The Mighty Quinns: Dex

Just the right touch…

With her career on the line, Marlie Jenner is determined to make a top-notch documentary about beloved Irish author Aileen Quinn. Which means she needs a top-notch filmmaker; she needs Dex Kennedy. Dex is talented, well respected and Irish. He's also hotter than hell. And when they meet, he looks as if he wants to eat Marlie right up.

Marlie does look delicious, but after a fatal accident during the shooting of his last documentary, Dex refuses to work on another film. Marlie has some very persuasive techniques, however, and after one seductive, drugging kiss, Dex is hooked—on the film, on Marlie, on the prospect of living again. But every documentary takes on a life of its own. And this one promises an ending that none of them could ever have anticipated….

Kate began reading romance in 1979 when she picked up a copy of Kathleen Woodiwiss's Ashes in the Wind. She read the book from cover to cover in one very long night and was immediately hooked on the genre.

The next morning, she was standing at the door to her local Waldenbooks and when they opened, she hurried inside and asked for everything else written by Woodiwiss. At the same time, she found wonderful books by Rosemary Rogers, Laurie McBain, and Jennifer Blake.

Nearly 10 years later, while working as an advertising copywriter, Kate decided to try writing a romance of her own. After a history of interesting jobs in teaching, retailing, advertising, and nonprofit work, she was determined to add romance author to that list.

After numerous failed attempts over three years, Kate decided to forget writing historical romance and turned to category romance. Six months later, her first story, A Vagabond Heart, was finished. A year later, Harlequin bought the book after Kate won the national 1992 Harlequin Temptation contest. The book was published in 1993 as Indecent Exposure.

Her dream of adding romance writer to her resume came true and in December of 1993 she turned off her alarm clock, shredded her pantyhose, and became a full-time writer.

Since then, Kate has written numerous books for Temptation, Weddings by DeWilde, Harlequin anthologies, Love and Laughter, and Duets. Her new Duet, Three Babies and a Bargain (July 2000) will be her 24th project for Harlequin and All Through the Night (August 2000), a Temptation Blaze, will mark her 25th.

Kate lives in southeastern Wisconsin in a cozy little house in a picturesque village. Two cats also live with her—Tansing, a grumpy Himalayan, and Tibriz, a tortie Persian mix that she rescued from an animal shelter. She enjoys gardening, golf, reading, and romantic movies.

Very good book and conclusion to this set of the Mighty Quinns series. I really liked both Marlie and Dex. Marlie has always been different than the rest of her family, a bunch of overachieving doctors. She is the artistic one and is constantly being put down by them. Marlie is determined to make her mark as a producer and this documentary about Aileen Quinn is her way to do it. She knows exactly how she wants to do it, but she needs Dex Kennedy's talents to do it. The problem is that he has stopped working on anything and won't take her phone calls. So she tracks him down to make her pitch in person. She wasn't expecting him to be so hot and finds herself incredibly attracted to him. She doesn't want to mix business and pleasure so she tries to resist her feelings, but with Dex feeling the same way they end up together anyway. As they work closely together on the film Marlie gets to know Dex and finds that she wants more than an affair that only lasts as long as the filming. I loved Marlie's determination to make the documentary she envisions and the way she does everything she can to find Dex and convince him. I loved the way that she stormed away but then came back to wait for him at his cottage. She wouldn't give up until she had convinced him that he had to help her. I loved seeing her explain her vision to him and get him as enthusiastic as she was. I also liked the way she stood up for her ideas but also was able to accept his guidance once she realized that he was right. Marlie was also able to see the guilt he was feeling about the death of his friend and filming partner and help him overcome those feelings. The biggest problem she had was a lack of confidence in her own appeal to Dex. She didn't think he'd want to continue to see her after they were done filming so she didn't tell him about her feelings for him. I really liked the way that working with Dex and learning so much from him gave her the professional confidence she needed, and that professional confidence spilled over to her personal life. I loved seeing her stand up to her mother at their lunch and then go after Dex.

