A tsunami brings the first wave of disaster to Luke and Mai, but the chaos that follows is even more dangerous. The two young people have to deal with basic survival, looting, finding lost relatives and a kidnapping. A thrilling story, right from real life. Reading level: grade 3.2. Lexile 470L. Interest level: grades 5-10.
Not one of the best "HIP" books, but my students ate it up. Once again, high interest, low volume, and even with the slowest reading and interspersed with daily activities, it can be taught in class over a week.
I know I shouldn't complain about a book designed to get students hooked back into reading, but I'm going to do it anyway. My students and I were a bit confused by Kasem, one of the main characters. He adds very little to the story, and the other characters seem to treat him in a piss poor manner most of the time. He sometimes can speak perfect English (though conspicuously, he seems to be unable to speak without adding the word "man" to his sentences) and at times cannot utter basic sentences. I feel like the book would have been much better had it focused only on Luke and Mai.
My students (well, most of them) give it a 5. I give it a 3.
