About the author

Jens Lapidus is a Swedish criminal defense lawyer and author, who made his writing debut in August 2006 with Snabba Cash. It is an account of the Stockholm underworld and the first of a planned trilogy called The Stockholm Noir Trilogy. Two years later the second installment, Aldrig Fucka Upp was published by Wahlström & Widstrand. A graphic novel with illustrator Peter Bergting (The Portent) entitled Gängkrig 145 was published May 2009. While this project does tie into his previous novels, it is not the third part of The Stockholm Noir Trilogy as some Swedish media has claimed. Lapidus' writing has been compared to James Ellroy and Dennis Lehane.

JW is a bratty guy who fakes it till he makes it. He comes across as an elite person who flaunts his wealth. But he’s living a double life. To finance his luxury lifestyle, he starts selling drugs.

Jorge is in prison. But then he escapes.

Mrado wants to escape from his dangerous daily life full of violence, to live a normal life with his daughter.

What will happen when these three people’s lives collide?


This is the first book in a trilogy. I actually watched the sequel series on Netflix, which is a series that stands on its own with new characters. But it was enough to prepare me for what I could expect from the original book that started it all.


One of the things that immediately stood out to me was how many curse and dirty words are in this book. On one hand, this does feel right for the kind of story we’re experiencing here as it makes the story feel more authentic. But on the other hand, there were just so many of them that it started to hurt my overall enjoyment of this story. The writing style also didn’t really manage to hook me to be honest.

I also had a hard time caring about the characters. What I liked so much about the Netflix series was that the characters weren’t so black and white. They had layers. They were interesting. They could do very bad things, but they could also be very sympathetic at times. The characters in this book just don’t come across as likeable or interesting.


I can definitely see the potential. It has a fast pace and a solid dark plot full of raw violence. And I think this book could be a good read for the right audience. But 500 pages of this is just too much for me.

Μια ακόμη φρέσκια και λεπτομερής ματιά στον κόσμο του οργανωμένου εγκλήματος από σκανδιναβό συγγραφέα, πιο συγκεκριμένα τον Jens Lapidus, ποινικολόγο δικηγόρο στο επάγγελμα και μάλιστα από τους πιιο επιτυχημένους στη Σουηδία. Το γεγονός αυτό και η επαφή με ένα πληθός ατόμων που απαρτίζουν την ''αφρόκρεμα'' της μαστροπείας, της προστασίας και της μεγαλεμπορίας κοκαίνης που συνεπάγεται η δουλειά του, κάνει το βιβλίο του Lapidus να σφύζει από ζωντάνια και τους χαρακτήρες του να μην είναι μονοδιαστατοι και κατρικατόυρες (όπως σε πολλά ''γκανγκστερικά'' βιβλία) αλλά άνθρωποι, στων οποίων τις σκέψεις, τις αποφάσεις , τα κενά, τους φόβους και τις προσδοκίες αναγνωρίζουμε σίγουρα πολλές φορές τον εαυττό μας. Η ιστορία αφηγείται απο 3 διαφορετικά POV, τρία διαφορετικά πρόσωπα, τα οποία μπορούν εύστοχα να χαρακτηριστούν ως αντί-ήρωες. Ο JW, ένας πιτσιρικάς από την σουηδική επαρχία, έχει βάλει στόχο να γίνει πάμπλουτος και για να το πετύχει αφιερώνεται στην εμπορία και διακίνηση κοκαινης καθώς και στο ξέπλυμα χρήματος μέσω ενός πολύπλοκου δικτύου επιχειρήσεων. O Mrado, Σέρβος στην καταγωγή, έχει υπηρετήσει στα τάγματα εθελοντών του διαβόητου Αρκάν (''Τίγρεις΄΄), οι οποίοι έδρασαν στα χρόνια του πολέμου της Γιουγκοσλαβίας και διέπραξαν ασύλληπτες βαρβαρότητες εναντίον Βόσνιων και Κροατών. Όπως στα περισσότερα σκανδιναβικά crime books, οι ιστορίες των τριών πρωταγνιστών στην αρχή του βιβλίου φαίνεται να είναι αυτόνομες και ανεξάρτητες για να αρχίσουν σιγά σιγα να συγκλίνουν και να φτάσουν σε ένα αιματηρό, ''ταραντινικό'' φινάλε. Προκειται για ένα βιβλίο εξ'αντικειμένου βίαιο, χωρίς όμως να καταφέυγει σε σοκαριστικές περιγραφές για να διεγείρει το ενδιαφέρον. Αυτό το πετυχαίνει μέσα από έναν τρόπο γραφής που είναι ρεαλιστικός και αποφέυγει να κρίνει ηθικά τους βασικούς χαρακτήρες της ιστορίας. Από την άλλη πλευρά, ο Lapidus αποτυπώνει μέσα από το έργο του τη νέα κοινωνική πραγματικότητα για την Σουηδία, μια χώρα που τις δεκατιές του 1960 και 1970 εθεωρείτο ως η χώρα-πρότυπο ευνομίας και κοινωνικής πρόνοιας. Στις μέρες μας η πρωτεύουσα της (κυρίως), αντιμετωπίζει τα προβλήματα που έχουν όλες οι ευρωπαικές μητροπόλεις. Μετανάστευση, διακίνηση ναρκωτικών, αύξηση της λεγόμενης ''βαριάς'' εγκληματικότητας, έχουν αλλοιώσει την ειδυλλιακή εικόνα που προωθούσαν οι ίδιοι οι Σουηδοί για την χώρα τους. Το συστήνω ανεπιφύλακτα σε όλους, είναι ένα ιδιαίτερα ευχάριστο ανάγνωσμα που σε κάνει να νιώθεις ότι παρακολουθείς κινηματογραφική ταινία ( τύπου ''Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels'').

