Made me laugh, made me cry, made me fall in love!!

I just adore the Sweet, Texas series by Candis Terry! The stories are funny, sweet, romantic, and very sexy, and while they are light, Contemporary Romance reads, they’re not shallow. The stories are filled with life’s trials and triumphs, each poignant in its own unique way. And Sweetest Mistake even had me a bit teary eyed.

My thoughts…

Candis Terry really knows how to tell a story that draws me in and captures my heart, first page to the last. In Sweetest Mistake I found myself running a wide range of emotions – hurt, frustration, sorrow, anger – but the whole time I was filled with hope that these two amazing people would be able to look past the past, and stop letting the fear of “what if” ruin their future. It’s not that I didn’t understand where they were coming from, because I totally did. But sometimes you have to take a chance… just one more chance… because the payoff, as it was for Jackson and Abby, is worth the risk.

The bottom line…

If you’re a fan of small town romances with awesome heroes and heroines, an amazing supporting cast, lot’s of steam and beautiful happily ever afters, then you need to pay a visit to Sweet, Texas. You may just decide you never want to leave!

My thanks to Avon Books for providing me with a copy of Sweetest Mistake. I loved every minute I spent reading it!

Jackson Wilder has had a rough couple years, but the firefighter and former Marine is making his own way. When his former best friend returns to Sweet all the emotions he pushed away are suddenly brought to the surface and he’s determined to confront her about the past.

Abby Morgan has returned to Sweet after her sham of a marriage falls apart and she’s tossed aside. She’s readying her parents’ home for sale. She was hoping to be in and out of Sweet before even being noticed, but that’s not the case when Jackson shows up on her doorstep. Just seeing him reawakens all the feelings she has buried away.

The last time they saw each other, Jackson was heading off to war after an amazing night spent in each other’s arms. But Abby was his best friend and the only person he can confide in and despite sharing all his firsts with her he’s not willing to risk that for the possibility of a relationship.

His lack of any kind of promise drove Abby away and into the arms of her now ex-husband Mark Rich. But being back in Sweet renews all the old feelings she had for Jackson and while he may deny that they may have feelings that are more than friend related she is determined to get him to see her as more.

First let’s talk about Jackson. *fans self* Best. Dad. Ever. We get to see him as a father… letting his 3 year old putting makeup on him and doing his hair … singing along to Disney movies and entertaining his daughter. But he struggles with his demons… the death of his brother and the guilt he carries because of it. He struggles with the idea that he scares his daughter because of those demons. And he struggles with the idea that he and Abby can’t have anything more than friendship. Oh… and he says stupid things. LOL But holy crap does he make up for it in sexiness and swoon.

I really liked Abby too. She was relatable and strong and determined to have Jackson see her for who she could be to him instead of being stuck in the friendzone. But his stubbornness is definitely going to be a problem.

As in the first book in the Sweet, Texas series, Terry has given us a wonderful small town feel with memorable characters and stories. The Wilder boys are larger than life and Jana Wilder, their mother remains one of my favorites.

You can definitely see the setup for the hopefully upcoming books which I assume will give us more on the remaining Wilder boys, Jesse and Jake. While the plot of the story itself isn’t completely different, Terry writes with a fresh voice and gives us interesting characters and stories that I can be invested and interested in.

If you’re looking for a light-hearted romance with some sexy guys you definitely need to add the Sweet, Texas series to your to read list.

Coffee Dates with Sweetest Mistakes

First date: Firefighter and single Dad Jackson Wilder is taken by surprise to learn that his best friend, the girl he shared his first everything with is back in town after she up and left without a word five years ago. Abigail Morgan is home to close out her parents’ home and prepare it for sale. It is giving her a little time to reflect and put herself back together after a failed and dysfunctional marriage. Ooo right away Terry has me invested in these characters. Jackson is an all-around good guy, who has suffered loss, has nightmares from his time overseas and is trying to raise his daughter with his ex-wife. Abigail is sweet, damaged and has been in love with Jackson forever; I am so curious about her story. The chemistry is immediate, and I am already rooting for these two and looking for some chocolate.

Second date: Awe, and why? These two have issues, but beneath it all, it is so dang oblivious these two love each other. As they renew their friendship, I find myself laughing, sighing and wanting to slap Jackson upside his sexy head. I loved the sexual tension, miscommunication and fear these two have. Family and members of this wonderful small-town all offer opinions, and meddle making me smile and giggle. Can I just say Jackson’s daughter is the cutest princess ever! We get to learn more about another brother, and I cannot wait for his story. I love this small-town and hope we get many of their stories.

Third date: Abigail is going to have to hit Jackson over the head, send out smoke signals and lock that boy in her bedroom and kiss him senseless. Wouldn’t that be fun? I am flipping the pages, lost in this book. We have twists, turns, tears and danger. I am nibbling on chocolate and totally lost in Texas! Do not even think of interrupting me until these two sort things out!

Yes...you can be super jealous that I got a piece of Jackson and you have to wait for him to show up in your stocking at Christmas.

OMG...I didn't think the Wilder Brother's could get even HOTTER or MORE STUBBORN than Reno, but I was WRONG! Jackson is a whole lotta yummy in a tall, handsome package that I wanted to unwrap...no dirty minds, I meant unwrap his MIND!! He sure was a stubborn man that had me wanting to give him a good, stern talking to...but Abby, one of the coolest heroines (along with Charli) had his number and she knew how to work him....There are some HYSTERICAL Scenes!

