The Apple
A Play by Jack Gelber

A strange drama group assembles in a coffee shop. First comes Ace, a breezy-talking Negro and the trouper of the lot, who tries to keep things moving. Jabez, the Con Man, arrives with the mannequin which will play an important part in the evening's action. Anna, the seductive Oriental-American, brings a bowl of apples; she's "in charge" tonight. Ajax, the nihilist, brings Mr. Stark, a spastic who "speaks Etruscan," as his replacement, but sticks around to break him in. Iris the Hustler comes in late; she has been trying to sell her body (to a university for "scientific purposes"). Anna is getting the action started ("the scene is a dentist's office" when Tom, a drunken nuisance from the audience, jumps in, and another wild Gelber evening in the theater is under way.
