This is my 3rd book I’ve read by Pastor SJR. It has a lot of good nuggets. It is written like she is speaking directly to you in her conversational style. I think I’ll take a break from her books because I feel her messages are starting to be repetitive and it’s hard to not question whether her overcoming is due to her hard work and God’s faithfulness or having generational resources that make hard things easier. I’m disappointed because the marketing was so grand for this book but I don’t feel I learned anything new even though I wanted to.
I think this is a decent book for those who are new to discovering themselves and a good gateway into beginning to learn and discover the power within you. If you’ve been studying this awhile you may not learn anything new but you will be encouraged.
Power Moves is a very in-depth read concerning how to control the power God placed inside of you.
It contains examples from Sarah's life and the things she learned. There are insights from scripture to solidify your journey. Her application at the end of each chapter has marinate, active, and prayer sections.
This book when applied, could allow God to work a positive change in your life.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and voluntarily chose to review it. A positive review is not required.
This book was everything I needed to get the wheels of life turning again. I have been going through a rough season and this put a lot of things in perspective for me. I can’t wait to use my key points for the turn around to make my POWER MOVES. 🎉
I REALLY really REALLLLY enjoyed this book. I already love SJR down!!! She dropped so many good gems in this book. So many great keynotes and I loved how SJR made it so personable but yet still gems for the reader to pick up on. I could’ve finished this book in one day but it was just SO MUCH (in a good way) that I wanted to take it in doses. Power Moves is a great read about centering yourself, being true to yourself, trying to find yourself, and more. Would def recommend.
This was another good book from the exceptionally gifted Mrs. Sarah Jakes Roberts. Power Moves focused on sitting with yourself, reflecting, and centering yourself through wisdom and God. Enjoyed it.
Those dates are correct, started in 2024 nd finished a year and a month later and I’m so glad I did.
This book is different for me because I went through a rough patch while reading this in a lot of areas of my life.
I would read this over the months and I mostly read it in batches bc I wanted to soak in the lessons she would write about and it ended up truly helping me see the power that already lies within me through the Holy Spirit AND see how power does move and how to make those power movesssss!
A blessing in my life and I will forever cherish this book. 5/5! I encourage everyone who reads this to not binge this but take inventory in your life as you read it and see how the power within you unfolds ! Much love💛💛💛
Really enjoyed listening to this and it gave me alot of insight on how I have been really disconnected from God and his teachings. We think power is in status when in reality it comes from God. I hope that I can use this book as a stepping stone to overcome the fear and the challenges that show up in my life.
I've seen SJR in person, but this is the first time I've read her book. Her message is just as powerful on the page! I enjoyed the prompts at the end of each chapter and the examples from her own life.
Sarah will always be one of my favorites when it comes to explaining life and everything in it as plain as I need to understand and including biblical principles. I can relate to her not only as a woman but also as a mother. she is phenomenal and i’m excited about what will be next
It is usually hard for me to get into motivational books, but I have to say this one is very good and speaks to where I am in my life right now. I can’t put it down, I’m truly enjoying this book
“The main takeaway is that in order to reclaim your power, you first need to identify the areas of your life where you feel drained or powerless. After doing this, you can identify the dysfunctional behavioral systems and relationships that contribute to your feelings of powerlessness. Your task now is to update them to programs that serve your true greatness.”
“The next keys to stepping into your power involve embracing faith and connection with the divine, pushing past your comfort zone, aligning your actions with your desires, knowing they're rooted in divine purpose, and finding balance through rest.”
I really liked her on the Mel Robbins podcast and her book on being safe is good but this book just made me mad. First, she doesn’t give credit where credit is due talking about IFS she acts as if she had that idea. Then she just gets down right almost self righteous. Plus her use of overused bible verses is annoying—find something people haven’t heard.
I started listening to this audiobook at a point of reflection for me. The amount of times I had to pause and run and get my journal was A LOT. It got me thinking about all the ways that power can move and shift....and also ways i can center myself in the ebbs and flows. This is one of those that will get a second and third listens as I grow my faith. Great read.
Too much words repetition. Also, I’m not even sure what message she’s trying to relay. Everything seems out of place. She discussing herself way too much.
In "Power Moves: Ignite Your Confidence and Become a Force," Sarah Jakes Roberts delves into the concept of personal power and how it can be reclaimed and sustained in the face of life's challenges. The essence of the book revolves around the idea that true power doesn't stem from external achievements or superficial markers of success but rather from tapping into one's inner potential and authentic self. Roberts begins by acknowledging how easily our sense of power can be stripped away, leading to feelings of vulnerability and powerlessness. She argues that true power is not about titles or possessions but about realizing and harnessing one's inherent potential.