Just wait until Jesse joins the fun and tries to stir the pot.

I have so, so much more to say about THE SWEETEST MISTAKE, but for now I will say I laughed, I cried, I FELL IN LOVE. Candis Terry knows Romance and she does it with Style and Heart!!

Well, Jackson is a huge improvement over Reno, which is odd because the behavior is pretty much the same. I think it worked better with Jackson because you could clearly see that he had two different modes based on whether something was physically or emotionally threatening. Physical threats were met head-on and with determination and bravery. Emotional threats were met with burrowing into himself while he tried to figure out what to do. And no, I didn't find it at all weird for a man to be brave with physical danger and cautious with emotional problems. And even though it carried on at least one time too many for my comfort, I at least got the feeling that he was on the way to overcoming his worst instincts, at least where Abby was concerned.

I do wish that I liked Abby better, though. I just found her kind of squishy. Jackson needed someone who could stand up to him better—or someone with enough emotional fortitude to smack him upside the head in her own right (instead of waiting for him to come to his senses). Abby wasn't that girl. Sadly. Oh, she got there in the end, at the horns of necessity, but it would have been so much better if she had had the guts/fortitude/cajones to lay things out more firmly a time or two.

So yeah, still three stars, but a much more hopeful three stars than the first. I do hope that one of these Sweet men will have some emotional courage. It really doesn't say much for Jana Wilder's nurturing if her boys are all emotional cowards...

A note about Steamy: A moderate steam showing. Two relatively lengthy explicit scenes, though not much on the playful side in the rest of the story, so on the low side of moderate when all's told.

Another great outing in the series, with another hero who needed to get his head together. Our hero is a fire-fighter and single dad of an adorable three-year-old. Our heroine is his former best friend who walked out of his life seven years ago because he always treated her as an after-thought and never realised she was in love with him and their shared moments of intimacy (twice), which he wrote off meant the world to her. So, the heroine went looking for love in all the wrong places and found herself married to a cold, rich, image-obsessed man. Now, her marriage is over and she is back just to fix-up and sell her self-centred parents home and she runs into the hero. In the beginning I wasn't sure about the heroine but as her layers are revealed you really start to like her and want to hit the hero's head. Our hero knows that he loves the heroine but doesn't want to do a thing for it. I also really liked that he and his ex share such a cordial relationship; an oops pregnancy lead them to marry but both of them realised you can't force love and it is better to co-parent. I loved seeing Abby rebuild herself after a marriage that sapped at her self-confidence, how she slowly discovers the girl she used to be and the woman she can become was amazing. I also liked how she put the hero's behaviour towards her on notice and demanded what she deserved. Another great outing in this series!

I really enjoyed reading this, but the hero, Jackson, just about ruined it for me. He has to be the most stubborn and stupid guy I've read in a long time. He was constantly apologizing for kissing her and pushing her away. Maybe he should have noticed that she wasn't pushing him away and just maybe she had the same feelings for him. But he wouldn't ever ask or admit what he felt. He would rather make a promise to not touch her until he figured it out. Dumb ass. His redemption for me was that he was a great dad and I did like his apology and proposal at the end.

Putting Jackson aside, I loved the other characters in here. Mama Wilder was a hoot. Jesse was swoony. I hope Fiona and Mike and up together. I may check out more of this series.

A wonderfully engaging story of friendship, heartache and second chances. Sweetest Mistake by Candis Terry is a fun and sexy read and everything I wanted from the Sweet, Texas series!

When Abby Morgan strolls back into town intent on fixing up her parents old house and then moving on with her life, she knows she’s going to run into Jackson Wilder, she’s just hoping she can keep her distance from her old best friend. The last thing she wants is for her feelings to show through and for her to get her heart crushed…again. Easier said than done though. Jackson’s still hot as ever and determined to be in her way.

Jackson has always had a thing for Abby, but has just never been able to admit it. He’s too afraid of losing his best friend when she rejects him. But she’s back in town and he just can’t seem to keep his lips to himself. Abby’s had a rough go of it since she left Sweet and Jackson is trying to help her rediscover herself and forget her jerk-of-an-ex-husband. The only problem is that he is still very attracted to her and scared to death to let her know it.

While the whole town of Sweet sees that Jackson and Abby belong together, Jackson and Abby just can’t seem to get together. Is their friendship going to stand in the way of a once-in-a-lifetime kind of love? Maybe a little help from the rest of the Wilder family will help steer them in the right direction…

Loved this book! The Abby and Jackson’s story was simply amazing. Their back story and chemistry made this story such a wonderful and enjoyable read. The setting of Sweet, Texas was delightful, with all the supporting characters that makes this series so much fun to read. But don’t worry, even though it’s part of a series, this is a great stand-alone read also! I loved the way that Jackson’s ex-wife was portrayed in such a wonderful light and the relationship that developed between Jackson’s daughter Izzy and Abby was heartwarming. Jackson’s mom, Jana, and brothers also helped to add a bit of humor to the story. And of course, I simply couldn’t wait for Jackson and Abby to finally find their happy ending! I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Something Sweeter. Well done Ms. Terry!

Abby has come home to Sweet to fix her parents house and sale it. She left years ago married a rich man and hasn't been back. She has never forgot Jackson her best friend and the guy she always loved. Now divorced she would love to see if they could be more than friends. Jackson has never forgot Abby or the fact that she left him and Sweet years ago. He is afraid to get to close in case she walks away again. He has enough nightmares without added more to the mix. They both are hard headed and it will take a lot to get them to see they belong together.

