I always liked the high fantasy futuristic novels.
This novel's story takes place in the year 3000. The world is full of terrorism and politically unrest.

Our hero discovers that he has supernatural abilities...
He was a normal boy until then. One day he suddenly finds out that he has superhuman ability.

What follows is the thrilling journey of a superhero into the world full of problems .

Very nice read

V.S Hall has some impressive world building and for as long as the book is it doesn’t feel like too much. I thought Hall’s writing was spectacular and each scene played itself out well. I really appreciated how the main characters most prominent feature was how angry he is - as is common with this genre. Vin (main character) felt like a human with complex emotions but he wasn’t just all die, die, people who killed my parents!

While some of the relationships felt awkward and definitely advanced way too quickly to be realistic, I enjoyed all of the side characters and appreciated their unique qualities.

I don’t usually enjoy science fiction, especially ones set in the future but I’ll have to make an exception for Alpha Squad. Excellent work.

Lunar Naturals: Alpha Squad is definitely inspired by anime with its characters with wide ranging abilities, multiple action plots, and themes of young people rebelling against a tyrannical system.

Vin Sylo is a refugee from Earth and has pyrokinesis. After a fight in which his powers are revealed, Vin is recruited by Roy, the leader of Lunar, an organization inside a space colony dedicated to ensuring peace despite the violent terrorist factions and dictatorial governments that exist. Vin meets his future compatriots: Lae, who is an expert markswoman, Kyo, who can control darkness, and Kaz, who has extra fast reflexes and movement.

Fans of manga and anime will especially love this book which is a love letter to the Japanese born art form. Many of the situations, characters, and plot points aren't too dissimilar from works like Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, The Gundam franchise, Dragonball, Get Backers, and Naruto. It is flashy, exciting, deep, and filled with tension and drama just like its film, television, and literary predecessors.

Vin is the archetypal lead in such works. He is a young hot head who had to get by his wits. Since he's been independent for so long, he isn't used to working with a team. Recognizing other's strengths, weaknesses, and his role within a group setting are the first tests that he must pass.

Most of the book is spent on Vin’s training which involves strategy and combat techniques. He learns to harness and increase his powers. He also learns when to attack, when to defend, and when to retreat.

One of the best fighting chapters details a match between Vin and Kyo when both of their dark natures are unleashed. Watching the release of Kyo’s alternate demonic personality unnerves Vin but also pushes him to release the physical and psychological toll that his friend had been suppressing. He empathizes with his friend's plight and also recognizes the parallels between Kyo and himself with his own unchecked powers.

He has a similar situation with Lae when he is sent on assignment with the rest of his crew, Alpha Squad. At first he minimized Lae’s contribution and abilities while at the same time becoming attracted to her. When she takes their enemies down, he recognizes the full extent of her abilities and that she in many ways is Vin’s equal even superior in leadership and is able to even out some of the rougher edges of Vin’s personality as he does for her.

Anime fans in particular will love Lunar Naturals: Alpha Squad. But anyone looking for a good Science Fiction novel that explores young people discovering their own power against oppression will also enjoy it too.

--------------------------------------

This is the story of Vin Sylo, a normal young man who sees his life changed when a terrorist attack destroys his family and home, causing his latent powers to become stronger and able to develop them. Set in the year 3008, the protagonist joins the Lunar organization. who maintains peace between Earth and the space colonies where he will train and join the mission to defeat the terrorist leader.

In this story the author immerses us in a science fiction story full of action and one of the best points of the book is the fights and action scenes because the descriptions are very good, making the reader fully immerse themselves in the story.

The entire world that the author creates is incredible and fantastic and he manages to convey this throughout the story. In addition, the superhuman abilities that he brings us are quite striking and the touch of romance is light and well interwoven with the main story. The only detail is that Sometimes it feels a bit rushed, however it doesn't affect the story so it can be enjoyed without a problem.

In general, an entertaining, agile story with a fairly good development that reads quickly and easily, perfect for science fiction fans.

