Kile Veller continues her quest to become a Hunter in spite of the obstacle set in her way, but those obstacles are nothing compared to what she is about to encounter. As the final goal of graduating the Academy gets closer, the outside world is changing. There are things that have been set into motion that can not be stopped. Hunters have been slain or have gone missing. Pirates have once again been seen on the southern seas. The valrik have crossed into the Denal province and the uhyre, long thought gone from the world are amassing in the wastelands under a single shadow that has touch even the cadets at the Academy. The rumors of war on the western border may actually be real, and if all that wasn’t enough, she still has to pass her final evaluation.
First sentences Morgan set the book down on the table that wasn’t there and flipped a few pages forward, then a few pages back. It was obvious he couldn’t find what he was looking for, but he refused to give up. Kile sat in the overstuffed winged back chair with her cup of rosemary tea minus the rum watching him with little interest. She didn’t really like the taste of the tea but thought it impolite to refuse the offer. The globe of fire that had once warmed the small tower in the dead of winter was flickering blue and was now cooling the same room. She wondered if she could get one of these for her cell as the hot summer days made sleeping almost unbearable.

A guilty pleasure book. Better than the first, still in the mood of Arrows of the Queen. Definite flaws: slow plot, some strong characters being cardboard-cutout dense (though that might be just her point of view), older teenagers with only the slightest hint of hormones (which felt odd even if it was a relief to have it missing). And serious lack of an editor. Homonyms, transpositions (some unintentionally funny), some missing words and some blatantly wrong words where the similar sounding intended word was obvious. Somewhat compensated for by correct use of "flautist". But it kept me up until almost 1 so did its job very well. I didn't deduct stars for editing but that was a distraction.
Some moments are little predictable. Such as Carter getting jealous. Glad they were able to move pass the green eyed monster.
I like that she sought help when she inadvertently merged with grim.
I even found the puns amusing. Mind you I did grow up on Piers Anthony.
One thing that irked me was that this needed a great editor. At times I had to stop and take a moment to translate. Like, "kile wasn't sure if she was looking forward to this day or not. Master Pike informed her they were BRINING a few horses..."
A nice coming of age story that I really enjoyed reading. I usually dislike books where the antagonist are bullies. It makes me feel too much the helplessness of the character to enjoy the rest of the story. This was nicely readable, and the story really worked well, and the characters moved in a believable way.
I also liked the maturity and growth of the characters.
I really enjoyed the story and the characters but it was difficult to get past all of the editing problems.. A simple reread before release would have captured most of the mistakes.
I read this book because my neice begged me to. After the last book, I was finished with this author and the disrespect he has for his craft and the intelligence of his readers. I refuse to allow my neice to read anything else written by this hack... she might start thinking that his countless errors are justifiable or acceptable. Thankfully, I've received a refund for both books.
I read this book several years ago but needed a book that I could reread so I could put down when I needed to. I really liked the series but the typos misspellings and just plain careless repeating of mistakes were hard to overlook. I marked most this time. Would suggest a good proof reader. Story is better without them.
I am a gracious reader And I am somewhat picky about what I like to read I really enjoy this series and it doesn't seem to have as much popularity as it deserves
