Oscar Pill #2

Unfortunately, everything I have to say will be similar to my opinion on the first book. I didn’t particularly enjoy it and I had given it 2.5 stars and I will give the same rating to the second book. I had bought this book after meeting the author (it was really a wonderful moment) but I am still not convinced about the story. I was bored for most of the novel because everything is too predictable and I feel like this novel is for a very young audience only. Some books are intended for the same public with very young characters but can be read with pleasure even when you are an adult (ex: Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, His Dark Materials, etc.). Here, I felt like I was way too old to read this during the whole time I was reading it.

I had forgotten most of the supporting characters, which was a bit annoying. Oscar is still cringe-worthy, he is just breaking the rules all the time and I feel like his goal in life is to do everything he is not supposed to. The worst is that he doesn’t understand when people tell him they don’t trust him. I thought his sister was cute and moving at first but now I feel like she is some huge parody of Luna from Harry Potter. She is really tiring and unable to say a single sentence that makes sense.

As I said for the first book, I didn’t like the concept. To sum it up, the “nice guys” in the story are called the Medicus and the “bad guys” the Pathologus. The Pathologus travel to the human body to infect it with illness and to destroy it, the Medicus exist to save these body. I still felt like I was hearing a doctor explaining his job to a child between 3 and 5 years old, and he might as well call the “Medicus” doctors and the “Pathologus”, illnesses. The universes Oscar travels to are parts of the human body and it is a bit too concrete to make me travel to a new world.

Furthermore, I’ve had a huge problem with this book. He travels into a body and lands in the lungs where he meets King Eole then in the heart where he meets Queen Mitra. But since he is traveling to only one body, does that mean that the King and Queen only exist in this body? Or does it mean everyone has the same exact King and Queen in their bodies? Since they both know in person the Medicus from the story? It is very hard for me to imagine a whole new universe with its seas, its sky, etc. when I keep telling myself it belongs to a single person. It is not clear enough for me, I don’t understand really well how this universe works and I am the kind of girl who needs something a lot more practical to really get into the story.

I didn’t really care about the characters and I turned the pages without really wanting to. Also, I thought there were too many similar things with Harry Potter, especially for the characters. The worst is that I didn’t understand at all what was the point of the Emerald Table that is mentioned throughout the whole book. I read and read the part in which the Great Master explains it, but I still can’t understand it! In short, I was eager to finish it to read something else. This time, it is definitely the end of Oscar Pill for me. What a pity, my favorite cover is the one of the third book! I am still quite curious to have a child’s opinion about this series because I am sure young readers should enjoy it. I would still like to read an adult book from the author, a person I really enjoyed meeting.
