Peril at Granite Peak

Rate this book
Joe and Frank’s winter break skiing holiday turns to horror in this Hardy Boys adventure—a fresh approach to a classic series.

Frank and Joe are thrilled to spend winter break hitting the slopes at the Granite Peak Lodge ski resort. What could be better than an action-packed week of skiing and snowboarding set against a scenic mountain landscape?

But their plans hit an unexpected bump when a blizzard blows in, closing the roads and leaving the boys stranded in the lodge with several others. Meanwhile, a series of deadly mishaps threatens to sabotage the resort—and the lives of its trapped guests.

First, a fellow vacationer nearly freezes solid when he’s locked out during the raging storm. Then, the lodge’s electricity is cut off, broken glass turns up in the breakfast waffles, and a resort employee is buried in a snowdrift. Who’s behind these sinister acts? Is the culprit trapped in the lodge with them? The Hardys are determined to find out—before they’re caught in an avalanche of danger.

Franklin W. Dixon is the pen name used by a variety of different authors who were part of a team that wrote The Hardy Boys novels for the Stratemeyer Syndicate (now owned by Simon & Schuster). Dixon was also the writer attributed for the Ted Scott Flying Stories series, published by Grosset & Dunlap.
Canadian author Leslie McFarlane is believed to have written the first sixteen Hardy Boys books, but worked to a detailed plot and character outline for each story. The outlines are believed to have originated with Edward Stratemeyer, with later books outlined by his daughters Edna C. Squier and Harriet Stratemeyer Adams. Edward and Harriet also edited all books in the series through the mid-1960s. Other writers of the original books include MacFarlane's wife Amy, John Button, Andrew E. Svenson, and Adams herself; most of the outlines were done by Adams and Svenson. A number of other writers and editors were recruited to revise the outlines and update the texts in line with a more modern sensibility, starting in the late 1950s.
The principal author for the Ted Scott books was John W. Duffield.

A nice quick read, or rather listen. First off the guy who does the audio really could have worked on Chet's voice he sounded old…lol…and guys who were older than him sounded younger. Honestly, Chet sounded the oldest of anyone…haha…rant aside this was still a fun book.

Characters:
Joe and Frank are both great. I like the brotherly relationship and banter.
Chet was a good guy and funny at times even if his voice annoyed me…lol…poor guy too there at the end.
Cody was nice and loved his dog!
Josie was sweet!
And overall the characters were nice.

Themes:
Not really any…it's a secular mystery. *shrugs*

Romance:
Mentions of two people copying up together in public and they are married.

Language:
N/A

Overall:
This was a fun book with a nice mystery. I was slightly suspicious of the culprit but not a lot…I kind of didn't start to see it coming until about 70 or 75% into the story. Overall, it was enjoyable.

This book is about the hardy boys who went on a trip for skiing and to have fun but eventually they got stuck in a blizzard. They went through hard times and finally fixed the strange things happening around the mountain and got everyone back home safely.

First off, I am extremely disappointed. These are not how the Hardy Boys book use to be. From the start of this whole new Hardy Boy Adventures series. Book 1 was the best. It was okay in books 3 and 4, and 5 was the worst-or so I thought. Yeah, I get to this and start reading. Started good. The storyline seemed good. Haha, yeah, just read further. Let's change the subject for just a second. Remember reading the orignal Hardy Boys series? Yeah, well if you haven't read those-go read them rather that this...this...none worthy of 5 stars junk. (and I really hate calling this book...junk.) The first reviewer to rate this book on goodreads, yeah, gave a rating of 5 stars. No. No. No. Unless this book is rewritten better---This book will NEVER deserve 5 stars, let alone 4! This is just plain sad and I really HATE saying it. Okay, back to talking about the orignal series. Remember how close Frank and Joe are? Remember how they every now and then do joke about each other, but in a NICE way. Yeah, forget that here. Chapter 4-the third paragraph too! (The chapters switch back and forth between Frank and Joe. They are spoken in first person.)
Note: Frank talks in the second paragraph so I have to share that too.

