Christian Jacq is a French author and Egyptologist. He has written several novels about ancient Egypt, notably a five book suite about pharaoh Ramses II, a character whom Jacq admires greatly.
Jacq's interest in Egyptology began when he was thirteen, and read History of Ancient Egyptian Civilization by Jacques Pirenne. This inspired him to write his first novel. He first visited Egypt when he was seventeen, went on to study Egyptology and archaeology at the Sorbonne, and is now one of the world's leading Egyptologists.
By the time he was eighteen, he had written eight books. His first commercially successful book was Champollion the Egyptian, published in 1987. As of 2004 he has written over fifty books, including several non-fiction books on the subject of Egyptology.
He and his wife later founded the Ramses Institute, which is dedicated to creating a photographic description of Egypt for the preservation of endangered archaeological sites.
Between 1995-1997, he published his best selling five book suite Ramsès, which is today published in over twenty-five countries. Each volume encompasses one aspect of Ramesses' known historical life, woven into a fictional tapestry of the ancient world for an epic tale of love, life and deceit.
Jacq's series describes a vision of the life of the pharaoh: he has two vile power-hungry siblings, Shanaar, his decadent older brother, and Dolora, his corrupted older sister who married his teacher. In his marital life, he first has Isetnofret (Iset) as a mistress (second Great Wife), meets his true love Nefertari (first Great Wife) and after their death, gets married to Maetnefrure in his old age. Jacq gives Ramesses only three biological children: Kha'emweset, Meritamen (she being the only child of Nefertari, the two others being from Iset) and Merneptah. The other "children" are only young officials trained for government and who are nicknamed "sons of the pharaoh".

Doua volume pline de aventuri, atat de plina de peripetii incat te nauceste, cel putin pe mine. Autorul este doctor in Arheologie si Egiptologie, deci o poveste aproape de "adevar".

Christian Jacq es uno de los autores de mi infancia, y si tuviera que definir a sus novelas a alguien que no le ha leído diría que es novela histórica con realismo mágico. Sus novelas están basadas en hechos reales como el reinado de Ramsés II o, como en este caso, la caída de Egipto frente a Persia, y contienen grandes detalles de como era la vida cotidiana en Egipto. Pero los dioses y su influencia siempre están presente, con mejor o peor acierto porque aunque configuran un Imperio realmente fascinante y mágico (y que de verdad vivía alrededor de los dioses) pero a veces la novela tiene un excesivo número de deus ex machina. En este caso se lleva la palma.
Una sacerdotisa, un escriba, un cómico y un asno son buscados por terribles crímenes desde Menfis hasta Tebas. No no les pillan ni mueren aunque cruzen un tramo del Nilo infestado de cocodrilos. El Faraón Amasis cae debido a una conspiración en la que sus mercenarios griegos le traicionan como él ha traicionado la tradición de Egipto. Toda una correría protegidos por los dioses para nada, para luego vivir exiliados en Nubia. ¿El lado bueno? Pues que es entretenido, fácil y rápido de leer y todavía Jacq consigue fascinarme con el Egipto que crea... pero no sé si cada vez me cuesta entrar más en su juego o que en este no ha estado acertado.

Tal como no volume anterior, constato que a escrita se mantém algo básica. Os diálogos e forma de agir dos personagens são pouco credíveis e a acção é brusca e rebuscada. Acontecem demasiadas peripécias, umas atrás das outras, a meu ver inverosímeis, já para não falar nas conclusões instantâneas a que algumas personagens conseguem chegar.
É uma pena, pois o ambiente criado transporta-nos para um Egipto que nos faz sonhar e os factos históricos relatados enriquecem-nos culturalmente.
Sendo uma eterna apaixonada pelo antigo Egipto, não consigo dizer que não gostei ou apreciei esta leitura de todo. É verdade que deixou muito a desejar e que nem de perto encheu as medidas, mas também não minto quando digo que foi uma leitura fácil e com o seu encanto, que me conseguiu transportar pelos caminhos do Alto e Baixo Egipto.
É uma pena, pois o ambiente criado transporta-nos para um Egipto que nos faz sonhar e os factos históricos relatados enriquecem-nos culturalmente.

I don't know if something was lost in translation (from the original French), but I just couldn't get into this book. I was expecting an ancient Egyptian murder mystery but this particular book was just about the chase for the suspects. The actual crime was just referenced occasionally-I did not realize this was the second in the series and it certainly doesn't work as a stand-alone novel. The writing came off as very stilted and impersonal. Combine that with the all-knowing donkey trusted to make major decisions and this book was a big no for me.

No me lo esperaba el final, pero si que tiene su lógica.
Ya que Egipto fue invadido por los persas, así que tiene mucho sentido de que a Kel y sus amigos no les da tiempo para advertir al rey.
Pero Amasis se lo merecía. Ya que era un poco estúpido (bueno, igual mucho) por confiar demasiado en las personas que cree que puede ser confiado.
Por otra parte. Me gusta más este segundo libro que la primera, porque aquí Nitis hace más cosas.
Y mi favorito sigue siendo Bebon, un crack.

À boa maneira de Christian Jacq, o bem vence o mal, mas, dado que a existência autónoma do Egipto acabou por terminar, este fim é aberto em relação à potência do casal que aqui consegue vencer. Encontrei este livro na Feira do Livro do Porto, sózinho, numa banca de um alfarrabista, depois de ter lido há muito tempo o primeiro volume numa biblioteca.
E que tal reeditarem estas obras? São romances excelentes, embora sempre com a mesma estrutura, embora quem encarne o maligno varie.

Esta segunda parte me resultó un poco más pesada por todas las vueltas que dan los protagonistas y algunas situaciones me parecieron un poco absurdas. La parte toda de la cultura, sus tradiciones y rituales son la mejor parte del libro, al estar tan bien explicadas por el autor. En cuanto a los malos no los descubrí. En su conjunto esta lectura me resultó entretenida. Me gustó más el primero.

Much better than its predecessor in so far as it promises and delivers a rapid build-up of thrilling plot twists and action. Otherwise, it is a seemingly wasted effort given that only a few readers possess the gumption to continue with a series which is defined by its first part's lack of passion.

I was glad to finish this book. I’ve enjoyed all the other books I’ve read by this author however these two books are just over the top. How could Kell Nitis and Bebon come out alive when so many things had happened in such a short amount of time. How didn’t they get killed ? Not my favourite

Quite repetitive in its schemes, although there’s a good twist at the end. Quite one dimensional but fascinating that it has some basis in fact.

This book is a little vivider though still the same. The first one is just a detective but this one has something of fantasy. The donkey (in my book Northern Wind) is great!

I always learn something from Jacq's books. In this case, it's the Divine Worshipper herself. She was God's Wife to Amun for 60 years, and had her own autonomous region-the whole of Thebes!
