Born and raised in Ontario, C. L. Scholey developed her passion for writing through her love of reading books as a child. Her first book was contracted in Oct 2009 the very same month her first grand son was born. C. L. Scholey still lives in Ontario, in a rural community with her husband and daughter.
From the author: Hello, I'm Connie! Now that we've met how about I tell you a little about me? I love to write, it's like having a super power.
I was born and raised in Ontario...yes I'm Canadian, no I don't live in an igloo, no I've never pet a polar bear, but I have run into a few black bears, seen wolves, moose, coyotes and I think there's a hundred pound squirrel in my attic.
I spend as much time as I can get away with looking for rocks in Bancroft. When I'm not in Bancroft I live in a small town, so people know me when they see me. Some ask me what I'm working on--some even ask me in a regular voice not a whisper.
I get bored easily, it's why one day I'll be working on assassins, the next Sci-fi, then Vikings, then vampires, then planning world domination--wait, what?
Moving on. I love animals and we have a dog, 120p mastiff. He's great with the kids and careful around them, but he'd run me over for a piece of bologna. Otherwise he loves us.
If you want to get to know me better join me on FB or twitter. Right now I need to change back into a mom, it's my best super power.
This was such an enjoyable read: a lot more entertaining than I was originally expecting. The story centres around Bay a human girl who has found herself after leaving Earth in the hands of an abusive Alien the end result being her probable death. That is until she is liberated by another Alien being but with no idea what she is and being so small and defenceless he mistakes her for a pet and decides to gift her to his nephew back on his home planet. This was actually strangely enjoyable and fun, just the ticket to pass a pleasant couple of hours. I did find the idea of Bay being treated as a pampered pet by these furry aliens very amusing indeed and had myself quite the little chuckle very humorous. little Draven was adorable and Zane his father was a big lovable furry hunk, this was such an easy sweet read that I literally read in one sitting. Aliens that actually look like Aliens are my guilty pleasure and this one really did hit that spot. Oh and on a sidenote Bay isn't Bald she just is a lot less hairy than the Zargonnii so seems bald to them: just thought I'd clarify as I have been asked about that description in the blurb. This one is a definite hell yeh from me folks Ive read it twice now so that says everything really. All opinions expressed here in this review are entirely my own.

★Review★
I started this series, but really think I should read her other series New World first, not that there are any cross over characters as such, just the history of the Earthers etc. I think is given in more detail in the earlier series, with it just being barely touched on here.
Nonetheless, I still enjoyed this.
A little bit different, since here, the heroine was not kidnapped for "mating" purposes, nor was there a race of people who had no, or infertile females and hence are on the brink of extinction.
Indeed, it starts off here, with them thinking Bay is a strange little pet, and treating her as such.
Nothing difficult in the reading of it, it is a nice easy story to read that i enjoyed. I liked the premise of the women of the alien race being the more dominant sex, and would be interested in reading more of this series to see how that story line develops, now that the makes have discovered human females.
But first I think I will go back and read the New World series.
My only complaint, is that given it was short, for me, too much time was spent with Bay on the way to Zane, being a ""pet" at least 20% of the book passed before Zane even made an appearance and made their "connection" seem very rushed and almost as if she would have fallen for whichever male she happened to be near and who notice she was an intelligent being.
Sadly there's really nothing redeeming about this book. I bought this specifically because I enjoy alien romances (romance, erotica etc) but this is the kind of book that gives the genre a bad reputation (for being badly written, unoriginal, no plot etc). My biggest complaint is bad world-building - the heroine leaves a dying earth, lands on a planet which turns out to have hostile citizens, leading to the heroine being captured and sold. She ends up in another planet inhabited by beast like aliens - it just sounds so good, and this is what sucked me in, but it is literally to paint by numbers. The being sold thing happens in two sentences, the ending up in another planet as a 'pet' thing happens in around a page and half but there's no sense of what this new world is like.