Okay, so Chapter 4 starts off with Joe asking if they can go down a ski hill one more time. Fast forward to the second paragraph with Frank speaking:

[Frank checked his watch. "Better not. We've got a long drive ahead of us, and we don't want to take a chance of getting caught out in the roads when things get bad."]
Note: A giant snow storm is coming their way.

(Here's Joe speaking.)
[That was my brother-Mr. Cautious. Mr. Responsible. Mr. Annoying. But in this case, I knew he was right.]

So hold up! Joe, you are being a complete jerk. (alright, not a complete jerk-but still!) not once, but twice! This is not the normal Joe AT ALL. I lost the place of the second example. So when I find it I'll update the review.

Either way-the storyline started out good and then just went downhill fast. I noted at the beginning of this review, there will be no spoilers. Therefore, I cannot share the person behind it all. But I can say this: The storyline was horrible. It was good, until further on. The whole idea on the motive the culprit did was he/she did was plain STUPID. This is just wrong as to how badly it was. Yeah, its not nessesarily badly written. But the storyline-it was good but the motive and the REST of the storyline wasn't very good.

A note to the Franklin W. Dixon(s):
Since childhood, I have loved the Hardy Boys series (original and into however many was added with it, but the orignal is the best.), I was really excited to hear there was another series coming out. I read the first and knew that it wasn't the best. But it wasn't bad at all. I just didn't like the whole deal thing. I kept reading in hopes you would get rid of the deal thing and it would be good like the first one. I have been disappointed and I thought the last one, number 5 was the worst there could be. I was dead wrong when I was reading this book. Now if you can come up with a good storyline, I'm sure better reviews will come your way.

This is a good way to ruin the Frank and Joe I once knew, and to ruin my enjoyment that I use to have. I might as well going and start reading the original series (which I own) so I can get enjoyment again. I said once that I wanted to own ALL of the Hardy Boys series. Well, I don't want to own this one. Maybe only the first and second. Sorry, but I am just so disappointed.

This book is officially my first Hardy Boys novel to read! I picked it because I wanted to read a story with skiing in it. Frank and Joe are brothers (its' not clear how old they are)....possibly 19?20?. They have come to a ski resort in Vermont with a friend Chet. Chet was invited by his camp counselor from a few years ago to come try out his family ski resort. Chet must be around 22? Frank and Joe enjoy being unofficial detectives. The story turns into an agatha christie who dunnit novel when a "storm of the century" makes all but a dozen people leave the resort for home. Those dozen people and the resort skeleton staff are plagued by near misses and other mysteries. Joe and Frank alternate chapters as first person narratives.
Even though this story was more about the mysterious happening surrounding the Lodge and people in it during this storm, I enjoyed the beginning parts about skiing and ski slopes and the other add on descriptions of snow and blizzard behavior. One of my favorite characters is a dog named Blizzard. All mysterious are solved in the end. While I had trouble following some parts in the middle (mostly due to the change in speaker each chapter), overall I enjoyed the story and I would even read the book again! Thank you Franklin Dixon.

The Hardy Boys Adventures is on a roll. Coming off the very strong book 4 (Into Thin Air) the series outdid itself and created an even better book 5. The secret to the novel’s success is twofold—a great setting and a problem that it was totally plausible for teenaged boys to resolve.

The setting is a ski lodge that’s having financial problems and is owned and operated by the family of a friend of a friend. I don’t ski myself, but I find ski lodges to be a great setting for mysteries because they are instantly isolatable with the onset of a good storm. That’s what happens here, but not before some low-key trouble begins to flair up at the lodge. Someone removes a sign warning of dangerous conditions on a ski slope. Small items owned by the guests begin to disappear. And the world’s most annoying customer is getting on everyone’s nerves by finding fault with anyone and everything.

Then the snowstorm sets in and the lodge quickly depopulates as people flee the storm. This conveniently (and plausibly) lowers the number of suspects as the problems become more serious and the boys begin to suspect that someone is sabotaging the ski lodge—but why? This is a good mystery from the start to finish and the solution lives up to the hype.