Dex has been existing in a depressed state of mind for eight months, ever since the death of his friend while they were filming in Colombia. He feels that Matt's death was his fault since he didn't stop him from going back for that one last shot. Dex has refused to take any calls asking him to do any more films. He's not sure what he's going to do but he can't face filming without his friend. When Marlie tracks him down at his grandmother's cottage he doesn't want anything to do with her film, but he is attracted to her. The strength of his attraction is something he's never felt before. That attraction and need to be with Marlie has him saying yes to helping her. Pretty soon he's as enthusiastic about the subject as she is. I loved the way that he used his experience to make it even better, at the same time teaching Marlie what she needs to know to become a better producer. He also found that being with Marlie brought a relief from the depression he had been suffering from. The longer he was with her the more he thought about continuing beyond the end of the filming. He was stunned to discover that he had fallen in love with her, but was afraid to say anything to her fearing rejection. Dex also discovered, as they researched more of Aileen's story, that his connection to her was much closer than just a professional one. It also caused him to put extra distance between him and Marlie until the film was done. He was so miserable when she had to go back to Boston to report to her bosses that he almost seemed to be slipping back to his old ways. I loved the ending and seeing how they got together.

Honestly it was a bit disappointing. I don't normally read smaller romance novels, so maybe I'm not used to the format, but it was awfully short and didn't have much of a conclusion. It felt very much like a Hallmark Christmas movie (probably because the book takes place around Christmas, but still).

For the majority of the time I was irritated because Marnie wasn't DOING ANY WORK. Their timeline was incredibly short and yet it seemed like all she was doing was gallivanting off in Ireland with Dex. I mean, I know it's a romance novel, but still. The other parts of the story would've been interesting if they'd be in there at all. We kept hearing teasers about Aileen's super interesting story and tragic past, but then never found out what happens (maybe it's referencing other books in the series? Admittedly I haven't read any of them).

But then there's the actual romance. It is a pretty sweet romance, and Marnie's and Dex's relationship is pretty cute. The progression is very unbelievable and kind of irritating, but it's still sweet. This is gonna sound like a weird critique, but I have to say it: the sex isn't very good or interesting. It's just not written well. "And then they spent a half hour teasing each other." Did they? Well...that's nice, then? I guess?

There's also a fair number of typos and at one point a character is called the wrong name... It's not like I was expecting a lot, but I was still disappointed. Guess I'll stick to my huge fantasy/scifi romances from now on.

this book wasnt all that, it simply wasnt my cup of tea, i felt like there wasnt really much time for them to fall in love almost as if it was instant which is something that shouldnt happen because real love isnt rushed and because im not a fan of the whole fall in love at first sight , i liked the way dex describes marlie in the book but still i dnfed the book halfway because i simply couldnt take it, it was boring in the least but yet at the same time i enjoyed it????? its questionable because dex has a personality of a goldfish and marlie just"isnt like the other girls" which is very annoying we get it you're "different" ,honestly this book is annoying goodbye.

More like a 3.5, but can't do half stars. This is my first book by this author, and I'm impressed enough to give her another try. This story is the 26th in a series about the Quinn grandkids (heirs) who are apparently very prolific, as there are about 30 books altogether, each featuring a different character from the family. So it really isn't spoiling anything to reveal that Dex, who at the beginning of the story has no idea he is a Quinn, finds out part way through that he is. Dex is a documentary film-maker who reluctantly agrees to film Marlie Jenner's idea about a documentary featuring her favorite writer, Aileen Quinn. He mostly agrees because he and Marlie have chemistry. They make some half-hearted attempts to keep their relationship professional, but that doesn't last.

Marlie was okay, lacking self-confidence at first and relying so much on Dex to steer her straight in the documentary world. Dex was pretty great actually, but I always like Heroes better than heroines. I just got a bit frustrated with the two of them there toward the end, once Dex finds out about his Quinn-ness. He decides he can't be a part of the film, steps back and basically enforces a separation (out of professional duty or something). I didn't really buy it and the angst felt silly, since either one of them at any point could have stepped forward and said, nah, let's just be together since we love each other. The secondary romance, between Claire and Ian was one I actually would have liked to go into more depth with. I have a thing for sexy nerds (Ian). This was a pretty sexy book and a very easy read. I might go in search of another Quinn book.

I can't believe this is the first Kate Hoffmann book I've read! It will certainly not be my last. I am going to seek out her back catalog and read them all! I found this book, though part of a series, a wonderful stand alone read. Ms. Hoffmann has created a world I truly enjoyed visiting, the setting was enchanting and beautifully detailed. Her characters were endearing as well; multi dimensional and quirky. I became easily immersed and I have to say totally enjoyed my Mighty Quinn experience; evenly paced, well plotted, satisfying read.
*I received my copy from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
