The Silver Envelope

Rate this book
“Tell me again to release you, Granger.
Tell me again that you just want to be friends.”

It’s been five years since Draco last spoke to Granger. Things are different now, and though earning her trust will be a challenge, he can’t seem to keep himself away.
Hermione has been busy advocating for elves around the world, but when her breakup with Ron turns her life upside-down, she knows there’s only one person who can help her.

Alternating POVs between Hermione and Draco. Slow burn, eventual smut, light dom/sub. Diverges from canon after Voldemort's defeat.

I never would have predicted that in my 30’s I’d become a Dramoine fanfic girlie, but Manacled changed me forever and here I am. Thank you to the girl on Fable who recommended The Silver Envelope to me 🖤🖤🖤

DNF at 40%

This is a fiction with a fast pace, but sadly it meant that the story lost in quality. It just feels like a string of events that happen, without any transition or “in-between” moments. Because the story only focuses on the events, the characters and relationships seriously lack depth. Some things don’t really make sense either, like the fact that Hermione is receiving a ton of hate mail because of an article that was printed, but she receives the mail over a week later…

The ideas were good, but the way everything kept happening felt disjointed, and it made it hard to appreciate this story as a whole.

Overall, Hermione and Draco felt out of character too. Draco was teasing Hermione and giggling at his jokes after meeting with her only two times, while Hermione is insecure every time she has a fight with Ron, and she rushes through things with Draco, seemingly without a care in the world, only to question everything the day after. They still haven't done anything serious at the 20% mark, but she talks about that feeling inside her chest, and how she keeps thinking about him, which would be cute if they’d been friends for a while. Considering that they only had a few interactions, it feels rushed and superficial. That being said, the sexual tension between them building between the 20% and 40% mark was relatively well done, even though it was pretty contradictory with Hermione’s statement that she was not ready for another relationship and that she only wanted to be friends.

Hermione’s characterization also annoyed me. She gets upset for the tiniest thing Draco says or does, probably to add angst to the story, but it just makes her look like an impulsive and immature character, which, again, is very out of character. She also realizes that Ron treats her like shit and she tells herself that she needs to stop excusing his behavior, but she still excuses his behavior 10 chapters later. Sure, she gets angry at him, but she always ends up caving and listening to his bullshit apologies and putting up with him for the sake of their friends.

Sadly, the relationship between Hermione and Draco felt a little too much like insta-friendship and insta-love for me to appreciate it. They meet by chance on an evening and have a drink together so Malfoy can finally apologize to her. During his next appointment with the mind healer, when he mentions this, she point blank asks him if he is in love with her, which makes him realize how attracted he is to her. The second time they spend time together, Hermione gets angry at Draco because she learns that he is the anonymous benefactor who’s been sending money to her cause and she says that he’s been using her to hurt Ron.

She had just ended a long-term relationship with one of her oldest friends, but that hadn’t bothered her half as much as Draco’s betrayal.

*eye roll*
Calm down, woman.
She is super pissed at him because she feels betrayed, even though they only shared a drink and a dinner together. I mean, it’s not as if they were best friends already. There is also the fact that she calls him of all people to talk about her breakup, but at that time in the story, they only met once by accident and shared a drink while Draco apologized. That’s it. And he’s the one she needs when she ends her 9 years relationship? Where did that come from?!

DNF’d 41%

Didn’t like the characteristiaztion of Hermione as this book went on. She came off strong at first but Ron’s anger was too much, how everyone seemed to excuse who he was, how she had to always rise to the occasion for the better on everything letting him off the hook was just ridiculous by the time I decided to DNF.

Just after Harry and Ginny get married, and the scheme planned to “protect” Hermione from a vindictive reporter and some other unknown threats, I was like F this. I’m tired of reading fics where Hermione gets shit on by Ron to this degree and very few seem to come to her aid. Ginny is the only one try into help her of her core group of friends and Harry is just being a blind idiot at this point. Ron is so manipulative in this one that I can not read one more thought on him.

This sucks because the build up of the sexual tension with Hermione and Draco was so well done. Now she’s just pushing him away at this point and I’m just out. He doesn’t need this bullshit.

4 ⭐️ Best 2023 Dramione I've read!
Words: 192,648 Chapters: 70/70

I'm so impressed with this fic. I came into it expecting nothing, and I'm so glad I did.

This is Post Battle of Hogwarts, around 6-7 years later I'd say, and it starts with Hermoine and Ron having been in a relationship for years now. Not my favourite trope, but there's that. It's a pretty abusive relationship, and after a little while Hermione finally finds the courage to drop Ron's sorry a** and move on.
I love explosive Dramione fanfics, but this was a SLOOOOOOOW BURN. Like, so, so slow it felt a tad too much at times. There were moments where they seemed to be taking a very clear step forward in their relationship, only for Hermoine to immediately shut it down, go into a regret spiral and cool things off with Draco. There were multiple times in here where she would just stop talking to him for weeks, and it felt awful! I didn't like that at all, and it felt like she was toying with him when he was nothing but honest with her (well, you know, in his Draco way). But then again in this fic, Draco's been secretly in love/crushing on Hermione for years so... I guess everything was new to her when he felt a lot more sure of his feelings.

