Donna McGarry's Zodiacts: Leo Limelight Lunacy: Dance of the Dueling Divas introduces the five to eight year old crowd to the creative energy of the Leo Moon. The action begins when the irrepressible Starrkitty discovers her competitor, Lola Leo, headlining a solo show. Kit is fit to be tied and scrambles to produce a rival spectacle. When she discovers that some aspects of show biz, such as costuming and sound mixing, are best left to the experts, Kit goes Aquarian and assembles a stellar crew to help her shine. Which leading lady will steal the limelight under this attention craving Moon?
Merging celestial imagery with verbal whimsy, Zodiacts: Leo Limelight Lunacy humorously explores themes of egomania and self-absorption. The book is available on the author's website zodiacts.com, amazon, or createspace.
Some people love attention and others shy away from it. Those heavily imbued with influence from the zodiac sign, Leo, thrive on it in addition to being natural leaders. However, if they’re too independent they may find out that they’re not the center of the Universe after all as Lola Leo does in this lively children’s story. Star Kitty, who wants to prove to Lola that she’s not the only show in town, discovers that doing it all herself is simply too much work so she gathers a troupe from the various other characters in this series. With someone handling all the necessary details from choreography to logistics and make-up to publicity, Star Kitty’s production is a smash while Lola’s is a total flop.
While this as well as the other Zodiacts stories are directed at children, their messages are applicable to all such that adults will enjoy their bright illustrations and numerous insights as much as the kids. On the surface this story shows the benefits of teamwork and the importance of working together. On a deeper, astrological level, it highlights Leo as the 5th house of the zodiac which includes creativity and ego while its polar sign, Aquarius, is the 11th house which includes friends, goals, networking and teamwork. This colorful story continues the Zodiacts series with another profound lesson from the stars, zany though they may be, who show the need for balance as well as working with others to achieve your goals.
This book was gifted to me for an honest review. Delightful Little Read
This book is a delightful little read. It is full of really nicely done illustrations. I first I thought the book was going to be about someone being greedy and selfish, but as I read on, I realized it is actually about trying hard and doing your best. It also pointed out the importance of being well prepared and using the resources available to do a good job. It also allowed the star and the cat to make up in the end so there was no grief left at the end of the book. I could really relate to the kitty trying to write a script. The picture looked just like me trying to write my own script. The book is delightful and fun with a very good lesson instilled in it. I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars.
It took a minute to adjust my ideas of a kids book and realize this was not a book to be compared to any others. It does not have any "cutesy" kid talk nor does it have any pastel bunnies and babies! It is a unique kind of book with kind of "Odd" types of characters and some very unusual rhyming dialog. I read it myself and was not particularly impressed-- Then I read it to some visiting 4 and 9 year olds-- and !!! They loved it!! I am not ashamed to admit I was shocked. Perhaps it is the total alien-ness of the concept - but for what ever reason-- it enlarged their vocabularies (since half the words were unknown to them) and they still enjoyed it! BRAVO for being brave enough to publish this- it would seem very risky to me.
This book is a very enjoyable middle childhood one aimed at about five to ten years of age. It is cute for adults and wonderful for children. I used it with dozens of childen and they liked the story and loved the illustrations. The children enjoyed talking about the story and it was wonderful for the introduction of rhyming. Children actually used it for discussions and disagreeing.
I received no fee other than a copy of the book, and only that I give an honest review of the book. Please parents and educators - IPADS and computers are toys and books are necessary means for teaching and increasing a child's executive functioning.
