New Hope #2

Tempest Torn

Rate this book
A night of passion. A raging fire. A home destroyed.

The sun returned and Joey and Marti felt they had turned a corner in their relationship. Only when they turned that corner, they ran right into the insurance adjustor, Finn. She wasn't just any woman, though. She was the one woman Joey always believed he’d spend the rest of his life with, but they couldn’t make it work. Soon it was obvious that she didn’t just want to adjust the value of the house, but remind Joey of the value of their relationship, and adjust his attitude about the future.

Suddenly, Joey struggles to choose between two women…one who has never and would never hurt him and one that his heart can’t let go despite the hurt. He’s not the only one with a choice to make. Never again will Marti allow anyone to make her question her own worth.

A tempest brewed. A man is torn. A woman refuses to wait.

“Stormy Surrender,” book one in the “New Hope” series, which I read back in May of 2013, was really good. I enjoyed it so much I couldn’t wait to read the second one, “Tempest Torn.” Unfortunately, I had to wait for quite some time as the publication date was pushed back several times. Finally though, it became available and I couldn’t wait to start it. Talk about a huge disappointment.

The two people I loved in book one, Marti and Joey, I fell out of love with them this round. In fact, I lost all respect for them both. I don’t know who I couldn’t stand the most. Joey, for cheating on Marti on the very same day his ex, Finn, shows up. Instead of going back to Marti and apologizing for dismissing her so rudely, he could’ve spent the night with her but he doesn’t. Keely wouldn’t give him a room at her B&B because of her close friendship with Marti and didn’t want to betray her. So what does he do? Calls Finn asking if he can come over which of course she says yes. WTF? Sleep in your truck. Go to a hotel/motel. Beg Marti’s forgiveness. But don’t go to Finn’s falling into the same pattern of getting drunk and ending up in bed with her. I guess he was hoping she’d changed, but he knew deep down she hadn’t especially when he found her draped over another guy the following day. Hell, she knew Joey saw her, and Finn being Finn, she didn’t care. Talk about a man with no backbone. If that wasn’t bad enough, the next day Marti takes him back on her terms. Some terms. The first night together she says he can share the bed with her but there’d be no sex. After that he’s on the couch for a couple of weeks. I’m sorry but how about kicking the SOB to the curb like he deserves. When Marti confronts him about what he did, his response,

“I was backed into a corner.”

Seriously? Who’s the bigger loser in this one? Marti only ends up looking desperate and needy. So much for being a strong and independent woman.

I have to say that I felt that the overall tone of the novel was completely different from the first one. This read like two immature teens trying to find their way in the dark. While I could feel the love they shared in book one, none was felt here. I also felt that the author threw in more ridiculous and needless drama by including Brantley, a good-looking lawyer renting out a room in her home so she could make some extra cash. Too bad Brantley turned out to be such a loser himself. In fact, this novel is full of losers as I also hated both Keely and Laurel. Talk about irritating.

When all is said and done, I went ahead and read book three, “Under Umbrellas,” just to finish off the trilogy. Turns out “Under Umbrellas” is just as disappointing as “Tempest Torn.” And yes, I know. I should’ve skipped this one altogether. I have no one to blame but myself.

Joey has got to be the weakest lead character to grace the pages of any romance in ages & Marti wins the title 'doormat of 2015'.That was my initial reaction once he did what he did like a rat following the pied piper out the door.

Marti to Joey;

“Staying with Finn...not good.” She sighed heavily. “I’m sure you slept together.” Turning to look him in the eye, she added, “And I don’t mean that you simply shared a bed. Sex.” Her look was accusing.

Writhing under the truth of her words, Joey first offered a pleading look, then realized he couldn't meet her eyes. “What do you want me to say?” he asked. “I was backed into a corner.”

But strangely enough there are some charming aspects to this otherwise far fetched tale of 'sordid in your face betrayal' hence the three stars.