Τελός, να σημειώσω πως το ''Snabba Cash'' είναι το πρώτο μέρος της τριλογίας ''Stockholm Noir'' του συγγραφέα. Έχω ήδη στη διάθεση μου την συνέχεια, το δέυτερο βιβλίο με τίτλο ''Never Fuck Up'' και ανυπομονώ να το ξεκινήσω!

A crime novel about the dark and gritty backside of society set in Sweden. Follow a few points of views but mostly JW the wannabe rich dude that does everything he can to be with the rich crowd and buy expensive things just to show his status. This makes him being pulled longer and longer world in world of crime, drugs and the abuse of women. He's sister is missing and it isn't until way back in the end we got info about her. This was very readable and did pull you in. But this was just to brutal with the mentality that some people aren't worth anything and left me feeling sick and sad. It's not the most graphic I've read. I didn't end up enjoying this at all. I like my crime books containing people actively doing stuff to stop crime, not commit them.

This book is listed as yet another rival to Steig Larsen. This is at least the fifth book so advertised and by far the worst of the pretenders.. I am also a bit concerned that the author is listed as a criminal defense lawyer who represents some of Sweden's most notorious criminals. Really? The writing style is unusual and annoying starting sentences with verbs, run on sentences etc. The style is possibly intentionally manic, but disconcerting. There is nothing or no one to like associated with this book. Those of you who thought it was a thriller amaze me. I literally hated this book and myself for not putting it down after about 60 pages.

I almost never stop reading a book partway through, but 180 pages into this one I decided I was wasting my time. The narrative moves back and forth between three narrators, all of whom could be called anti-heroes, perhaps, except that I never found myself rooting for any of them. Either the writing or the translation has pretensions of slickness and with-it dialogue, but falls short, at least in English. When I read the part about a guy rewarding a "ho" with a complimentary haircut, i.e., "free stylin'," I about tossed the book across the room. Either the pun was that bad or the writing was that naive.