The aliens are supposed to be beast-like creatures yet the author makes them seem completely humanoid despite their physical description, down to their mannerisms and everything in between. We know they are 'beast'/'aliens' as the author writes 'they were beast-like'....that's really all we get.
After the poor world-building, we have tragic character building, and by that I mean there is none. The heroine is wishy-washy, her back-story is barely described. Two or three sentences show she is 'scared' of her predicament and then she gets over that pretty much completely, happy to be a pet, happy to become the hero's sex partner. We glean no sense of what's she's like. The hero, ditto.
Potential spoilers:
A significant thing I just found odd about this book is that the heroine is treated as a pet by these aliens (the hero's brother buys the heroine at a market for his brother as a pet) - all the while the heroine is in the hero's house, he is largely indifferent to her but then she learns their language (with the help of the hero's son, a beast/alien who may well just be any other son in a romance novel cliche, nothing about him screams alien. He even has homework he has to each night...such a human thing, it felt like the author really lacked imagination because her aliens are just humans with fur and fangs), and then all of a sudden he starts to lust after her, having been sexually indifferent to her before just because she talks his language now - and then three pages later, they're having sex...talk about lack of tension.
Maybe I've been spoiled by people like R.Lee Smith who can write about bizarre and scary alien planets/aliens and still make it seem real and possible whereas this story felt like a fluffy cartoon in writing but really I don't know why readers shouldn't have standards for books like this, should we expect badly written books just because of the genre? That's insulting to readers.
Yet another book I had to mark down from 5 stars to 4 (I don't know why I gave it 5 stars to begin with), because it didn't have excellent world building, great character development and memorable romance as well as prose that make you swoon. But it was a fun read, at times hilarious, entertaining and an excellent way to pass the time.
Reading these types of books helps me to relax and refresh my reading palate, it's like a mini holiday before starting more stimulating, thought provoking emotionally challenging books.
Light on character development and plot, but good if you’re in the mood for sweet and cute.
Imagine yourself in an alien world. They think you are a pet like a puppy, giving you food to reward you, hitting your nose if you’re bad. Interesting and different as a plot. And it stays interesting after Bay (the female human) is able to speak and have sex with the alien dad. The ending was too syrupy sweet for me.

This book is told from multiple POV, both Bay and the aliens.
*** SPOILER WARNING ***
The first chapter is told from the POV of the Zargonnii alien. It amused the hell out of me. Imagine an alien race that looks kind of like bigfoot. Really big, lots of fur, claws, fangs, very strong & tough. Blu has just purchased an "earth female" off a Tonan. It is not sexual in any way. He is buying it for his friend Zane whose pet toff has recently died.
The aliens keep speaking about it being bald (no hair all over it's body like the alien race) and the pink coloring being cute, but the black and blue coloring (especially around it's throat) not being very attractive markings. It smelled bad, needed a wash and looked kind of pathetic. The Tonan trader said the "earth female" pet was harmless and house broken. It did have an "alarm noise" that was horrible to them.
Blu has her in a crate with an old blanket. He inspects her teeth and nails. He brings others from his ship to see the new pet and none of the aliens think it's very impressive. They put a bowl of water in with it and discuss "it" and how Zane doesn't like gag gifts. The aliens try to feed "it" the same food they feed pet toffs, which are "vida-bugs". The vida bugs have pincers and try to eat the human female pet.
When the vida bugs are biting her and making her bleed, she begins screaming - which makes all of the aliens try to find her off switch. (hilarious scene) This ends with one of them being bitten by her. The alien who gets bitten smacks her on the nose saying "Bad female, Bad!" and ends up knocking her unconscious.
Begin Bay's back story: She (along with many other) humans fled a dying earth for planet Ulsey. On planet Ulsey she was captured by a Tonan who wanted to torment another race (Castians) with having her, only no one knew she was missing so the Tonan couldn't torment anyone and didn't want to be stuck with her. So after a week of very little food and water and plenty of rough handling, he sells her to this big white haired, red eyed monster.
