Some inventions are so important that they have changed human history. This book looks at some of the most significant inventions from ancient times to the present day, including developments within printing, mathematics, navigation, weapons, flight, communications and computers. Explores these innovations and the impact they have had on our world and our lives.
The hope and desire of humankind created many inventions. However, ironically, I learned that many war, especially the world war helped many progress of many invention on this book.
I felt that the book was sometimes difficult in spite of level 4. Describing many difficult things is needed difficult words. Moreover, although they were the sentences that were written in easy words, there were some sentences which I finally had understood the meaning as I looked them up on the internet, because of things for not familiar with us who live in modern era.
I like this book. It tells us nearly all the inventions that made the World better. Before I read this book, I just knew the inventions but didn't know anything about the inventors but this book told me all about them. Also, It reminded me of some movies. I've watched the movies about the great inventions and how they've affected the World. And, actually, I want to recommend this book to people who really like the Math or Science. I assure they'll be so interested in this book.
Themes: Man as Inventors/ Changes in Technology/ Risk and Danger/ Pushing Human Understanding
Opener: “When personal computers first appeared, people began to talk of the ‘paperless office.’ Everything would be done on computer, and there would be no need for paper copies. This didn’t happen. The new computers came with desktop printers and now more, not fewer, pages are printed. The story of printing is a long one, and it continues today.”
Summary: This book covers the history and development of some of the world’s most important and influential inventions. It is arranged thematically in nine chapters which discuss key inventions from their earliest beginnings to the present day. Information about the inventors, too, makes the text lively and engaging throughout.
Verdict: This book illuminates the myriad inventions of the history of mankind. Throughout the book, the connections between these seemingly disparate inventions are explained. Human beings have been inventors from the earliest breakthroughs in understanding and application, such as the first use of tools and the discovery of fire. It is a part of what it means to be human, to find new ways to solve problems and methods for making our lives easier. The inventors in this book may have lived centuries apart, but they are united by their common goal of turning their ideas into reality and building upon the knowledge and experiences of the previous generations.
It was really a good chance to read this book in the morning of this day.First, the book talks about most popular and important inventions that have changed the world significantly. The book also tells you about many thinkers, scientists and inventors who have contributed in these inventions from the beginning of the emergence of the idea down to make it real and use.The book also shows the methodology of science and philosophy and how philosophers think about ideas and then scientists come to make it real and useful. In addition, the book shows how inventions improve gradually and how they are used later in different fields.
"Inventors are unusual people. They often have to work for years to turn their ideas into something that works. They can make a lot of money doing this---or lose everything they have." "There are recent signs that this is changing, and new ideas are coming from many more parts of the world. One thing, though, will never change---the ability of human beings to look at something old and think of something new." While reading this book, I found these two phrases and both I really liked it so much.
This book picked up the inventions, and describe it when, who, how it became in each chapter. I enjoyed reading at the beginning, but it got bored because it is too difficult for people doesn't know much about Maths or technology. But I like the last chapter about an idea. It gives some examples who got idea and made it as a product like Velcro and Lock-nuts. Lastly the writer introduced Bayliss's radio which has a handle to produce electricity. This helped the people in poorer countries who doesn't have an electricity at all. I like this story and everyone can be the inventors.

However, have someone ever ask yourself about where it is come from, who invent it or how it is made? Well, if you mention about those, you should take time to read this book. It is very good book because it brings to us a lot of knowledge about inventors. This book can answer all of the question above. This book tells about how the printing machines, the guns, the steam engines, the flying machines, balloons, telephone, radio, television, computers,...were made, who created them, where the inventors got their ideas...Also, this book give the time they created them. When those inventions appeared, they helped people very much in their jobs as well as their lives. Moreover, they also changed the world.
2. One of things that surprise me most when i read this book is Chinese people are the inventors who had idea in inventing printing machine and the gun as well. I have never thought that Chinese people invented them. In my mind, I always think that inventions are usually invented by Europe and American people. That is so surprise me.