I just picked up the book to see if I could quote you more examples of the disingenuous swagger talk, but I realized I don't want to poison my hands by typing it.

A morally complex book will have you cheering on a bad person or a person doing bad things because you trust his motivation, you understand his quest, you like his intelligence or personality or just the cut of his jib, or you just want to see how the story turns out.

None of these were true for me for any of these distasteful figures, neither the social climbing club kid, the small-time Chilean coke dealer, nor the Slavic organized crime enforcer. They're all stereotypes, all full of themselves, and all they want is to make money and get away with their drug crimes.

You're supposed to want to know what happened to the young pretender's sister, but really, with close to 300 pages to go from where I stopped, I didn't care enough to keep slogging through.

Tras el éxito los libros de Larsson y su serie millenium llegó un diluvio de novelas negras desde todos los países nórdicos que inundaron las librerías. En ese momento aparece la trilogía negra de Estocolmo creada por Lapidus dónde retrata los bajos fondos que controlan todos los negocios sucios en la supuesta idílica capital sueca. Como parte positiva destaco que no es la tipica novela negra en la que tengamos que descubrir al asesino al estilo de christie como sucede en este tipo de novelas. Lo que menos me ha gustado es que los personajes tenía la sensación de haberlos ya visto en muchas películas de corte mafioso sin mucha originalidad en ninguno como si ocurre en los libros de larsson con su icónica protagonista femenina. A pesar de sus carencias me ha resultado una lectura entretenida y a lo largo de este año terminaré leyendo los dos libros que completan la serie.

A crime novel from three perspectives about the cocain business in Stockholm.
I mean, it was alright. Exciting at times but could have more of that, the last 50 pages was where it really picked up which was way too late in my opinion. Too long, the cash was neither easy nor fast since it took the author almost 500 pages to get there.

Von einem spannenden Krimi erwarte ich weitaus mehr.
Erzählt wird die Geschichte - aber was ist eigentlich die Handlung?- aus drei unterschiedlichen Perspektiven- einem Studenten, einem Kleinkriminellen und einem Berufskriminellen. Die Perspektive wechselt von Kapitel zu Kapitel, zur Spannung trägt dies aber nicht bei. Eigentlich dreht sich alles um den Kauf und Verkauf von Kokain, in den die drei involviert sind. Die Handlung zieht sich so sehr, dass das Ende während der Lektüre nicht absehbar erscheint. Insgesamt ist das Buch wenig unterhaltsam!

Creo que inauguraré el 2024 con una crítica más breve, en corto.

Dinero fácil vendría a ser como una gran sátira, de humor bastante negro, del ascensor social. Los tres personajes principales (Mrado, JW y Jorge) aspiran a enriquecerse y granjearse una vida muy cómoda y suntuosa por la vía rápida, vendiendo droga, participando en chantajes, extorsiones o lo que haga falta. Su objetivo es alcanzar unas esferas superiores que también se demuestran corruptas, una maquinaria infernal e incansable de consumir prostitución y cocaína a toneles. Nada se salva de la quema: profesores universitarios, funcionarios de prisiones, corredores de bolsas, ninguno de los personajes que aquí aparecen muestra un gran sentido del decoro, la ética sólo a veces se configura de forma extraña entorno a una especial idea del honor.

La escritura de Lapidus es tajante y cortante, emplea muchas frases cortas que en ocasiones deriva hacia un humor algo adolescente y en otras hacia la brutalidad. No es un plato para finos gourmets. Me ha gustado. Me ha recordado vagamente a James Ellroy, lo cual me recuerda que no estaría mal darle otra oportunidad y cambiar estos sombríos y nevados paisajes de Estocolmo por los soleados y violentos de Los Angeles.