Bay wakes when the monster dunks her in cold water trying to wash her. Bay's throat and body had been so mistreated from the Tonan that she is unable to say anything other than her name "Bay" on occasion. She begins to realize she is a pet to these beings. After the monster washes and dries her, he takes her to see the ships doctor. The doctor puts his finger under her nose before stroking her head in greeting. The doctor examines her breasts and belly button, then tried feeding her something that tastes like yogurt to Bay. She drifts off to sleep.
POV back to the Zargonnii: Blu is irritated that the thing eats baby food. They thought her stomach growling was her growling at them. The doctor, Finn gives Blu a lecture on being a proper pet owner, using positive reinforcement, keeping it clean and well fed. Finn agrees to keep the pet during the day while Blu executes his duties, then Blu will take the pet back at night. The doctor trains Bay to sleep on a pile of dirty laundry and keeps feeding her baby food.
As it happens, many of the warriors on the ship now want a pet human female to take care of. Even Finn the doctor says that if Zane doesn't want Bay, he would take her.
Blu takes Bay to the Zargonnii home world. Blu and his brother Zane have an argument that Bay doesn't fully understand. She sees Zane's small son and then watches as the son pleads for the new pet. Blu walks out the door leaving Bay behind. Zane examines her then leaves her alone. Bay's throat is still so injured that she cant speak, but she warms up to the child & begins to help him with his homework. She points to herself and says Bay, the boy introduces himself as Draven.
Zane begins to suspect this new pet is more than she seems when he catches it using the toilet instead of the litter box. Bay finds Zane watching her frequently and Draven thinks Zane is acting funny. Zane's breeding cycle has begun from Bays close proximity, and Zane keeps getting erections when around the new "pet" and is pretty disturbed by it. Meanwhile, Draven knows Bay is more than a pet and begins teaching her their language and the language of the female Zargonnii.
One day a beast from the forest tries to attack Draven and Bay fends it off until Zane can get there. Bay is outed as a non-pet in the aftermath and they begin talking. Zane admits to Bay that she has triggered his mating cycle and she has two choices, be sent away or stay and mate with him in a week's time.
Bay ends up getting to know Zane and having sex with him. Zargonnii mating sounds like Klingon mating. Brutal, fighting for dominance, and sometimes people die. Bay is timid about it, but it works out. They go on enjoying mating for a while, playing family.
There's a little friction later when the Castian's find out that the Zargonii's have a human female. Since the Castian's can mate with human females, they are like gold to the Castians. Zane refuses to give up Bay.
There's quite a bit more, but it's a sweet and worthwhile read. Erotica, but nothing inspiring.
Oh wow! Audible is better!! & This book!! 😳 I loved this book! Omg it was hot and hilarious as heck!!! My fellow PNR lovers I Highly Recommend this book!!! Reminded me of the New Species Series! Instead this was huge alien men who were in AWE of earth females mainly because their alien females are bigger and more dominant than the them. So coming across the human earth female these big hulk of men fell in love.. Now these big warrior men are out looking for earth females mainly to experience what Zane has and to help save these vulnerable females from the dangers that lurk in these Unearthly World!! I just love how these big hulk of alien men acted towards the human female and all she taught and shared.. Trust me you won’t be bored reading this. Is amusing. I won’t say much more mainly because I honestly don’t want to ruin it for you. However I will say I got a bit offended with the beginning on how these aliens treated the human earth female Bay like a pet until she finally spoke... I laughed on how offended I got over it..
I just know this series is gonna be awesome!!!
Anyway if you enjoyed New Species you’ll enjoy this series. I give it 5 Awesome Stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️☺️😘
What she said: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show.... It wasn't sexy, it wasn't erotic, it wasn't interesting nor well written. But it was flat, does it count?