I have been waiting for what seems like forever for this book. I want to say so badly that it was worth the wait and that it was I was needing to have in Marti and Joey's story. I loved that I got to see what was happening in their relationship- or lack of for a better term. In the first book in the series, I had such a connection with Marti and Joey. In this one, the first half of the book was hard to read. I know that for a good book there has to be ups and downs, ins and outs. I get it. I just didn't get that "I can't put this book down" vibe from this book until I was about 3/4ths of the way through the book.
There was some parts that I wondered why it was there in the book, except to have more drama. I do have to say that I love the supporting characters in this book. Laurel, Keely and Rachel are so fun to read. Of course there has to be some character that we all love to hate and you get that with Finn and Brantley.
I won't say that I don't want to read anymore of the series. I am vested now. I love Nicole's books and know that the end of the series will be the story that I want it to be. I just hope that I get the character connection that I had with the first book in the last book in the series.

I was given a ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book was sooooo much better than the first one. The mistakes, the love, the way Joey earned back Marti's trust, it's just really amazing.

Really glad I gave me the opportunity to read Nicole's work because now, I just have to keep reading! !!

This was a horrible, obivious, basic story but somehow I couldn't put it down and needed to know what the final words would be for Marti and Joey. Honestly, it felt like a really bad tv movie but like the best bad tv movies, I loved it in the end and feel like my afternoon wasn't worse off for reading it.

Same review for all 3 books as I read them back to back, I can't really separate them.

This love story is tender. This man is insecure. This woman is genuine.
They connect in a spectacular way. I enjoyed it so much.

There are certain things that I look for in a great book. First,do the characters come to life? Does the storyline move well with no bog downs of fluff? Does it stimulate and move me enough to keep me from putting it down? Were my emotions engaged? Do I want to read more from this writer? Book two of this series definitely hit all those marks and more. With that said, I have to say I was a bit upset with how both main characters were portrayed for awhile. Even with that, this writer kept me engaged and pretty much made me realize why that was done. Thank you Ms. Emma for reminding me that you are the writer and you haven't failed me yet. I am a PNR fan who has also become an Emma Nichols fan. Great job!

2.5 So So Stars!

Source: eARC for Honest Review Courtesy from Author

So it has been a couple of years since I read the first book Stormy Surrender but I have thought about that cliffhanger a lot so I was super excited to finally find out what happens to this couple. The sad part is I think it was too long in between which left me forgetting a lot of details from the first book. I recommend re-reading the first book so you are fresh of mind with Joey and Marti.

In the first book I remember Joey being hurt which made him a dick at times but still a strong character. This time around at times he came across more daft and weak which is never a plus for me with the males of books. The first book in the end Joey is finally moving on from his past Finn to the new relationship of Marti, until a fire and a new insurance agent make an appearance. The insurance agent also happened to be Finn .... Yikes!

For years I was wondering who Joey will pick, and when given the choice he makes a terrible error to only realize what he could have had instead. Marti has been hurt enough and is WAY to forgiving for my tastes. Now that Joey knows who he wants he has to do everything that he can to get her back but with a new potential suitor for Marti's attention he doesn't know what to do.

I liked the idea of this story but crikey but a fork in my eye. I have to admit the storyline tension of assumptions and miscommunications is over done and drives me bat shit crazy. There were some fun characters and elements in this book but Marti and Joey didn't fully jive for me this time around. But since I'm a fan of Nicole's I will continue till the end to see how this story all plays out.

***ARC received in exchange for honest review***

Well…that wasn’t exactly what I had expected.

I’m sad to say that this time around I just wasn’t into the story. The surge of emotions that were present in Stormy Surrender didn’t carry forward into this second installment of the series. The storyline felt a tad rushed and it didn’t flow as smoothly as it could have. Unfortunately there was no real progression either; instead we got a lot of “fillers” and unneeded details or scenes that didn’t really contribute much. While the sex scenes were well written they just seemed out of place with everything that was going on. The chemistry previously present between Joey and Marti wasn’t there to make it all believable.