Johan Westlund, más conocido como JW, es un muchacho que finge ser de una clase social a la que no pertenece mediante los ingresos generados por su trabajo en el servicio de taxis ilegales y, posiblemente a partir de ahora, el menudeo de sustancias prohibidas. Mrado es un mafioso serbio de porte impresionante encargado de labores de protección ilegal en locales de ocio que además suponen el control de otras actividades ilícitas que tienen lugar en ellos. Helt ok. Karaktärerna fångade mig inte riktigt då de allt som oftast var ganska tvådimensionella. Absolut lite spännande de sista 50 sidorna, men lite svårt att rättfärdiga när boken är 500 sidor lång.

I'll check out almost any translated crime fiction I come across, since the genre is often much better at providing a window into the everyday society of a place than more literary fiction. This Swedish thriller, however, proved to be an unimpressive, run-of-the-mill journey through an urban underworld, albeit Stockholm, as opposed to LA or NYC. The book follows three men: JW is a small-town Swede who has moved to the big city to reinvent himself as a college playboy, Jorge is a Latino cocaine hustler plotting an elaborate escape from jail, and Mrado is a immigrant Serbian thug who is deeply involved in the "Yugo" mafia. If you need to have a "sympathetic" protagonist in your fiction, this is definitely not the book for you. Each of the men is amoral, and Mrado is much much worse (there are repeated references to his being at Srebrenica), and there's no cop or lawbringer in the book other than some interludes comprised of court documents relating to the action.

Over its 400+ pages, the book slowly draws these three men closer and closer together for a climactic collision -- but along the way it delivers a detailed look at how various parts of the criminal world works. From the coat-check shakedown racket, to high-end prostitution, to dime-bags and international smuggling, it's all in there. The author is a well-known criminal defense lawyer, and clearly has plenty of insider knowledge about a lot of this stuff. Which is good, because it allows him to include reasonably interesting details on the backs of some fairly cardboard characters. Unfortunately, this is sometimes overshadowed by a wildly miscalculated attempt to incorporate far too much detail about brand name attire and high-end cars. I gather that in the original Swedish, the differences in language among characters lent much to the tone of the book, as did the slang and argot. However, in English, it generally comes across like terrible wanna-be American gangsterism. Another reviewer called it an "obnoxious" translation, which just about nails it -- every time some Swedish/Serbian thug would make "mad cheddar" or JW would "rock" a designer jacket just grated like nails on a blackboard.

It's also worth pointing out that the book is not very friendly to women -- most of the female supporting cast are victims (prostitutes, rape victims) or society airheads. On the flip side, each of the three main men also have some kind of female beacon of wholesomeness they cling to: JW's memory of his missing sister, Jorge's sister, and Mrado's daughter. This mainly feels like a cheap gimmick to try and humanize them and try and balance their otherwise poor life choices and amoral lifestyles. Ultimately, despite delivering some decent cheap thrills at times, the book is too long for its own good, and the reader is worn down by spending so much time with so many posturing, awful people. It does end with a kind of feel-good open-ended situation that makes me suspect there's a second book to come.

Note 1: The book has led to a trilogy of Swedish films (Snabba Cash I, II, III) and Zac Efron's production company is looking at maybe doing a US version.

Note 2: The cover of the US edition of the book has a hilarious design fail.The "o" in the titular "Money" has a slash through it, which is a letter that's not actually in the Swedish alphabet!

Lapiduksen nyky-Tukholmaan sijoittuva melko todentuntuinen rikosromaani lähestyy alamaailman hylkiöitä ja pomoja neljältä taholta.

Tapahtumia tarkastellaan Johan Westlundin elin JW:n, serbimafiosokapteenin Mradon, chileläissyntyisen vankikarkurin Jorgen sekä poliisin näkökulmista.

Alkusysäyksen tarinaan antaa JW:n sisaren katoaminen, joka johtaa veljen serbimafian jäljille. Johan on maalaispoika, joka haluaa päästä hengailemaan Stureplanin kulmille pohattojen kersojen kanssa. Samalla hän opiskelee, ajaa taksia ja myy kolaa.