Jackson in the sexy fireman that if you had a fire you would want there. He is hard headed and stubborn but he is also so sweet and caring. Seeing him with his daughter will melt your heart. Abby is afraid of what people think of her but she shouldn't worry. She is beautiful, caring and so good around people. She has a heart of gold. I love both these characters.

I am so glad I got to go back to Sweet, Texas. I fell in love with this place and characters in the first book. Jackson comes from a family that has suffered loss but they all care so much for each other. His family considers Abby one of the family and you see how close they all are. I have to say I adore all of them. This book is a wonderful one about two great people who need to stop worrying and get together. You want to lock them in a room till they work things out.I love Jackson's ex as well. She is a great woman. I will say I was worried a few times that Abby and Jackson wouldn't work things out. This is amazing love story anyone will enjoy. I already am impatiently waiting the next book.

It's official. Candis Terry is one of my favorite adult contemporary romance authors. This says a lot because I have found that adult romances are really hit or miss with me. Candis Terry is a complete hit. I really enjoyed last year's Anything But Sweet and when I saw this pop up for review, I jumped at the chance to get back to my favorite small town of Sweet, Texas and those sexy Wilder brothers.

I really liked Jackson. He is a good man, a great father, and a hard worker. He is a former Marine and is now a firefighter. He not only works for the San Antonio department, but volunteers at their local station as well. Jackson is a bit of a stubborn character, though, as I'm discovering most of the Wilder men are! He doesn't always say what he feels and that tends to cause problems for him.

The book starts with him realizing that his former best friend Abby has returned to town. Jackson harbors a lot of hurt feelings toward her, as she disappeared from his life seven years ago after he deployed to Afghanistan. Jackson wants answers and I can't really blame him. We learn that these two were very close and shared a lot of moments together. Not only were they each other's first kiss, but they also were each other's firsts. There's a lot of history between them and Jackson can't believe that she left without a trace and wasn't there for him after losing his brother and father.

I felt bad for Abby. She, like Jackson, doesn't say what she feels either and these two end up dancing around what they really want from one another. Abby definitely made poor decisions seven years ago, but she did what she felt was the best at the time. She was trying to protect her heart from Jackson and thought leaving was the only way to do so. Now, she's back in Sweet to help get her parent's house ready to sell and Jackson Wilder comes storming back into her life. Abby left town to avoid heartbreak, but her life didn't end up quite the way she planned. Her marriage didn't work out and ended much the same way her and Jackson did. Abby is a bit lost, trying to figure out what she wants and where she wants to be.

I love Abby and Jackson's chemistry. Jackson can act as blasé as he wants in regards to his feelings for her, but deep down he is just afraid of what will happen. He's known loss in his life and has also been married once before. I think he's afraid Abby will take off again and his heart wouldn't recover again. There were a few moments where I literally wanted to smack Jackson upside the head for being such an idiot with her. I'm glad Abby decided to take control and tell him how she finally felt. It was a bold move on her part, but I was cheering her on because Jackson needed to get his head out of his ass and see what he would be losing.

I love that we get to see a lot of the characters from the first book in the series also. Reno and Charli show up, as does their mom Jana, who is a lot of fun and always meddling with her sons' love lives. She's a good woman and would do anything to see her boys happy. She also loves Abby and doesn't hold a grudge against Abby for leaving. We also get to see more of Jesse, Jackson's and Reno's brother, who is known to be quite the playboy. I'm really looking forward to his story next because there's a lot more to Jesse than people think.

We also get to see Jackson interact with his daughter Izzy and it will absolutely melt your heart. He's a great dad and loves his daughter to pieces. He is on good terms with his ex-wife, Fiona, and I was glad to see her accept Abby even though she still loves Jackson. However, she understands that Jackson doesn't feel that way and doesn't hold that against him or try to interfere with his life.

Overall, I thought Sweetest Mistake was a great addition to the Sweet series and watching Jackson and Abby forgive each other as well as fall for each other again was really what drew me in. If you are looking for a good love story with great characters, this is the series to check out!

Originally reviewed on These Pretty Words.

After a stint of reading shorter novellas, I was excited to really dive in to a full-length novel and really get to know the characters and their stories. Sweetest Mistake was certainly sweet and it was not a mistake to read. Abby and Jackson were best friends growing up, until Jackson enlisted in the Marines following 9/11 and left for Afghanistan and Abby went running to Houston without a word of goodbye to anyone. Now 7 years later, she’s back in Sweet to get her parents’ house ready to sell and Jackson’s looking for answers.

I really enjoyed the whole cast of characters in this story. Jackson’s got all sorts of things going for him: sweet, southern boy; ex-Marine; Fire-fighter; loving father to an adorable little girl…what’s not to love? I feel like I connected really well with Abby as well. Having grown up in a loveless household where she always had to be the one to step up and take responsibility, she went looking for love in the wrong place, only to have the life she’d been building ripped away from her in one fell swoop. I felt like she was strong, even if she was a little too stubborn. She didn’t go crying to anyone when things went wrong, she picked herself up and kept going. I loved watching her transformation from the perfect, wealthy trophy wife into the woman she really was. My heart broke for her when I found out why her jerk ex-husband filed for divorce. I hurt for her and for Jackson when she learned about Jackson’s brother and father dying while she’d been away without her ever knowing of their loss. I cheered for her every time she took a stand and made steps to own her own life.

