Annelise Ryan is a pseudonym for Beth Amos, the USA Today bestselling author of 30 novels, including the Monster Hunter Mysteries featuring cryptozoologist and bookstore owner, Morgan Carter, the Mattie Winston mystery series, featuring a wryly cynical nurse-turned-coroner, and the Helping Hands Mysteries featuring social worker Hildy Schneider.

In addition, she is the author of the Mack's Bar Mystery series written as Allyson K. Abbott and five standalone paranormal thrillers written as Beth Amos.

She is a retired emergency room nurse living in Wisconsin. There are several reasons why she decided to use pseudonyms, not the least of which was that her ER patients might not have been comfortable knowing she spent her spare time thinking up clever ways to kill people.

After the debacle of the last book, I am pleased that things seem to be going in the directions that I like better. Mattie has challenges to deal with and they are heavy, life changing issues, but they are fair. The things that everyone deals with—family problems, communication faux pas, not being able to say no, the past impinging on the present.

After four books of uncertainty, it seems that Steve Hurley really cares about Mattie, but his ex-wife and the daughter he never knew about show up at a critical juncture. Mattie has been thinking about returning to work at the hospital to enable an above board relationship but circumstances intervene. It's messy and they are a bit reckless. You know, honesty is difficult. We want what we want and we aren't too good to lie a bit to ourselves and others in order to get it.

This series is addictive for me. I've got an enormous stack of library books, not to mention the unread novels in my personal collection, but all I want to do is grab the next book.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The last book in this series was definitely not a fave but this time Mattie Winston is back in the coroner’s office and investigating a case at a local nursing home. The owner of the place died an unusual death and the place is full of suspects. Unfortunately, the man found with the body is dealing with dementia and can’t remember what happened.

As a condition of Mattie’s return to the job she has to meet with a shrink and she is not happy about that. She is also dealing with the demise of her relationship with Detective Hurley or is she? With them working together again are they going to be able to keep their hands off each other?

______

Okay, the author has got her groove back and it is stories like this I have have come to expect from her! Laugh out loud! Fun! Fun! Fun!

The mystery is well-plotted and full of twists. A plethora of suspects! A nursing home is a terrific setting because residents and staff all may have means, motive, and opportunity for wanting the guy in charge 6 feet under especially if the rumors floating around the place are true. The investigation was heady but handled correctly even with all the roadblocks the powers that be tried to throw up.

The characters in this series are great and the introduction of a special person in Hurley’s life adds a who adds a new element to his life and the series. Plus there is a cliffhanger that just blew me away.

I can’t wait to get started on the next book in this series as I continue my endeavor to catch up on the entire series. I love that it is set in my home state of Wisconsin and upset that it took me so long to find it.

This one was truly A Perfect Escape!

Love this series!

Another great entry in the series. I love Mattie, she is so real and relatable. The mystery was good and all the “side mysteries “ kept me guessing, some of which I was right about too! Can’t wait to see what happens next!

Board Stiff by Annelise Ryan is the 5th book in the Mattie Winston Mystery series. After her break-up with detective Steve Hurley when his wife and daughter turned up on his doorstep, Mattie Winston returns to her old job as investigator with the coroners office. She is called to the death of Bernie Chase, owner of the Twilight Home and believed by many of the residents to be killing them off when their care became more expensive and costly. A fun book with Mattie juggling the investigation with rekindling her romance with detective Steve Hurley. I love that she is smart and willing to help others despite her own problems. An enjoyable, engrossing mystery.

Mattie's Life Changes Again.

In the 5th book of this series again grows and her life changes directions. The murder occurs in an Assisted Living Home. Rumors explode easily and one going around the the murder victim was killing off patients. Emily is staying the night at Mattie' s cottage and see a "Peeking Tom". The result Mattie and Steve rush to her aid. Steve tells Mattie his frustration with being a Father he never expected to be one. Mattie doesn't tell Steve she is carrying her child. Mattie needs to find answers to these questions while running the investigation at the nursing home. I highly recommend this series.

I am really liking this series...but this one...I wasn't bored stiff, but I was pretty bored. The book is written in the first person. As if that wasn't enough, there are added sections (sometimes a full chapter) of this person's diary entries...what, a first person view of the first person telling the story? And the diary entries use a small cursive font that seems to be lighter than the main font, which makes it difficult to read. And, give me a break...sex at a crime scene (participants are the policeman in charge and the almost-pathologist).

Deputy coroner Mattie Winston is back on the job after resigning in the previous book. She is called to the nursing home by an acquaintance, to find the owner of the residence, Bernie Chase, dead on the bathroom floor. He is covered in a powder used to turn liquids to solids, a horrible way to die. The home's residents are certain that Bernie is killing the patients who cost him too much. . .and the patient that found him can't remember a thing. Who killed Bernie? Why was he murdered? While trying to help solve the crime she is also dealing with her feelings for police detective Steve Hurley. Just after spending the night together, his wife (he thought they were divorced) shows up at his door with his teenaged daughter that he knew nothing about. She leaves their daughter Emily with Hurley and takes off to find her brother who is in trouble. It doesn't take long for Mattie and Emily to become friends.