Toinen keskeisimmistä hahmoista on legendaarisen vankilapaon tehnyt pikkunilkki ja huumediileri. Hän on joutunut serbimafian vuoksi lusimaan ja sitten onkin koston aika. Jorgen henkilöhahmossa tiivistyy niin monesta tarinasta tuttu takaa-ajettu, joka kuin ihmeen kaupalla pääsee tasaamaan tilejään.

Kolmas tekijä, jonka näkökulmasta kertomusta päästään seuraamaan, on kovan luokan torpedo ja mafiaveli vastuualueenaan narikat ja muut toisen luokan rahanpesuhommat. Hän on katkera kummisetä Radovanille ja entiselle vaimolleen. Silmäterä on pikkutyttö Lovisa, jota sikaniskainen tunteeton bodari hellii omituisesti. Tarkoituksena on varmaan näyttää, että karun kuoren alla voi kaikesta huolimatta olla rakastava isä ja toivoa paremmasta huomisesta.

Se neljäs näkökulma on poliisin, ja tarkemmin virallisen kuuloiset muistiot järjestäytyneen rikollisuuden tehotarkkailusta ja muutamien oikeudenkäyntien tuomiot perusteluinen sekä tarkkailuryhmien pöytäkirjaotteet.

Kaiken kaikkiaan kirja on rikoskirjallisuudesta ja Tukholman lähiöiden ongelmista kiinnostuneilla hyvää lomaluettavaa. Tarina pitää hyvin otteessaan ja näkökulmat vaihtuvat tarpeeksi ripeään ja kertomus soljuu hyvin notkeasti eteenpäin. Miinuksena tässäkin kirjassa on poliisien saamattomuus ja osaamattomuus liiankin monessa kohtaa. Remesmäisesti aina viime tipassa jepet jäävät nuolemaan näppejään eikä kukaan tunnu osaavan puuttua lähes avoimesti rehottavaan huumebisnekseen ja suurbileisiin, joihin ottavat osaa niin bisnesmaailman kihot kuin prinsessatkin.

Romaanista on tehty myös elokuva. Se on surkeaa katseltavaa, eikä tarinan draamallinen jännite kestä ollenkaan. Kirjassahan se liittyy olennaisesti JW:n siskon murhamysteeriin, ja lopussa palaset loksahtavat paikoilleen. Pitkälti käsivaralta kuvatussa pätkässä palikat ovat hukassa. Kirjan bodarit ovat käyneet harvakseltaan salilla, Jorge hyppää ensi töikseen pakoon linnasta, ja tarinaan on hankala päästä sisälle lukematta kirjaa.

Ik lees nooit thrillers. Maar op familiebezoek kwam ik zonder boek te zitten; en raadde mijn vader me ‘Snel geld’ aan. Het leek me leuk om een keer hetzelfde boek als hem te lezen. Dus ik begon…

…en was meteen vijftig pagina’s verder. Het verhaal start met de ontvoering van een jonge vrouw. Daarna wordt ieder hoofdstuk verteld vanuit het perspectief van wisselende hoofdpersonages: allemaal criminelen (onder andere in cocaïne, afpersing, prostitutie, wapenhandel, en witwasserij).

Halverwege het boek realiseerde ik me meeleefde met de hoofdpersonen. Bijzonder vond ik dat, gezien het feit dat ze regelmatig geweld plegen. Dat maakt ‘Snel geld’, naast een page-turner, ook een interessante empathische leeservaring.

Een goede keus voor wie een makkelijk leesbaar verhaal zoekt, en het misschien na lange tijd weer eens aandurft een keer thriller te proberen.

"Snel Geld" is het eerste deel in de zogeheten "Stockholm Trilogie".