The supporting cast of small town family and friends were fantastic, even when they were sticking their noses in where they didn’t belong. Each one was an individual and felt well rounded, even if we only briefly got to see them on the page. I really loved how the author was able to weave such strong connections between all the characters so that even the ones we never got to meet in person still felt real and important, whether good or bad.

My only hold out with this one is the abundance of drama caused by simple lack of communication between Abby and Jackson. It seemed like they were constantly one-step-forward, two-steps-back and oftentimes they were issues that so easily could have been solved if one of them just opened up their mouths and TALKED to each other! One instance in particular was especially frustrating and I really wanted to remind Jackson about what happens when you assume something.

4 stars. Communication issues aside, I really enjoyed this novel and my visit to Sweet, Texas and their sweet, Southern characters.

Review from Backchatting Books

Firefighter and former marine Jackson Wilder doesn’t know how to deal with his former best friend Abigail Morgan. He shared an awful lot of firsts with her but then she abandoned him for the bright lights of the biggest city. Now she is back in town after her marriage failed and he can’t resist the urge to get in touch with her again.

Jackson is the epitome of a clueless male who doesn’t know what he had until he lost it. He had feelings for Abby but doesn’t want to pursue them in case he lost her but his seeming ambivalence made her leave the first time. He tried a relationship with another woman but still carried a torch for Abby. I enjoyed him most as a character when he was interacting with his daughter. He let her put makeup on him, knows a huge amount of Disney movie references and tries to put her needs first. There are hints at PTSD that probably weren’t needed as he was complex enough as a character – particularly when his ex and Abby started to become friends.

Abby returned to Sweet ostensibly to get her parents’ house ready for sale. She is at somewhat of a loose end after her sham of a marriage ended and Sweet acts like a soothing balm. She slots back into her old ways fairly quickly and with a little help from Jackson’s mother, reignites their friendship. So much of Abby’s back story relates to her ex husband and the insensitive way he treated her. I would have liked more on how she acted before he turned her into a perfect mannequin.

The romance itself is fairly predicable but the journey along the way is enjoyable. One issue I have is that I still can’t tell the Wilder brothers apart as there isn’t that much to distinguish their voices or appearances. I suspect they will be fleshed out properly when they get their own book but it is a mite confusing at times when there are three of them together. All in all, an enjoyable quick read.

Absolute 4 1/2 star read!

Jackson is all out sexy, and all out stubborn but the most lovable pain in the ass hero I’ve ever met. Abby Morgan is my girl. She survived a marriage so like mine, except for the wealth, that I have to side with her. She’s forward, outspoken, and knows what she wants and will do whatever it takes to get it, including a striptease that drives Jackson wild even when he’s fighting his fear of losing control if he were to touch her.

SWEETEST MISTAKE, book two in the Sweet, Texas series by Candis Terry didn’t capture my heart and tear it to shreds like ANYTHING BUT SWEET did but I enjoyed every minute of it. Candis has created the most exceptional cast of characters living in Sweet, Texas. The Wilder family contains swoon-worthy men, a mother you want to roll up in a hug and take home with you, and townspeople that make you want to move to Sweet. I had a problem with how the ending was rushed but understand that sometimes these things happen. But don't worry, the story was filled with enough angst, flirtations, humor, sweet moments, and hot sexual tension to keep you glued to each page.

SWEETEST MISTAKE by Candis Terry is a funny, sweet, down home tale about friendship, falling in love, and regrets that can haunt you far down the road. It’s about what happens when two people fear admitting their feelings because they value the relationship that’s always been there not realizing that even the deepest love must start with a friendship. I highly recommend reading SWEETEST MISTAKE by Candis Terry for no other reason that it features the sexiest hero, the most likable heroine ever, and the Wilder men, who are absolute tens on any hot list.

So, I'm a diehard Candis Terry fan. All the way. I have been ever since discovering Second Chance at the Sugar Shack. Her stories have a lovely small town feel which I wholeheartedly enjoy, they are full of laughs, characters you just want to take home with you and hang out with, or maybe just move to their town. Like Sweet, Texas. Yes, i wanna go! Where do I sign up? How do I get there?

I questioned Candis the other day, wondering how is it she just gets better and better? Sweetest Mistake goes down so far as my favorite Candis Terry book. Firstly, I LOVE the Wilder family! They have their share of quirks, fights, and drama of course, but whatever happens, they work through it, because that's what family does. So, one by one, the Wilder boys are succumbing to love. Now, it's Jackson's turn. Oh, but he's NOT going to make it easy. Nope. Stinkin' stubborn man. But that's okay, I love him anyway, sexy stubbornness and all.

So here's the deal. Jackson and Abby grew up as best friends. But, a few years ago, it began to grow into something more. Stubborn pride and a few choices later, Abby left town not knowing what she meant to Jackson.

Now both are facing each other again, suffering a heartache of their own. Yeah, the sparks begin. The walls are up, but we all know what's bound to happen. Those walls are going to come down. That's just how love works.

In a nutshell, I loved this book. Lots of emotions, lots of family fun... The one thing I felt a little thrown off about was near the end. The big moment seemed abrupt, but it still came together well. Can't wait for the next installment!

3.5 stars.