This was a very good story. I really liked both Bay and Zane and enjoyed their story. This isn't a really unique storyline (kidnapped human ends up with a hot hunk of an alien) but it wasn't boring at all and I found I liked it a lot. This is the first book I've read by this author and I do plan to read more of her work in the future.
Bay is 26 and escaped from Earth with other humans when the Earth ends in an apocalyptic way. When their spaceship arrives at the planet that was supposed to be their new home she finds 2 alien races fighting and just tries to find safety. She's kidnapped by one of the aliens and treated very badly (and almost killed) until she's sold as a pet to another alien. Since the first alien injured her throat so bad she can hardly speak she can't tell the new aliens she's intelligent.
Zane is a Zargonnii that lives on a planet where the females are normally the larger and more dominant sex. The sexes lives separately and only interact when mating time comes upon them. The females keep the female children with them and give the sons back to their fathers to be raised after their first month. Since the Zargonnii males never interact with their mothers after their first month, they miss the closeness that they could have with their mothers.
Bay is bought by Blu, Zane's brother, because he thinks she's a pet and his brother's pet just died. Blu thinks that giving Zane a new pet with cheer him up. Blu has a bit of an issue trying to figure out what to feed her as the normal pet food (live hard-shelled beetles) seems more likely to eat her than she is to eat them. Bay isn't too thrilled with the bathing either but since she can't talk past barely managing to say her name, she can't really object except to fight Blu which he just sees as a pet not being good. Blu doesn't hurt her and takes decent care of her overall but he treats her like a pet. When Blu ends up dropping Bay off at Zane's house and Zane doesn't seem too happy about it, Bay is very unhappy. She avoids Zane but his son, Draven seems nice so she finds him and befriends him. She manages to convey to Draven that she's intelligent and Draven starts teaching her their language. Zane is around and seems accepting of her and Bay is able to settle in to her new life but knows that soon she'll have to confide in Zane that she's not a pet.
Things come to a head quickly when one of the wild creatures from the wilds around Zane's house manages to climb the wall and threaten Bay and Draven. Bay fends off the creature until Zane shows up and takes it out. After that Bay's secret is out and she explains to Zane what and who she is. He's surprised but has grown attached to her and says she can stay and he'll take care of her. There is the problem that his mating time has come up and it seems to be spiked by her nearness. He explains the issue because if the need to mate overwhelms him he might end up forced to go to the wilds to mate and it could kill him, leaving both Bay and Draven with no one to care for them. Bay doesn't want to go and has found that she likes Zane so she agrees to be with him and spends as much time as she can with him so they can get to know each other better before the mating heat hits him. They eventually come together and have hot monkey sex but they also become more as Zane realizes just what he's been missing in having a female that's weaker and needs his protection and is willing to lavish affection on him all the time. Bay comes to care for Zane and becomes his mate (as well as a substitute mother to Draven) and things look pretty good but there is some drama before everything is settled. There's a few encounters with other alien creatures and also some interaction with a some Zargonnii females that keep things hopping. Bay and Zane come through things well and have a beautiful start to their HEA (with a happy surprise twist that indicates good things for Zane and the other Zargonnii males).
This was a very enjoyable story. I really liked both Bay and Zane and really liked their story. It's on the short side but it didn't feel short, the author did a great job with making the story seem complete even though it was a short one. I'm going to be reading more of the series (I've already bought Book #2 and will be starting it after I finish this review). I'd recommend this book. Thumbs up! :D
This is going to sound weird, but stick with me. The story isn't anything special, but at the same time... it's totally unique. And it's not unique in a bad way. But it's kinda ridiculous, so it's not exactly unique in a good way, either. Let me try to explain a little bit.
