Gospeler: Turning Darkness into Light One Conversation at a Time

Rate this book
Do you want to share your faith more easily and naturally? Willie Robertson of Duck Dynasty says that if you can tell someone about your spouse, kids, friends, school, pets, and hobbies, you know how to talk about the most important thing in your life, your Lord! Could you share the gospel with another person? Would you know where to start? Do you even know what the gospel is? It's the Good News of Jesus, and a gospeler is simply someone who shares it with others. Willie Robertson writes about his story of faith, which came about in large part because a stranger went out of his way—as well as his comfort zone—to have a spiritual conversation with Willie's father, Phil. And from that story, he tells readers how they, too, can talk about Jesus with their family, friends, neighbors, and even people they meet along the way. Gospeler will help Being a gospeler is not complicated. And the more you share Jesus, the easier it gets. Maybe you believe other people are better at sharing their faith and it is not your gift. Maybe you think you don't know the Bible well enough. Or you might say you haven't figured it all out yourself, so you aren’t equipped to help anyone else. Whatever may be holding you back will be covered in this book, giving you the inspiration, guidance, and encouragement you need. When the gospel is heard, accepted, and responded to, it's not just a cool story, it is a game-changer. And it can spread across the world—starting with one conversation you have with another. In addition to this book, an accompanying 64-page booklet is available to share with others.

What is it and how do you say it? GOSPELER

Let’s take the questions in reverse order. The word rhymes with teller and it means the same: one who tells the story of the gospel of Christ. In Christian circles we sometimes call this witnessing, evangelism, missions, sharing my faith, or some other phrase that strikes fear in the hearts of most faithful believers.

What’s the big deal with sharing the gospel? Why is it so difficult for most folks to talk about? Author, Willie Robertson, of Duck Dynasty fame, opens his life and heart on these pages to show readers how scripture and every day life can bring friends, family and the grocery store clerk to a place where they meet Jesus and enter into a life saving relationship with Him.

Willie doesn’t rely on gimmicks. He uses scripture. Becoming a GOSPELER isn’t a choice, if you’re a believer, it’s a command: GO - PREACH - BAPTIZE. Jesus told us to do it. We need to obey. The book contains many stories about Willie’s family and their journey of faith. He gives us a look at individual situations, different perspectives, people, places and relationships. You’re sure to find something that will feel comfortable to your needs.

Two of my favorite elements from the book are a chart that breaks down the process of what it means to confront sin, repent, accept Christ as Lord, get baptized and continue forward and a story where Willie is asked about the gospel in the middle of the night. It’s 20 degrees, the middle of nowhere on a cattle farm and after the conversation has ended, the man involved wants to be baptized. The only water available is the cow pond. I’ll leave the details for you to read in the book but suffice it to say that it’s not blue water, it’s well below freezing and the sun ain’t up!

Lots of folksy stories that include the Robertson family and real encounters with people who have met Jesus because of the GOSPELER lifestyle they live. More importantly, the foundation is scripture📚

My 2 ⭐️ rating doesn’t mean that this book is terrible. It may be beneficial to others out there. I just felt that it told me nothing new & could have easily been something posted on a blog or discussed on a podcast instead.

Seems a bit unfair to give this book 3 stars but I think my expectations going into this book were vastly different than what the book actually was and therefore it was just okay to me. It’s mainly a bunch of stories that very simply share the gospel across a variety of different people with various backgrounds. It’s not revolutionary or anything new, which is where I felt it lacked. I think it leaned too deeply into the “sharing the Gospel is easy” storyline and never asked too much of the readers which is a shame. The Gospel is easy but it’s also complex and hard and can be something you have to wrestle with which are some things I think we missed out on.

Would definitely read again and recommend this book to others! Though not a “deep” theological book by the judgement of other reviewers, I thoroughly enjoyed the encouragement, joyful stories, and reminders of the true importance of the Gospel. It doesn’t have to be complex—the Gospel is a simple truth.
Remember, before you assume someone knows the Lord or has placed their hope in Him, “you never know ‘til you ask, right?”

So good!

“Paul said in Romans 1:16, ‘For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.’ The Gospel has the power, not us. We just have to share it. All the work has been done. We simply tell the story.”

So many good nuggets in this book! I picked up this book after listening to an episode of the Relatable podcast where Allie Beth Stuckey was interviewing Willie Robertson. He was talking about this book he wrote about being a Gospeler: Turning Darkness into Light One Conversation at a Time.

