On the cold North Pacific, the crew of the Setsot hunt for the most valuable substance on Earth. In 16th century Peru, a Catholic missionary tries to bring hope to those enslaved to mine silver. Beneath the dark water flows the eversong that unites them.
Eversong is a complicated, thought provoking novella that entangles concerns of morality, religion, culture, and environmental science all in one short read. Although a little bit difficult to get into at first, once you grasp the gist of this cleverly written little book, it just pulls you forward. I love how new meaning was given to ancient native rituals and how they were seamlessly incorporated into future times to show how situations taken for granted in the past can have a mass and deadly effect on future generations. It was interesting to be able to perceive the awareness of the mammals and to witness how they were able to affect human behavior by way of their beautiful eversong.. Albeit a bit challenging when reading due to some of the language used, it is the afterthought this book leaves you with that authenticates its true artistry.
I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads.
A very interesting read. Intelligent, challenging, and ultimately very satisfying. I haven't stopped thinking about the ideas and characters since I finished reading it. Now I have to go check out what else Geoffrey Cole has written.
Nice short read, good fun. Before reading I would recommend skimming this article on Mercury poisoning, it provides a lot of context and is quite interesting. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
I received a copy of this book though first reads. I am very impressed! It is honestly one of the best books I've read all year. I've been thinking about what I was going to say in this review for awhile, but I can't come up with anything that will do it justice. It's very thought-provoking. It tells the story of two different groups of people and at first they don't seem like they relate, but at the end of the story they relate in a very unique way. For such a short book, it has a lot of depth to it. I definitely recommend reading this book if you enjoy speculative fiction and checking out other books by this author as well.