Again, I hate saying this but I seriously disliked EVERYBODY, from our main characters to Keely, Laurel AND the lawyer. Oh and Finn too of course but that goes without saying. They were all downright annoying. Joey had absolutely no backbone or self-control, Marti was way too needy and quick to forgive, Keely and Laurel were just busy-bodies, and the lawyer who gave me a slight glimmer of hope ended up being clingy and wimpy. What happened here?! In Stormy Surrender I LOVED everything about the story line and our cast of characters, but this bunch just lost their spark.

I know how stressful writing this book was for the author because of some unavoidable mishaps, and I really do feel horrible for not falling in love with it like I did Stormy Surrender, but I know she appreciates my honesty and so that’s why I have to speak my mind. This story just missed the mark for me. Even with all my complaints though I settled on a 3 star review because I definitely don't think it warranted 2 stars.

I was given an arc in exchange for an honest review.
I loved the book! The love story of Joey and Marti. ...

There is a fire and Joey's house is unloveable. Mark has been in a car accident.

Joey is very mineable because he is flawed. He seems to keep making the same mistake and getting re involved with his ex Finn. Finn is a major game player. She only wants Joey when he's involved with a stable relationship. After the fire Finn is the insurance adjuster. Joey is afraid if he doesn't choose her it will affect his claim. In choosing Finn when the three of them are talking he destroys Marti. Joey is a passive person. He decides to wait and let others calm down before he talks to them.
...After he hurts Marti by choosing Finn he realizes his mistake. I am enjoyed seeing him go about trying to win back Marti's trust.
..Marti has been yet again hurt by a guy. She decides to take charge if her life and not be dependent on any man again. She decides to turn her house into a boarding house.
..The contractor is Joey. Who for a reduced price will sleep on her couch cause he has no where else to go and really can't afford to stay at a hotel.
I totally enjoyed watching the relationship between Joey and Marti be rebuilt. So Marti learning to be an independent woman. I really enjoyed her friendship that developed with Reagan; the single mom; who took Marti under her wing to learn about extreme couponing when they met at the store her first time using coupons. Their relationship added humor to the story and made me smile.
I look forward to reading. More books by Nicole Andrews Moore

If you read my review of Stormy Surrender, then you will know that I thought it could work as a stand alone novel if the plot twist at the end was removed. HOWEVER, I am so glad this story is a series! I adored Tempest Torn! The writing is just as beautiful as the first. I am in love with Marti and Joey's love story! I have completely connected with Joey's character. He reminds me a lot of my husband by being Mr. Handyman, a lover versus a fighter, and one who finds it difficult to explain one's feelings.

Both Marti and Joey both have a hard time communicating in this book, things are at odds with them, and they have to figure it all out because of a very interesting plot twist (no I'm not spoiling it for you). Once they arrive on the same page it is like they never skipped a beat! These two were no doubt made for each other, and the cutest thing since sliced bread!

I found myself talking out loud to the characters about the decisions they were making, and then laughing at myself for thinking I could change what was going to happen next. I laughed, yelled a little at Joey, cried out for Marti, and wished that I could be Laurel and Keely's best friend! I am so captivated by Nicole Andrews Moore's writing that I cannot wait for the next book of this series to be released! I am craving more!!

Tempest Torn is going to leave you feeling all sorts of emotions. Just know that right away. Before even starting the book, grabs you tissues and make sure no one is around to hear you scream at you kindle. There is going to be somethings that make you want to wish you could get a hole of Joey by the neck!!

