Rylie Sullivan hasn’t had an easy life. She is broken, so broken she doesn’t think she will ever be fixed. When she meets Derek, he barges into her life and tries to break down the walls she has so carefully construed to keep what’s left of her safe. When Rylie’s past mixes with her present, will Derek stand by her and help her survive? Or will he bail for the next pretty thing?

Derek Tremaine has had it easy. Coming from a wealthy family and blessed with good looks, Derek has breezed through life. After years of one night stands, and a few half ass attempts at relationships, Derek has almost given up on ever finding the woman for him. When he sees Rylie however, he can’t help but be drawn to her. Rylie is different, more so than any other person Derek has met. Rylie’s beauty- her tattoos, piercings and beautiful blonde dreads drew him in, but it’s her sweet, kind nature that makes him want to stay around and protect her. Winning Rylie’s heart will be his greatest challenge yet, but Derek knows the reward will be more than worth it.
Which is why Derek has no intentions of letting her go.

Intended for mature audiences.

"Oh you are fucking kidding me right...

yes, I went into this book knowing there would be cheating. HOWEVER, by the sound of it, I thought he would change, and be a better man for her.
Fucking cunt bastard!! so he loses his fucking memory, so we all think. then AFTER he fucking marries the girl, and she forgives him and everything, we find out he was faking the whole fucking time. AND fucking made plans with one of his fuck buddies after the honeymoon. then the book fucking ends.

Like really, fuuuuuckk.
stupid fucking asshole!

Ok so, when I read books, I'm ok with the cheating scenario if it turns out he didn't really cheat.
I'm even ok with cheating ONCE, not really but I can get past it..

***BETA read 19/08/13***

I have been a fan of the 'Resisting Love' series since the beginning.
I have fallen in love with each and everyone of them.

Although I didn't know Derek very well going into this, I fell hard and fast for this now ex playboy with a heart of gold.

Rylie, WOW!! What a strong woman she is! After what she has been through I was able to connect and sympathise with her very, very easily. To overcome such abuse is an incredible feet. I couldn't imagine living with so many triggers! I don't know that I would be able to pick myself up and move forward with my life. But this woman right here, she did it, and best of all, she did it with f**king style!!

Dereks parents argh, so cool. I LOVE them. Elizabeth and William Tremaine I will remember the two of you forever!

What William did when her 'Parents' showed up and what happened with A certain other man had me in tears! Silly I know, but to know that you are THAT loved, by someone not related by blood, AMAZING!

I thought Cecily was bad! Hell she is a saint compared to her mother Monica!! You hear stories and think to yourself, no that would never happen! But apparently it dose!

Argh Conner!! When the truth about him is reviled, I was floored!! Seriously how did I not see that coming?!? I'm glad the way the story ended with him!

This story flowed beautifully without pause and I loved every second of it!! I am happy to recommend!

Dawn I would love to have a 1/4 of the talent you possess. The amount of books you pump out I would expect them to drop in quality ( no offence ) but somehow you manage to keep the level of your novels on par with so many other big authors that only do a book a year and I love that about you. Im sure some authors could say 4 books in 2 months no worries!! But would they be able to say AMAZON BEST SELLERS LIST every time, with them all!! You are a machine!!

I'm secretly hoping for some spin offs from this series.

Thank you for writing me into you book! I'm seriously awesome in print lol !!

Can't wait for your next project :)

God, this needs to come out already!
But until then..

description

Edit

So, I have finally got the chance to read this book, and it was a-ma-zing.

description

I seriously have no idea how these books keep getting better, and better.
I'm really torn with this one, because I want to say it was my favourite in the series, but Chase is still my baby.

In this book, we're dealing with a girl that has had a horrible past, and tries to get ahead of it all.
And Derek is the most wonderful person in this book.
He's attentive, patient, understanding, loving, and I want to hug him, and kiss him.