I need to do a better job of taking action to improve our society, and that begins with listening to people and pointing them to Jesus.

Really good book! Gave it three stars because I went in hoping for some new insight and that’s not really what I got out of it. Rather than a book that taught me, it more encouraged. The author does a cool job of presenting scripture and describing it but instead of going deep into the meaning and interpretations, he simply shares stories of these truths becoming a reality. Though not what I expected, it was very encouraging reading about the gospel moving through lives.

I’ve never seen even a minute of the Duck Dynasty tv series, but was drawn to the topic. I listened to the audiobook and got the the Kindle after listening to it so that I can re-read parts of it. I’ve never ever felt comfortable sharing my faith and it’s the most important thing about/to me, so I’d like some help in that area. If he did a master class, I’d sign up, but this is a great start. I forever wonder why the church doesn’t focus more on teaching it’s members to share their faith, at least mine never have. We need more of this. It’s important. He’s got amazing stories, funny and touching, and very fun to listen to him read it.

Several good stories about Willie’s experience in soul winning. He does give some info about his methodology. But I think it missed the mark touted on the back cover of imparting the confidence to become a gospeler. I did order his companion handbook “Sharing Jesus with confidence” that may be more actionable. Though I think it has more to do with Courage than Confidence. And there may be no better tool for building courage than jumping in and doing it.

My take-aways/thoughts:
Based on my reading, here is what I gathered as Willie’s process for sharing the gospel:

Step 1 - Ask questions - Do you have a faith? When / where did it start? What happens when we die? Is there a God? Jesus? How's it going? Always get their story first. Listen, make notes of key points from their story. Before sharing the gospel they need to see their problem. No script, go where their story leads, with Jesus as the answer. When they see they need help they will be open to a solution.

Step 2 - Gal 5:19-24 Which one are you? What would your spouse, kids, friends, etc say? Always assume they have no knowledge of the Bible. Explain the terms. The difference in the two lives - it's Obvious! Are they unsure which side they are on? No way. Not an option. Choose! or you'll never make it.

Step 3 - Tell them about Jesus! 1 Cor 15:3 We've been listening to what they feel is important. Now the scripture tells them what should be first importance in our lives. Always make sure when sharing the gospel, that it's a complete commitment. Full Surrender! One truth!

Step 4 - Acts 2:38 Baptism. Don't push baptism, let them ask. And when they do, don't argue, debate, judge.

STEP 5 - Romans 6:1-4 what faith really looks like.

When the message reaches the right soil, it is powerful. It does not require persuasion, just communication. And from there it can spread by multiplication. In my life the focus should be:
1> Study. Spend time in the Word to be comfortable and confident in sharing the gospel.
2> Making Christ visible to others in my daily life. Using the name of Jesus more in conversation. Speaking of blessings in my life and others. Giving God credit for the good things.
3> Recognizing opportunities. See every interaction as an opportunity to share my faith, or encourage.
4> Developing passion. What we have to share is the greatest light in a dark world! How selfish it is to not share it with others.
5> Be more intentional about outreach. We must be actively involved in a specific effort to obey the great commission. Like the seven. Perhaps a First Step room, to answer spiritual questions, help others take steps toward conversion, or to learn how to share their faith.
6> We must go out to the broken people, to help start a new legacy in someone's life. We must get our hands dirty and plunge into messy, uncomfortable situations.
7> Recognizing the power of the Spirit to fill in my gaps. Regardless of how my sin can make me feel like a failure sometimes, I must remember that I have been filled with the Holy Spirit! He is alive in me!
8> Pray daily for help in all of these areas.

My Notes:
p. ix We cannot neglect the power of the gospel and sharing it with others.

p9 Willie grew up watching their parents witness to many people at their dinner table.

p10 Phil still grabs his Bible almost every time Willie is there and reads passages out loud with the same wonder and passion as if he were reading it for the first time.

p15 Many people speak of spreading the gospel around the world but have never talked to their neighbor. About anything! Opportunity is everywhere.

p16 Bill Smith knew that his role was only to be the messenger. That God was responsible for what the message could do in Phil. The seed had been planted. It's not my job to make it grow. Plant the seed!

p18 More of Phil's zeal. Willie witnessed countless people, over and over, from all walks of life, going to the river by their house to be baptized after praying with Phil.

p26 You never know what gospel genealogy may be getting started when you take that chance and share God's plan to save His creation. In Phil's story, Bill planted the seed, impact is millions.

p28 The name Jesus - brought every day in Willie's family. As well as those Jesus hung out with. "I read about him over and over."

