I'm really glad I decided to stick with this series. I put it down after all the Asa drama in the previous volume, but this was such a fantastic volume!

I actually really liked how much importance Haruna placed on kissing being special with the person you love. Yes, she might have been extra as she usually does with stations, but I just thought it a really good message about it. I thought it was handled really well (overall) and the reactions that both Haruna and Yoh had were really positive in that again, kissing is special.

What made me really love this volume even more though was Haruna's birthday! That was SOOOOOOOOO sweet! It really oozed happy vibes, despite Yoh's stress. LOL! It was touching and I need to read it again when I'm not sleep deprived because I really want to appreciate how he continually opens up and surprises her (and the readers).

I am writing about the overall series. I finsihed reading the entire series on January 7, 2011.

The overal series was pretty great. I gave it a 4 star rating. Let's talk about some things now.

I. Love. Yoh. I just love him. He is so adorable! Andd I hate that I have to say that. But I can't help myself, he is SO ADORABLE! ANd cool, and awesome, and hot(lol) and all those other wors to descibe him. I love his personality and I love how he is easily embarrassed. He is just so ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!!! I want him. And for all of you who think this is creepy(which it kinda is), I tend to fall for awesome fictional male characters. I LOVE YOH. And you would too if you ever read the manga.

Haruna. In the beginning of the manga I thought she was realy, really stupid. REALLY STUPID. And then later on I thought she was realy, really annoying and too much of a perfectionist. In the end, I ended up liking her. Maybe not in the ending because I didn't know my feelings for her in the end. She kinda made me have this weird angry-nice-weird-awkward vibe towards her. Her character is really thought out though. But overall, she's all right.

In the beginning of the book, I thought the whole concept was really kinda dumb. I mean, a love coach. That's just kinda ridiculous and desperate, which Haruna was, but pathetic. Though that whole concept fades later n, it was just really ridiculous. Ri-dic-u-lous. Ridiculous.

THere are many parts that made me laugh or gag when I was reading this manga. Let's look back in my brain and take a moment to laugh at them. HAHAHAHHA! LOL! LAWLS! OMG! OMG! HUH... FUNNY! AHHHAHAHHA LMAO!AHHAHAHH!hhohohohohohoho! omg! HILARIOUS.... Sigh... Huh... Funny.

Overall, the series was really great and funny and entertaining and sweet and sad and I recommend it to everyone I know and don't know. Though, the guys out there might now like it.

P.S. I really hate Assa.
I like Fumi.
I love Asaoka. ♥♥♥

So, really, I assure you that I do, in fact, read. I just don't list all the comics on here, so that I can conceal the sheer volume of how much I consume.

But I'm popping back in with volume 8 of HSD because it's my favorite of the series so far, and because I just feel such affection for the central couple: super-reserved, slightly acerbic hottie Yoh and naive, eternally peppy ex-jock Haruna. With about nothing in common but their mutual devotion, Yoh and Haruna manage to come through their (mostly internal) dramas--and much of the growth, especially in this volume, is Yoh's. Haruna's personality provides him with some pretty unique challenges, and if Yoh's love was ever in doubt at any point, all doubt is silenced in the first part of the volume when he takes an alarmingly out of character (and hilarious) step to pull Haruna out of a bad emotional place. Another highlight of Yoh's includes his reaction to a challenge of sorts from a would-be rival in studliness.

High School Debut is a pretty good example of how very enjoyable well done shojo comics can be.

Join me next time, when I wax poetic about Skip Beat!

Yea! This volume was so much better than #7. I appreciate Haruna's energy and excitement and Yoh always finds a way to be perfectly sweet in the end. Going to have to put this series on my purchase list for school. The students who read shojo manga will love it!

Haruna has three new admirers from the new freshman class. One of them even kisses Haruna in front of Yoh. To get Haruna to calm down, Yoh kisses Shinji. For Haruna's birthday, Yoh takes her to a baseball game and she catches a home run. He also gets her 17 red roses for her 17th birthday.

This series follows the main character, Haruna Nagashima, and her quest to find a boyfriend in high school. In junior high, Haruna was the star pitcher of her school's softball team and spent her time outside of practice reading romantic comics. Now that she's in high school, she devotes her time to finding herself a boyfriend ("her high school debut" as she calls it). However, she is completely clueless when it comes to fashion, dating, and boys, so she asks upperclassmen Yoh Komiyama to become her "coach" in these areas. He agrees on one condition: she must not by any circumstances fall for him.

The books consist of Haruna's comical adventures at high school and outside of school with Yoh, his sister, and they're group of friends, along with various other characters who appear throughout the series.

Age: Young Adult Reader (Ages 15-18)
Rating 4 out of 5 stars for:

Art:
The artist has a very defined, unique style that sets her drawing apart from others (you can easily pick out her drawings out of a selection of artists). Not my favorite type of art, as sometimes proportions and anatomy are lacking. However, the artist has an incredibly talent for drawing clothing/accessories and this makes up for it!