This is the only book I have read in this series. I really enjoyed the character Derek. He is a total alpha male. I felt so bad for Riley and what she went through. I never give spoilers, but I did enjoy the second half much more than the first but that could be because it contained the most of the steamy parts ;)

2 stars. We've all read this story before, although the names of the characters as well as the locations (due to the different authors writing this same tired out story), vary. We have the tragic, damaged girl with a horrific past and the bad boy, man whore who falls in lust with her at first sight, vows to make her 'his' and subsequently, wants to change for her. Then we either have all other female characters in the novel divided into two camps: friends of Rylie's and the girlfriend's of Derek's buddies OR petty, jealous and catty 'sluts & whores' who shamelessly throw themselves at Derek at every turn and who look down their nose at Rylie for her 'alternative' looks. Really? Really?! In this day and age, a few tattoos and dreadlocks can still be considered shocking and anti-establishment?! Yes, in some circles I'm sure body modification and hair that looks outside of what is considered the social norm is frowned upon but the level to which Rylie is ostracized by 'the upper classes' and the wealthy in this novel is just a tad bit extreme and unrealistic in this present day and time.

The prejudice against wealthy and upper class people is extreme. The slut shamming and portrayal of women as such catty, jealous, objectified sexual beings is extreme. That bothered me the most. These women are given no self respect or dignity. They are mean to Rylie because they are jealous of her being with 'such a god' like Derek...REALLY?! BECAUSE REAL WOMEN DO NOT ACT LIKE THIS!!!!! Why do New Adult authors, many of whom are WOMEN continue to portray our gender in such a disgusting light?! WTF!!!! Women have self respect! We have self control! We do not throw ourselves at any 'hot' man in our vicinity nor do we treat the girl friend/female companion of said 'hot man' like shit just because she's so 'lucky' to be with him and we're just oh so jealous and angry about it!!! UGH. I. CAN'T. EVEN.

Despite this regurgitation of character outlines, these particular main characters, Rylie & Derek, are pretty likable. It's the writing and plot that leave a lot to be desired. Way too much telling and not enough showing. So many things rushed and not fully fleshed out. Not enough sades of gray. Way too many stereotypes in use. There's nothing complex or intricate about this story. There's nothing special or outstanding about it either. Not in the writing, the characters, the plot or the setting. There are no plot twists. Nothing. We never really get to understand Rylie and truly get inside her head and heart. There is no depth. So much of what happens to Rylie is glossed over in a way. The author never digs deeper or seeks to truly connect the reader to the horrors that Rylie has lived through. Because the writing fails to do this, there is a distance that we as the reader feel from Rylie and her struggles. Sure, we feel a lot of emotions but even those emotions are somewhat diluted. Once again, there is just no depth here. Everything stays just beneath the surface and never manages to dive very deep.

Don't even get me started on the setting. I read many chapters into the story before realizing that it takes place in Australia! WTF?! There was not an inkling in the writing or speech of the characters or ANYTHING that I was in Australia! The only thing that tipped me off was when Rylie moved to Melbourne...I quickly realized that I was reading a story that takes place in another country different from my own. That was so disappointing and frankly, shoddy writing. There was absolutely no atmosphere created by the writing. I could have been in any metropolitan city. In fact, I believed until I read the name Melbourne, that the story was just taking place in some random city in the USA. Sigh. What a wasted opportunity. The author could have added so much spice and individuality to the story by truly engaging the reader in the setting. The culture of the characters and their speech patterns, slang and intonations did not even clue me in to the fact that they were Australian. This was so bizarre and just hugely disappointing. In her author bio, I saw that she hails form Canada but I have to wonder, did she do ANY research on Australia at all?!!! Because this novel did not read like she did ANY!

While the New Adult cliches here were really just too much, I don't think I would have minded yet ANOTHER showing of these highly over used tropes if they'd been done differently; if there'd been a unique twist added to them or something special/individual about their execution. There was not. It was all just the same old predictable and overly used plot and plot devices we've seen before. It all unfolded exactly the way that I thought it would and their were absolutely NO surprises to be found within this story. Nothing fresh or unique here.

This book is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone novel.

