As a middle school teacher in a Christian school, I feel that my students are the exact target audience Carlos Whittaker had in mind when writing Get Your Hopes Up. He's subtitled his book "90 Devotions and True Stories for Young World Changers," and this is what my students are looking for in our daily morning devotions: an adult who will hook them with stories and then talk to them like the agents of change they hope to be. Whittaker uses a mix of well-known inspirational accounts (Captain Sully landing on the Hudson, the trapped Chilean miners) and stories from his own life to hook readers with an interesting premise. He then connects each situation to an aspect of Christian living to drive home a simple point for readers like my students, middle schoolers with a connection to Christ but looking for a bit more. I'll be happy to add this to our rotation of devotions.

Carlos Whittaker's "Get Your Hopes Up" is a heartfelt and impactful devotional designed to resonate with tweens, teens, and even adults who seek guidance and inspiration. Each of the 90 devotions starts with a scripture, introduces an uplifting story—be it from biblical heroes like Gideon and Paul or inspirational figures like Arunima Sinha and Captain Sully—and concludes with a prayer that ties the spiritual lesson together.
As an intentional parent deeply invested in the mental and spiritual well-being of the younger generation, I found this book particularly poignant. Today, more than ever, hope is a scarce resource, and too many children struggle with issues like anxiety, depression, and a lack of self-worth. This book speaks directly to these challenges, offering stories and teachings that underscore how deeply God loves them and the potential they have to make a positive impact.
What makes "Get Your Hopes Up" stand out is its accessibility and relevance. It addresses complex themes with simplicity and empathy, making it an excellent resource for parents and educators to share with their children. While it is aimed at kids aged 8-12, the content possesses a depth that makes it suitable for older children and teenagers as well.
This devotional is not just informative; it's transformative. It encourages young readers to reflect, engage, and grow in their faith, instilling a sense of hope and purpose that can be carried into their daily lives. The inclusion of vibrant artwork adds to the appeal, making it a visually enjoyable and spiritually enriching read.
Highly recommended for anyone looking to foster a positive and hopeful outlook in the young world changers in their lives. "Get Your Hopes Up" is a treasure trove of wisdom and encouragement that promises to inspire and nurture the next generation.
In Get Your Hopes Up, Carlos Whittaker has written a devotional geared to the younger audience. He begins the book by stating that we have all lost hope in something or someone or maybe even God. This book is geared to assist you in getting your hope back. He explained true hope as a limitless hope that only comes from trusting God and how powerful He is. God has performed miracles such as parting the Red Sea. We can see hope throughout the different stories he shares in this book and how it has changed and inspired others.
One of my favorite’s stories discussed an event when they were travelling and in the airport. His wife, Heather saw a woman in need who had her items in a plastic bag only to carry her stuff. Heather told Carlos to empty his suitcase and they were going to give them there’s. They have to move his stuff into a backpack and part of it in Heather’s suitcase. He explained that his wife saw a need and knew she needed to fill it. He goes on to looking at the Biblical story about the Good Samaritan. As we all know, a man was beaten and left on the side of the road injured. One a Samaritan would stop by and chose to help him. He explained how we can all offer hope and extend a hand when someone else is in need. Small acts of compassion and kindness can change others’ lives. When we choose to love your neighbor as yourself can real change begin.
I would recommend this life changing devotional to the younger generation because it is written to be a simple daily read. Though the older generation could still relate and connect to the stories. There is illustrations and graphics throughout the book which I believe will help appeal more to the younger audience. There is tons of encouragement and lessons that can help to train up a child the way that they should go. The stories are impactful and will help us to rediscover our hope.
Get Your Hopes Up: 90 Devotions and True Stories for Young World Changers by Carlos Whittaker offers hope and encouragement to kids who need it today.
Get Your Hopes Up is aimed at tweens and teens. This book is good for both guys and gals. It is also a book that crosses cultures and skin colors. The book is also good for kids from various socioeconomic groups. I love that it is an all-inclusive book. I also love that these stories and devotions are full of hope and encouragement, because who doesn't need more of that? Each of the readings starts with a Bible verse, then a devotional story and ends with a prayer, like many devotionals do. However, this devotional is written in such a way that it is down-to-earth and easy for people to relate to. Carlos writes like I think he must speak--I feel like he is sitting next to me having coffee/tea, and sharing stories with me that relate to Scripture. I am not a teen but I found these devotionals to speak to me too.
This book is divided into 5 parts: The Power of Hope, The Importance of Prayer, The Call to See the Unseen, The wisdom to lead with love and generosity, and the Fight for Change.
The layout of Get Your Hopes Up is also nice. The pages are a mix of colors and there are drawings and illustrations to go along with some of the readings. I like the book's design as well as the readings. There are also a couple of pages at the back of the book that talk about organizations that bring hope and there is further information on how to connect with them for more information if you want it.

