In the year 2051, some people have a second pulse…
Like all who have “the pulse,” Faith Daniels and Dylan Gilmore have telekinetic powers—they can move objects with their minds. But there are five “second pulses” in the world who have an even greater power: Almost nothing can harm them. They are virtually indestructible.
Both Faith and Dylan have the second pulse. But the other side has second pulses, too, and they’ve been training for a war that has been brewing their entire lives. As Dylan executes a plan to infiltrate enemy grounds, he’ll have to face his only weakness, and a family secret that will threaten his very existence.
Together, Faith and Dylan are the only hope this world has left, but they must go their separate ways in order to accomplish their plan. Will their love survive?
With richly developed characters and heart-pounding action scenes, the second book in Patrick Carman’s Pulse trilogy continues the electrifying dystopian story of love and revenge.
I have been a lifelong writer and storyteller. Salem, Oregon is where I spent my formative years and I graduated from Willamette University. After college, I spent a decade living in Portland, Oregon where I worked in advertising, game design, and technology.
I've written young adult and children's books for Scholastic, Little Brown Books For Young Readers and Katherine Tegen Books/ HarperCollins Publishers.
I've been fortunate enough to have had some bestselling series work: The Land of Elyon, Atherton, Elliot’s Park, 39 Clues, and Skeleton Creek. Here's a fun note...the books have been translated into approximately two dozen languages. Currently I'm developing a few new-media projects. Check out DARK EDEN to experience this type of cross-platform project.
When I'm not writing or creating a story, I spend my free time supporting literacy campaigns and community organizations, fly fishing, playing basketball and tennis, doing crosswords, watching movies, dabbling in video games, reading (lots), and (more than anything else) spending time with my wife and two daughters.
Oh dear. I really didn’t enjoy this book, and I’m not looking forward to the third one. At first I was pretty ambivalent, I didn’t care about the characters, I didn’t care what happened to them, but there was nothing really offensive happening. If anything I was just confused, as I really didn’t understand what was happening. Then I started to get quite annoyed and bored. Prisons being lifted into the air, the throwing around of washing machines and train cars with just their minds, random air attacks, and other such rubbish just irritated me.
"Clooger, stay low, Airspace is crawling with drones. Must be thirty of them now. They're on to us."
Sounds like Top Gun but it really isn't. Give me Tom Cruise any day over this.
I have just read Pulse, and let's just say I will grin and smile like an idiot when I get my hands on this book. I call the "Pulse" in the book the Force like in Star Wars because They are almost the same thing.
I am just absolutely fascinated with dystopian young adult novels. They all seem to have the perfect mix of romance, drama, and excitement and Tremor is HIGH on the list. WOW. I absolutely loved Pulse when I reviewed it so I knew I couldn't wait to get my hands on the sequel, Tremor and I was so right. Tremor is a phenomenally written young adult dystopian story. The characters are incredible and the plot is so full of twists and turns. I also love how technology has evolved so much in this futuristic world. Technology plays such a huge part in our society now and just the thought that one day it could affect us like it affects these characters is....WILD..
"EVERYONE FEELS THE TREMOR. FEW KNOW ITS POWER."
It is very rare for a sequel to overcome its predeccsor but Tremor does. I believe it was even better than Pulse and really brings you into the story and the characters lives. The characters are all so phenomenal and are so deeply woven into this story.
"There will be five. Five second pulses, he had told her. No more, no less. It is ordained. Two will be twins, so really in a sense, there will be four. One of these two is a doppelganger, a black mirror, a balance."
Faith is just a remarkable character who is strong, independent, and has overcome so many trials. She is a survivor who knows exactly the risks she has to take to overcome the evil in the world and help to bring justice to this new world.
Dylan...ah where do I start with Dylan?? We really get to know him and his background in this story. If you read my review for Pulse then you know that this is exactly what I was hoping for. I wanted more Dylan and Faith and to know more about what has made them who they are today. Their love is just incredible. Patrick Carman writes their stories in such a way that I feel as though I am experiencing all these heartaches and emotions with them. I just love it.
There are also some new villains that are introduced in this story and boy are they villains. Of course Wade and Clara are still evil and UGH they make me so mad. I am hoping that one day they get exactly what is coming to them...(that is all i will say about that)
Of course, Hawk is back and he is one of my favorite characters. I love that he is so quirky and so intelligent. He plays an important character who is just fun loving and every reader will adore him.