Anyways...

This book is, by far, my favorite out of the series.

Kade is still a close second, but Rylie and Derek’s story just ripped me up on the inside.

Our Heroine, Rylie Sullivan, grew up in a home without love, and lived in a nightmare scenario until the age of 18, when she finally made her escape.

The book starts out with our girl Ry, celebrating a new promotion and finally feeling like her life is actually going somewhere.

She’s fun, carefree, and high on life when a mysterious man named Caleb comes into her world. After spending a night dancing in his arms, Rylie decides to take things a step further, but is surprised when Caleb insists on getting to know her first. By the end of their first night together, Rylie is naturally starting to feel the buddings of an unexpected romance and we leave the prolog with high hopes that our girl’s streak of luck will continue on in to her new relationship status.

But then we wouldn’t have Derek now would we?

Derek comes into Rylie’s life when she’s only a figment of her old self. Some bad shit…and I mean really bad shit…goes down between Ry and Caleb, and our girl is nowhere near the end of the healing process and flat out refuses to consider any type of relationship with another man UNTIL she can gather up the remnants of her old self, and begin to re-build her life from the fragile, broken pieces that are left of it.

And this Ladies and Gentle-ladies is where I feel that this book stands apart from the rest.

Rylie’s struggles to rebuild herself…doesn't happen instantly!

Ohmergerd! A heroine that doesn't fall from one relationship into another…could it be true?!

Yes it mother fucking is and it’s a fucking relief given the seriousness of the situation that Rylie had gone through.

Derek has to WORK to get Rylie to be responsive to him and LET HIM IN.
It doesn't happen instantly and OF COURSE there are few hiccups along the way, but this book comes full fucking circle in the end, and IMO doesn't leave you feeling cheated.

It truly is a great fucking story of overcoming a terrible fucking situation and putting all of the pieces back together to make an even better life for oneself.

Rylie is a fucking boss.
Derek is a fucking Alpha male THAT GETS IT.
And Dawn did a really great fucking job with ending this series on its highest note.

Oh and being that this book just came out, I find it odd that the one star bandit has already struck, so I’d like to take the time to address something that said Bandit had to complain about.
“The voices were different.”
Um…duh?
Claiming that the characters "don't sound right” when this book is about two characters who were only had small supporting roles in the previous books…is just dumb. The older characters only make two appearances in this book, and are completely the same--same antics, same speech patterns, etc. But the Bandit was right in a way, because this book has NEW characters and their voices ARE different which is most likely due to the fact that they weren't IN the other books.
Derek had cameos, of course, but never once, have we been let inside of his head- until now. Also, I don't even remember Rylie ever speaking in the previous books, much less already having an established character profile BEFORE her own book.
Feeling uncomfortable for the heavy use of the word "fuck" is something that I can understand, but nit picking at new characters because they don't "sound right" or "feel right" compared to the profile that The Bandit had already established for them in his/her mind, isn't fair to the author of this book and I don’t think it’s fair to the people who are contemplating if they should take the time to read it or not. It’s just flat out dishonest.

But with that being said, I’ll step off of my soap box and leave you all with this: Give this book a shot. I swore up and down that no one could ever replace Kade as my favorite story in the series, but Derek and Rylie just blew that out of the water!
.
Congratulations Dawn on another successful book, and while I’m sad to tell this series farewell, I’m stoked to see what you have planned for us in the future.

While I love this series, this was by far my least favorite book of the bunch.

The highlight of this book was absolutely Derek and his parents, along with the occasional pop up of a character from the past books.

The story was very choppy, as there were gaps in it that should have been filled with information to make Rylie a more likeable and believable character.

Her relationship with Caleb, which played such a vital role in who she becomes, was not addressed in a way that answered any of the questions that it left us with, nor outlined this pivotal point in her life that caused such a drastic change in who she was. She played the POOR ME routine through most of the book, yet we never quite understand why she even stayed with him. Instead, it was inconsistent in its plot, which left Rylie very inconsistent in her behavior.

