enjoyable
Pretty good story. A little overly complicated in some areas with very complex characters.
But I suppose that’s a good thing for some people, it’s just not particularly mine. Otherwise, I enjoyed the world building and the fantasy aspects. Good writing, cool story.

Jade Bear Claw Amulet
Sam's grandfather passes with one wish - to protect the Jade Bear Claw. The granddaughter, Sam, is returning to Dallas to go to Henderson, Texas, to live with her crazy Aunt Betsy, and her father is having her grandfather's remains cremated. On her travels, Sam meets Brad and lets him know that she was originally from Shreveport, Louisiana, and Texas would be an adjustment. Sam confesses to Cindy and Brad that her aunt is kind of crazy. Sam has a black belt in martial arts, and Aunt Betsy, who has military experience, says that's not enough to protect the amulet. Sam keeps having nightmares about a monster with fiery red eyes. Sam rides horses with a boy named Frank. He shows her a horse named Ice Princess or "Ice" for short. After riding horses, Frank shows Sam how to take care of the horses. Sam wants to try to ride ice, but Frank says that Ice is too difficult of a horse to ride for a beginner. When Aunt Betsy is fighting an unknown entity with a knife, she has Frank and Sam leave.
Frank finds a dead cow. Sam believes that someone is following her. Brad shows up. I'm detecting that Frank and Brad are competing for Sam's attention. Two of Frank's tires were slashed. It is suspect that Brad did it. Brad notices that Sam is wearing the Jade Bear Claw Amulet. Aunt Betsy is missing. Frank explains to Sam that he is her protector and that demons want to steal her amulet necklace. The demons are coming after Sam and all of her friends and family. Will Sam be able to protect the amulet necklace as her grandfather asked her to do?

The Jade Amulet is a fun YA fantasy that grabbed me much faster than I expected. Right from the start, the story has a tense energy that makes it feel like something bad could happen at any moment. Sam’s grief for her grandfather gives the story real emotional weight, and I liked that the supernatural parts never take away from that sadness. Her grief stays with her and influences what she does, which made her feel real to me—not just another “chosen one.”
The way the author builds the world and adds small details is great in this book. There is a lot happening, with different creatures, secret pasts, and changing friendships. I kept trying to figure out what was real, who could be trusted, and what the amulet could really do.
The action scenes really stood out to me. You can tell the author put a lot of thought into how Sam moves, fights, and reacts. The martial arts parts made the danger feel close and real, not just something magical and distant. I also liked the tension in the relationships, especially how uncertain things felt with new people entering Sam’s life when she was vulnerable.
Overall, this was a fast and engaging read that kept me interested and made me want to learn more about the world. It’s emotional, intense, and full of energy. I’d definitely want to read another book set in this universe.

I was excited and honored to be on the advance review team for this novel. Each chapter was fast-paced and suspenseful. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy fantasy, very likeable characters, not-so-likeable characters, mystery, martial arts, friendships, family, and romance (i.e., everyone). Congratulations to the author! I'm looking forward to her future novels.

Terrific, Exciting and Page Turning
Michelle Adams has written a superb book. I don’t normally read young adult urban fantasy books but this story kept me interested and engaged from the very first page. I could not put it down! Imaginative, with great narrative and dialogue. I loved this book, and can't wait to read the next one in the series.

I enjoyed the book immensely, especially the way the author introduced each character. Slowly building up the characters and how they react with the main character.

A very good read
Loved the storyline, very different to what I usually read.
Sam is a reluctant heroine, but rises to the challenges with Brad and Frank helping her along with her Aunt Betsy who Sam had always thought was telling crazy stories.
