Long time friend of Violet Carlyle, that rogue Smith, and Jack Wakefield, Denny Lancaster is a devoted husband, a father to two, and an avid lover of crime. He’s also a little addicted to chocolate. So he notices when things change at his favorite chocolate shop. Convinced something is amiss, Denny delves right in. This time on his own. And discovers that maybe the time has come for him to be the hero.
This spin off is, quite simply, a waste of reading time that I’m sure you could put to better use.
In the Violet Carlyle books, Denny is an affable, (somewhat) Bright Young Thing who is largely at the periphery of the adventures.
If he is remembered at all, he’s best known for his love of long daytime naps, chocolate of any sort, and generally hanging about while others take the reins.
In this book, which clearly did not have a proofreader, Denny takes it upon himself to delve into the absence of the chocolate maker who supplies his legal fixes.
I laid the small amount of humor, especially of the jail scenes, but I honestly don’t understand why this book was published: it is only over 100 pages, the story is extremely weak - at time it totally lacks verisimilitude, and the denouement seems like it was simply pulled out of a hat wherein the author had thrown endings that wouldn’t work in other books.
These characters are from the Violet Carlyle books. Each person and couple has their quirks, but Denny and Lila have been a couple since they were very young. They love each other deeply and laugh at each other. Their marriage is strong and they often have the same thoughts. In this book Denny seems to get into several scraps through no fault of his own actions. He keeps trying to help yet a constable has his suspicions of whether he is guilty of doing bad things and keeps arresting him. Denny has a really good heart and his friends and family know this. I liked this book and look forward to reading more.
What a fun idea to give Denny his own story! It was ingeniously plotted. Only Beth Byers could figure out how to make Denny the protagonist of a story. I recommend this book as I do all of her books. You will thoroughly enjoy this one.
This was so boring and annoying that I didn't finish reading it. I have read all the Violet Carlye books and enjoyed them to different degrees but overall I enjoy reading the series. This book was terrible. Denny had no charm at all he was just idiotic. ALSO, why wasn't this book proofread. It was full of errors.
The quietest ( or should we say the most sedate?) member of the “family” finally gets his own story and the chance to be the hero! Dear affable Denny sets out to answer a burning question and ends up with more trouble than he bargained for. Perseverance and the best friends ever do, however, get him through in the end. Well done!
For a man who is supposed to be as useless as Denny sees himself, he accomplished quite a lot with the help of his wife, Lila. The characters are beloved, the plot is easily followed, and the premise is find what happened to the "chocolate lady", Tana. I highly recommend anything that Beth Byers has a hand in.
Good story, but author needs better proof readers. The mistakes and my mind forced to correct for missing words or words changed by autocorrect gave me a headache. This isn't the first time I have had issues with all the proofing mistakes...sorry, but they ruined a good read for me.
It's so easy to love Denny. He's the most laid back person besides his wife. He stumbles into trouble due to his love of chocolate and becomes a hero. I would love to be part of this friend group and solve mysteries. I love all of Beth Byers books <3
The story was adorable as Denny’s character.Fun with a side of mischief and giggles with Denny to the rescue with bad luck and his chosen family of friends to help out when the tide turns critical.Needs a little editing.❣️💃🏻😉
Cute little story, but the editing was horrible. PG 62 " the "had of the watch" instead of head,PG 88 " here just closed his eyes" instead of he, etc. There were more mistakes, but those two were most glaring.
Chocolate soothes the savage beast. And her Daddy, too. A nice book, but this isn't really the Denny we have come to know and love. I will keep reading knowing that there will be progress.
Denny is the hero of the day with Lila his wife as his sidekick. His love for chocolate is the reason he knew something was wrong when his favourite shop was closed!