I could not get behind her at all, but instead found myself hoping that Derek just moved on to someone else. She did things that were completely contradictory to who she portrayed herself to be, then quickly reversed it and pushed Derek away. His patience, understanding and gentle hand were more than swoon worthy, and he had some of his own individual moments that made you realize just how special he was.

The issue with Derek's "friend," who made Rylie uncomfortable, was the beginning of the end for me where this girl was concerned. The fact she never told Derek about her uneasiness, but asked him numerous times to stay with her, then unloaded her past in front of him and his parents at a specific moment, also led to more behavior that made no sense.

While Rylie appeared to state that she behaved a certain way and changed for a specific reason, none of that truly played out when the times were necessary, but, instead, she reverted to a different person that did not comport with who she was being painted as.

One particular storyline inconsistency was regarding Rylie's house and her master bedroom. Time was taken to address her room being taken over by a king size bed, but that she will never get a smaller one because she loves her bed...then later on...her bed is a queen when Derek takes her there. Minor...sure, but bothersome, yes, because the inconsistency was a consistent flow for the story and the character of Rylie.

I had high hopes for this book because I truly loved the times Derek made an appearance in the other books, and he did not disappoint in this book in terms of enjoying seeing the person he was and could continue to grow to be. What fell short for me was Rylie's inconsistency and the large gaps in time and information that appeared to be necessary to make this story complete, whole and flow in a more cohesive manner.

Still love this series, but this particular story was not a winner for me.

I absolutely love the Resisting Love series, and I was so happy when Dawn asked me to beta read this for her! That being said...Derek will blow you away!

At first I didn't know whether to love or hate Derek. He such a douchy womanizer, all 'wham bam thank you ma'am", and I just wanted to slap the shit out of him. But then again, he can be such a sweetheart! He sees all of his friends settling down, and deep down he wants what they have too. The moment his eyes set on Rylie, he knows he has to claim her for himself.

Rylie...this poor broken girl has been through so much. An abusive childhood, an abusive ex-fiance and a lifetime of painful memories and scars. She's afraid to trust again and feels like she has too much baggage to let love in, but Derek is determined to tear down the walls she has built up that are preventing them from truly being together.

LOVED Derek's parents! Two of the kindest, most selfless people, and they welcome Rylie with open arms.

Cecily and Connor...don't even get me started on them! They just pissed me off left and right!

Overall, wonderful story! Dawn's writing always amazes me, and this book does not disappoint! Highly recommend!

Dawn you should be very proud of yourself, this is an amazing book.

Rylie, beautiful, broken, woman with so much in her past and present life who would think she could avoid going insane.

Derek's Parents, William and Elizabeth, such loving parents with a heart for people made a huge impact on Rylie's heart.

Melody and Erika, Rylie's co-workers and the two ladies o helped her start to live again.

Derek, handsome, sexy, successful and a true "Bad Boy" who enjoyed being single until he started noticing how happy his married friends have become.

This book took me through so many emotions and the storyline was great, I couldn't help but feel a bit bad for Cecily lol.

Derek could easily be a stand alone book but I am happy I have read them all.

This was not a disappointment to me at all, I just wish it was longer read it in hours.

Would’ve given it five stars if it weren’t for all the grammar, punctuation and spelling mistakes. But I decided to give it at least four stars because I enjoyed the story itself very much. Also, the character Derek in this story seems quite different from when he was briefly in a few of the earlier books in this series, but I guess that’s due to the different author who wrote this one.

Damn this one was a tough read for me. It was hard to read because I knew it was the end of the series,a series I have seriously fallen in love with, and it was hard to read because Rylie & Derek's story is not wine and roses. In fact, I was afraid where the next page would take me.

Rylie is so beautiful, and although she isn't your typical beauty queen, she is probably the most beautiful of all the girls in this series because of her insane ability to be strong when everything falls apart. I have a fondness for women who are strong despite the heartache and devastation they go through. Rylie meets someone that she thinks might lead to a happily ever after, only to find out that there may not be such a thing as Happily Ever After.

