What do you do when the man of your dreams is murdered right in front of you? For Kenna, vengeance is not an option. Trapped in a prison on a desolate island, she's forced to endure the promise of an eternity of pain, mourning the one person she could always count on.
And it gets worse.
The war is not over. With the threat of the Sirens looming over New Orleans, the coven is going to have to fight to keep what's theirs.
I like to think of myself as a beautiful conundrum. When I am not writing, I can be found surrounded by my amazing family or doing yoga at the beach. I love who I am and don’t mind at all when I get strange looks from people. I am a tattoo covered, child and animal lover who looks forward to destroying peoples preconceived notions of what “someone like me” would be interested in. You only live life once… you may as well make it interesting.
I love to get lost in a good book and hope that everyone will get lost in mine.
For awhile, Kenna was riding high on the fact that she was a newly turned vampire. Power was within her grasp, and she could do anything she put her mind to. Granted, that all changed when she gave into the bloodlust coursing through her veins. Who wouldn't? To have a life in your hands, watching the person beg for mercy . . . That's a high no one will ever come off of.
Arthur tried his best to help her through the craziness. Sadly, it ended with his being murdered before her very eyes. Though Kenna doesn't know who ordered Arthur's demise, she can't help but to blame herself for his death. She loved him, after all. He was good to her, and did everything to help her through the transition of becoming a vampire. To know that she'll now have to live her life without him is difficult.
Determined to free herself from the prison she now finds herself in, Kenna wonders if she'll be able to get out at all. Her captors have promised her pain and suffering. They're intent on getting the darkness out of her. How that is possible, she doesn't know, nor does she want to. She knows she needs to hold out long enough to set herself free. Her captors must pay for what they've done to her.
For Kenna, it doesn't matter that there's a war on the horizon. Her only concern is to exact vengeance on those that have done her wrong. Arthur's death must be avenged. If she's to succeed in doing so, she'll need to place her trust in someone else's hands. The question is, how can she do that when she's not sure who's trustworthy in the first place?
The second book in The Rules trlogy, Don't Feed doesn't disappoint. We find Kenna knee-deep in turmoil, blamed for the deeds she's committed against those who deserved it. Jennifer draws out her characters' emotions in such a way that you can't help but to feel for them. Loved the nonstop action. She's definitely set things up for book three, and I can't wait to see what happens next for Kenna. Will she come out on top? Only time will tell.
I received a complimentary copy of Don't Feed (The Rules Trilogy) from the author for review. But this does not affect my honest review!
Don't Feed was an awesome read! I read Don't Kill Dinner where Kenna first encounters Arthur (Vampire) which causes her life to change forever. In this sequel, Kenna is reeling from witnessing what she thought was Arthur... the man she loves... killed before her eyes. But when she realizes this is not so...she experiences both anger and jubilation. Arthur explains that he along with several others, were working on removing the darkness that had entered Kenna by the end of the first book; In the first book she had gone rogue and began killing humans..who she deemed unfit and bad. But this was against the rules of her coven, (taught to her by Arthur her mentor and lover) where no human was to be killed. So now on Bora, Bora, Kenna goes through withdrawal and intense training to aide her in the upcoming fight against the Sirens....many twists, turns and surprises are in store for the reader in Don't Feed!
I enjoyed both books...they were fun, sexy and fast paced. I enjoyed the new take on Vampire society and the introductions of the Sirens! I look forward to book 3 and I believe Jennifer Martinez is an author to watch!:O)
Kenna is in a prison in Bora Bora. Arthur was presumably murdered in front of her. This is a short, fast paced story. I was liking this one better than the first book. I think the writing has improved and is more polished. Kenna was seriously out of control in the first book. She was power hungry, without mercy and without morality. Now she has to pay for her mistakes and be reformed. I liked reading about Kenna's transformation into a caring protector. There is a war brewing between sirens and vampires. The story has a lot of action and excitement. There are a lot of interesting side characters but I liked reading about Kenna. The story jumps from Kenna's plight to the side plot and side characters and vice versa. Sometimes the transition was a bit too abrupt. Since the books are getting better, the third book in the trilogy should be the best of all. I look forward to reading it. 4 stars.
“Don't Feed” begins immediately after author Jennifer Martinez' earlier work, “Don't Kill Dinner”. This short-cut was incredibly frustrating for me, as circumstances prevented me from reading this book for 2 years after I'd read the earlier work, and the details were obviously a bit fuzzy to me. (I would suspect many other readers may find themselves in similar situation, although their reasons may differ from mine.)
Don't give up on the book, though. Your memory of what occurred in the previous book will come back to you over time as you read on. Eventually – and soon – the book will become almost as enjoyable as the the first book in the series was. Your recollection of vampire society in New Orleans will return, and your enjoyment of the book will hopefully be comparable to what you experienced with the first book.
Ms. Martinez, I understand you're working on the completion of the Trilogy – PLEASE don't make it so hard for us to catch up with the action – it's frustrating!! And, I suspect without a bit of a flashback, new readers will be TOTALLY lost and disappointed!
Oh, and the ending … looking back, I should have been able to predict it. Hindsight reveals that you provided all the clues, both within the text and between the lines – BUT, of course, it ended up catching me by surprise. Good job there, Ms. Martinez!!
Overall – Recommendation to potential readers: READ THE FIRST BOOK IN THE SERIES BEFORE READING THIS ONE, and don't wait too long between the two. BUT under those conditions, you should find this book a very nice read, with an engaging protagonist and room for growth in the upcoming (at some point) 3rd book of the trilogy.
My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 unicorns - I really liked it!!
**Received the ebook as part of IO tours for an honest review
This cover is another beautiful cover :) Love it, and it is what attracted me to the series :)
This particular book is about Kenna’s journey back from the dark. I really liked this book, but I think I learned to love other characters more. While Kenna is the main character, I think I was more entranced with the lives of everyone around her rather than her herself.
I think there was a lot of growth for Kenna, and it is definitely setting up for some major changes in book 3. You learned a lot about the other vampires and the sirens.
I am not the grammar police. But I know some people really have a problem with seeing errors, you might want to wait on reading this if you are one of those people. I can love a story with errors and always share them with the author so the story can be made better, but that’s me :) ***per author this book has already been corrected :)
I think another who loves this author’s great sense of humor or paranormal vampire stories with humor will totally enjoy this series. I will definitely be looking for the next book in the series when it comes.
I loved seeing how thing developed. After Don't Kill Dinner, I was left feeling like something horrible was going on! I've been waiting to see where Kenna stands. Don't Feed didn't disappoint! I was excited (I promise no spoilers) to see how things unfolded and where the characters ended up!!! I'm dying for the next one!!!! Love these books!