Jackson was an idiot. Abby had such patience to wait out his issues. Honestly, he needed to grovel a bit more than what was in the book. Now when I looked past his stupidity in the trust and commitment department I liked the guy. Overall this was a cute small-town romance. And as a sidenote, the MVP goes to Jesse. Like seriously he was a lot of fun so I'm looking forward to his book. And I see Fiona and Hooch on the horizon too which sounds good to me.

I iz disappoint.

I had such high expectations and while this book was never really bad, it just didn't work for me. I didn't click with the characters and had a hard time getting behind the romance... which is weird since I will forever root for best friends.

I didn't like this one as much as I liked the first book, but it was still a decent second chance romance. I think I wanted a bit more chemistry between the two of them.

Sweetest Mistake is the 2nd installment in Candis Terry's Sweet, Texas series. In this book in hop right back into the newly renovated town of Sweet and the rambunctious Wilder family. While Reno is off helping Charli pack her stuff up and move to Sweet, we spend some time with Jackson Wilder. "The man oozed sexuality as if at birth he'd been granted an extra ration of snap and sizzle." Jackson is focused on his life being a father to the adorable Izzy and his full time position as a Fire Fighter.

There are several things everyone needs to know about small towns and Texas. 1) "Everyone in the Lone Star State knew that the higher the hair, the closer to God." 2) Gossip never stops! On his way to work, he is stopped by a local deputy and informed that his Best Friend, Abby is back in Sweet. And with that simple piece of information, Jackson's entire world if flipped upside down. Abby and the Wilder family had grown up as one, he was the daughter Jana never had. When she split for Houston without an warning and cut all of Sweet out of her life - Jackson had been beyond hurt. With the loss of Jared, Joe and his marriage - he was alone. He is beyond angry that his best friend had bailed. Before he knew it, he was driving to her old house to get an explanation.

Things don't always go according to plan. This story of Jackson and Abby attempting to re-kindle a friendship that spanned over 10 years was difficult on both parties. (and me!!!) Often they found themselves slip into the banter and ease of yesterdays and when a stolen glance or a lingering touch caused one to think to long, all hell broke loose. "She looked amazing, and as she came toward him, a frission of electricity tingled in his hands. Below his waist, there was a whole lot of hell yeah going on."

It seemed that EVERYONE in Sweet knew they loved each other, except for them. Hell, Fiona (Izzy's Momma) even knew the first time he said Abby's name. Both have always been too afraid, too dense, too young or too stubborn to lay their feelings on the table. Trust and believe, the wonderful people of Sweet won't let it go! Momma Jana is all about setting up awkward and uncomfortable situations. After all, she is getting older and she wants more grandbabies! "If they want tacky, we'll give it to them right here in Sweet." I would kill to be her daughter-in-law! I mean who wouldn't want to be snuggled up to one of those Wilder men in their Wranglers and boots? *swoon* They find themselves in uncomfortable situation after uncomfortable situation, and I love it. Each time, one of them is trying to push the envelope while the other has decided it isn't the right time. One of my favorite interactions is this one:

"You going swimming or something?"
"No."
"So you're what, just going to stand around looking fantastic in your underwear?"

Jesse might be my favorite Wilder brother! His methods to light a fire under Jackson's ass are classic! And his assistant problem is the funniest situation I have ever heard of, even after the reality of it all comes to light. This playboy gives Chester, Sweet's oldest living playboy, a run for his money with the rumors that surround his new assistant each couple of weeks. Jesse is just like the rest of the Wilder family when it comes to looking out for each other by any means necessary. "Sparkplug" (Abby's nickname) is no exception to that rule! Jesse learned the most from his Momma's ways! I think when Jesse finally finds his match in life, it is going to be FIREWORKS. (Loud and explosive!)

Date auctions, wedding plans, awkward conversations between an ex-wife and current girlfriend, fires to be put out, engagements (YES that is plural!) a pair of crutches, a pregnancy and some house plans is what you will find (AND MORE) in this trip to Sweet. I can't give away all the juicy details, but this book had me on a roller coaster of emotions. I wanted to smack Jackson upside the head so many times I lost count, but I loved him no less. And while Jesse is my favorite Wilder, so I am super excited to get my hands on the next book, Something Sweeter, I am just as excited to be able to catch up with Abby & Jackson and Charli & Reno.

When Abby finally gets through Jackson's tough skull, there is one line that stuck (pun intended!) with me well after I finished the book: "You pray really hard that life will hand you a bouquet of roses instead of thorns. That's all you can do." I just loved when she said this. It tied the entire story up with a pretty bow, like the ones Miss Giddy wears.

ROCKING JOB Candis and FIVE STARS from me for this one. I adore a stubborn love story!

Jackson and Abigail were the best of friends; they were each other’s firsts (first kiss, first sex), before Jackson left for the Marines and Abigail left Sweet without saying goodbye. Now Abigail returns after her marriage crashed and burned. Jack still feels hurt because Abigail cut ties with him and the town – she wasn’t even there where he needed her the most – but he can’t deny that the attraction is still there. Jackson still cares for Abigail’s well being even if he is adamant not to go down that road of hurt again.

The Sweetest Mistake is only the second book from Candis Terry that I have read – and the second installment of her “Sweet, Texas” series. But already she climbs on my authors-to-watch list in the genre of contemporary small-town romance. I highly enjoyed the first book of this series and had been given clues in Anything but Sweet that Jackson and Abigail had history. I couldn’t help but immediately jump to read their own happy ending.

