Ericka Scott is a multi-published, bestselling author of seductive suspense. She's written stories for as long as she can remember and reads anything under the sun (including the back of cereal boxes in a pinch). She got hooked on romantic suspense in her college days, when reading anything but a textbook was a guilty pleasure. Now, when she’s not chauffeuring children around, wishing she had more than 24 hours in a day, or lurking at the library, she’s spinning her own web of fantasy and penning tales of seduction and suspense. She currently lives in Southern California with her husband and three children.
Wow. This was a short read but it was a chilly one! Ms. Scott has a way of writing a tone throughout the story that gives a foreboding feeling. The old house, small town and the eerie feeling that something will come up and get you creeps in every corner.
In short, Karen Ferguson is heiress to a cosmetics fortune due to a trust fund her grandmother left her. She's finally found the one man to steal her heart and love her for her who wants to start a family after she's finished college. From the way the story unfolds, Karen and her husband Tony seem like any married couple although Karen at times tip toes around making sure she doesn't upset Tony. When word comes that Tony's mother has died, things take a change as they have to deal with the house that was left in his name and to be placed on the market for selling. Karen gets an idea to use her saved money to surprise Tony by going to his old town and fixing up the place. What she finds there reveals more than she anticipated.
There's a twist at the end that's hinted very subtly but the way things unfold and how they come to light is very interesting. I loved reading on to find out what happened and the journey became even more chilling as the end was revealed. This is one of those stories that you know could happen in real life and it makes you really question, as the tagline says, "if you really know the people you love".
A short yet highly enjoyable read. I recommend this to psychological horror and interracial fans. It's great to see IR reach in more genres than just romance and I hope to see more like this from the author in the near future.