p31 God has placed people in my circle. It's my job to plant the seed in them. No excuses. "Not my gift" "Others are better at it" "I don't know the Bible well enough" Get over it. It's about having courage to do hard things. Until they're no longer hard.

p32 We tell others about our spouse, our kids, our grandkids, hobbies, etc. We can do the same with the gospel. And we're only called to do the sharing part!

p35 Let's learn to be great seed-spreaders. It will be eternity-changing for someone!

p44 Willie realized that his desire to share Jesus was his calling to be a disciple and student of the gospel.

p51 Peter knew that to not share the gospel with people would be incredibly selfish.

p52 Telling others about Jesus is not just part of the deal, it's the whole deal. It's the very thing that helps you keep your faith at the top of your priority list.

p53 Jesus' first and last instruction to Peter was the same - Go Make Disciples.

p55 When we share Christ we strengthen our own faith, and straighten our own walk.

p63 What Willie draws when sharing the gospel.

p64 STEP 1: Ask questions - Do you have a faith? When / where did it start? How's it going?

p67 Always get their story first. Before sharing the gospel they need to see their problem.

p71 No script, go where their story leads, with Jesus as the answer. When they see they need help they will be open to a solution.

p74 "If you were on trial and the judge's son was your defense attorney, you would feel pretty good about your chances!"

p75 UNASHAMED! The work is done. The power is there. People are LOOKING for it! Get over your fears. Ask questions. Listen to their stories. Hear the brokenness, the search for something meaningful. Provide a caring ear.

p76 The gospel is the answer to EVERY sin problem. Start Uncomfortable Conversations!

p78 STEP 1: Do you have a faith? What happens when we die? Is there a God? Jesus? Listen, make notes of key points from their story.

p79 Whether their story is weird, common, the answer is always he gospel. After their story...
STEP 2: Gal 5:19-24

p80 Which one are you? What would you spouse, kids, friends, etc say? Always assume they have no knowledge of the Bible. Explain the terms. The difference in the two lives - it's Obvious!

p81 Unsure? No way. Not an option. Choose! or you'll never make it.

p88 As you listen to their stories, listen for how they view God. Jesus. the church. What they've been through?

p90 STEP 3: Tell them about Jesus! 1 Cor 15:3

p93 We've been listening to what they feel is important. Now the scripture tells them what should be first importance in our lives.

p95 Yes, our role is only to plant the seed. But we never know when the soil will be ready. Sometimes we must keep sowing the same soil!

p100 We must overcome our fear to share. Trust in God's power. And in God's protection. Ane keep telling them per 1 Cor 15.

p108 Often times we must accept that we can only sow seed, not harvest. Plant and WAIT.

p121 Always make sure when sharing the gospel, that it's a complete commitment. Full Surrender! One truth!

p128 STEP 4: Acts 2:38 Baptism.

p129 Don't push baptism, let them ask. And when they do, don't argue, debate, judge.

p130 STEP 5: Romans 6:1-4 what faith really looks like.

p138 Speak of Jesus more every day! More opportunities and results will come.

p150 The Holy Spirit is ACTIVE in our lives.

p155 We are broken. We are sinful. But we are still FULL OF THE SPIRIT. Rom 5:1-5

p166 Many gifts in the church. But EVERYONE is called to spread the gospel. 2 Cor 5:20 we are Christ's ambassadors, God speaking through us.

p167 No initiative on earth has ever lasted longer the Christianity. That's the Holy Spirit!

p175 Gamaliel was right! "if it is from God you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God." We are still talking about it today!

p177 Focus more on saving the lost than keeping the saved happy. No one can stand against a man with the Spirit.

p179 Like Phillip - ask questions! Don't assume people know! Ask better questions. Specific.

p180 We must study to be prepared to share w/ others. Like Peter, Phillip, Steven, Paul.

p182 How can we be shy when we have the greatest gift in the world to offer? We must be obedient to have the conversation.

p186 We may not verbally deny Jesus, but at times our actions can sure look as if we don't know him.

p191 We must go out to the broken people, to help start a new legacy in someone's life.

p193 Don't give up on certain people. Sow the seed again. And again. And again.

p195 Get out there, into the darkness with your light!

p197 And if the world hates us? Great! Means we're on the right track. John 15:18-19 We were chosen out of the world for it.

p199 Be more intentional about outreach. The seven.

p200 Have a First Step room, >answer spiritual questions >take step to conversion >learn how to share faith. A specific effort to obey the great commission.

p201 The Holy Spirit will fill in the gaps. Our words may not be perfect, but the spirit reaches the heart.

p203 Become one KNOWN for being a gospeler.