Roberts emphasizes that reclaiming power is an act of defiance against forces that seek to contain us. She encourages readers to confront the memories, ideologies, fears, and oppressions that drain their energy and limit their power. By facing these challenges head-on, individuals can begin to return to their true selves. She warns against allowing external validation to rob one of uniqueness, creativity, and ambition, advocating instead for a life led by truth and radical honesty. According to Roberts, creating space for authenticity allows the fullness of divine goodness to enter one's life.
To fully reclaim power, Roberts suggests identifying the areas where power is being drained. She uses the metaphor of a parking lot, where different aspects of life are represented by various vehicles, some running smoothly and others sputtering. Power is often unevenly distributed, and merely avoiding power-depleted roles won't solve the problem. The solution lies in fulfilling core obligations to oneself, such as self-care and spiritual nourishment. Roberts points out that people often neglect their own needs to avoid disappointing others, but true power comes from advocating for oneself.
Breaking free from draining relationships and dynamics is crucial. Roberts describes such bonds as hostage situations where one's authenticity is compromised. She stresses that the only way to lose power is by not believing in one's own power in the first place. Drawing on the story of Adam and Eve, she illustrates how power can be lost through deception and self-doubt. She urges readers to recognize the small, insidious ways they relinquish power daily by disqualifying themselves from pursuing their true desires.
Roberts also discusses the importance of updating behavioral systems to align with one's core values and highest potential. She compares outdated systems to a broke college student subsisting on ramen noodles – inadequate and unsustainable. She explains that trauma often constructs comfort zones designed to protect from past hurts but ultimately hinder growth. By recognizing and updating these systems, individuals can break free from limiting patterns and move toward their true potential.
Faith plays a significant role in reclaiming power. Roberts advocates for embracing the belief that one is unconditionally loved and supported by a higher power. She suggests that faith can transform thought patterns and propel individuals toward growth and fulfillment. She encourages readers to connect with the divine through simple, open-hearted desire and to create dedicated moments for spiritual practices. By doing so, they can recognize divine guidance and move beyond their comfort zones with confidence.
Rest is another crucial aspect of power. Roberts argues that society's distorted view of power often leads to burnout and stress. True power, she says, is not about outperforming others but about being present and adaptable. She highlights the importance of rest and support, citing the example of God resting on the seventh day of creation. She urges readers to define power based on their own needs and to recognize when to push through and when to rest. By doing so, they can preserve their power and peace.
In conclusion, "Power Moves" by Sarah Jakes Roberts provides a comprehensive guide to reclaiming and sustaining personal power. Roberts emphasizes the importance of authenticity, self-care, and spiritual connection in achieving true power. By identifying and addressing power drains, updating behavioral systems, embracing faith, and finding balance through rest, individuals can move through life with grace, wisdom, and inner strength. The book encourages readers to step into their full power and become a force for good in their own lives and the lives of others.
WIP - Whoever or whatever has left you disempowered, powerlessness is not a state you need to accept permanently. 3 stars?
Notes: - Don't let people-pleasing steal your uniqueness. Don't let rejection steal your creativity. Don’t let fear steal your ambition. - Imagine you're standing in a vast parking lot, each space reserved for an area of your life – one spot for leadership, another for friendship, another for finances, and so on. As you watch, vehicles begin filling the spaces. Every time you move between the various responsibilities and roles of your life, you step into a different vehicle. Some run smoothly and on a full tank. Others sputter and stall, losing gas. Power is rarely distributed evenly across all areas of our lives. The fact that one vehicle is running on fumes doesn't necessarily mean the others are, too. But simply avoiding those power-depleted roles won't solve your problems - Ultimately, the only way you can lose your power is by not believing you possessed it in the first place. - consider the possibility that you’re avoiding threats that may actually be harmless - until you have behavioral systems in place to support those visions, they cannot manifest into reality - "I feel tired, overwhelmed, or confused." VS "I need rest and support."
Quotes: - “Your power is not going to come from an opportunity, position, or person.” - “Life is a messy job. You get to decide whether you allow that mess to help you or bury you.”
If you’re looking to read motivational quotes to help better yourself and choose power over fear these books will help!
“Self-esteem = seeing yourself as a flawed person, and still holding yourself in high regard.”
“Confidence is not about being flawless.”
“You can be powerful without being perfect.”
