Virtual Reality

Rate this book
Normally cheery and sweet (if not a little bit reserved) Valerie Barrett hits an all time low when the year long love of her life, Dorel Murray, ends their relationship by email. A visit to her doctor provides her with a way to escape her ever plummeting mood in the form of some tablets, but she can't decide if it really would be for the best to take them.

When another way of escape presents itself to her in the form of an online world called 'Virtual Reality' Valerie decides she'd like to try that first. But as the boundaries between her real life and her virtual life blur and become harder to identify, will it really be the saviour she first thought it could be?

Can it really make everything better or is it possible that living a virtual reality could make everything a whole lot worse?

Sonia's Bio

Sonia Loren was born and lives in London, England. She is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with an interest in relational dynamics. She fused her love for her work and her love for writing in her début fictional novel Dig Deeper.

My Story

As a child I loved to read. It began with playing at 'teachers' with my teddy bears. I would come home from school, line them all up on the carpet in the living room and re-enact story time. As I got older I would visit the library as often as I could and remember one of the happiest days of my childhood was getting to the age when I was allowed to take out a larger number of books than they had previously allowed me. I remember walking home with my pile of books; joyous at the number of stories I held in my hands and excited about the worlds I was about to enter through their numerous pages.

That love for reading developed into a love for writing. I was amazed by the idea that someone could put pen to paper and create a whole set of people and situations that I loved to get lost in. I wanted to try it myself to see if I could create a world that others might one day get lost in too. At age 11 I began writing short stories and didn't ever share them until I was about 16 or 17. The joy I got from creating characters and scenarios was enough for me for a while but I always thought 'One day I will write a novel and let others get lost in the world that's in my head!'

I tried writing a novel a couple of times before finally finishing my début book, Dig Deeper. Things kept getting in the way; lost notes, not having had a good storyboard to begin with. Finally, with Dig Deeper, I managed to get the preparations right and completed my first novel! I have now written two; Dig Deeper and Virtual Reality. The third is in progress!

Read this book in almost one sitting. Valerie Barrett is in emotional turmoil after being dumped by her boyfriend Dorel. She finds comfort in the online game Virtual Reality, where she reinvents herself as Vivacious Veronica. As we go through the different stages of her heartbreak, you can't help but will Val to a happy ending, whilst also hoping certain characters (who shall remain nameless - no spoilers) will get their come uppance.

This was a great read, funny, with situations everyone can relate to (I especially liked the bootcamp scenes). And anyone who has ever been through a break up will totally get Val's need to reinvent herself. However, the use of doing it via an online game makes this book refreshingly different from any other heart break story.

Right until this last page this book gave you little surprises, Sonia Loren has a great talent for pulling you into the story, the easy and witty dialogue between the characters makes the story flow effotlessly - can't wait for the next book