Derek, what can I say about this guy? He is panty melting hot! He is uber strong and he is my type of Alpha! Most importantly though, he is kind. And right now Rylie needs that. And he protects her and helps her move forward, he pretty much is the best man for the job. I loved the chemistry between Rylie and Derek. I loved that it took a while for them to find their rhythm and that they were able to conquer the fears and setbacks.

Thank you Dawn, for finishing this series on such a powerful note. I really love what you did with Derek. I really love this series. I give this 5 lipsticks. If you haven't read this series, you need to.

Omg!!!! Absolutely loved this book I knew my friend Dawn wouldn't steer me wrong with this one. I was so sad in the beginning with what happened to Rylie I mean who wouldn't be not being able to have children and going through everything that she did. It was so sweet that Derek and his Family totally stood by her and got her through those tough times. I had a hard time putting the book down. I'm so sad the series is over but I look forward to many, many more books to come! Love ya Dawn! Muah!

I don’t even know. I got a print copy of this book as a gift from a friend. There aren’t even page numbers… some words have actual slash marks through them printed on the pages. Is it possible that this is the only print copy in the entire world? Was this done in someone’s garage with a printer and some glue? I don’t think a copy editor came within three miles of this book. Dawn, if your reading this I will literally copy edit this for you for free. You get two stars for the spice and the fact that I audibly laughed out loud at the spelling mistakes. Also minus a star because the main character is a white girl with dreads.

2.5 stars..For more than 50 percent of the book it drags.. to many descriptions, dialoges that are weird and depressing things..
Then the story takes a turn and its great..

I was fortunate to be a beta reader for this book. This is my personal, honest opinion. Reading a book in its infancy and seeing the path to a finished novel is intriguing.

This book gives us the story of Derek and Rylie. Derek we know as the guy friend to Layla and Nikki and manwhore from Chase and Kade’s books.

The book begins with Rylie- a young woman with a troubled past- having fun and finding love. Soon she realizes that what she thinks is love is dangerous- but can’t find a way out. She is almost killed. Only then is she able to make a change. But continues to be haunted by the relationship and her past. Cue the rebuilding montage music- she gets pierced, tatted and dreaded up-creating a perfect armor to keep her safe. But she didn’t plan on Derek.
Derek is sick of the game- he sees his friends all falling in love and wants the same. He meets Rylie and that is it. He is hooked. But he is too much of a player for Rylie to trust, and she won’t him a chance. And honestly he is not ready for her.

Fast forward three years. Rylie lives in Melbourne and has a successful hair salon. She has a few close girlfriends but no love life…at all.
Derek has also recently moved to Melbourne…and has not been able to get Rylie out of his mind!

They reconnect and develop a sweet and fun friendship. Always with the undercurrent of maybe something more. Derek knows he has to be patient- but tells Rylie that she will be his. This excites and terrifies her! As it also does to the reader :)

Things that I LOVE!
Having a few peeks into Conner and Cecily’s minds. They bring the story together and set the scene for some serious drama. Especially creepy scene when Conner is alone after Cecily leaves- thinking about Rylie…cue spooky lighting and scary stalker music!
Derek’s parents- they are fanfuckingtastic!
Conner’s end- so satisfying.
Best non-proposal proposal scene EVER- perfect for the two of them and shows again how well Derek has gotten to know Rylie
Rylie parents and their resolution
Derek’s ability to trust his feelings and never waivers
Rylie doesn’t play the idiot and actually listens when crisis occurs- she is pissed but that is to be expected. Again Elizabeth ROCKS

Thing –yep, singular- that bugged me…
Cecily. She gets off to easy. It completely works with Rylie’s character how it all ends up- I just think Cecily deserves to be crushed. Again- my opinion. Vengeful much Evette??

Ok- maybe two things- I didn’t want their story to end! But do we ever want it to end when we are so invested and relate and love the characters?

To end this love fest- Rylie thanks Derek for “fixing her”, he tells her she did it all on her own- and that he is grateful “you gave me the honor of being by your side while you did it”. LOVE Derek.