I really love Mattie's character. She is a strong, independent, unapologetic, larger woman who is also smart and has great sleuthing skills. People like her and tell her things they might not tell others. She is dealing with her feelings for police detective Steve Hurley. The mystery is well-plotted and full of twists. There were so many suspects! A nursing home is a terrific setting because residents and staff may all have means, motive, and opportunity for wanting the guy in charge dead, especially if the rumors are true. With Steve and Mattie working hard to solve this one, the lawyers throw up roadblocks left and right. This was where Annelise Ryan added some humour to the story. I love the characters in this series, they are all well developed and wonderful. The working and personal relationships are realistic and relatable. Adding Emily to the story shows us another side to Hurley, and there is a huge cliffhanger at the end. Luckily the next book is already published, so I won't be waiting long until I read the next story. I really enjoyed this book and love that Mattie is back in the job she loves.

Exciting Story

I enjoy this series quite a bit. The characters are strong and down to earth. I love Mattie, she is such a fun character and most readers will be able to relate to her.
This story involves the death of a nursing home owner. It seems the residents are suspicious of him and are fast to feed the rumor mill. It's up to Mattie to ask the right questions and working with Hurley again is not as easy as she hoped.

I really liked this book in this series. Mystery was really good, even though I figured it out. The ending was another ‘oh wow’ moment, even though I figured that out early on too. Actually, now that I’m thinking about it, there was another short storyline mixed in there that I figured out too.

Mattie still needs to get a backbone- finding that part of her very frustrating. And the narrator keeps mispronouncing the medical words. (I yell out loud at this)

Mayhem, Murder, Romance & Reunions are Captured in Sorenson”

Mattie Winston is in a muddle. Since she lost her job as Deputy Coroner two months ago, she has been re-hired and is seeing Psychiatrist Maggie Baldwin on the insistence of her friend, landlord and once-again boss, Izzy, who has been extremely worried about her. Mattie has been through quite a bit of emotional trauma, with the discovery of her now-ex-husband David’s philandering plus lots of financial problems to solve-and then there’s Hurley. That’s hunky Detective Steve Hurley to be exact—who makes Mattie’s heart sing and her mind turn to mush. Izzy has a non-fraternization rule and asks her to choose between her job and her romance. Mattie, before Izzy re-hired her, thought she was being hired as an ER Nurse, so she chose, you guessed it, R-O-M-A-N-C-E, with someone near but, oh so not dear, squashing the opportunity. If nothing else, Mattie is resilient—until Hurley’s supposed-to-be ex shows up with his teenage daughter! Mattie takes refuge at a nearby casino, drowning her sorrows in chips and faded memories. She avoids contact with Hurley, even as she’s commandeered at the grocery store parking lot by frantic local Mortician, Irene Keller, who is afraid her beloved, but quite befuddled due to dementia, Husband Bjorn has killed someone at the Twilight Nursing Home where he resides. When the lifeless body of CEO and Nursing Home owner, Bernard Chase is discovered in the men’s room, all fingers point in poor Bjorn’s direction, especially with the more than possible murder weapon in sight! Did Bjorn really murder this unpopular soul? If poor, muddled Bjorn didn’t do the deed, than who did? The evening charge nurse/Bernie’s Girlfriend, Regan Simmons? His cold-as-ice Wife, Vonda? The Author has woven a wildly tangled web which encompasses mayhem, chuckles and more than a few surprises. If you have not become acquainted with Mattie and the gang, I strongly suggest that you do—lots of intrigue and laughs are always the order of the day. I can’t wait for the next volume—I’m betting you will agree.

The story was good, continued the series. My only complaint is the font/size used for the diary entries. I read the book (not the kindle) and the font used for the diary entries is extremely difficult to read AND the font was very small. Annoying, but didn't detract from the story.

I have no hissy fits to throw after reading this, which is a relief.

I wasn't a huge fan of the murder at the nursing facility, and I pegged the killer early on, but that was pure guessing on my part and it was still fun to see all the clues come together.

The best news is that Mattie sees a psychiatrist and starts to journal. All the self-examination puts a huge halt on that gambling lunacy. We're still wrapped up in the Hurley/Mattie will-they/won't they/can't these two just figure it out already drama, but at least it didn't make me twitch this book. And the newest potential wedge that could come between them was...removed.

So, we reached a more even keel story line in terms of character drama, which made it more enjoyable. In truth, it probably deserves another half star, but I'm still bitter about that last book.

I thought maybe it was going to be funny, but it was not. It was OK. I did learn about isolyser powder, very interesting. And I guess I was a little amused by the old folks who hang out in the yard smoking what they think is pot. Probably the same group who was doing that in high school.... If I ever have to go to an old age home I want to hang out with my friends smoking pot in the yard, heh heh.
The owner of this old age home is found dead in a bathroom with isolyser powder around his mouth. Enter Mattie, who works in the ME's office, and Hurley, who is a cop. Besides the murder mystery, Mattie and Hurley are a clandestine couple, and recently Hurley's wife (I thought she had divorced me, I swear!) and daughter (I have a daughter?!?!) have entered the picture.