This was a really nice, long fic -which I've missed reading. I feel like all good Dramione goodies are either on Hiatus or WIP rn.

There were 2.5 explicit scenes, which is not much considering this book's length. And yes, I consider that one just a half because there's no... ending... iykyk.

I didn’t love this the way I wanted to because I kept smacking my forehead like “really! Why?!” over the OOC, the directions and some of the too forced bit of plot manipulation. It was rather frustrating honestly. And too insta-lovey for me.

⚠️ But.

There were some gems along the way… 🥺

📖 I particularly loved the story within a story delivered via that essay Draco wrote.

I loved the elves’ involvement, looking at you Tillo!

💭And I did eventually fully recognize and understand the OOC where Hermione was concerned because well, for a while there I didn’t exactly act like myself either.

One thing I think this author does quite well is pin point the little things and force your attention to them, at least mine, and I’d find myself smiling just because. But also, possessiveness 🌚

Designing special wards specifically to keep one Ron Weasley - just him, from being able to come within a mile of your building is petty, petty work Draco 😅

- Oh and Harry & Ginny’s wedding?! I wanted to fall through the pages and land just right there.

So yea, I did enjoy a good bit of the story so long as I ignored everything else.

When it finally came, the smut smutted 💦
Draco’s raunchy mouth raunched,
And my pulse skittered.

And I hoarded the little treasures I found because that’s my favorite part about reading dramione…

📌

How was he supposed to give Hermione room to heal and think and breathe when he wanted all the air in her lungs?

His grip on her thighs had become punishing. 🫦

2.5! Not a disappointment per say, but also not my fav. This was, overall, fun and entertaining. I wanted to read something with house-elves, and this was a fun mystery. I’d rate it higher but the story leaned into making side characters stupider than they needed to be to highlight the main characters lack of brilliance.

Not a ton of spice but when there was it was 🌶️🌶️🌶️ spicy 😁.

The romance was a bit insta-love. Draco didn’t have much concrete reason to already be in love. And Hermione accepted his apologies so immediately. (Especially as the author altered the original lore to include Draco torturing Hermione along with his aunt—not perfectly clear if this was just nightmares or reliving past)

Draco was great, Ron wasn’t really Ron, but made a great stand in for the themes of living in an abusive relationship that isn’t just about physical abuse. Hermione got on my nerves a bit—but was probably in character with someone who had trust issues.

I just didn’t like how she respected everyone’s boundaries except Draco’s. And Draco seemed to be the only one she would jump to the worst case scenario with— despite her claiming to believe he really had changed.

And it bothered me a bit that Draco let her. That he weighed his past mistakes heavier than any mistakes Hermione could make against him. (Which didn’t seem great as relationship goals go). Is forgiveness real if mistakes still get thrown in your face at the first sign of difficulty?

Dnf at 78% but I’m counting this toward my reading challenge since I read 680 pages or it and got close to the end. I wanted to push to the end since I was so close but just couldn’t make myself.

—————————

***Disclaimer that I will ALWAYS respect any fanfic author despite if I have negative reviews or rant about something. They put out their hard work—that they pour their love and energy into— for free and I’ll always have admiration and respect for that, despite whatever my opinions on the fic may be. The only reason I post reviews on fics at all is so that I can personally look back to see what I thought of a story in case I forgot or in case I’m considering a reread. I don’t think fics should be rated like published books are (which is why I’d prefer my reviews of fics aren’t read at all) and only write these for personal future reference and to help me remember. If Goodreads had an option to make reviews private, I would. I’m also very critical and easily annoyed so my opinions are probably exaggerated and should be taken with a grain of salt. Just because I might not like something doesn’t mean others won’t love it***

—————————

I absolutely hated Hermione in this. She was stupid, impulsive, and immature. Draco just kept taking it no matter how shitty she was to him, and she never groveled (or sometimes even apologized) for it. And he wouldn’t even get rightfully angry about it, he’d just let it go.

She constantly kept excusing Ron’s actions no matter how horrible he was, but she always immediately assumes the worst of Draco and runs off or yells at him before even talking to him. I feel like he had to walk on eggshells around Hermione because she would get mad at every little mistake, meanwhile keep defending her ex boyfriend who was awful to her.

Draco was pathetic.

Also romance was rushed and was super insta-love. So many tags were saying it’s a slow burn but, there was absolutely no slow burn. At all. The tags straight up lied.

DNF almost immediately. It gave me insta-love vibes which I'm not a fan of reading; plus I'm also not a fan of reading fics where Ron is characterized as the worst villain boyfriend ever, Hermione is purposely stupid, and Draco is the perfect man who makes her realize that “no one has ever really loved her” just lazy writing to justify Draco; all this I could see in 3 chapters and I have no interest in wasting my time reading an immature Hermione who doesn't know what to do with her love life and a Draco who is the savior.