Alpha Squad is set in the year 3008, a time when humanity faces political unrest and the threat of terrorism. The protagonist, Vin Sylo, finds his life upended after a terrorist attack destroys his home and family. Amidst the chaos, Vin discovers his latent superhuman abilities. He is approached by the Lunar organization, which is dedicated to maintaining peace between Earth and the newly developed Space Colonies. Vin joins the Lunar’s elite force, The Alpha Squad, and embarks on a mission to take down the terrorist group, Fang, led by the enigmatic figure known as The Wolf. The novel chronicles Vin’s journey from a regular boy to a key player in a high-stakes battle, filled with advanced technology, strategic confrontations, and intense action sequences.

Alpha Squad shines in its ability to create a vivid and engaging futuristic world. The plot, brimming with action and suspense, keeps the reader engaged through strategic confrontations and the hero's personal growth. The blend of superhuman abilities with advanced technology is intriguing and well-executed, particularly in the thrilling fight scenes and high-tech training sequences.

However, the book does have its shortcomings. The initial chapters, heavy with background information, could have been more seamlessly integrated into the storyline. This slower start may initially deter some readers, but the pace picks up significantly once the main action begins.

Character development is generally strong, but some relationships feel hastily formed. While this quick bonding is common in the genre, a more gradual development could have added depth. On the positive side, the romantic elements are handled with appropriate subtlety and do not overshadow the main narrative.

Stylistically, the book aligns with the conventions of light novels, making it particularly appealing to fans of anime and manga. This realization enhances the reading experience, as the vivid descriptions and dynamic action scenes easily translate into the visual style of these mediums.

Despite its flaws, Alpha Squad has great potential. The world-building is rich, and the storyline is compelling enough to leave readers eager for a sequel. For fans of young adult sci-fi and fantasy, especially those who enjoy action-oriented narratives with a touch of futuristic technology and superhuman abilities, Alpha Squad is a worthwhile read.

Thanks to the author, and to Booktaster for providing me with a free copy of this book for review.

Alpha Squad has all the potential makings to become the first episode of a very intriguing, modern YA sci-fi series. The fleshed out, varied powers that each Natural has– that feel more akin to something you see in fantasy but is instead well grounded in science– are a concept that I feel worked really well for the story; however, I do unfortunately think that this book does fall short in many aspects, which keeps it from being as strong as I think it could possibly be.

Starting with positives: By far the strongest aspect of Alpha Squad are the detailed, enthralling action scenes. I specifically like how V.S Hall writes their action scenes. Just as how time slows down when the Naturals enter Blink Speed, so too does the scene itself enter slow-motion, allowing the reader to fully appreciate the strength and extent of the power of all the characters. Similarly, the only time we see an action scene from the perspective of a non-Natural the action is impossibly fast as the character is unable to follow everything. Overall, the fact that the action scenes are so detailed, layered and diverse (not to mention very frequent) saves my final rating from being even lower.

Now, unfortunately, to what I felt were the negatives: I was thoroughly unconvinced by most of the emotional core of the novel. Vin’s motivations, though very clear (and some might say understandable) never seem to be properly challenged. Any emotional inner conflict is resolved very quickly, and seems to have no lasting consequences to the story as a whole– at least, not in this first chapter. I also personally did not like the dialogue. I do think Hall was trying to keep the dialogue witty and light-hearted. They don’t exactly fail at that, it’s just that I sometimes felt it was very forced, and, furthermore, I also felt that the nature of the dialogue also took away from the overall rather serious tone of the plot (this is absolutely just personal preference though).

If you’re a fan of action-packed, somewhat light-hearted YA novels I would still recommend Alpha Squad to you. I do think this is a relatively strong debut from V.S Hall; however, I can’t give this novel any more than 3 stars.

Disclosure: I read a review copy of the book.

There were occasional mild grammatical or stylistic errors. Though the book would benefit from additional proofreading and editing, it generally had high enough quality and professionalism. At first, I was a little put-off and bored by the initial background introductory material. Personally, I would have preferred if the author had woven such details gradually into the narrative, as was done for certain other background, world-building details. Once the story began, however, I was immediately hooked and thoroughly enjoyed reading the rest of the book!