Book two picks up where book one left off. Joey is in the middle of a choice between good and evil. Marty or Finn. The choice should be an easy one for him, since Finn has hurt him so deep in there past. Typical male that he is, Joey chooses the wrong women and then realizes it right away. But the damage is done. Marty is hurt and sad. Can you really blame her? She has opened her heart up again after what she went through with her ex and now it seems she is right back in the same place she was before she came to New Hope.
Joey knows it is going to take a lot of work to win Marty back. He tries his hardest too. Marty now has a house guest, Brantley Carter , that is making Joey crazy (and if you ask me.... up to something as well). Brantley seems to messing with Joey's head more than he should. He is causing him to be all kinds of jealous.

There is a huge shocker in the book, one that I never saw coming. I was blown away. I don't want to spoil anything, but let me tell you, it will make you want book 3 right now!!

I'm not sure if the author meant for Joey to be the "Tempest" in the title, but for me he is the focus of book 2 and he most certainly is torn throughout the book. I love the growth and realization that he goes through. I'm very undecided about Brantley. There are just to many questions with him to decide if he is a good or not. I find it strange that a lawyer decides to settle in a town that doesn't even have a police force to begin with. Secondly, I find it ridiculously suspicious that he just so happens to be the dumped ex of Suzette and he just so happens to randomly pick New Hope to start over and lands in the vicinity of Marti. To many coincidences for me. Either he planned to spite Blaine or he works for Blaine or the author just had poor planning. What I find to be unbelievable is that Laurel and Keely haven't brought this up as nosy as they are or that Joey didn't. Marti is too smart to not question this. Anyways, if he is a good guy, I think New Hope could spawn several spin-offs if the author chooses to go that route. This is a really good series even with a few flaws here and there. I can't wait to see what is in store in book 3.

This book 2 of the series literally picks up where the first one finished.

Joey hooked me in the first book, hook line and sinker as I said before, he is just him, what you see is what you get, but in the part of the story he annoyed the hell out of me, I wanted to kick him in the shins!

HE'S CHOSEN THE WRONG WOMAN!! C'mon Joey, stop using your thingamajig to make your choices and let your heart rule your head man!!!

He soon realizes what he has done, but oh boy, has he burnt his bridges where Marty is concerned, its his own fault.I had no sympathy for him and every sympathy for her.

There is a turn in this book, something that is gonna shock you to the core........it did me.

I have given this 3.07 stars, simply because it drew out a lot of emotions for me, although there were some downsides for me in the book [for example: Joey and Marty's chemistry seemed to have lost some sparkle, and, the fact the Marty forgave too quickly, and can Joey be that bad with no guts and spine?]

Apart from that, the urge to read more in this series still burns just as bright for me.

I love this series I can't wait till the next book in the series comes out. There are lots of different aspects that are in play from the normal southern ladies that like to know everyone's business and offer their 2 cents on everything and protecting the new baby chick so to say. That is total southern hospitality and living in the south I see it all the time. I was surprised then I was worried about the main person I thought I knew what was going to happen at one point and was sobbing and even at times found myself wanting to pray for them before I realized it was a book. I know sounds crazy but the Author Mrs Moore really knows how to draw you in and leave you wanting more. I can't wait till book 3 comes out I know there will be cliffhangers in it for sure. I hopefully there will be many many more books in the series.

TEMPEST TORN - 4 stars

Tempest Torn picks up with Finn making her grand entrance. Bitch. That is my first thought of her. Then there's Joey. Ugh. He pissed me off majorly in TT. He walked away and made excuse after excuse and Marti was just a shell of the person she was in Stormy Surrender but then we meet Brantley and things start to change.

Joey doesn't like the fact that another guy is sniffing around Marti and starts to make his presence more noticeable. Finn is constantly around. She is in the middle of everything that Marti and Joey have going on. It's almost as if Marti may be having a sense of déjà vu. She walked away from this in her previous life so what will she have to do this time?

Will she fight for what's hers, for what she wants? Will Joey convince her that he loves her beyond measure or will Finn get her claws into him and continue to cause issues?

Emotional rollercoaster and sweet romance!