This is my first time reading a Carlos Whittaker book, and I loved it! I have read many devotional books with more to come (some not reviewed or will be reviewed on my blog) and this is one of the best ones. The book is geared toward tween and teens, but I got just as much out of it. It's an inspiring read from a relatable guy who has a gift of sharing the Gospel in an easy to understand way. Whittaker gives tweens and teens wisdom on navigating the world as a follower of Christ, and how to be a light of hope in a dark world. Each devotional starts with a scripture, followed by a short story, and ends with a short prayer. It doesn't matter how old (or young) you are, you can't read this book and not feel inspired. I will definitely be searching for more books by Whittaker.
Thank you, NetGalley and Carlos Whittaker for allowing me to review! As always, my review is my own opinion and thoughts. This review will be shared to my Instagram @fictionluxblog shortly.
Carlos Whitaker iis a new to me author and Is now one of my favorite inspirational writers. He has recently published a new devotional book for young people entitled, "Get Your Hopes Up: 90 Devotions and True Stories for Young World Changers."
He begins each devotional with a scripture passage and includes a short bio about either a Bible character like Gideon and Paul or an inspiring figure such as Arunima Sinha who was the first female amputee to scale Mount Everest and Captain Sully, the pilot who saved 155 people. He concludes the devotional with encouraging and inspirational words and a prayer. I recommend this book for a child, student, or any young person who needs some encouragement. I believe that includes everyone. You’ll find it quite readable and practical to everyday living. The inviting artwork enhances the devotionals.
The cover art picture of Mr. Whittaker exudes joy.

Carlos Whittaker is one of my favorite people to follow on Instagram. I’m proud to be one of his Instafamilia. When I saw his newest devotional book on NetGalley, I knew that I wanted to read it. I’ve read his other book, “How to Human”, and enjoyed it. This devotional is colorful, easy to read/understand and is relatable for tweens and adults. I really enjoyed the real life connections to the Bible.
Thanks to Carlos Whittaker, Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the advanced copy!
This guy is new to me but I knew what to expect based on the picture. What a beautiful smile! So much enthusiasm! I'm going to figure out how to follow him because this book was just a lot of good news and people being kind to each other. Obstacles were overcome, and there was so much positivity. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
I wish this book had been around when I had tweens. The stories of hope will inspire kids to see how God wants all of us to dream big and have a positive impact for Jesus. Carlos doesn't shy away from difficult topics but he also doesn't overwhelm the reader with gratuitous details. He blends in compassion and empathy when talking about difficult subjects and shows how hopeful people can be even in dark circumstances. His book will truly help your kids get their hopes up!
So this book was just what was needed. It's great insight for any age with inspirational and hopeful stories. Carlos mentions taking a detox from social media during the book and it's so true how important this is for any period of time may it be the 7 weeks he did or even just a few hours. Giving our minds that breather is critical as we are so connected these days but being connected as Carlos shows doesn't always have to be a drain, we can use our connectivity for good too!