Earth is basically kaput and our MC, Bay, escaped for the safe haven of another planet. That planet wasn't so much a safe haven as it was a battlefield and poor Bay is kidnapped - because of... reasons... - and hauled off to be beaten, starved, and then sold at a slave market as a pet. Enter Blu, a Zargonian (or something, I've already closed the file), who's like "I should buy my brother a pet to replace his recently deceased one and this little bald thing will do nicely. SOLD!" Blu takes Bay back to his home planet - after a humiliating chapter of her being treated like a pet with a nose-bops for bad behavior and everything - and dumps her off on his brother Zane's doorstep. Zane has a son, who Bay now... belongs to.
But what is this? Zane's getting turned on by the family pet! That just won't do. Bay finally reveals that she's not a pet, but an intelligent human and bam - let's fuck. Oookay.
*nods* The set up is outrageous. But at the same time, it's entirely plausible. I would not at all be surprised to find out that some aliens keep humans as pets and have no idea we're intelligent beings. And that's what kept me reading. It's like Zane was a human that had found a stray dog... but had never seen a dog before, I guess.
The world that C.L. Scholey created here is weird, but also plausible. The warring sexes and the reasons behind their behavior, though strange and alien, were understandable. Scholey's odd society was interesting, regardless of the fact that most humans would hate it.
The sex scenes, though numerous, were uninspired. Zane actually talks about how sex with another woman felt as he was climaxing inside Bay. *blank stare* Yeah. YEAH. But their relationship was believable and kinda cute. Zane's total bafflement at being around a female was highly entertaining and watching a hardened warrior turn into a vulnerable boy was amusing.
It's a fairly short story, but it ends with the Zargonians searching for more humans to save from various threats and hopefully mate with. So I'm assuming the story continues, probably focusing on one of the other warriors finding his twue wuv.
3 1/2 stars. Not bad but some of the things in this book were hard to believe, and I don't mind having stories with situations or ideas that won't happen in real life but these were kind of out there. I will say this book kept me hooked and reading till late at night, and I loved the different elements of this book. I have said it before but I really appreciate when a book has original ideas in it. The hero was super possessive, so much so he would go into a natural fighting/protective mode for the heroine. The heroine was smart to be thrown on a new planet and everyone thinks your a pet, she not only adapts but thrives.
We also get a whole set of men/aliens in this book who are so fascinated with the heroine since she is the first human they have ever seen, and the heroes son was really sweet and added a lot to this book. Another thing I that bothered me was all the talk about the heroes son's mother. She isn't an ex woman and men live apart and only come together every two years but it was just too much and at times when she shouldn't be talked about. All in all not bad at all what worked for me really worked for me and what didn't wasn't horrible and didn't take me out of the book but it made me say mmmm. I loved seeing the men come into their own since they are in a way being repressed. I'm interested to see what the other books in this series are like.
*I may add more to my review when I am feeling better.
So even though I hadn't reviewed this on GRs once I was into this I realized I had already read it. So it was decent. I really liked the first part where they thought she was a pet and the one guy had bought her for his nephew who had just lost his last alien dog.
Once the hero figured out that she was sentient the story went rapidly downhill. I didn't like the dialog. It was a whole bunch of unrealistic long winded explanations and then insta love.
The h has been captured off world, sold to a male of a different species, who has gifted her to the H and his son, as a pet. She can't speak at first due to the abuse she has suffered, and of course she had to learn a common language. The little boy and she bonded first, then her presence causes a physical change to the H. She's great, smart and patient and loves the H. He's enthralled by her, and I liked how she protected his son, was kind to the H and others. It's scifi, sweeter than most, with an heroine who was smart. I didn't get the connection to the title, the H didn't appear to be a mercenary.
I usually don’t read books like this… books that require such imagination with its planet and alien life. My brain hurts lol. I wish there was more time spent in the beginning stages, I really enjoyed that part of the book. 3.5 stars
Bay's Mercenary (Unearthly World, #1) by C. L. Scholey
4.5 Stars!!!
This is a 'breakoff' series about the same group of Earth survivors from the 'New World' series. It's not necessary to read that series because the author does fill us in some on the background there, but it would be helpful. Also, I liked most of the books in that series a lot.
