The Slain Princess

Rate this book
Jinua, Ontiku, Hylas, and Aketa have finally made it to the city of Varse, and will at last uncover the identity of R--the mysterious benefactor of evil necromancers and dogmatic necro-haters alike.

But before they can properly investigate and find their foe, Jinua and Ontiku learn that the crown princess of Varse has recently been assassinated. And there's reason to believe a necromancer is involved.

As such, the grief-stricken king and queen are hunting down all necromancers in their city. Jinua needs to solve this murder and find R before Ontiku and Hylas's necromancy are discovered. But as she gets closer to her quarry, R is setting their own trap for the new paladin and her friends...

The Slain Princess is the fifth installment of the Blackwing novella series, and will be the last installment until 2024.

I give this a 4.5/5

With a final blow, we see the close of this part Blackwing Series. I love this series. The representation is varied, and done with care and respect. I enjoy the found family trope that has built throughout the series. The characters have really grown together in understanding and friendship. I love that there is no romance between the principal characters, just friendship, leaning towards a sibling style relationship, especially with the confirmed age gap. The more minor of the core characters, Hylas and Aketa, get a bit more screen time, showing the healing and growth the teens have done. Their tight sibling relationship is so sweet, even with Aketa still struggling with the reveal of the last book.
Ontiku continues to be my favorite character, who really leans into the old grumpy gay trope. I love his aside comments, and the peak further into his background we got in The Slain Princess. This finale did make me cry some, but more often than not, I was just angry on behalf of the titles Princess, and the other victims of the villain R. How could one person be so hateful. I really like the wrap up on this arc of finding R, and ending their reign of terror, while giving us a firm confirmation that the story will continue. The final reveal for Jinua that I had been suspecting for the last three installments was very satisfying as well. The only real downside to this book for me is that it's really gory. More so than the others. It is to expected with a fantasy series revolving around necromancy and war, but it's a lot in some moments.

Another great read in the Blackwing saga !

Love the world building in this fifth installment of Blackwing books. “R” is finally revealed, but not yet defeated. And we find more information about why the crows are following Jinua. Oh, this book felt much darker than the others. Perhaps it’s because some of the characters I liked died. I wanted to get to know the other necromancer’s but unfortunately that didn’t happen. we definitely need more books! There are too many questions that need to be answered.

Another wonderful tale

Once again a wonderful story with. Intriguing and believable characters. C. M. Alongi has a straightforward, yet still evocative writing style that makes her books a joy to read when relaxing, while never feeling too simple.
Can't wait to read more from the point of view of this diverse cast of characters.

An Amazing Arc Finale

Most of the plot threads for the arc are tied up nicely, and the ones that haven't been are set up for future arcs. Ms. Alongi has woven a unique world here. I reccomend reading this series from beginning to the end of this one, and then waiting patiently for the new arcs.

This is a good conclusion to the first series arc and the setup for the next two arcs is also established. A lot was resolved, and Jinua still has a semi-solid relationship with her faith and gets to keep her Paladin powers. Win win! 😂

Looking forward to the next arc and the continuing adventures of Jinua and Ontiku.

Outstanding

I like how invested in each character the author made me. Cheering for Jinua and her companions. Hoping that each would manage their goals. Impatient, now for the coming years, to read the next parts!

There's been an obvious increase in the quality of the writing and layout of these books since the series began!

This one was excellent both in terms of style and pacing. I will continue to read the next ones.