They get their own perfect HEA, epilogue satisfies the what happens next questions.

Sweet, lovable, heartbreaking, inspiring story!!

THIS SERIES KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER !!!!!!

I don't know if this is the last installment in this series but it was said in the book that it is and I am so frustrated i hope the news isn't true since we kinda still have some characters who can become a book such as Teagan :/

anyways lets go back to the book at hand :

This book broke my heart , Rylie's past was so devastating it really got to me when i was reading it. It was crazy how everything kept getting screwed up in her life and it was so damn heartbreaking .

This book follows Derek , we knew he moved to Melbourne from the book James well we see his life for a first time and its nothing if not interesting . After being the playboy for a long time Derek is sick of it and just wants to settle down after seeing how Kade and Chase have such an amazing life with their women , and that's when he sees Rylie . With dreadlocks ,piercing ,and a ton of tattoos she catches his eye and he isn't relenting until he has her . But Riley's past isn't pretty and when trajectory struck her a year ago it left her heartbroken and closed off . We get to see if Derek is enough for Riley to open up and feel safe again , and if he can keep her safe and away from a past that just keeps popping up and threaten everything he hold important.

A SEXY SEXY ALFA WITH A HEART OF DAMN GOLD , why don't they make men like that these days * sighs*

YOU WILL LOVE THIS ADDITION !!!! I REALLY HOPE IT ISN'T THE LAST ONE ! :/

I am so sad that this is the last book in the series, but boy did it not disappoint. I absolutely loved Derek and Rylie’s story. I will say that this book was different from the rest but that was a good thing. You could see the growth in the story. We only see a glimpse of the previous characters but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Derek and Rylie needed the story to themselves. It was nice to have fresh and new characters with such an interesting back story. We have only seen a little of Derek in previous stories and Rylie is a fresh face. This was a fantastic story of healing and learning to love again; it was gut wrenching at times. Rylie is so damaged, she has experienced things in life that no one should have to endure. Because of this she is very closed off and guarded (rightfully so). Derek, who is a former womanizer, is ready to settle down and from the minute he lays eyes on Rylie is see’s something special. Derek’s perseverance and love combined with Rylie’s strength really make a beautiful story. Oh, and Derek’s parents are two of my favorite characters. While I am sad this is the end of the series, I feel complete BUT I still would love a family reunion book.

Derek Tremaine in the Resisting Love series finds Rylie Sullivan attractive, smart and the woman for him. Rylie comes with baggage from her past from being abused first by her parents and then by an ex-boyfriend who used a knife to try to kill her. This story is about her recovery, taking her life back from despair to become a successful business woman, a wife and mother.

Derek's parents are wonderful support characters in this book. They come to love Rylie as they would their own child and help the young couple in many ways.

Derek has to use patience and gradually wins Rylie's trust and acceptance of herself as a good person. The story shows Rylie's strong character after the abuse she suffers. Derek, the book deals with abuse, graphically and the tragic effects on a victim, so if the topic is not one you want to read about, you will miss a good story with how Rylie works to overcome her problems with her self-image, her nightmares and fears to become a person of worth.

A five star read all day long and that's what I did, I read it all in one sitting. Traumatized by her past, Riley starts a whole new life. Derek meets Riley just months after her release from the hospital from being in a coma for months from her ex. The things Riley is put through just makes me want to break down and cry for her. God, what a strong character she is and so fierce when she finally realizes she has people who love her, that they will stand by her, not on top of her, controlling her, trying to make her someone who she is not. There are so many moments in this book where my heart grew bigger and bigger and swelled so much I thought it would burst from the love. Do not get me wrong there is a lot of drama, a lot of insecurities issues to work through, stalkers and jealousy. There were moments of laughter and moments of sorrow, sadness and anger, God the anger especially. Derek and his family are amazingly wonderful and so patient and caring and sometimes, like towards the end scary as hell. Overall, an amazing story to get into.
