A Little Book About The Big Bang by Tony Rothman is literally a little book about the big bang. Cosmology, Einstein's theory of relativity, the Universe, the dark matter, galaxy, multiverse and metaphysics are the talks of the book. Spread through 15 chapters, this books provides theories as answers or probable answers to the questions of the cosmology, astronomy and quantam physics that are yet unanswered.
Although brief, I wasn't able to generate a lot of interest in it. Bit more of language simplification could have probably helped considering the book is more for the common man. People who may have an interest in astrophysics and cosmology and know the ins and outs of it briefly may enjoy this book.
Very quick but still complicated book. I learned quite a bit more about the early universe and CMBR, which was very insightful. Also there were some subjects that would require more reading to understand. But this was very to the point and overall well written in my opinion. I prefer Carlo Rovelli’s writing style compared but still recommend to anyone who’s interested in the cosmos.
A short and understandable explanation of cosmology, this is intended for a semi-informed lay person. If you have never taken a physics class this isn’t for you. But if you’ve never taken a physics class I’m not sure why you’d pick it up. I’ve been fascinated by physics and cosmology forever and I found this to be ab excellent primer that ties in almost all current research and theories about what happened in the nanoseconds after the Big Bang and more importantly how we can be confident about it. I read it in a few hours on the beach.
For all that’s been written about the Big Bang, this astonishingly big “little book” bottom lines it all. With no fluff, no math, not an unnecessary word or thought, it flows and fascinates. Rothman is a cosmological treasure.
A deceptively simple read, enlighten by humorous touches. While I did eventually get lost it was not until the final chapters, and the author convinced me I had a lot of intelligent company in my befuddled state.
I really enjoy Carlo Rovelli’s books and generally say that I only understand perhaps half of what he says—but I’m fascinated by that half. I’m not sure I understood even half of this one, but I love being able to “get” even a little of what goes on in modern physics.
An grownup version of the Big Bang. The first book on this topic (of the many that I've read) that has explained in sufficient detail the reasoning behind the proportions of the elements and several other topics that are usually glossed over. There are priceless lines about the process cosmologists use that brings it all down to earth (where it belongs) - "Physicists think first about particles, then springs, then waves ... ." And there is skepticism about some sacred cows, most notably inflation. I don't know this is the best version I've read - "We have no idea" sets a pretty high bar, but then again covers much more ground, but it is AWESOME.