There is so much action and intensity in this sequel and I found myself turning pages deep into the night. I just had to know what was going to happen next. Patrick Carman is such a talented writer and his characters are so rich and phenomenal. I cannot say enough how much I loved this book!!! I am already itching for the conclusion! I have to know what happens next...like NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review I really enjoyed this book. I liked that it didn't have an overload of action in it. I thought it was awesome how much characterization took place in the book. I would definitely read the next book in this series.
Plot Faith is forced to join a group of drifters in their fight against another group who is wanting to destroy the states. Faith trains all day with Dylan, her boyfriend, and gets stronger and wiser with each training session. Meridith, the leader of the drifters, has a plan to make Dylan go into enemy territory and find out their plans. When Dylan learns when the enemy is planning on attacking the states, Faith, and the rest of the drifters come in for the rescue. They fail. After the rescue mission went wrong Faith, Dylan and her friends hide away and wait to strike against the enemy once more.
Characterization Faith changed a lot in the book because in the beginning all she wanted in the world, was to kill Clara. Towards the end of the book she started to want revenge slightly less, but she did still want to kill her. Faith also changed because she could control her emotions better towards the end of the book, which made her seem like a more mature person, instead of an immature teenager.
Recommendations I would recommend this book to girls and boys who are thirteen years old through eighteen years old. The book has no foul language which makes it an appropriate book for some middle schoolers. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who hates all things romantic because the book does have some romantic parts in it.
Faith Daniels and Dylan Gilmore are part of the drifters. She is always mad and enraged and takes it upon the people with the first pulse. When Clara and Wade are found with their father, Andre and their mother, Gretchen, and a group of first pulse at a maximum security prison, ( abandoned, of course)Faith, Dylan, Hawk, and Clooger goes to stop what they are doing. Dylan goes to meet his Andre, his dad and help as an inside man, while everyone else waits outside and strike when the time comes. Faith has goes, and that is to kill Clara, the girl who killed her best friend. Tremor was better then Pulse, because it was more exciting and had more action behind it. It was a little sketchy in the end, and the way the book was ended was a awkward and didn't quite fit. Killing off everyone, like Meredith and Glory came as a little shock to me. It gave me the impression that the book was ending at Tremor and that didn't mingle well with the ending. I was surprised that when Wade met her he didn't just attempt to kill her. Otherwise it was a good book. I recommend this book to people who enjoy futuristic, fantasy, and adventure books. I recommend this book to both boys ad girls.
"He comes only to kill, this man without a heart. Now you must run."
I remember very little about book 1, only that I didn't like it. So color me surprised when I actually enjoyed book 2.
Dylan and Faith, Clara and Wade, Meredith and Gretchen. There is a race here as things start to gear up. A lot of secrets are finally revealed and the story definitely is pushed towards what will be it's conclusion in book 3. I definitely plan to read it.
Faith Daniels and Dylan Gilmore are a part of a group called the drifters in the year 2051. Faith is short tempered and takes her anger out on people who have the “first pulse.” People with second pulses in this book are known to have superhuman abilities and are able to use telekinesis to move objects. Faith Daniels changed a lot in the book because in the beginning all she really wanted was to kill her enemy Clara. Towards the end of this book Faith slowly started to want revenge less, but still wanted to kill Clara. You can notice how she’d change at the end of the book because she could control her emotions better, instead of being an immature teenager. Dylan Gilmore plays a big part in the story because he eventually is able to track down their enemies and find out their plans. When Dylan alerts the others of the attack coming from the enemies, Faith and the drifters come into the rescue. This book has no foul language and is appropriate so it can be enjoyed by anyone who reads this book. There is a bit of romance in this book if people like to read about romance. The book has a lot of suspense and gets you on the edge of your seat as you wait to see what’s going to happen next. I recommend this book for people who enjoy reading futuristic and adventure books. Overall it is a fun and enjoyable book to read and I’d give it a 10/10.
Personal Response: I liked this book because it is kind of intense. It is intense because it starts off with Faith finally waking up from a two-week nap and getting into a fight with a girl who killed her best friend.
Plot: In the book Tremor it started off with Faith finally waking up from a 2-week nap because she was unconscious. Faith, Dylan, and a few others went to find the Quinns. But Dylan went earlier than he was supposed to. Faith knew when he was going, so she followed him out at a safe distance. An hour later, Dylan willingly went to the quinns and Dylan found Andre. Andre started walking to the cell because he knew that he could not fight him by himself. Dylan said, “The cell is for me not for you.” Andre was shaken. Wade was a second pulse and he could feel whenever there was a pulse and he felt one. Wade and Clara went to go search the perimeter and then Clara scared Wade. He got really mad and said, “Why are you out here?” She went back to the base.