In sommige publicaties wordt Lapidus met Stieg Larsson en zijn milleniumtrilogie vergeleken. Dat klopt dus helemaal niet. Behalve dat beide verhalen zich in Stockholm afspelen, lijken de boeken verder weinig op elkaar. Lapidus is vele malen rauwer dan Larsson. Bovendien schrijft Lapidus geheel vanuit het perspectief van de 'slechteriken'.

Snel Geld speelt zich vooral af op en rond Stureplan in het hart van Stockholm. Het gaat over de onderwereld van Stockholm, criminelen die alleen geïnteresseerd zijn in veel en snel geld. Het verhaal begint met een jonge vrouw, die ontvoerd wordt. Later zal blijken wat dit met de rest van het verhaal te maken heeft.

We volgen drie criminelen die nauw met elkaar verbonden blijken te zijn:

Mrado, de Joegoslavische huurling, die zijn positie in de onderwereld moet behouden. Hij werkt voor de Joegoslavische maffiabaas Radovan en beheert diverse zaken voor hem. Hij verliest gaandeweg het vertrouwen van zijn baas. Desondanks doet hij zijn stinkende best om de praktijken in de misdadige onderwereld goed te laten verlopen. Hij wil ondertussen de voogdij over zijn dochtertje krijgen,

Jorge, de drugsdealende latino, die ontsnapt is uit de gevangenis en sindsdien op de vlucht is. Hij is eropuit om degenen die hem verraden hebben terug te pakken - alleen heeft hij geen geld,

en de student JW, die geld nodig heeft om zijn dure levensstijl te kunnen betalen. Hij is een student economie en rijdt taxiritten. Hij zet zijn eerste stappen als drugsdealer.

Via de drugsscene komt JW in aanraking met Mrado en Jorge. De levens van deze personen raken langzamerhand steeds meer met elkaar verweven. Het bestaan in de onderwereld biedt geen enkele veiligheid; niet alleen de politie is je vijand, maar ook je eigen collega-crimineel. Alle drie zijn ze betrokken bij de verdwijning van een jonge vrouw en zonder dat ze het weten, worden ze alle drie gemanipuleerd door een machtige man achter de schermen, Stockholms genadeloze maffialeider Radovan.

Daarnaast hebben deze drie personen één ding gemeen: ze hebben alle drie een vrouwelijke bijfiguur die belangrijk voor ze is. Voor JW is dat zijn zus die vier jaar geleden verdwenen is; voor Jorge is het zijn zus Paola, die bedreigd wordt door de Joego's en voor Mrado is dat zijn dochtertje, die hij maar af en toe mag zien. Het belang van deze bijfiguren wordt steeds duidelijker naarmate het boek vordert...

Jens Lapidus toont welke clans zich bezighouden met welk soort misdaad, hoe de winsten worden omgezet in wit geld. Hij vertelt over personen, die ook hun persoonlijke bagage meenemen: JW, die een verdwenen zus betreurt, en Mrado, die vecht voor een gedeelde voogdij over zijn dochtertje.

De hoofdstukken hebben iedere keer één van deze mannen als hoofdpersoon. Om de sfeer van de onderwereld weer te geven maakt Lapidus gebruik van een afgemeten stijl. Henning Mankell gebruikt korte zinnen, maar Lapidus gebruikt staccato- zinnen. Hij gebruikt straattaal en krachttermen. De rauwe taal heeft hij uit de rechtszaal opgepikt van verdachten. Er zijn grove beschrijvingen van hardhandig optreden en geweld.

Eer, trouw, misdaad en verraad zijn de thema’s in het boek, naast overleven. Snel geld vertelt voornamelijk het verhaal van de criminelen; de kant van de politie en wat zij doet om deze criminaliteit te bestrijden komt af en toe aan bod door middel van ingelaste rechtbank- en politierapporten. De harde onderwereld in Zweden wordt heel treffend en realistisch geschetst, evenals de connecties met de bovenwereld. Alle facetten over criminaliteit, drugs, sex en het wit wassen van geld komen in dit verhaal aan bod. De wereld die Lapidus schetst is zwart, gewelddadig, naargeestig en somber.