The style is that of a light novel familiar to fans of anime and manga. I didn't realize this at first, but once it clicked I was able to relax and enjoy the ride. The characters were well-developed according to the conventions of this type of book. I could easily imagine this as a manga and/or anime and would gladly read a manga version as well as watch an anime version.

The fight scenes were well-realized and choreographed with an enjoyable and intriguing mix of mixed martial arts physical melee seamlessly combined with special powers.

As I mentioned earlier, the characters were relatable and fairly well-developed. However, some of the relationships were a bit too quickly developed (although, again, this sort of instant bonding is fairly typical in anime and manga). That being said, I did enjoy the relationships, both the romantic relationship and the friendships. I appreciated that the romantic relationship was not hypersexual but featured just the right amount of physical, sexual, and romantic attraction in ways that felt normal, age-appropriate, and non-gratuitous and did not feature the typical "fan service" descriptions common in anime/manga. I liked that commonalities were recognized between the protagonists and the antagonists while highlighting the underlying personal factors that differentiated them.

The story was rich enough in detail, background, and character motivation to keep me reading and interested.

I am eager to continue reading any further novels in this series and recommend it, particularly to manga, anime, and action-oriented young adult sci-fi/fantasy fans.

"The cost is unknown, as is the effect it will have."

An action-packed YA sci-fi debut with a unique premise and fascinating characters.

VS Hall writes wonderfully visual combat scenes that are easy to follow and kept me wanting more. I felt those scenes were the backbone of this fairly long book. Not only were they fun to read visually, but the occasional witty banter between the fighters reminded me of the Deadpool and Wolverine movie.

Unfortunately, the few information heavy sections of the book slowed my reading pace a bit, as did the few grammatical and formatting errors.

The depth of the characters followed the manga/anime style of VS Hall's writing; love developed quickly, jokes were slotted into serious conversations. These were young people, their quirks were expected.
Vin as a main character felt like an alpha male (no pun intended on the book's title) wanting to challenge anyone he could for the right to defend who he deemed worthy. His, and his fellow Naturals', powers were described with fascinating detail.

Kaz reminded me of Final Fantasy XV's Ignis Scientia - down to his culinary skills. He was quite likable.
Lae has all the potential to be a strong, inspirational female character.
Kyo was by far my favourite of Vin's fellow squad members. His backstory and character development had more meat and melancholy than some of the others.

Despite the broad premise of defending peace between Earth and the space colonies being clear, Vin's motivation (though stated) felt a little less weighty. But this being the first of a series of books, I'd expect his principles will be challenged in future books.

While the characters are young adults, the themes of terrorism and war obviously mean the book includes fairly graphic descriptions of violence, blood, gun use, as well as human and animal death.

Recommended to any and all sci-fi fans, particularly those who enjoy the genre in manga and anime.

Many thanks to the author and Booktasters for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The year is 3008. An Earth-Space war has ended. Survivors have been placed in colonies, protected by domed structures, which simulate the atmosphere on Earth. A terrorist group, known as Fang and led by a heinous gent referred to as Wolf, wishes to take revenge against earthlings, and it's up to the Alpha Squad of the Lunar Naturals to stop them. The story is narrated by an orphan named Vin Sylo who is gradually apprised of his Natural s-class powers (Naturals are categorized as D,C,B, A and S class, with S being the highest). Vin is taken to Colony 200, trained to fight and use his powers by other team members Kaz, Kyo, Lae and overseer Roy. He fights, survives, and actually wins a battle with Ookami, thereafter being transformed into membership with the Alpha Squad. The Lunar Council assigns Vin his first task, which is to go to Colony 152, discover what is being transported in and out, and secure the colony computer servers, which he accomplishes aided by AI called Nova.

OK, that's a summary of the story.

I have read similar novels about future societies, heroic superheroes and horrific villains, but they generally lacked a good premise, shorted on character development, relied on cliche', or were just plain hard to stick with. Alpha Squad has none of these. The scenario is just believable enough to seem plausible, the reader gets the chance to acclimate with Vin's development as he does, there is an interesting underlying relationship with Lae, and the formidable opponents have barely discernible weaknesses which can be exploited through superhuman means coupled with extraordinary effort. This is a long book, but it's tightly written, difficult to step away from, and solidly recommended.