This book provides two themes that I love the most from my romance: second chances and friends-to-lovers. I came to really love the heroine in Sweet. Abby is strong – despite the ashes of her failed marriage, she is not turning herself into a pity party girl. Yes, the decision that she took seven years ago was a poor one, it drove her away from the person she loved the most … but Abby also owns up to her mistake and tries not to beg for second chances. Abby did apologize for not being there for Jackson when Jared and Joe died, saying it was because she didn’t know. I really love Abby, she is down-to-earth, compassionate, and she knows what she wants now, even if she is lost previously. For me, Abby is just an admirable heroine.

Jackson, on the other hand, managed to frustrate me several times. Honestly, I wanted to grab into the pages and knock his head for being such an idiot. But I love Abby too much to give the man she loves a brain concussion *lol*. But really … while Jackson might be swoon-worthy (especially because he is such a great Dad to his two-year-old Izzy), his fear over Abby leaving her again, his worry of opening up his heart and grabbing the chances to be happy, become a repetitive issue in here. Gah, you’re lucky that I still think you’re redeemable, Jackson Wilder!!

As with the first book, the supporting casts are great as always. This time, I’d like to give attention to Jackson’s ex-wife, Fiona. Fiona understands that she and Jackson are better off as friends. They got married only because she got pregnant. Even if she admits that Abby was there throughout her marriage to Jackson, Fiona stays friendly to Abby. She is not a horrible bitter bitch, and I’m so happy for that fact. It’s good to see a positive ex-wife in a romance story.

It is a satisfying sequel, most definitely. It’s heartwarming, light-hearted, sweet without being overly saccharine, and it is a very, very good romance. I am happy that there are more boys in the Wilder family, because I’m not ready to say goodbye to this town anytime soon. Bring me Jesse and Jake!

You might want to hate Abby – but I don’t. She did what she thought was right that time. She had always loved Jackson with all her heart. But what can she do when she didn’t know where she stands with him in the first place? So the first man who promised her the stars, the moon and the whole galaxy came into her life – she got hitched. What she didn’t expect is that, she might be given the whole universe – but never love, and one thing she’d wanted the most. She became a trophy wife. After a humiliating divorce, she went back to home to Sweet, Texas and came face to face with her first love, her biggest and sexiest mistake (as the blurb would call him). When he once again offered her friendship, Abby realized that she wanted more from this guy. She might not have the guts to tell him how she feels about him in the past, but he’s ready now. The only question is – would he be willing to take the risk with her?

Jackson Wilder has loved Abby for a long, long time. Her leaving him, and not even showing up during the time he needed her most hurt. After all, she was his best friend. Why in the world would she just disappear into his life and marry someone else? Now she’s back in town – she looked totally different, but still the Abby that he used to know. He still want her badly, but how can he possibly get into a relationship with her when he couldn’t really trust her not to leave him once again??

Abby may have made some mistakes, but I really don’t blame her. Jackson didn’t really promise her anything and would pretend nothing happened to them. It didn’t just hurt her feelings, but her ego as well. For a brave ex-marine and firefighter – our hero seems to lose his courage to finally tell what he feels about her. If he had only been open and honest to her and even to himself – they wouldn’t have wasted five years of their lives…

I had so much fun with the Wilder family – they’re an amazing bunch. His mother is playing matchmaker, his brothers often teases him, and his adorable little girl is just so cute. He might have been lousy when it comes to speaking his heart out, but he’s a fantastic father to Izzy. So I might hate him at times, but when the little girl comes into the picture, you can’t help but to fall in love with this guy.

I enjoyed reading this book. What love story is more stronger, more real, and more steadfast than what started out as friends. They may have wasted a whole lot of time, suffered so much heartache, and have needed a whole ton of help from the people they love – but once they had finally got their heads out of their a**es (most especially Jackson), their love story was worth the wait!

Very good friends to lovers story. There were parts that had me laughing out loud and others that had me reaching for the tissues. Abby and Jackson had been best friends for a long time. They shared a lot of things, including some important firsts. But shortly after Jackson left for the Marines, Abby left Sweet behind for the big city, with no word of explanation and no more contact. Now she's back to get her parents' house ready to sell and has to confront her past.

Seeing each other again brings back a lot of emotions that have been buried. Abby had left Sweet behind because she had been in love with Jackson and he didn't appear to return the feeling. She married a man who ended up only wanting a trophy wife that he could mold and control into what he wanted. When her marriage ended Abby was left feeling pretty worthless. Now she's trying to figure out what to do next with her life.

Jackson has had a hard few years. He saw his brother die in the war, his father died shortly thereafter. He married and had a child, but the marriage didn't work out. He blames himself for all of it. Abby's arrival is Sweet has him remembering the good times, but also the hurt from when she disappeared.

I loved seeing the two of them back together. Jackson tried to hold on to his anger when he first saw her but he couldn't do it. He was too happy to see her again. At first he's determined to stay away from her but their former friendship is too strong. I loved the way that he dragged her off to get "real food" and his efforts to help her overcome her fears about being back in town. Next thing he knows he's helping her with the house and they're spending time together. Abby is loaded with guilty feelings of her own over the way she left. She's surprised by how easily she and Jackson slip back into their old relationship.

