Herman Heijermans (3 December 1864 – 22 November 1924), was a Dutch playwright, novelist and sketch story writer, who is considered to be the greatest Dutch dramatist of the modern era.

Heijermans began his literary career in 1893 as a theater critic for De Telegraaf. His fierce criticisms often stirred controversy. Heijermans soon decided to start writing plays himself, most of which revolved around social and ethical issues. His first big success, Ghetto, is set in the Orthodox Jewish community of rag merchants, while his most successful play, Op hoop van Zegen (The Good Hope) was a strong indictment of the exploitation of Dutch fishermen.

In addition to his plays, many short stories - most of them written under the pseudonym Samuel Falkland - and several novels are part of Heijermans' oeuvre. After his death of cancer in 1924, the SDAP organised a funeral procession between Zandvoort and Amsterdam, which attracted a great amount of admirers.

Minder erg dan verwacht lmao

In dit naturalistische drama beschrijft Heijermans het leven zowel van de arme vissers als hun families. Naturalisme in dit werk wordt gekenmerkend door het gebruik van een dialect als ook de beschrijving van de menselijke alledaagsheid. De tragische zit in het feit dat vele jongemannen in de slechtste omstandigeden als matrozen moesten werken om te kunnen overleven. De meesten zouden op de zee sneuvelen, en de einigen die baat erbij hadden waren de scheepseigenaren die het verzekeringsgeld ontvingen. Vele vrouwen werden daarbij weduwen, moeders verloren hun kinderen en de armoede van die families werd aldus groter. Ze konden er niets tegen doen, ze konden niet aan het noodlot ontsnappen. De enige wat ze konden doen was te bidden en op Gods zegen te wachten. Toen werd de vis inderdaad duur betaald.

Het enige interessante aan dit stuk vond ik het thema, het bespreken van de oneerlijkheid van de arbeidersklasse. Het paste goed bij wat ik voor mij leeslijst zocht: vroege socialistische ideeën. Geert's woede vond ik een interessant en erg begrijpelijk aspect.
Het taalgebruik, de verhaallijn en de karakters, echter, vond ik eerlijk gezegd erg saai. Ik moet toegeven dat ik ook gewoon niet van Nederlandse vissersdorpen rond 1900 hou - het is iets wat mij echt hélemaal niet boeit, dus dat is niet de 'schuld' van dit boek.

"Op hoop van zegen" (or "The Good Hope") by Herman Heijermans is known as the most succesfull Dutch theatre play internationally. The play tells the story of the lives of poor fisherman around the year 1900. Kniertje, a widow, has lost her husband and two of her sons to the sea. Schipowner Clemens Bos asks her if her youngest child, Barend, and later also her older child, Geert (who was imprisoned), want to work on his ship (The Good Hope). Even though her sons refuse to go on board, she obligates them to sail on the ship. Only, the ship was in very bad state and (not really spoiler alert) eventually sinks during a storm.

At first, I knew nothing about the plot, except it was about the cruel lives of fishermen, and that a guy from my highschool read and absolutely hated it. From the beginning, it is already clear how the play is going to end. There is a lot of foreshadowing indicating the ship will eventually sink and Kniertje's two sons die in the process. That does not make the play less sad; the ending actually tore me apart, because this woman has to re-live the same she did twelve years prior to the events in the play and her life is basically fully destroyed.

Heijermans shows in this play the injustice and poverty in the fishing industry, how the shipowners are negligent in maintaining their ships. As a result, the ships become floating coffins, destroying the lives of several families in the process. I love the way in which this play is written; it is lively and not overly dramatic. It is a honest portrayal, a glimpse into a past of which we certainly can be glad it in the past. Also, the conservations between Geert and Bos/Kniertje, in which Geert takes a more socialist approach to the matter, are extremely well-done.

My father's family were herring fishers out of Vlaardingen so this play really resonates with me. I read it at school. I was given the part of Kniertje at which my schoolmates laughed because she's old and pathetic, but in retrospect I'm flattered, as my teacher saw acting ability in me (I did amdram later in life). Now, at a much later age it really grabs me more than then. No wonder my family were socialists - something I'm proud of now.
Not having lived in Holland for 50 years I found the language difficult at times, but as a play, I think it works beautifully. The end is so understated it broke my heart.
Coffin ships still existed in the early 80s. In a mad mood I signed on as cook on a tramp steamer out of Harwich and was lucky to survive the trip. The fight against capitalism goes on, and on, and on.

Op hoop van zegen is een realistisch boek over het leven van een vissersfamilie. Als de reders het niet uit maakte hoe het met hun matrozen zou vergaan als ze op zee waren komen er ongelukken van. En dat laat dit boek erg goed zien.

ik vond de gesprekken tussen Truus, Kniertje, Mathilde, Clementine, Jo en Marietje erg amusant om te lezen.

Een toneelstuk uit 1900, veelal in dialect. Dit maakt het lastig lezen. Desondanks kon ik me goed verplaatsen in het stuk. De onzekerheid en wanhoop of de vissers nog thuis zouden komen of niet, de uitzichtloosheid van de situatie.
Dit boek deed mij even stilstaan hoe snel de wereld is veranderd in 125 jaar en "hoe duur de vis betaald wordt".

Taai om doorheen te komen en soms is het dialect lastig te begrijpen. Als je er eenmaal inzit, is het een aangrijpend verhaal van de arme vissersfamilies waarvan mannen en zonen steeds weer het risico moeten nemen de zee op te gaan, ondanks de gevaren.

My two stars for this book have nothing to do with the writer's skills, just with my dislike for plays in general and for the scene in which this particular one was set.

When I read it, during my grammar school years, there was nothing in it that I could relate to, so it was quite hard to read, although the language used was not very hard.
It was just an excersise in reading literature, plays, analysing, giving opinions and reasoning behind them.

Heb het boek niet gelezen. Voor Nederlands was dit een verplicht boek, maar we konden kiezen of je naar het toneelstuk ging of dat je het boek lezen. Ik zelf ben naar de toneelstuk gegaan, zoals de meeste. Ik ben blij dat ik het boek niet gelezen heb, vond namelijk het toneelstuk erg saai.