Writing:
The story's pacing is straight-forward and plot development is consistent throughout series. Each chapter consists of a smaller stories that seam together to create Haruna's high school experience. The characters Kawahara writes are interesting - they are distinct from one another and personalities interact with one another in a realistic way. Haruna is portrayed as a juxtaposition - loud, hyper, pure, gullible and easily fooled at times, yet also resilient, wise, thoughtful, caring and steadfast loyal. (Most of the characters have these ups and downs to their personalities making them more dimensional). Great, laugh out loud comedy throughout the book, too!

Recommended to mostly older teens who enjoy reading teen romantic-comedy manga.

reread: stolen kiss and birthday volume. I know it's highly improbable to have a birthday where you go to watch a game and it's the coach's birthday and they play the birthday song and then you catch a home run ball and then the guy who hit it says that it's dedicated to his daughter who was born that day and he hopes she grows up to be amazing like the girl who caught his ball but I don't fucking care because I am so happy for Haruna having a nice birthday. I cried at the end. I don't know why I like these so much. I wish I can find love like Haruna did but I am not sure if I can be as honest and relentless and vulnerable as Haruna is but I guess I can be Yoh and get someone 17 red roses even though it would embarrass me so much.

Rivals arrive, certain things happen, and of course HARUNA overreacts like always. My word girl. I know you feel shitty about the fact you got x by another boy, but really, your boyfriend clearly says it is OK. He understands, he gets it. No need to go to the library and get a book on nuns or even just run away each time you see your boyfriend. Are you 2 years old? Or are you almost 17? It was an accident, really, get it already. Stop being so dumb. Poor Yoh had to do that to finally get through Haruna.
I was a bit confused about what she said in this part. She says she only had 3 kisses, but we all know she had 4 already... (and also just 4? What the hell?)
The next part is much better, though I don't get why Yoh is so stressed about it. Embarrassed I can imagine, but stressed? I am sure you could have thought of something to do for her birthday. But eh, it was cute in the end, and I was quite happy.

Something about this volume in particular really grabbed me by the throat and made me wish I wasn’t single, lol. Painfully sweet and cute. Mostly due to Yoh working so hard to get over his internal blocks and do things he knows Haruna will like. It’s just!!! My poor heart!!!!!

Anyway, the birthday date was so precious and adorable. Haruna’s obliviousness to underclassmen liking her is on par for her and hilarious. Yoh’s protective nature is always a treat. I love this series.

Okay… the first half of this volume, Haruna was being extra af!!!!! But it was too hilarious!!! Especially when Yoh “sacrificed “ himself to make Haruna feel better. If your man won’t kiss a dude for you, then is he really your man??? LOL

The second half of this volume was about Haruna’s birthday. The baseball game and what came after was my favorite things about this volume. I love this couple. I want the best for them!!!

More of a 3.5 star rating;
Okay so we learned about 2 of Haruna’s admirers, now I’m curious about the quiet one. Also, seeing everyone celebrate Haruna’s birthday was really cute. It was adorable seeing Yoh go out of his comfort zone for her.

Haha, oh my god, this volume was so unnecessarily dramatic. Everything was blown out of proportion and it had me rolling my eyes. Either way, I still enjoyed reading it. The whole accidental kiss thing was down-right ridiculous. Some random dude kisses Haruna and then she goes off on some mental breakdown and contemplates jumping off a roof. She's so dramatic. Yoh kept telling her it was ok, but she kept going psycho. The dude that tried to kiss her was a jerk though. However, I did laugh when he thought he had impregnated Haruna from the kiss. Also, another moment I liked was when Yoh kissed the dude to even the score out and make Haruna feel less awkward about it. I seriously laughed my face off in that moment. It's true love when your boyfriend will kiss another boy for you haha.

I still am liking Yoh and Haruna together, though I can't believe they've been dating this whole time and only kissed 4 times. Not that all couples have to eat each others face and constantly make-out, but I thought it was a bit weird for two teenagers. Haruna as usual is over-the-top and dramatic. It seems in their relationship Yoh is the one that keeps Haruna grounded. She's always freaking out and he's always there to calm her down even though her antics are ridiculous.

Still not sure what's up with two of the three new guys. I know now that the one is fangirling over Yoh, but what in the world is up with the other two. The one guy is creepy and just silently stares at people. The other guy, I'll admit, is pretty cute (the one that helped her carry the boxes in the last volume). One of the things that bothered me about him though was the way he was drawn. It's in the eyes. It looks like he is undead or on heavy drugs. Freaks me out a bit and I've noticed that Yoh has the same creepy zombie eyes..

Also, maybe it's just the version I'm reading, but I'm a bit tired of Asa always referring to herself in the third-person. Oh my god, it was sooo annoying! It was always like, 'Asa wants to go to the kaoreoke' and 'what type of food would Asa be'.