Recommendation: I recommend this book because I think it is really interesting and people can probably get addicted to this series. Both male and females can read this book and enjoy the action. I recommend this book to ages 12 years and up because of the mature language.
Not going to lie i read this so fast cause it was so fast paced. I loved everything about this sequel and the cliffhanger was a plot twist I wasn't expecting. One of the best sequels I've read recently ✨️🙂
Tremor is the second book in a series. I enjoyed the first book but was greatly disappointed in the second. The series went from exciting and unique to what felt like a template for popular teenage dystopian novels- the save the world mentality met by a weird love triangle and a highly predictable protagonist.
2.5 stars Tremor was not as good as Pulse was. I lacked the romance and excitement of the first book. It was still pretty fast paced, but the 3rd person omniscient POV was really starting to annoy me and I ended up skimming a lot. I really hated when it jumped into different peoples minds. I didn’t know who was thinking what. The story just jumped around way too much. I really don’t like knowing what everyone is doing or thinking in the story because it’s not engaging. I don’t want God’s POV. I want only one of two people’s POVs. Michael Grant is the only author who does a very good job jumping to different people’s POVs because he always uses chapter breaks to separate them. Carman used everyone point of view in the same paragraph with no separation.
I still loved the whole concept of a Pulse that lets people move things with their minds, as well as themselves. Telekinesis, levitation, flying, and even the 2nd pulse that makes some one invincible. The invincible thing reminded me of 13 Days till Midnight, a previous YA book by Patrick Carman. The second Pulse is like a shield of indestructibleness, but has a weakness.
The world building I still consider dystopian, though it’s not survival or resistance to government. There’s 2 States in what is the US. These State are big cities that utilize space. Other cities have been zeroed. No more electricity or water. The States were made to save the planet from people. The book is only 47 years in the future, so it’s not too far off. There’s tablets that can alter in size.
I still like the character Hawk the best out of all the characters. He reminds Cody from Unremembered by Jessica Brody. Genus kid that is amazing at math and likes to invent things and hack things. Faith is okay, but really bent on revenge. I like Dylan, mostly because in the first book he was really great. Swoon-worthy, even.
The book had action/thriller elements, but it was sci-fi overall. We find out something major at the end that could make book three really interesting. I recommend this series if you like Unremembered by Jessica Brody, Blackout by Robison Wells, Gone by Michael Grant, Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. If you enjoy the show Tomorrow People, or the X-Men movies.
Cover Art Review: I like the prison tower rising up in the air. It’s a cool image. I wish the cover was embossed.
I enjoyed this book. At this point it seems this is a two book series, and I hope that does not change. The ending of this book was great, and so I would like it to remain the last in this series. I definitely liked the first book better, but the ending of this book makes up for some of its shortcomings.
I normally love multiple perspectives in a book, when done well. But I felt like the transitions were sometimes awkward and confusing. Perhaps having an empty line between sections told from different perspectives would have made the transitions a little easier to follow.
I LOVED how various characters had different secrets that they were keeping from each other (and the reader) until the time was right for them to be revealed. The hints alluding to these various secrets are probably the reason that I got through this book so quickly.
Faith was a little frustrating sometimes, mainly when she was trying to go rogue. I understand her frustration with essentially being a instrument to serve some larger purpose in a fight that is not her own to accomplish something that has not even been revealed to her. I felt for the teenagers on both sides, to be honest. They were essentially the ones with ALL the power, but they were calling NONE of the shots. However, Faith, Wade, and Clara all spent so much time bitching about their goals/purpose/abilities that it became REAL tiresome. You're either with a cause or against it. There really is no point in constantly disparaging the people making the plans and moving the pieces on the board when you have consented to be a piece on the board.
That said, the adults were also frustrating at times for the same reason. They were relying on these kids to do EVERYTHING while consistently keeping things from them, and sometimes even downright lying to them. It made for a sort of weird dynamic.
Overall, I would recommend this series. The books go by quickly and are worth a read. I feel like the plot overall was a little ambitious for just two books. But I did like the world building. I am happy with the ending, but there were many loose ends. So, if you like your book endings to be wrapped up in a bow with all the problems solved, these books probably aren't for you.
