When I first picked this up, I assumed it was a history but it had more of a narrative tone, like that of a novel, but relied heavily on scripture. I took my time reading it but not because it was boring. On the contrary, it was more a meditative read for me as Walsh gives you a real and visceral experience, as if walking in the fisherman's shoes yourself. Although Christ is still some what mysterious as He is in scripture, it is the transformation of Peter which gives the narration its momentum. I should say, Christ is not mysterious. He spoke in parables before He spoke plainly to them about the kingdom of God. What I think most of us find mysterious about Christ is that He was always Himself. His truth, His love and sorrow where all with Him at all times and he did not change. The apostles saw His anger, they saw His sorrow and His mercy, but the author chose to not describe anymore than scriptures did themselves. And I am sure it was just as hard for those who met Him face to face to describe the Son of God. All they knew was the transformation that had happened within them.

There are lots of histories of Saint Paul the Apostle but not much about the man who was tasked with ruling the early Church. That Apostle to the Gentiles will be unforgettably met however in this inspiring book. Walsh marvelously blends the historic novel style and it's factual conjecturing with the outright history textbook for a very enlightening and entertaining book of Saint Peter the Apostle. I came away with a more insightful take on the Gospels. This novel is a page turner, I couldn't wait to see and hear what the Apostle's next adventure and lessons with Son of God was going to be. Walsh fleshes out the Sea of Galilee and it's fisherman as only an historian can do, the villages, peoples, and events become wind blown and aromatic with the word craft of a good story teller. The Gospel events become very present and tangible through the experiences and reflections of Saint Peter. I highly recommend this book.

William Walsh is an excellent writer. This is a must read book if you want to learn more about Peter the Apostle. William takes some creative license with Peter to bring out his character traits that made him such an able leader of the early church. There is a lot of good information in this book and it is written like a novel but is historically accurate.

This was such a great book. It took me through the life of Peter as if I were there. The writing was excellent, but even better, it made me know Peter, his struggles, his triumphs. One of the best books I've read this year.
