Rate this book
A widow finds love. A soldier seeks redemption. A murderous bandit threatens to destroy them both. RuthAnne Newcomb, a young widow starting over, nearly dies on the perilous winding road to Tucson, Arizona in 1876. The accident is a cover-up for a heinous crime at the hand of the murderous bandit El Tejano. Robbed and left for dead, all that remains for RuthAnne is her faith and her God-given talents. She needs both to endure the handsome, vengeful cavalry captain who saves her life. Captain Bowen Shepherd offers aid in exchange for information leading to the criminal's capture. El Tejano is bound to strike again, likely against the only living witness to his crimes. Bowen and RuthAnne must work together and risk everything to unmask the bandit. Will their newfound love, or their lives, be the cost of bringing a murderer to justice?

Ashley Ludwig wove a great adventure tale of the rough west of the past in this book. Her characters, the practical RuthAnne Newcomb and the rough Captain Bowen Shepherd, are likeable and interesting. She does a great job of describing life in an army camp and the role of a washer woman in the army. I enjoyed joining Bowen and RuthAnne on their adventures to uncover the identity of the bandit intent on killing RuthAnne.

Pulls you in right away!

Couldn't stop reading this one, it pulled me in right away. The characters are so real and well written I felt like I was there. My only complaint is the abrupt ending, I thought there could have been an epilogue, or maybe a sequel?

Ms. Ludwig’s story takes place in the old west of 1876 in Arizona. Her portrayal of the developing romance between RuthAnne, a beautiful widow, and Bowen, an army captain, is tastefully done, remaining sweet. Her descriptions of the landscape, clothing, and every aspect of life in those times is so striking and vivid. You’re placed right there amidst the scorching heat of the Arizona sun and desert. The dangerous bandit El Tejano and other characters are brought to life as RuthAnne and Bowen find each other, in heart and soul. This is the second story of Ms. Ludwig’s I’ve read and like the first one; this one is a wonderful read.

Very nice piece of historical fiction, set in romance within this novel. Detail and plot are quite believable, and the book really brought the area I grew up in to life in it's historic state. That said, the author will likely end her friendship with me because my review makes no sense. All I can say is I enjoyed the read.

I'm throughly enjoying this book. I'm feeling for RuthAnne. I can't wait to turn each page and get closer to who the mysterious bandit is and if he gets to RuthAnne and her sister again.
