The Emissary

Rate this book
In her debut novel, Patricia Cori weaves her visionary message into a page-turning fantasy adventure that speaks to the very soul of the planet.

Within minutes of one another, three bone-chilling events take place around the globe. In Los Angeles, hundreds of blackbirds drop out of the sky, zapped to their death, mid-flight; in Maine, miles of beach are covered in tens of thousands of dead fish; in New Zealand, 150 whales and dolphins lie dead or dying on the beach.

Jamie Hastings, a renowned psychic researcher and telepath, forges a deep soul connection with the dying whales that leads to her troubled journey at sea as a consultant for USOIL, a Texas based oil company that's drilling in the most pristine waters of the Pacific Northwest, looking for oil--or so it seems. A bizarre unfolding of events aboard ship sparks the unraveling of a truly evil plan of a secret government that is intent upon silencing the music of the oceans and destroying all life on the planet.

As impossible as it is to imagine anything as sinister as the shadow Jamie faces in her mission to save the earth from the doomsday weapon bearing down on the world, the fact is that it is actually happening, at this very moment, while most of the world is asleep--or simply unaware.

One woman has been chosen to be the voice, against the forces of evil, of the cherished creatures of the sea. She is the emissary.

The question is: Is there still time for her to stop it?

I never thought I'd like reading a book about whales, dolphins and orcas or a psychic who had a connection with them. I found "The Emissary" a very fascinating read and one I'd read again somewhere down the road. It isn't a typical read for me but I read it for an interview I'm doing for my radio show. Once I got into the story, I was hooked. I fell in love with the characters and the mission of Jamie Hastings, the psychic who was on a mission to help the animals she had a passion for. Patricia Cori definitely has the gift of a storyteller. A storyteller that is a pleasure for me to read.

I went into this book thinking that it was going to be an epic tale similar to movies like The Day After Tomorrow and 2012. Huge calamities happening all around the world and no one knows why. Well, the first couple instances happen right at the beginning of the book….such as the dead birds falling from the sky, huge animals beaching themselves, and all the dead fish. Jamie gains a deep connection with the whales that die on the beach in New Zealand, so much so that she decides to start getting the word out and starting a foundation. She gets roped into helping USOIL CEO Mat and she gets more that she ever expected from the voyage.

The book really takes off when Jamie gets onto the USOIL ship. The men, the ocean, the dynamic is all incredible! Immediately you love Captain Jim and his loyal dog, Fin. The Captain likes strong-minded individuals with a backbone and that is most definitely what Jamie is. The three of them together are some of my favorite scenes. For being a strong and confident women Jamie is also full of great emotion. Being a psychic she has a deeper connection to earth and its inhabitants. She has a beautiful ability to hear the voice less and that is how she becomes The Emissary.

We are given, excitement, mystery, deception, beautiful moments, and great sadness. Towards the end the story does hint at extraterrestrial beings and that fact that we are not alone….but I found the story to be more about gaining a deeper connection and being more conscious to the effect we have on the things around us. It is fore sure an enlightening tale that leaves you a tad sad but feeling that you witnesses something magical.

I found the beginning full of lengthy descriptive passages that held back the pace. I kept anticipating plot developments that never really got going. Each new narrator is introduced by pages of personal history, characteristics, and physical descriptions. Lots of telling, not showing.

Additionally, I'm not the right audience for the spiritualism of this novel - I often like reading Chosen One stories (more Hero and/or prophecy, less spiritual savior) but I'm not a fan of Savior stories, and this one felt preachy to me. In fact, it felt as though I was being beaten over the head with the notion that the main character had been Born Special To Save The Earth. Too much space given to what made her special, not enough space given to the special actions she takes to save the world.

In short, I was not interested enough in the plot or the characters to continue this one.

Engaging tale based on real life earth crises. The slow killing of the planet.

The cover made me anxious to read this that I had a hard time being patient with waiting for my place in the library queue to come up. Anything with whales especially in showing intelligence and any semblance of interspecies communication, I'm a fiend for.

However, this book gets 4 instead of 5 stars from me because it's heavy handed on mysticism melodrama. It appears like ink blots on a page which made it easy to skim past when it appeared and get on with the story.

For once, my eyes fell on the blurbs before reading the book and I was surprised to see that the majority of them came from actors and others in the entertainment industry (ones who've written books as well apparently) and not so much other authors and reviewers. I don't think less of the actors' opinions. Simply notable in that for once I looked and noticed the difference.

This is an amazing, beautiful book about the importance of understanding nature with elements of fantasy mixed in. It is not overbearing at all but rather a delightful read for anyone. The writing was perfect aside from a few typos and name consistency errors. The characters were truly interesting and certainly likeable. The plot was exciting and not as predictable as one might imagine, and while it may have left room for a sequel, it sufficiently wrapped everything up in one book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. Would I read more by this author? Most certainly. Would I recommend this book to others? Without a doubt.

I wish I could like this book more.
All throughout I was torn between resonating with the ideas the author wants to put forth and the empty cliches she's using to express them. Naive writing but interesting ideas. I do believe that fiction can help people become more empathic to world problems and, in general, more emotionally intelligent but the level of artistry in this book barely convinced me.
Still an enjoyable summer read with some beautiful descriptions of the music of the see.