Snel Geld is geen traditionele detective met veel politieonderzoek. In tegenstelling tot veel andere thrillers is er geen advocaat, journalist of politieagent, die de hoofdpersoon is, maar maakt een drietal onderwereldfiguren de dienst uit. De onverbeterlijke crimineel bestaat in dit boek niet. Misdadigers zijn ook maar mensen en de advocaat Lapidus laat het oordeel alleen aan de lezer. Het boek gaat ook over de complexiteit van menselijke drijfveren. Alle drie de hoofdpersonen dromen er eigenlijk van om met hun onzekere bestaan te stoppen, zodra ze voldoende geld hebben vergaard. ‘Te veel moraliseren vernietigt goede literatuur’, zegt Jens Lapidus. ‘Mijn eigen opvattingen houd ik buiten mijn boeken. Mijn personages hebben hun eigen ethische codes, maar de lezers moeten zelf beslissen wat goed is en wat slecht. Mijn ambitie was 'de crimineel' een menselijk gezicht te geven. Hun dromen, hun haat, hun liefde. Ik wilde ondanks alles niet als monsters naar voren laten komen, maar als mensen.’

Omdat Jens Lapidus zelf een zeer succesvol strafrechtadvocaat is, zet hij een overtuigend crimineel Stockholm neer. Vanuit zijn vak als strafrechtadvocaat verdedigde hij enkele van de meest beruchte misdadigers van het land en kreeg zo een unieke kijk in hun wereld. Lapidus: "Het idee dat Zweden een welvaartsstaat is waar het allen goed gaat is een fabel. Dat geïdealiseerde beeld van Zweden klopt al meer dan twintig jaar niet meer. Wat ik beschrijf in Snel geld is de realiteit van vandaag in Stockholm."

Drie sterren, alhoewel ik het taalgebruik, zoals straattaal niet zo leuk vond om te lezen, maar ja, ze praten zo. Het boek is goed geschreven, maar rauw. Op het boek staat, dat het een thriller is, maar dat is volgens mij niet zo, meer een soort documentaire in boekvorm. Spanning was er ook niet echt. Volgens Lapidus is Snel geld de realiteit en daar was ik toch wel erg van geschrokken.

En sjukt bra bok. Den var både spännande och lätt att läsa. Gillade verkligen att man får följa tre huvudkaraktärer. Boken får en stark 4:a i betyg nästan att den är 4,5 stjärnor. Ska bli kul att fortsätta läsa den här serien.

Als liefhebber van Scandi thrillers ben ik door dit deel nog niet overtuigd. Wellicht door de schrijfstijl en de vele verhaallijnen die door elkaar lopen. Deel 2 krijgt van mij nog eens kans, want die ligt toch al klaar...

This one's been adapted to movies multiple times but is still extremely underrated, at least here in anglo world. It's as good as crime fiction gets, taking the same approach as The Wire and really taking the time to study how crime happens and the sociology o f it. Worth your time to read the whole trilogy.

The blurb on the cover of Easy Money promises that it is a "thriller to rival the Stieg Larsson books."

Well, Easy Money is a thriller, and entertaining enough in its own right, but it definitely does not rival the Millennium Trilogy.

Easy Money tells the story three criminals: Mrado, a high-ranking member of a Serbian organized crime ring in Stockholm; Jorge, a lower-ranking cocaine dealer who, after being burned by Mrado, is plotting revenge against Mrado and the other Serbs whose actions put him in prison; and JW, a young college student who is just starting out as a cocaine dealer and who is wildly successful at it.

For most of the novel, the chapters rotate among the three main characters, telling their respective stories. While all three are definitely criminals and, excepting JW, guilty of committing some very violent crimes, they all do have redeeming qualities and are actually rather likable individuals.