Personal Response: Just like the last book, this book was filled with excitement and adventure. I really enjoyed this book because it was very suspenseful throughout the whole book. Also, this book was just as good if not better than the first book. This literary piece was intriguing and makes you wonder about what could really happen to the United States in the future or even the rest of the world. Plot Summary: Faith is now living by with the drifters, or rebels, and Dylan is training her how to use her second pulse. She also seems very unpredictable because of all the pent up anger about her parents and best friend being murdered by the twins, Wade and Clara. Hawk and Clooger do some spying on the twins, Gretchen, and Andre. They are all staying in an abandoned prison and have an army of first pulses and then Wade, Gretchen, and Clara who are second pulses. Eventually Dylan goes to the prison under a plan formed by the drifters and is being monitored by Hawk, Faith, and Clooger--who are in the woods outside of the prison. After being in the prison for a while, the Quinn's plan goes into action and they are moving the prison. Faith and Clooger travel along with the prison, and they are all headed toward the States. Faith eventually kills Gretchen, but she gets hurt in the process. Dylan gets manipulated around, and his mother dies along with his father who is also the twins father but not biologically. The book ends with the twins and their real father, Hotspur Chance, are after Dylan and Faith. Faith, Dylan, Hawk, and Clooger all go into hiding for a while. Recommendation: I would recommend this book to those who have read the first book. Also either gender could really read this, but there is a slight bit of romance in it, so that might be a turnoff for the male species. I think that this book would be good for all teenagers because there is some mild swearing, and romantic content. I gave this a five out of five because this is an extremely good book just like the rest of the series.
Wow what a follow up. This book doesn't disappoint, we pick up where we left off. I was so excited about this book and ahhh so in love.
Dylan is a beast in this book. He becomes so much more amazing. He is willing to do whatever it takes to protect he states. He gets a bomb dropped on him that will surprise us all. A twist in the plan but no fear he has Faith to keep him grounded. He is going into enemy territory, and he is going to take them all down. It's so hard to not fidget, to not break down and just take out the twins. They are horrible as is their mother. As the plan becomes more and more clear he is more than convinced he can't let this happen but his weakness is keeping him weak. He will triumph and it will be amazing.
Faith is just as amazing if not more in this book. She is focused, angry and wanting to take down Clara. That's her focus, which is great to a point. She is sick of waiting around taking Meredith's orders/half truths. When Dylan goes undercover she is following, she will stick to orders because she won't risk him. What is she willing to do for him? Anything is the answer. They become so much more in this book. The twists and turns you can't keep up with.
Everything happens in this book so fast, the revelations will make you gasp, the love will make you swoon, and the ending will just push you over the edge wanting the next book immediately. Ah this book had so much going on, and it was all amazing every single page. I can't wait to see what happens next!
O Tremor…I got some things to say to you… and most of those things are good!
Firstly, beautifully written. Completely comparable to the first book in the series, you won’t be disappointed if you enjoyed Pulse then read Tremor. The storyline is taking some of the same interesting turns the first book took, its certainly not slow.
Secondly, and I have to mention this, Faith and Dylan. I love Dylan so much; he is a relatable character with this aura of reliability? Not sure if that’s the word for it, but I like him. Faith on the other hand, I was really annoyed with, especially in Tremor. It was all revenge that, anger this, blah blah blah I’m-not-going-to-acknowledge-the-rules-cause-I’m-a-second-pulse. She was on the edge of total snobbishness and that’s not something I value in my heroines. I also don’t figure that finding out she has a kryptonite is going to knock that girl off her high horse anytime soon.
Thirdly: Hawk, Clooger, and Meredith. I enjoy Hawk so much; he is easily one of my favorite characters. I’m worried about him being an Intel, I want to know more about this. Clooger was just funny; him and Hawk together are amazing. Meredith, I was really surprised to find that hands down I loved her ‘one on one’ sessions in this book the best. The ‘flashbacks’ to her time with Hotspur Chance and Andre were very enlightening and brought a depth to the storyline I really enjoyed.
Those were the words I had to say and now I’m a leaving on a Jet Plane…that is until book three comes out!
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher.
I am so thrilled with this series so far. This second book in the Pulse series was filled with action from start to finish. We are still in the dark about some things, but so are the main characters. However, this novel is beautifully written and can only be described as original perfection.
The only issue I had (and this is probably just my girlie side talking) was Faith. She was so driven by hate and anger in this book that I feel we lost who she truly was as a person. She disappointed me in this book, but the other characters were just perfect, especially Dylan and Hawk. I hope the Faith I loved in book one returns in the next book.