Starts out cute, gets incredibly stupid quickly. Turns out they entire MC cast is repulsive and at best, naive, though the reality is incompetent at their jobs.

Soap opera of the lowest form. Ignoring the distasteful, uninspiring, idiot bits, it could be fun. Literally rescripted much of the background bs to make it less objectionable. Wonder (honestly) why the author didn't do that. Why write characters that so actively court negative outcomes? Why such not-credible melodrama, such lame plot boosters? This mess isn't reality, its not fantasy, its just soap-trope-supersaturation writing.

Though one can see a bunch of tipsy friends sitting around, challenging each other for how many stupid twists they can shove into one simple story...

This is far better than the fourth book. Which i just highly think everyone should just skip over that book. The author fixes the problems with fourth in the first fifty pages which I am fully okay with because I hated that book. The mystery story was good and I didn't guess who it was but I can see the signs . Mattie is a fun character. Now I will say in this book there is less of comedy tone and she doesnt get herself many funny and embarrassing situations. But she gets herself plenty of fun situation with Steve Hurley. I did wish to see more her in with Izzy. A lot of time is spent on just talking to people and slowly progress into the cases.

Also the diary entries were all in cursive in this one so if you can't read it, I suggest you read it online or listen to audiobooks.

This isn'ta hard hitting Mystery series but I love the characters in this series.

Mattie Winston, former Emergency Nurse, former Deputy Coroner, now divorced, is living off her divorce settlement. She loved being a coroner, but quit because she fell in love with a police Detective and it was a conflict of interests. Then his former wife appeared and informed him that he was not legally divorced, and besides, he had a 13 year old daughter that he did not know about, Mattie’s life went into a tailspin. Now she’s back at the coroner’s office and trying to help solve the murder of a nursing home owner. The home’s residents are not sorry that he died, and have differing stories as to what is going on at the home. The home’s Board of Directors are making it difficult for the police (and Mattie) to solve the crime. Mattie is an engaging funny but smart character.

I liked the murder mystery aspect but I wasn't expecting the amount of baby mama drama that happened. I knew Mattie was pregnant chapters before she did. Bernie's cause of death however was brilliantly foreshadowed without giving the game away. It worked because it relied on information about drug interactions which I hadn't put together. Hurley's reaction to becoming a single father struck me as rather immature. Yes, Kate should've talked to him instead of abandoning her daughter and sneaking off to go die but he was already Emily's father, and complaining about it doesn't help. It's no wonder Mattie plans to keep her pregnancy from Hurley rather than telling him immediately. Especially since he left to get Emily closure and possibly yell at Kate some more.

Hooray! Mattie is back on the job after a two month "hiatus". And once she is back, there is a lot going on over the next four days. But it's no surprise that Mattie is able to solve the mystery and get the murderer before the perp gets her! The victim is the President and part owner of the Twilight Home. The potential murderes are his wife, the husband of a nurse with whom he was having an affair, the patients at Twilight Home and all its employees. Meanwhile Hurley is dealing with his newfound daughter and her missing mother.....

I'm starting to wonder if the first book I read was an anomaly, because I've hardly laughed at these last two books.

I figured out what was going on with the Mattie storyline fairly early. The murder didn't really make sense to me.

The worst part were the diary entries. First, you're just telling us what happened, rather than showing us. Plus, the font was smaller and in cursive. WHO WRITES IN CURSIVE THESE DAYS? Plus, while cursive is pretty, it's like the least practical font out there.

I'm starting to think about discontinuing this series, especially with the upcoming storyline.

As the last book ended on a cliffhanger I was anxious to read this book and it lived up to my expectations. A death at the nursing home has Steve and Mattie working close together and the affection between them is humming in the background. The story line is fast paced and has twists and turns. There are a lot of side stories in this book that keeps the book very entertaining. This book again has a small cliffhanger so have the next one available.

A fun, laugh out loud series!! When the owner of a nursing home is found dead, Mattie gets involved in the investigation after returning to her job at the ME's office. Unfortunately, there are lots of suspects including the patients, staff, board members, the man's wife, and his mistress's husband. These books are always entertaining and I had a hard time putting this one down. Looking forward to seeing what's next for Mattie and her relationship with Hurley!

This was another good entry in this series. A little bit of time has gone by since the end of the previous book. Mattie has her job as an assistant medical examiner back, Hurley is adjusting to being a dad to a teenager, and someone dies.

This was not my favorite in the series, but it was okay. Looking forward to reading more in the series.

Still pretty decent

And I mean that in a good way, because I skipped book 4 and dove right of in to #5. The premise was interesting, the investigation at the nursing home was attention grabbing and humorous at times (especially Mattie’s chat with the resident dealer), and the two surprises towards the end were bangers.

Already have book six ready to go.