It doesn't take long before each of them really wants more out of that relationship but neither one has the courage to make the first move. Everyone around them can see that they belong together. Abby realizes her feelings pretty quickly but is afraid to tell Jackson how she feels because he is so determined that they just be friends. Jackson spends a long time refusing to admit to himself, much less Abby, that he loves her. There are some great scenes where various members of his family try to help things along, especially the one where Jesse brings her along to help find some lost cows. Abby finally gets to the point where she can tell Jackson how she feels, but his reactions show that he still has issues to overcome. It takes a near tragedy for Jackson to learn to let go of the past and embrace the future.

I also loved the secondary characters. Jackson's daughter Izzy was adorable and he was such a wonderful daddy to her. I even liked his ex-wife, Fiona. It was nice to see an ex who was not a completely nasty person for a change. I'm looking forward to reading her story. I also loved all of Jackson's family members. It was fun seeing his mom deal with all those boys, even as adults. I also can't wait to read Jesse's story, as he's obviously different than everyone thinks he is.

Sweetest Mistake is the first Candis Terry book that I read, courtesy of Crystal. Unfortunately, the first book in the series wasn't available at the library in audiobook format so I went with the second book. It also helped that this is a second chance friends to lovers romance. And I absolutely love those!

As a note, reading the second book did not ruin the first book's plot for me. We do see them in this book but no spoilers are revealed.

But where do I start?

Abigail Morgan left 5 years ago while Jackson Wilder was still in the marines. Now, she is divorced and back in town to sell her parent's house. Now, as with small towns, everyone knows her. So naturally, Jackson KNOWS that she is back and he is dreading running into her. When they finally meet up, sparks immediately fly and both are trying not to fall for each other.

Now here's what bothered me about this. Jackson Wilder and Abigail both married and divorced different people. Jackson, on the other hand, has a 3 (?) year old and Fiona his ex-wife is still present in his life. Which really bothered me A LOT. Now, I know this situation happens in real life but STILL. Plus, Abby and Fiona were already becoming buddy-buddy? Awkward.

Or maybe I am just reading more into this? Plus, Fiona and Jackson's friend had the beginnings of attraction which was another AWKWARD situation.

So, as much as I wanted to love Abby and Jackson's romance, it was tainted by the ex.

The secondary characters really interested me, though. Jesse Wilder is really intriguing and I can't wait to read his own HEA.

The audiobook was read by Xe Sands and it was done really well. The slight Texas accent used didn't distract me from the story. Her pacing was perfect, too!

Reunited lovers and friends–to-lovers are two of my favorite tropes, and Candis Terry offers readers both in this book. While the story picks up at the point of reunion, Terry supplies enough details about Jackson and Abby’s past for readers to understand how rich and multi-layered the history between them is. I particularly liked that these characters are not frozen in time during the seven years that they are apart. They both try to create lives in which the other has no place, and they both make mistakes in choosing a marriage partner.

Abby tries on her parents’ values for size and marries a man who is fabulously wealthy and socially prominent, but it doesn’t take her long to discover that the things her parents covet leave her feeling empty when there is no real love or communication between her and her shallow husband who is more interested in image than in substance. Jackson marries a woman he loves, a good person with whom he has a child that they both adore, but he finds that loving and being in love are not the same thing. One of my favorite scenes shows him patiently allowing his three-year-old daughter to put hair accessories in his hair and makeup on him. Only a doting father who is totally secure in his masculinity would do that. I also really like that Abby and Jackson acknowledge their mistakes. While they each feel that the other contributed to their separation, neither tries to avoid his/her own responsibility. In other words, they have become grown-ups.

What separates Jackson and Abby is a misunderstanding of how the other feels that could have been cleared up with some honest communication. Usually such misunderstandings have me closing the book and muttering imprecations, but Abby and Jackson are young and they value the friendship that has been important to them for much of their lives. Both these factors make me willing to accept the misunderstanding as more than a weak plot point.

Terry has a gift for creating small towns that feel real. I liked her Sugar Shack series, but I think the Sweet series is even better. The widowed Jana Wilder and her sons are all characters with a high credibility quotient and strong appeal, and Joe and Jared, whose deaths occur before the series begins, have a real presence in the books and in the hearts of the surviving Wilders. I’m eager to see the remaining brothers, Jesse and Jake, earn their HEAs, and I am equally invested in seeing the hints of Jana’s romance developed.

If you are a fan of small-town romances with emotionally engaging stories and characters who will win your affection, I recommend Sweetest Mistake. The first book in the series, Anything But Sweet (Reno’s story) is also a good read, one with a rich vein of humor. Jesse’s story, Something Sweeter, will be released on June 24. It’s on my list for 2014.

If you were to ask me who puts out reliable contemporary romance, one of the author’s I’d name would be Candis Terry. She has a knack for writing sweet, without being saccharine, romance with smart, capable characters. I reviewed and enjoyed her last book, Anything But Sweet, so that made requesting Sweetest Mistake a no brainer.

Jackson Wilder is floored when he hears that his old childhood friend/sweetheart has returned to Sweet, Texas. She left without any explanation and cut him completely out of her life. Abby fled from a disastrous marriage and came back to Sweet to put her parent’s house on the market. She had no intention of reconnecting with Jackson again, but he doesn’t waste anytime on asking why Abby left with nary an explanation. Yay for direct heroes!

While her ex-husband did a number on her self-worth, Abby is working on moving forward and starts spending more time in Jackson’s company. Jackson is a brilliant hero. While he’s still hurt and perplexed about why she left, he still treats her with kindness and respect. The only real disconnect that I have with the book is about why Abby cut Jackson completely out of her life for good. They didn’t part on ugly terms exactly, but the separation speaks volumes about how unable Abby was to communicate her feelings to Jackson, and vice versa.