Please write quickly Patrick Carman!! I need the rest of the story!!
won on goodreads Tremor by Patrick Carman Second in his seires in the year 2051 I did not know what to expect because I remember a movie call Tremors but this book is not the movie and it is a great story of people trying to survive after most of the world has been destroyed an a scientist does DNA trying to get stronger people call Pulse first have telekinetic powers and second Pulse are virtually indestructible and only 5 exist . So a war between pulses and a crazy scients that is evil causes sever problems and some many loved one lost it was sad but I hope for another freat book to come from this one and do wish to read it. Yes that good an adventure and future world outlook
This book was better than the first! Everything about it was better! There was definitely more action and the characters were hilarious!! This is the sequel to Pulse. Pulse is set in the future were earth has just been mostly destroyed. Though of course there is all this technology and stuff! But anyway one of our main characters Dylan has a telekinetic power, called a pulse. A lot of people on this world have the first pulse but not a lot of people have the second. Dylan is one of them! As well as our other main character Faith. Pulse was good, but it did not blow me away. However Tremor was really good, and I cannot wait for the third book!!
I loved it! I'm so super excited to read the next one...a year from now :) I like that Faith is such a loose cannon, because so often you see girls develop these super powers and then they're at least MOSTLY in line with whatever is happening around them. Faith...not so much. She's got her own mission and own agenda and anything that stands in her way is just silly. Even if it's not the healthiest attitude and she'll need to learn to play well with others, I just love it! :) And Clara is freaking scary and such a good adversary. Just as single-minded as Faith, but with a wicked-smart brain and the patience to put a good, solid plan in place. Can't wait to see what happens next!!
This second entry into the Pulse series picks up a couple of months after the first one left off and continues to be action-packed until the final showdown. There are so many mysteries left, though! I really liked the way that the author forshadowed and gave you the inside look into everyone's feelings and motivations to set the tension for the rest of the chapter. I was a little confused regarding continuity in a couple of places with people seeming to know things that they shouldn't, but maybe it was because of all of the secrets and betrayals not yet revealed. All together a good fast read. I'll be eagerly anticipating the final sequel!
I would recommend this book to a 5th grader because it seems just enough of a challenge for them. This book is about two kids named Faith and Dylan who have a special power called the pulse. The pulse can allow you to move things with your mind. But they are special pulses there are 1st pulse and 2nd pulse the 2nd pulses are virtualy indestructible. There are other people that have 2nd pulses two but not many the other 2nd pulses work for a man named Hotspur Chance. Hotspur Chance is trying to reduce the population in the world because the world is over populated but he wants to do that by killing the people. So Faith and Dylan are trying to kill and stop Hotspur Chance.
It was a very interesting book that opened up in a clever way but, the middle was a little distasteful and boring and lacked much action. The ending was very good wanting me to read another.
The book pulse tells about a girl named Faith who learns that she has the ability to move things with her mind - telekinesis. The Quinn family (Wade, Clara, Andre, and Gretchen) end up being the main villains, and Faith is trained by Dylan and his mom, Meredith, to control her powers and maximize them for their fight with the Quinns. After reading Tremor, it revealed some very interesting twists. One of these is that Andre Quinn is Dylan's biological father. Dylan and his team end up using this piece of information as their main plan to defeat the Quinns. However, their plan seems to backfire when the world's most intelligent man, Hotspur Chance, is released from a prison. This is a very simplified summary of the book.
I really enjoyed reading this book. There were some very interesting plot twists that caught my attention, and the writing was very good. I think the best thing about this book (and Pulse) is that it's very unpredictable. I tend to like books that are hard to predict or that have lots of plot twists, because it keeps me interested and curious about what will happen next. This book definitely falls under that category. I think the main idea for the book - telekinesis - is great, too, and there's a lot of moments that put you at the edge of your seat. Also, the book has a great length. It's not too short, yet it's not too long. If I recall correctly, it's around 300 to 350 pages.
There's some really interesting elements to this book, as well. I'll explain one of them. Hotspur Chance, the smartest man in the book, turned humans into human calculators by allowing them to use more of their brains' potential. This increased their IQ substantially and he was able to control them using his mind. These people were named "Intels." The interesting part about this is that at some point, all Intels eventually hear extremely intriguing questions in their minds, leading them to go insane just thinking about it. These questions are asked by Hotspur Chance.
Overall, this was a great book. I really enjoyed reading it. I'm definitely excited to read the next book in the series, Quake.
