, who says to their friend/ lover, that they noticed they feel uncomfortable and exposed like yeah why not make him feel comfortable , who tf points it out !!?!

I feel like james is rather interesting in the way he speaks in the start he's very closed off and traumatised, I loved how you can clearly see his personality develop, he has this charm of direct honesty without the anger, something valuable, but think I would've been too petty to continue conversing with Nic. And how he leaves poor James to his insanity for ten years, oh how I would've lost it, so much that he'd have feared losing an eye for that, jk but also not, still mad at him....

But Sherry I must say you seriously have written insanity so well, coming from someone who's seen mental health personal and not, it was very accurate, and the fear of the supernatural being real but the rawness of it being so terribly insane to claim such.... 10/10 writing tbh.

Love love love ❣️❣️❣️❣️
( Finished in two days and honestly glad it's the first book at least I know that means there's more)
