I don't read many short story collections, but this is a good one by a favorite author. There are six short stories here, from a wrestling competition between a human and a shape-shifting alien, two very different stories of alien invasion, and early stories in the Star Rigger universe. Convincing world building and solid characterization are always features of Carver's work, and the plotting here is tight and focused. The unifying theme of the collection is human/alien interaction, not always to the benefit of the humans.

All in all, this is a very pleasant way to while away a few evenings, or a few summer afternoons out the sun and the heat.

Recommended.

I bought this book.

Nothing special, but a pleasant collection of short SF stories. Intergalactic amateur wrestling is an interesting concept, but I'd prefer more of a VKM version with professional wrestling instead. Pets sucking out your soul to nurture its growing pregnancy? Heartbreaking, but having a special pet is heartbreaking sometimes. A good way of spending a couple of hours, but nothing here to really recommend it to others.

Pretty good vintage sci-fi. Reminds me of the stories I read when I was a teenager. The stories are short, entertaining and several of them were eventually turned into novels if you want to read more about that particular created world. Nice diversions.

A thoughtful collection of short stories that each explore different human-alien relationships