I was listening to Phil Robertson's Unashamed podcast when they had Willie Robertson on talking about his latest book, Gospeler. It's a book about sharing your faith. I love Willie's approach. His book is plain spoken and easy to understand. It's a no nonsense guide to evangelism, with plenty of real world stories, that are everything from humorous to downright touching. I got this book just before vacation and more than once found myself looking like a fool with tears running down my face—happy tears seeing the goodness of God at work in the stories shared here. I am seriously considering offering this book as a book study at my church, and trying to form a team of Gospelers. This is a great book that the church today really needs.

4.7 ⭐️ Though I loved this book, my best piece of advice is to get a hard copy, and a journal and pen/ highlighter. There is so many words of advice he gives, and places in scripture to learn/ share; it’s Best to write down as you go. It’s so helpful to read this book, and “hear” him reading it. I love that he goes into actual stores of how what he does works. I do wish there was a little more direction and scenarios of how to draw people in and how to share yourself. More of a laid out how too! Overall great read and very helpful

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Willie Robertson’s "Gospeller" is a five-star gem that equips and inspires believers to share their faith with authenticity and confidence. Drawing from his personal journey and the transformative power of the gospel, Robertson masterfully blends storytelling with practical advice, making it a must-read for anyone looking to deepen their evangelistic efforts.

Robertson's premise is beautifully simple yet profound: if you can talk about your everyday life, you can talk about Jesus. This book demystifies evangelism, reframing it from a daunting task into a natural, heartfelt conversation. The biblical truth that shines through is reminiscent of Jesus’ own words in Matthew 28:19, urging His followers to "go and make disciples of all nations." Robertson’s approach mirrors this Great Commission, emphasizing that sharing the gospel is about spreading love and hope, not merely preaching.

One of the most compelling aspects of "Gospeller" is Robertson's recounting of his father's conversion story, a powerful testament to the impact one conversation can have. This narrative not only serves as a catalyst for the book but also as a poignant reminder of God’s relentless pursuit of every soul, echoing the parable of the lost sheep in Luke 15:4-7. Just as the shepherd rejoices over finding one lost sheep, Robertson celebrates each opportunity to share the Good News, encouraging readers to do the same.

The book is practical and accessible, addressing common fears and misconceptions about evangelism. Robertson assures readers that they don't need to have all the answers or a perfect knowledge of the Bible to be effective. Instead, he points to the Apostle Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 2:1-5, where Paul admits coming "in weakness with great fear and trembling," relying not on eloquence but on the Spirit’s power. This humble approach removes the pressure of perfection and emphasizes reliance on God's guidance.

"Gospeller" also teaches that persistence in sharing the gospel reflects Jesus’ unwavering love for humanity. As Robertson notes, Jesus never gives up on us, and we are called to mirror that persistence. This echoes Galatians 6:9, which encourages believers to "not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

In essence, "Gospeller" is more than a book—it’s a call to action. Robertson's heartfelt encouragement, combined with scriptural truths, empowers readers to embrace their role as gospelers, transforming everyday interactions into opportunities for spreading the love of Christ. By the end of this transformative read, you’ll be inspired to plant seeds of faith wherever you go, confident that God will nurture and grow them in His perfect time.

This guy really knows how to share the Gospel. Inspiring.

This was a really good books about sharing the Gospel, and is the 2nd really good book I have read from this family. Happy Happy Happy by Phil Robertson was really good as well. The books they put out are well crafted, well thought out, and make their points clearly. They are not celebrity clip and paste jobs.

Willie is a born salesman and his life’s passion is to tell people about the Gospel. He shows his very non judgmental way of doing so, asking questions, and then pointing to scriptures and letting people decide for themselves. He apparently has brought many, many people to salvation and I can see how.

He makes the point that making disciples is the number one goal of Christians. Most people consider the calling of the seven men in Acts to be the model for deacons, and deacons are to serve. But he points out we don’t see the seven serving. The only thing we hear about them doing is evangelizing. The only two that are named, Stephen and Philip, are immediately seen evangelizing. Stephen, which resulted in his death, and Philip to the Ethiopian eunuch. Robertson then connects this event to the 70 million Ethiopians who are now Christians.

I highly recommend this book if you are stuck and wondering what you are supposed to be doing with what you hear in church each week. I think I will buy a few copies for my friends.