Bay is a woman that escaped the devastation on Earth only to find herself in a cave on the planet Ulsy hiding from the warring Tonans and Castians. She is captured by a rogue Tonan warrior and taken to a far-off planet and sold at a bazaar as a 'pet' to a huge, furry, Zaronnii warrior, Blu.
Blu thinks the small Earth female is a pet and would be a novel replacement for a pet Toff that his nephew and brother, Zane, recently lost. Due to injuries to her throat received from the Tonan, and also the language barrier, Bay cannot speak to show the Zaronnii she is an ntelligent sentient being.
If you like space-alien/adventure books that have HEAs, I think this is an interesting one to read. Unlike the 'space alien hunks' the Castians, the Zaronnii aren't much on looks, but they are big and lovable.
The world-building on the planet and the Zaronnii social structure are very well done and are different from anything else I've read to date. The Zaronnii learn about themselves, as well as about humans. Bay discovers a new power over a scary new enemy. I will absolutely be buying the next book.
OK, the writing wasn't great but the story line was quite original and it held my attention the whole way through. The planet they live on is jungle-like with lots of scary and very deadly creatures.
I love me some sexy aliens and Zane is just a big hairy sweetie. His son Draven is also a cutie pie and Bay quickly takes up a maternal role with him. He is the one who learns the truth about Bay...she's not really a small fragile pet, but rather an intelligent women that Zane can't seem to resist.
I'm curious to find out what happened to Earth...there were not many details.
The beginning bit where everyone thought she was a pet was quite interesting, but after her new "owner" figures out she's a real person and that's why he's been getting constant boners it all rapidly goes down hill. The plot was light, the romance was light, the character development was non-existent. At least it was a short read.
No me he sentido perdida para nada.
Oh! This was so interesting!! and funny! Though it did feel like this was an inside-private joke for me cause I guess people didn't like it as much?
I totally get that though cause the romance was non-existent and the "relationship" was just weird. She felt like a glorified child's toy/companion that just so happens to scratch the dad's itch. Ewwwwwwwww that sounds so wrong on so many levels.
But I really enjoyed the "human species" as pet aspect of the story. It was so cute and H.I.L.A.R.I.O.U.S!!
I am really craving alien, sci-fi romance! But there is just not a lot of decent writing out there. Bay's Mercenary seemed promising at first. It had a pretty funny set up- one that could actually happen in a scifi world! The heroine, Bay, is taken captive in a inter-civilizational conflict and sold across the galaxy to an alien buyer - but as a pet not a slave! Her buyer thinks she's cute- and no smarter than a dog. This promises so much humor and room for exploration of language, intelligence and societal norms, doesn't it?
Ugh, but the story just fell so flat as soon as the heroine begins to communicate with the hero. Dialogue is not the author's strength. Bay has been learning the alien language with her "new owner", the alien-hero's young son. After a few weeks, she decides its not fair to ask the boy to keep keeping her secret and just starts talking. The hero, Zane, is naturally a bit surprised. But not so surprised that he doesn't immediately start thinking about banging her.
"Pets don't talk."
"I'm not a pet. I'm a woman and intelligent enough to learn your language. How is it you can be so narrow-minded as to think there isn't other intelligent life out there?"
The heroine sure doesn't give the hero a lot of slack here. I mean, she's been pretending to be this man's family dog for the last few weeks. I think he's entitled to be a little skeptical of her status as "intelligent life".
Even weirder, the initial conversation between the hero and heroine immediately gets down to brass tacks on their mutual species sex lives and reproductive cycles. Because when you find out your pet is sentient new race- that's first on the agenda! And btw, establishing her as your son's new mother and giving her an ultimatum about sex are #2 and #3!
Anyway, I know this is a silly fantasy. And it was enjoyable enough to read... I just get bummed when books don't really explore any new ground and stay firmly in the FLUFF category.