After the shock of the unexpected arrival of Finn in book 1, I was eager to know how it would go down. Joey let me down in so many ways but Marti and her strength and passion for life just brought me back and gave me hope. She is such a loving character and her friends are so fierce. You will always want to have a Laurel and a Keeley in your life. Although I ended up craving cupcakes through the whole book, the story really is confort food for the soul. Overcoming obstacles...piece of cupcake ;) Great love story full of hard realities. Can't wait for the next in the series!!

The second book in the New Hope series picks up right where the first book left off. All of the same characters are back, as well as a few new characters. Marti and Joey are continuing their relationship and trying to move on with their lives. But then Joey's ex re-enters the picture trying to cause trouble. This is where I started to have a hard time with the story. Joey decided to begin a life with Marti but as soon as Finn returns to town he begins to back slide. While I know that no love story is all rainbows and butterflies, I found it hard to believe that knowing Marti's history Joey would have acted like he did. Other than this one hiccup, I love how the characters are developed and how the story line flows. I am excited to read the next installment in this series!

I received an ARC eBook in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book in the New Hope series and it takes up where we left off in Book 1 with Finn's arrival. Joey and Marti face some heartache and separation due to Finn's interference. When Marti takes on a handsome boarder, Joey has to come to terms with how much he has lost due to Finn's meddling. At times heart-breaking, then heart-warming while full of funny moments too, this book has it all! I found it hard to put down as their journey back to each other enthralled me! I highly recommend this series and wait anxiously for Book 3 "Under Umbrellas" to be released on March 31, 2015!!

This review may contain what some consider as spoilers. I don't usually put spoilers on my review, but at this point, it cannot be helped.

There are lots of facepalm moments in the beginning of the story for me. It's a turn off for me when a guy has no balls, but as the story unfolds, it's a relief to see that the characters grow together.

I feel a little dirty while I was reading this book. As we all know from book one, Marti is still married. I just don't agree with their relationship and the direction of their lives.

This book is in between "I liked the book" and "it was an okay book". There were parts that I liked, a few that I loved, and some that was just okay for me.

Its so hard to trust after what Marti went through with Blaine. Then with Finn coming to back Marti's trust in Joey was tested. You really can't blame her. It's going to take a while for that trust to grow.

Joey truly loves Marti but he has never had a relationship like this. He too was burned with his relationship with Finn. He doesn't know how long its going to take for Marti to trust him again. But he will not give up trying.

Trust is hard for anyone but sometimes you just have to give in and go with it.

I received this book for a honest review. I loved it its second in series et continues to follow Marti (Martha) et Joey (Joseph) as drama continues
Emma Nichols knows how to write. I love Brantley a new character et Regan. He is boarding in Marti's home till it's completed a way for her to earn money. With him in picture it brings out Joey jealousy. I'd love to have one of Laurel's cupcakes yum.

Great second book in this series

A small southern town can be a great place for two people who have had bad past relationships to meet and heal and find new hope and new love. However small towns can also add complications because everyone knows everyone and pasts aren't always easy to live down. This book is a great continuation of the series, can't wait to see what happens for the characters next. Definitely drew me in and made me want more.

What a tense book! I just have to say that I really hate Finn and all she did for Joey over time. And when she reappeared in the story, I wanted to give a slap on Joey for committing the same mistake again.
Luckily Marty managed to find an occupation to her days and in the end she and Joey were able to get along again.
This is another beautiful story of Emma Nichols. I loved it!

This is the second book in this series. This picks up where the first one left off. Everything flowed perfectly from the first book to this book. The characters are realistic with real emotions and flaws. I actually loved the side character's as they each had there own spunk & added nicely to the story. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I recommend reading this series.

Unbelievable but sweet!

I just can not believe there can be evil people like Finn in this world, but unfortunately there are! I just started crying after Joey betrayal, I can not believe he could do that to Marti! Like they say, love conquers all and Marti and Joey love is a lot more stronger than anything!
