TORANOS WALKS THE EARTH! An Elder God of the Utgard-Realm had marked Thor for destruction - and a city with him. Yet the only power that could prevail carried its own terrible price.

This was a really enjoyable second issue. It must have been in a EpicMarvelPodcast of an old volume of Thor that I'd heard Mjolnir was capable of opening portals so it was cool to see that callback in this issue. It was also interesting to see the use of quite a lot of thought bubbles too so this issue had a bit of an old school feel. However I do love that we are seeing the more interesting modern use of Loki built on what Ewing has done before with the character and also what Aaron did too; a not evil or good Loki is best. Looking forward to what comes next!

Ewing displays his skill for both setting up a bigger story and writing a compelling single issue. This issue has two clear acts: Thor at the limits of his strength against Toranos and Thor at the limits of his wits against Loki. The brooding, biblical narration ties both halves together, linking strength/knowledge inextricably. Plus the scene where Thor reconstructs the destroyed Statue of Liberty is pretty badass.

In my review of the first issuemy review of the first issue of Immortal Thor, I explained why Thor may have a reason to smile more. In this one, the first of the author's two objectives is to give Thor threats that fit his profile as a hero that stands above other heroes. In this one, we get an elder god ominously named Utgard-Thor.

Thor actually uses his brains instead of might here, learning that sometimes you can't always win but you can win at the situation. But this leaves Thor in a bad state and has to trust his brother, which isn't always easy to do.

Very interesting, love the stuff with Loki and Thor and the art is excellent. Some nice callbacks from Thor's mythos too. Still not sure on the villains but everything else is working for me.

More compelling than the first issue. Al Ewing is bringing back some elements of the mythos, while keeping things feeling fresh. And Loki is here of course. I haven’t read Ewing’s Loki, but I have read them in his Defenders run(s) so I’m familiar with his take, and my interest grew substantially when they showed up.

Toranos is fiendin’, Thor is left huffin’ and puffin’, Loki is schemin’, and a nice classic Thor yarn is brewin’.
