Lieutenant Nick Leandros is a battle-hardened soldier who thinks he's seen everything. But nothing prepares him for the horror he encounters in a dark, war-torn forest. The carnage fractures him--body and soul. Split into three separate men with three savage wills, he struggles to tame the cunning creatures and hold them inside.
His only hope of salvation is Dessa, a beautiful dryad who is bound to Nick by mystic forces. She alone understands what he has become, and Nick is the only man who can give her the child she needs. But the cruelest, most lustful part of him demands her submission as the price for his help. With her powers waning every day, time is running out for Dessa to save the last forests of her country...and to heal the man she's come to love.
Stephanie Draven lives in a city of ravens and purple night skies with her favorite nocturnal creatures. And when she is not busy with dark domestic rituals, she writes her books.
Wild, Tethered, Bound is another quick steamy Nocturne Bite from Draven and like her other stories she uses war as a catalyst to bring a mythological entity to life. This time it is the hero Nick whose experience in Afaganastan fractures him, while an encounter with a dryad just before his traumatic split, leaves him as her only hope for a future.
Wild, Tethered, Bound is the third story (along with Midnight Medusa and Poisoned Kisses) that I've read by Draven and one thing that Draven does well is to take highly original premise and kick the story off with a captivating opening. I couldn't wait to find out the story behind Nick, Vic and Rick. As to the execution, with such an interesting idea I really wish that this could have been a full length book, because with setting the stage, taking a step back to explain Nick's condition and his connection to the heroine, and the finale, there wasn't much space to really build a romance between the pair only to bring them together long enough to change both of their lives. (FYI - their 'connection' brings a whole new meaning to 'me, myself and I' in a menage love scene with the heroine.)
I enjoyed this book a lot. As with Draven's first Bites, MIDNIGHT MEDUSA, this is an intelligent and well-written story. It is refreshing to see Bites that stray from the norm of weres or vamps, and this one links current affairs that people are (or should be!) aware about with a challenging love story. I just love Draven's application of mythical creatures to things that are happening in our time.
The conflicts and emotions were real and believable, the premise was clever and well-thought out. I enjoyed the characters, particularly the hero, although the heroine was also very appealing, earthy and deep.
I felt that the relationship between the tortured, resolute hero and the mythical, strong heroine could have been explored a little more, but I understand that these Bites don't allow much room for movement.
I'd love to see a full-length from this author, where the relationships could be more detailed and the build-up of sexual tension more developed, because the rest of her story rocked. :)
Do you like steam? Who doesn't?! My face was red as firecracker in the midst of reading this novel! The chimera mythology tied to PTSD and the soldier created an unique experience. Normally, one would expect that the chimeran-man would transform into a beast instead of becoming three separate beings. Adding in a wood nymph, a VERY sensual one I might add, was a remarkable choice. Initially, I thought why a nymph and a chimera? But as the story unfolded, it made sense and the steam rose in the room.
The descriptions were eloquent. I laughed at quite a number of places, which I won't spoil for others, but the comedic timing was dead on. Ms. Draven's choice to use gambling metaphors and terms while in the casino and continuing to use that theme for certain characters enriched the flavor of language. The ending has to be another favorite. Spot on. I giggle aloud at the choice.
Now I must wait a couple of more months for the next novel to hit stores. Woe is me :(