“Each day grants us another opportunity to get closer to reflecting God's image. It doesn't matter what decisions you made yesterday. If you stay alive for one minute past this moment, that's one minute that can be used to bear God's image and reflect His heart to every person you encounter.”
“Sometimes we confuse familiarity with confidence and don’t want to change because we're afraid that we'll fail. Trust me when I say this: you work wherever God sends you. Are you going to be nervous and afraid? Yup! Are you going to fail? Prolly so.”
______________________________________________ It was great to read about how you can’t let your fear get in the way of you becoming who God wants you to be. You have to be willing to be uncomfortable in order to make progress.
These quotes and mindsets can help in any aspect of your life which you may feel needs some sort of change to better yourself and help others.
5/5 ⭐️s - Power Moves moved me! My favorite chapter was Fearless. SJR talks about how we have to be brave enough to make mistakes and fail. How do we learn lessons and become experts in what we set out to do? It is in our failures that we learn to be powerful.
“God can’t multiply what we won’t sacrifice.” This is our fear of not taking risks.
I’m reminded of the cartoon of Jesus and the little girl. Jesus is holding his hand out for the little girl to give up the small teddy bear in exchange for the bigger teddy bear. She is scared to release because she is fearful she won’t have anything. It is just like us. We won’t trust Jesus to multiply our little for more.
We possess the power (moves) before we were born and yet we have allowed our experiences to hold us back from living powerful in Jesus. We have to learn to access the power within so we can move forward.
A must-read for the person who is looking for a new perspective in how we have a better understanding of the power we possess.
This felt like a fresh take on self-empowerment, with Sarah Jakes Roberts framing power as something we already have rather than something we need to hustle for. She compares us to an electrical force, always capable, but sometimes disconnected or drained.
One of my favorite moments was her comparison to a car that has run out of gas. The car still has power, it just cannot move forward without fuel. That metaphor really stuck with me and felt relatable in seasons where burnout sneaks in quietly.
Faith plays a big role throughout the book since Sarah and her husband serve in ministry, so there are frequent references to God’s power woven into the message. If that is not your thing, it may not be a good fit. Overall, I enjoyed her perspective and closed the book feeling encouraged and a little more energized heading into my next chapter.
I am always nervous to read inspirational books because I find that they seem to always find me when I need them. Sarah’s message within this book was for ME. Sarah takes you as the reader on a journey of self reflection. Recognizing how we diminish our power and a lot of times we don’t even realize it. When we are so worried about what people think about us, second guessing our own institution, being afraid to change from something comfortable to something that may be better for you but your afraid because you don’t want to leave your comfort. Sarah really breaks down by trusting in God completely, this will lead to you being your authentic self. Which then will allow you to believe in yourself. We don’t have to dim who we are to fit someone else’s image of us. Also learning how to marinate on things before you make a decision. Also pray for what you want. Be clear. Stop saying you can’t. Project CAN statements. We will not win everything, you won’t get every yes but did you learn the lesson in the situation before you? This is a book that may put things into perspective, but also a book that will give you the want to be better for YOURSELF. As long as your breathing, you can learn and grow.
I just finished reading Power Moves by Sarah Jakes Roberts. As a follower of Mrs. Roberts, I find her messages empowering, revolutionary, and evolving. This book expertly balances self-help, spiritual health, and deep personal reflection. It provided me with language for life experiences I had previously only reacted to emotionally. I was empowered by the meaningful language that addresses vulnerable places while also serving as a gateway to growth. The insights on power—how it’s given, obtained, and operated—are particularly impactful. I finished this book in a day and a half, and it’s one I’ll revisit over time. I highly recommend it!
I'm a supporter of Pastor Sarah Jakes Roberts! And it took me four days to read this book. If I didn't have to work I could have read it in one day. I was excited about this read. Pastor Sarah gives insight into tapping into your power. I was able to speak out loud about things I need to work on and not be disappointed in myself but see how I can change and grow in the areas of my life that need attention. Even though I'm finished reading the book I'll constantly use it to refresh my mind. If you are looking to make a change in your life I recommend you read Power Moves. It's a lifesaver.
“But power is not about doing more to exert yourself. It is trusting that the moments when you don’t feel like you’re doing anything powerful at all may be the moments you are growing the most.”
I enjoyed the FLOW of this book and how Paster Sarah Jake’s Roberts has a flip the switch section after each chapter to reflect and put into action some concepts throughout the book.
If you are looking for a book that is deep in scripture, this might not be the best fit, but overall, I enjoyed her message.