I also really liked the fact that Jackson’s ex-wife wasn’t painted as a horrible, selfish woman. They married after she got pregnant, but came to realize they’d be better off as friends. Now Abby’s ex on the other hand, is the exact opposite. She married a coldly, controlling man who didn’t care to show emotion and asked for a divorce the day after Abby asked for a baby. The book demonstrates quite clearly at the effect this is had on Abby. She’s quite unsure of herself around Jackson, and runs hot and cold at times.

As the book moves along, you see quite clearly that Jackson still loves Abby but is afraid of his feelings for her and this leads to him bungling some of their interactions. That being said, I want more heroes like Jackson. Direct but sensitive, caring and loyal. I enjoyed Abby’s character as well, but to me, she didn’t stand out like he did. The middle of the book loses some ground as Jackson dithers about what to do about Abby, but for the most part, it was a lovely contemporary romance and I’m looking forward to reading more books by Ms. Terry.

Sweetest Mistake sucked me in before I even started reading. My favorite type of romance happens when friends become lovers. The history and passion between the two characters are usually off the charts. So the second I saw the line "When friends become lovers..." in the blurb, I was a goner. I was not disappointed. I loved the tension between Jackson and Abby in the beginning of the book. A mixture of sexual tension and sexual frustration radiated off these two. The best way to describe Jackson is that he is a stubborn jackass. Everyone says that about him... Even his own brothers. And I loved that about him. He's so emotionally raw with the deaths of his brother and father, but he has such a big heart. I melted reading the scenes between him and his daughter. Like Jackson, Abby is also pretty emotionally wounded after being dump by her husband. Technically, she didn't love him, but the way he dumped her royally sucked. Jackson notices that she's changed, but being home again brings out her old self and she's back hanging around the Wilder family and driving Jackson insane. Watching Jackson and Abby was like watching a live wire, waiting it to spark. And boy do they spark together. *ahem...stairs*

As with every other Candis Terry book, there are a lot of crazy-ass, yet supportive, background characters. I loved them as much as I loved Jackson and Abby. Jesse Wilder had me swooning more times than I can count. Can't wait for his book... Jana Wilder is the perfect meddling mama. The character I adored the most in the book was Fiona. She's an amazing ex-wife, mother, and friend. There is a little hint of attraction between her and Jackson's friend. I hope she'll get at least a novella because the girl needs some lovin'.

As the second book in the Sweet, Texas series, I'd have to say it is my favorite so far. I loved the friendship and sexual tension between Jackson and Abby. I loved watching Abby torment the hell out of Jackson. The background characters added to the fun and I can't wait to meet Jake, the youngest Wilder boy. If he has a book, I *think* I know who he'll be paired off with and that'll be a fun one to read. Hell, all of the books in the Sweet, Texas series are fun to read. You rock, Candis! :)

Sweetest Mistake is a second chance romance with humor, angst and family drama.

Jackson Wilder is one of the Wilder boys who has lived in Sweet, Texas most of his life. The five boys all have a strong sense of honor and enlisted in the Marines after 9/11, unfortunately Jared, the oldest of the boys never made it back home. Jackson is employed as a firefighter for San Antonio FD and is a volunteer firefighter for the town of Sweet and has a cute precocious daughter named Izzy.

Abby Morgan left Sweet seven years ago without saying goodbye, Jackson and Abby were best friends but her feelings changed as they got older and when he went to Afghanistan she bolted, afraid he did not feel the same. She married a wealthy man who only wanted her around as arm candy and when she told him she wanted a child, he booted her out of the house saying they apparently had different agendas. So she came home.

Jackson has been angry with her since she left without a word, but they begin a tentative friendship when she returns to see what would happen and realize that their feelings were not that different years ago and maybe they can trust again.

This is another warm, engaging romance from Ms. Terry. I have enjoyed each book she writes and look forward to more. I like the family dynamics of the Wilder clan and enjoy the camaraderie between the brothers and their mother. Although this is the second in the series it can easily be read as a standalone. All in all a sweet romance that I highly recommend for those that love small town romances with engaging characters.

REVIEW:
A great story that takes you through a journey of first loves finding each other all over again. Abby and Jackson have known each other their whole lives and have been in love with each other about that long, but not knowing the other felt the same way. Abby came back to town to sell her parents house after her divorce. Jackson came back to town after being in the military. Their attraction sizzled from the moment they saw each other after Abby had left town so many years ago without an explanation. I loved watching these two reconnect their lives and rekindling their past had obstacles that kept me interested. I look forward to the next book in the series.

I am officially in love with this series! I wish I would have read it sooner. I was so happy this was Jacksons book! And to find out it was a best friends to lovers story was a total win.

Jackson and Abby grew up together and they were each other's first everything. Jackson enlisted in the marines and Abby ran to Houston. They had time apart but now they are getting to know each other again and boy they take you on a roller coaster.

These two have always been in love with each other but now they are lucky enough to get a second chance at it. I really adored these two and I loved all the characters in this series.

I really can't wait to read about the other brothers and see what is in store for them and how that comes about. Terry did a wonderful job building this world and each character. I love the banter between brothers.

The romance was perfectly written to these two and I'm glad they took the time out to go slow and get to know one another again.

This book is what happily ever afters are made of.
