Very interesting with nice pictures. The conclusion was a bit of a mess but all is forgiven because of a two page spread discussing Norse and Celtic influences on Tolkien (...who spoke seven languages, good grief...). An enjoyable read.
It's got Celts. It's got Vikings. What more do you need?
This book does a great job at covering the long history of the Celts in Europe without being overwhelming, then does the same for the shorter history of the Vikings. In the third section of the book the author brings the two cultures together in the Battle of Clontarf. The handling of the topic, making the two cultures' world come to life, and squeezing it into less than a couple hundred pages is impressive.
Nicely done and enjoyable even for someone such as myself who doesn't tend to read or study history. It helped that the little bit of history I have read was about the Vikings and Celts in Northern Europe. So I felt it was easy to stay connected to the subject.
A fine, brief overview of the history of the Celts and Vikings, with some truly lovely photographs. Not by any means comprehensive, but a nice way to whet the appetite for delving back into more in-depth history of the Celtic and Scandinavian peoples. Quite a quick, enjoyable read.
If you are doing research on Celtic or Norse life, this is a good book to read. Or if you just want to know more about who these people were, pick up this book!
