“A kid should not be aware of his own heartbeat.” Never forget the unexplored territories in your own back yard, or under your house. Here, Vashti Quiroz-Vega gives voice to the young inhabitants of one neighborhood where things are more than they seem. Robbie is an ordinary boy in a normal world, as we first enter the neighborhood and witness an idyllic scene of prepubescent children at play; but what happens in silence and in the dark will amaze you. Join Robbie as he journeys to explore unknown and forgotten tales of intrigue, fear and blind faith. Ask yourself: What kinds of monsters lurk in your world? What will you do when you can no longer see? The Basement is a tale of angst, teamwork and solutions, of treasure hunts and adventure, and of facing your fears. It is a focus on the small- but everything- world of one group of pre-teens and the very real and wondrous world they face, and it is a take-away resource. What will you take away?
Vashti Quiroz-Vega is a writer of Fantasy, Horror, and Thriller. Since she was a kid she's always had a passion for writing and telling stories. It has always been easier for her to express her thoughts on paper.
She enjoys reading almost as much as she loves to write. Some of her favorite authors are Stephen King, Michael Crichton, Anne Rice, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling and George R. R. Martin.
She enjoys making people feel an array of emotions with her writing. She likes her audience to laugh one moment, cry the next and clench their jaws after that.
When she isn't building extraordinary worlds and fleshing out fascinating characters, she enjoys spending time with her husband JC and her Pomeranian Scribbles who is also her writing buddy.
A story that talks about and emphasizes the emotive subject of bullying. There are some fun aspects too, it shows bullying can come in all walks of life. I have not quite finished it yet but the writer Vashti Quiroz-Vega is very promising, I look forward to reading more of her work.
Well I finished the book quite a while ago now and read it in 2 weeks, very easy to follow and you will find yourself routing for the main Character Robbie throughout his strife's and troubles. Robbie is a great character and is much stronger than he thinks, it also shows what you can achieve if you put your mind to it. Something happens right at the end of the book, you will not see it coming. A must read indeed!
The author sent me a promo copy of The Basement in exchange for an honest review. It was also kind of a birthday present; one that I was very excited to receive and eager to start reading. I really enjoyed reading each chapter of this book and will happily pass in on to my pre-teen son, who could not help himself from reading a few lines over my shoulders from time to time. He asked questions along the way, but more so near the end. He wanted to know why Robbie went in the basement and, like me before finishing the book, needed to find out what happened to those who tried to help the frightened boy complete the task he had been given. I won't reveal nearly as much as I did to my son because you need to read it for yourself. It's not just the story that is good, but also the way it was told. If you love suspense and don't mind a bit of gore, I promise that you will not be disappointed by reading this book. You may think you know what will happen at times, but the author plants doubt in your mind and makes you want to keep reading to find out if your suspicions are correct, hoping that they are not. I could not put the book down! The Basement was well written and all the character were very real. The fact that the base of this story could be real makes it all the more scarier. It made me gasp and gave me chills. Within this entertaining and frightening tale is a good lesson to be learned. When The Basement comes out on August 20th, don't be afraid to buy a copy!
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
A fantastic read from Vega!
Immediately the author draws you into this wonderful story by showing great observational skills. Vashi has a talent for great and unusual details in her writing. The tale has very realistic descriptions with nicely developed characters, which took me back to younger days. Kids playing, exploring and the thoughts and feelings they encounter along the path of life. The story is creative, imaginative and a gripping read, full of excitement and sentiment.
I really loved this little section a gives a good taste of the book: Then it would be time for him to go on his treasure hunt in hell. He shuddered and closed his eyes tightly to say a little prayer. Please, God, send one of your angels to protect me from whatever waits in that basement. Amen.
The Basement is a thrilling story and will leave you wanting more- this is a real page-turner. Vashti Quiroz-Vega is certainly an author to watch out for in the future. A highly recommended 5*****
THE BASEMENT is an unusual coming-of-age story about an 11-year-old boy, Robbie, who is barely surviving a grim life with an alcoholic father and non-entity mother until the day he must pass a terrible test set for him by the father. Robbie is prepared, in a way, by an accident and subsequent ordeal waiting to be rescued during a scout outing, but his father’s cruel test is to leave the boy overnight in a rat-infested basement of a tenement house. Robbie draws strength from his belief in God and eventually wins through, with a courage that helps to transform his father.
The main theme is that of finding courage to survive abuse. The book would be a good candidate to be read out loud to a middle grade religious instruction class or to young abuse survivors, with characters, concepts, and some advanced vocabulary all offering good discussion opportunities.
I read Vashti Quiroz-Vega's new book, THE BASEMENT in record time. It is fast paced and chock full of great characters. I loved the neighborhood and neighbor descriptions. Vashti writes in a clean, easy-to-read style with obvious heart behind her words. As I understand it this is Vashti's first book. I think she has a great writing career ahead of her. I hope there is more of Vashti on the horizon.
The author intrigued me and equally terrified me. I struggled to stop thinking about this book. As I do with most of this authors writing on her blog. She knows how to frighten me! Absolutely essential - add to your to-read pile now. This author is one to watch out for...