This was a good fanfic! It was fun to read with a decently thought out plot. This was not my favorite version of Hermione or Draco though. I personally enjoy more of an enemies to lovers and that’s not technically what this was. Harry was also not a favorite in this story but Ginny was fun!

Ron bashing at its best, but he was HORRIBLE in this fic. I do think she wrote it well though with her explanations.

It’s a slow burn for those wondering.

I realized in this fic... I'm not a fan of #RonBashing

annotations:

-"And apparently all I need to spill my guts is a glass of plain water. The department should probably fire me. Clearly, I can't keep a secret to save my life," he joked.

-He continued to hold her hand while she reacted to the sound of her given name on his lips, their mutual parting gift of friendship.

-She had come to learn that the easiest way to relive his anger with her was to distract him with a compliment, but it made her feel manipulative.

-But she wants you to come for Christmas dinner. She says she won't take no for an answer, but I will.

-Draco decided he would let her have this piece of feigned control. It could be his Christmas gift for her, the illusion of friendship between them.

-I'm handing you the reins, Hermione. That's what he had said.
Hermione appreciated his deference, but honestly, she wasn't sure she wanted the reins. It was beginning to feel like a lot of responsibility.

-That way, she wouldn't have to take that first, impossibly gigantic step all on her own.

-"Don't tell me to just let her go, Harry," Ron ground out. "You said it. She's family. I can't just stop caring about her. Even if she wants me to."

-"Now, do either of you need a pepper-up potion or a cheering charm? Because you look bloody miserable."

I don’t rate fanfics if I don’t like or don’t finish them. This one is dnf after it is revealed Hermione apparently thinks it’s a great idea to have mixed sex dorms in a boarding school. I don’t need the author’s political ideas on a controversial subject shoved down my throat in the midst of what is supposed to be a fluffy smutty romance. Didn’t like the fix enough otherwise to ignore. Hermione is all hot and cold and their obsession with each other so quickly makes no sense, particularly when Hermione just ended a long term relationship. She is insecure, dithery, short-tempered and illogical and very far from the Hermione I know and love. Draco’s sexual innuendo in the congress library (also, really, so many beautiful libraries in Europe, DLM would absolutely take her to the Richelieu library in Paris or Admont Abbey in Austria or El Escorial in Spain instead) came absolutely out of nowhere. His desire to be whatever she wants him to be for her is cute but (1) he doesn’t actually stick to it and (2) I prefer a bit more assertiveness, tbh.

Tenhle rok pro mě bude očividně plný dramione fanfikci and I love that for me.

Overall, I did really enjoy this story! The mystery definitely took the forefront, with romance taking a bit of a backseat (yet still prominent enough to stay in the romance category).

I really enjoyed the mystery plot, it was very engaging and had me guessing the whole way through. It wasn’t predictable either, which is a huge win!

My personal dislikes were that there was a bit more Ron bashing than I personally like, and Draco was a little too soft for me. I’d you’re looking for Ron bashing and soft Draco, though, I think you will love this!

Overall, a very well written story! I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it probably won’t be one I reread often.

TW: there are discussions and scenes of emotionally abusive/toxic behavior, but not from the mmc, and nothing graphic

I appreciate the effort in trying to make it a high stakes story and lore creation in regards to elves, as that’s certainly much more of an endeavour outside of focusing on a love story between Draco and Hermione.

That said, this is one of the more shakier characterizations of BOTH Draco and Hermione. I thought it felt a bit too self-insert’y and that was confirmed by some of the chapter notes. The pace for Draco’s feelings felt out of place, and Hermione’s situation and handling of her unknowingly participating in an abusive relationship with Ron was.. eh.

As a Dramione fic it’s not going to hit my top list but as a general fan fiction I think it’s solidly written and had some fun references i.e. Manacled.

OMG THAT WAS GOOD

A lAMAZONG top tier Dramione
Was it no one talking about it enough ??
Why I have not read it before (I am 10min the into dramione rabbit hole 🕳️ and over 50 fanfic read over 50k words)
The abuse is better in that book than in come finds me. A bit more realistic for the characters
The smut was good
The back and forth between Draco and Hermione was great. The mental health work from Draco very good as well.
I laughed quite a lot for the Slytherin trio, have not done that in a lot of time
The book was so nicely written and the plot just kept me going like a nice course at a restaurant
I loved it

reads kinda like a YA at the start of this, we're missing a lot of detail and scene building i'd like to read to understand the depth of Hermione's thoughts, actions, ambitions, so on. Same for Draco. Plot is generally strong and I didn't find that I was bored at any point.

Will say this went zero to one hundred when we finally got there, so some of the tension fizzled for me. The way this was written up until the 60% mark was filled with great 'almost' moments and forced proximity but once we landed the plane, we landed hard. Thankfully the B-plot continued to build and give a reason for us to continue on.

Ron is totally ridiculous in this one. Love/hate it, bc i'm pro Ron bashing.