Willie is very good a writing and easy to stay focused along with. He demonstrated his life and taught his way and how he shares the Gospel of Christ with others. He looks at his family history of how he became a believer and how others have been influenced by him.

Willie shares the Gospel typically by using the fruits of the spirits in Galatians 5. He asks if there life is reflecting of it. One thing I took away from this is he reads scripture while sharing the Gospel to all. He uses other passages such as 1 Corinthians 15, Acts 2, Roman Road verses, and more. Many have listened to his talk with scripture and life and decided they needed Jesus.

Willie also let’s them talk. He emphasized being a listener. Getting to know there story can help you relate and may help you in what to talk about. But listen and let them open up.

The reason I give this book a 3 star rating is due to the theology of Willie. It appears he has aligned Salvation with Baptism, when in reality they are different. Baptism is not Salvation, but rather a profession of your Salvation. Baptism does not determine if you go to a Heaven, rather Salvation does.
I would be curious to hear the the full theology of his beliefs. It would seem as if having to be baptized as salvation would be a works based faith.

I happened to love this book and part of what I loved was the simple way it read. Yes, I have been in church for years and can understand concepts for myself on a more complex level. However, for anyone who is lacking confidence in sharing the gospel and your love for the Bible and Jesus this is a great help and confidence booster. I’m a nurse; sometimes I have to google my thought that I understand in my nurse brain so a regular person can understand it. Sometimes we get too intent on showing how much we know when sometimes people just need to start very simply. People who aren’t saved yet don’t need to hear all the theological know how you got. So, I appreciated this back to basics how to on sharing the gospel. And Willie is a great storyteller. I enjoyed hearing his stories about his experiences and it made me feel enthusiastic about sharing.

Practical! Understandable! Biblical!

I liked the relatable and honest way that Willie shared his experience in learning to love sharing his faith. The inherent suggestion to the reader was to relate their own life and experience to the call of Christ to “Go.” Their story would meet others at their own point of need.
I would recommend this book to businessmen and women. They can grow the church simply by sharing their own stories with people they relate to daily! Certainly if the church is going experience growth or even Revival, believers in the pews will have to get busy knowing and sharing their stories! God will certainly bless that activity!

I have searched and read long and hard for a book on evangelism that both challenges us to live out what the Bible says, yet says it in such a way that does not lead to guilt and shame or is said in a prideful manner by the author. This is EXACTLY what I have hoped for in such a book. It gave some practical advice while being thoroughly saturated with Scripture references and actual testimonies of the author’s experiences. It opens your eyes that evangelism is something we are all called to do and makes it more simple to think about and reminds us that it is dependent on the Spirit to work. Highly recommend this for those hoping to learn more about evangelism.

Whenever I read a book like this, I’m always looking for real, practical examples that go beyond just basic ideas or hype talk. Gospeler really delivers on that. Willie Robertson uses scripture and stories from his own life in a down-to-earth, relatable way, even sharing some of the Bible verses he likes to use when talking about his faith. Instead of just offering surface-level talk, he shows personal examples of what it looks like to genuinely live it out and share it with others. The whole book feels honest, encouraging, and easy to connect with; especially if you’re wanting to grow more confident in sharing your faith.

As others have noted, this is a good book but a bit lacking in the examples department. I liked the book a lot, and it's a great start to learning how to share your faith with others. I'll likely listen to it again. Perhaps I'll change my rating after another listen. Maybe the print form would change my perspective. I'll have to listen closer and take notes the next time.

Willie offers an excellent foundation from which to begin. I hope I will one day be convinced to share my faith with others as he and his family did in other forums.

I’ve been a HUGE fan of Duck Dynasty for years, and I didn’t think I could love anything about them anymore… until this book. Willie did an amazing job of making our hope in Jesus conservational. I think my favorite part of this book was the last few pages; everyone is saying MAGA, but “when we try to return to something we created, rather than the Creator, we are simply focusing on the imperfect as opposed to the Perfect.” Man that quote sent chills down my spine.

This book will not disappoint you!

I thought that this book was very captivating and well written. For years my wife and I have supported Willie and all the things he and his family have stood for. We are also huge Duck Dynasty fans Lol. I think what made this book so powerful is that Willie uses real life scenarios for how he shares the Gospel with all sorts of people. I strongly suggest to give this a read if you are curious/new to faith, or if you are trying to master your delivery of the Gospel in any scenario with any type of person. I certainly have gained confidence in my sharing of the Gospel after reading this book!