Sci-fi Thriller Saga!

Adventures of a bunch of youngsters in the future set in 3008, they are no ordinary boys or girls, no, definitely not. It reads as thrillers do throughout this first book in the series. Absorbing and touching frequently, though set away in the far future it's somehow endearing because the young people encountered here retain many of our human qualities. This is what makes it such an attractive novel. They seem to carry enormous responsibilities on their shoulders. What helps them is that they possess augmented powerful skills, although they were not aware of these extraordinary powers at first. This is the first book of the series.

Young school going Vin Sylo suddenly finds himself on a distant space station, practically kidnapped there by an enemy, he thinks. At the time he's not aware that he is going to enter into an elite league still unaware of his unique gifts. Roy, he understands as an enemy so far, who has whisked him to this strange place, turns out to be the leader recruiting new special forces to build up his 'army', to defeat the real bunch of evil doers. They killed many of the parents of the Alpha Squad including Vin's mum and dad.

Joining the Alpha Squad completely transforms his life. Facing numerous challenges, daring action turns out to be his daily life. He is faced with several battles from the cunning, devious enemy. Roy is an able, courageous but a scrupulous parent like figure for them all.

The able author has cleverly crafted this adventurous mystery in the sci-fi genre, excellent story here, fascinating on the whole. The details of the science behind is captivating indeed.

Highly recommend all to enjoy.

Alpha Squad is the first in a series of Lunar Naturals books. The series begins after the ES Wars, in the space colonies in the orbits of the planets around earth. Vin Sylo is an independent teenager living in a refugee colony after the death of his parents in the violence following the wars.
As Vin is heading home from school one day, he sees a smaller child being bullied by a bigger lad. He decides to stand up for the smaller boy but as he does, he suddenly develops powers he’s never had before, his hands growing hot and producing flame. Startled, he isn’t sure what to make of this development but hasn’t much time to worry about it before he’s kidnapped and taken to another space colony. There, though he tries to escape, he discovers he has already been chosen to lead the Alpha Squad, a small group of exceptionally talented fighters whose mission is to defeat Fang, an enemy organization out to destroy the colonies altogether.
Much of the book is given to the developing relationships between the squad members. Friendships are formed between members, there’s even a touch of potential romance, but budding romances don’t really have time to bloom at this stage of the game. Fighting skill is what matters and it grows by leaps and bounds as training fills every day from start to finish.
Aloha Squad end with a daring action battle that’s breathlessly exciting, reading as it does, like a dashing encounter in an anime adventure. It makes for a satisfying read for any age group.

Alpha Squad (The Lunar Naturals Book 1 ) by V S Hall is a slightly intense read leaning more towards coming of age YA book set in distant future where terrorism and politically unrest have eclipsed the world. A terrorist attack leaves Vin's world shattered but he discovers that he has some extraordinary powers and he is recruited by an organisation to bring down the most daangerous teroorist. SImple language, a fast paced plot and descriptive action scenes are the strong points of this book but the story is too long.

A good action-packed, little light-hearted YA novel that's a nice read Thanks @booktasters for recommending this book

This was a sci-fi novel set in the year 3008. It was an entertaining read, with an interesting protagonist. With any novel in a futuristic setting, I think it's always interesting to see how the author shapes a world and brings it to life for the reader. I think it may be a little too long to read in one sitting, but that depends on your reading habits and the type of reader you are. I liked the way this author wrote, as I felt the story was entertaining, without the writing being overly complex.

I don't discriminate when it comes to book genres but I'm a sucker for science fiction. This book is so descriptive in it's storytelling. It's also intellectually stimulating as well for teenagers and adults. If you're someone that seeks novelty instead of normative storylines, this book is for you. However, I'd really love to read a comic version of this book and also watch a movie adaptation of this book.

This reading was just great! Everything starts so normal, but suddenly, we are presented to a whole different society, and Vin, who used to be alone in this world, finds a family in his new crew of fighters against an entity called the wolf who intends to kill all humans.

It was a very interesting read full of action scenes that don't get us bored at all, and is a nice book for non-sci-fi readers (me included hehe)