The plot is driven by two main elements: (1) a major cocaine buy that will bring millions of dollars worth of the drug to Sweden and (2) Jorge's quest for revenge against the Mrado and the Serbs. A minor but still very prominent subplot involves JW's sister's disappearance and his efforts to discover what happened to her. In the end, the author wraps up these story-lines quite nicely.

Easy Money is an enjoyable read with a lot of action and violence and a focus on the extravagant lifestyles of the rich and drug-addled. It's not great literature by any stretch of the imagination, and it's not even on a par with Larsson's novels, but it's a fun book: it's a good, down-and-dirty, trashy crime novel.

i had trouble getting into the story. start reading the book, then put it away for a while. I never stop reading a book, so I picked it up again. when I put it away again I found myself wondering how the story would continue. so I finished the book and it was oke. also ordered the rest of the serie. but to say that this is the new Stieg Larsson, no way not even close. it was just a oke book.

I generally love Scandinavian noir, but this was actually pretty boring. It's one of those books that reads as if the author had aspirations of getting it made into a movie as soon as possible. And guess what? It's a movie. I also wondered if it was a bad translation.

Jorge Salinas Barrio, Johan Westlund (JW) en Mrado Slovovic zijn de drie sleutelfiguren in Snel geld, het eerste deel van de Stockholm trilogie. Jorge is een drugsdealer die spectaculair uit de gevangenis is ontsnapt. JW een student die niet tevreden is met zijn huidige levensstandaard en zo snel mogelijk rijk wil worden. Mrado een Joegoslavische huurling en keiharde crimineel die nergens voor terugdeinst.

Na zijn ontsnapping probeert Jorge uit handen van de politie te blijven, kan geen afscheid nemen van zijn criminele leven, wil het liefst het land uit, maar wil ook op jacht naar de Joegoslaven die ervoor zorgden dat hij gevangen zat. JW werkt als taxichauffeur, maar vindt zijn inkomen niet voldoende om te leven zoals hij wil. Daarom verkoopt hij, aanvankelijk op kleine schaal, cocaine. Mrado neemt binnen de Stockholmse onderwereld een vrij hoge positie in, maar hij wil meer. Wordt gedegradeerd en zint op wraak.

Het verhaal speelt zich vooral af in de onderwereld van Stockholm. Jens Lapidus geeft daarvan een aardig en realistisch overkomende beeld. Wel kun je je afvragen of het allemaal inderdaad zo erg is als wordt beschreven. Zo ja, dan lijkt Stockholm een niet erg veilige stad.

De hoofdstukken hebben afwisselend iedere keer een van de drie belangrijkste personages als hoofdpersoon. De lezer leert hen daardoor vrij goed kennen. Het is al vrij snel duidelijk dat de drie met elkaar te maken krijgen, maar die kennis is niet nadelig voor het verhaal. Het is juist wel interessant om te lezen hoe die stappen worden gemaakt.

De schrijfstijl van Lapidus is wat ongebruikelijk en het is daardoor, zeker in het begin, wel even wennen. Door deze manier van schrijven, leest het boek niet overal even vlot. De grote hoeveelheid straattaal die in het boek voorkomt werkt dat ook niet in de hand. Het duurt even voor je doorhebt wat er precies met een bepaald woord bedoeld wordt.

Het verhaal speelt zich in een redelijke snelheid af, maar echt spannend wordt het nergens. Het plot enigszins uitgezonderd. Dan wordt het wat sneller en spannender. Veel verrassende wendingen kent het boek niet. Dit is niet nadelig want het verhaal blijft op zich wel intrigeren. Hoewel het boek ook wel fragmenten heeft die weggelaten hadden kunnen worden.

Jens Lapidus heeft met Snel geld een goed debuut geschreven. Maar dat hij destijds overladen is met allerlei superlatieve complimenten is een wat overdreven. Want hij moet zichzelf in zijn volgende boeken ook nog bewijzen.
