Once or twice I wondered whether I could be bothered to read right to the end, but nevertheless I persevered and finished it. Such a strange, dated sort-of story - was it popular when it was first written? I have not read anything else by J B Priestley and reading this does not encourage me to try more of his work....
It seemed a book from a different world, where a young-ish man would travel off to the opposite end of the globe on a 'treasure hunt' with 2 companions, recommended to him by his now-deceased uncle. His relationships with women, as described in the book, also seemed from a very far-away and distant world. First written in 1932, the edition I read was a Pan paperback published in 1967 - not quite sure why anyone would bother to reprint this..
I will finish by quoting Priestley's introduction, written in 1933 in Highgate, London: 'This is, if you like, a novel of adventure, but the adventures are really of the spirit. At least, that was my intention.'