Everywhere brothers Frank and Joe Hardy go they get caught in a mystery. This series is an updated version of the original Hardy Boys mysteries. It's mostly the same, just set in the 2000s.

Joe and Frank are invited along on a ski vacation with their friend Chet. After they arrive, the storm of the century is predicted to hit, but they get stranded when Chet's junk of a car won't start. Odd things are happening around the resort and the Hardy brothers feel compelled to investigate. A danger sign is removed at the top of a closed slope. A man goes outside during the storm and gets locked out. Windows get left open and glass is found in the waffle mix. Everyone at the resort is a suspect. It could be a complaining guest, newlywed couple, waitress/maid, groundsman or teenage girl. The Hardy Boys will figure it out before anyone else.

Hardy Boys Adventures, Book 5: Peril at Granite Peak is the 2nd book in this series that I've rated 5 stars so far. (The 1st was was Hardy Boys Adventures, Book 3: Into Thin Air.) It's a documented phenomenon that the best Hardy Boys books are those where Frank and Joe travel outside of Bayport. That applies to this book. The titular Granite Peak is a ski resort in Vermont. Frank and Joe are there with their friend Chet. But just as they're about to head back home to Bayport, a blizzard hits. So, they, the owners and staff of the lodge, along with several other guests, are snowed in. Then strange things start to happen. Everyone is under suspicion. In that way, this book felt reminiscent of an Agatha Christie book, which I just loved! It was awesome!

Well plotted and clean (no gore, vileness, etc,). Perfect interlude for mom’s at home with youngsters not in school because of whatever virus is loosened (come on, ya know this is not gonna be the last). Books and audiobooks like this will keep them entertained and not frightened out of their wits. Audio well narrated by Tim Gregory (who sounds like a Hardy Boy). Well done.

Better than previous ones. Here you have a mystery, but some unnecessary side plot lines. At some point they actually separate to investigate, which needs to happen more. Two people tailing someone or searching rooms looks rather suspicious.

This was my favorite out of all the books so far. The characters were a lot more developed and I felt as if I could actually try and figure out who the culprits were before the book decided to end. I am very happy that I managed to figure it out before the two amateur sleuths I admire. Great job.

Love the Hardy Boys. Back when I was young I loved Nancy Drew books, but now as I got older, I believe I like the Hardy boys more.

For this book I think it was well thought out and very smart. Personally I enjoyed this a lot and I think this is probably my favorite hardy boys book to date.

This book is about the Hardy boys at a ski lodge that is not doing good with business. The boys find multiple mysteries at the lodge one being, they find a ribbon under a rock. The ribbon was suppose to let people know not to go down that specific slope but, someone hid it out of site. The boys get trapped at the place because of a snow blizzard. One of the lodges guest almost freezes to death after he is trapped outside during the snowstorm. In the end it turns out the dog, Toy Toy, was causing all the accidents.
I liked how the book had many different suspects then just one like a normal book would have. I liked that the book had lot’s of action like when Joe saved that guy from almost dying when the guy went down the wrong slope. I was really happy when the book added the power outage because that always adds a lot of suspense in a story. The book had many good qualities but my favorite thing about the book was that they tried to keep the same old “Hardy Boy way.”
I was really disturbed when I found out that the main suspect was a dog. I wish that they would have made the culprit a quest or a worker at the lodge. I didn’t like how the lodge owners were not worried about anything during the blizzard it took away from the, “fear point,” of the story. I wish that the book would have had more suspense than it did I felt like the book was dragged along.

Hardy boys that the kids enjoyed reading with mom. Good pace, although I did find it a bit confusing with all of the characters -- poppy in particular seemed superfluous. But the kids never noticed and enjoyed it. That's the most important part, right!?

I really quick re-listen while I was sick; I always liked this one because it was sat in the winter in a ski lodge! But I seem to remember it being more fleshed out and longer… it is for kids though, so maybe my expectations were too high 😂
